She explains what conditions may warrant a surgical procedure (either planned or emergent) for a patient with Irritable Bowel Disease, and what studies may be conducted prior to surgery. Dr. Hammond concludes this podcast by outlining what preventative measures a patient with Ulcerative Colitis should take due to the increased risk of cancer associated with the disease.

This disease tends to “masquerade” as other digestive diseases, when it is actually the nerves surrounding the intestines interpreting normal activity within the gut as intense pain. Dr. Delegge explains that while treatment of this condition is difficult, the use of small doses of some older anti-depressants to blunt the effects of Visceral Hypersensitivity has shown some promise as a potential treatment. He concludes by explaining the importance of continuing to investigate potential treatments for this condition and improving patients’ quality of life.

He concludes by emphasizing how the Digestive Disease Center is committed to evaluating new technologies and procedures to maximize the level of patient care at MUSC.
