2010 SS Camaro David C. Atkin’s Review

When testing the new SS Camaro, of course you have to test it against the Mustang, and the Dodge Challenger, and be able to beat them both at their own game, if you dig in to the facts, you’ll certainly find that the new 2010 SS Camaro has done just that.

Tests may very in times that the cars run between the different people who test them, my numbers will be coming from Edmund’s web site, Edmund’s tested the hottest SS Camaro that is available to the public, and it proved just hot hot it is.

My usual forte is the old muscle cars, but I just could not refuse to do an article about the new 2010 SS Camaro, since of the big three, the Camaro has always been my favorite car, the basic setup on the Edmund’s test car is as follows.

The Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual as the gearbox of choice, you get an LS3 6.2-liter V8 in the deal, which is rated at 426 HP @ 5900 RPM, and 420 FTLB of torque @ 4600 RPM, the stats certainly stack up to the Camaro of yesteryear.

This package would have a 3.45:1 rear ration installed in the car, this is a great combination for a 0-60 blast off of 4.7 seconds, not to bad if I do say so myself, it’s a 6.2 liter engine, which is rated at 22 MPG on the freeway, not bad for a hot rod.

When Edmund’s tested this car it ran a 13 second ¼ mile @ 110.9 MPH in factory street dressing, this is pretty good when compared to the Challenger R/T’s of 5.5 second 0-60 time, and it’s 13,9 second ¼ mile @ 103.2 MPH, right in front of it comes the Ford Mustang GT.

The Ford Mustang GT did a much better job then the Challenger R/T did, with a 0-60 time of 5.2 seconds, and a standing ¼ mile time of 13.5 seconds @ 102.9 MPH, but in the it’s not enough to take out the SS Camaro, Chevrolet has done a great job building this car.

Once again my pick for top new muscle car is the 2010 Camaro SS, if your looking for a car that does all of the things that a muscle car is supposed to do, right out of the box, this is without a doubt the muscle car you should look at.

If you have a standard 1969 camaro you should not have a lot of problem finding the parts and supplies that you need to restore the car, but if you have a special 1969 camaro you’ll probably run in to a few problems locating some of the parts.

Allow me to differentiate between a special 1969 camaro, and a standard 1969 camaro, a standard 1969 camaro would be a Z/28, SS, RS, RS/SS, RS-Z/28, a special camaro would be a Yenko Camaro, a Baldwin Motion Camaro, or a ZL1 Camaro.

These are camaros that a very limited number of them was built, making it hard to find some of the parts, so if your restoring one of these you’ll need to add a lot of patience to the restoration plan of your car because if will take a while to locate some of the parts.

For this article we’ll assume that you have already bought your car, and now it’s time to start the restoration process on the car, first of all get the car in to the garage, and plan on it being there for a while, this is not an over night process.

Planning a restoration on your 1969 camaro is no different from planning one on any other car, the first thing you need to do is take an inventory of the car so you can list the tings that need to be done to restore the car.

I have a method for doing an inventory of a car for restoration purposes, first get out your notebook, and divide one of the pages in to three columns, name one of them replace parts, name one repair parts, and name one repair work.

What your going to do with this notebook is a walk around inventory of the car, you’ll bee looking for parts that need to be replaced, parts that you can repair and reuse, and getting a general feel for the repair work that needs to be done on the car it’s self.

The reason we do this is to get an idea of some of the things that we need to do to restore the car, I realize that you can’t get a complete list of the things that you need until you tear in to the car, but this will give you a good idea of where to start.

You can take your list of replace parts and start to run down suppliers for them, and the cost of them, make sure that you inspect inspect the entire car when you do the walk around, I usually work from the front to the rear of the car when I do this.

Then after I get everything that I can see, I lift the car off of the ground and inspect all of the systems under the car, like suspension, brakes, steering, rear end, and sheet metal, once I have the inventory completed I can get on to the tear down.

This inventory can help you in a lot of ways, the first and most obvious is the fact that it will help you get a feel for the pricing of the parts that you’ll need, if your good at estimating how long it will take you to repair and replace things, it will give you a good idea of how many hours it will take.

Take your time on this part of the process, the more through this is the better it will be, you’ll get a really good idea of the parts you need, and the cost of them, you’ll get a good idea of the time it will take to do the restoration of the car.

If you know these things up front, you won’t get a lot of surprises as you do the work and you’ll enjoy every hour that you spend working on your car, keep this in mind as you do your inventory, in most cases if the car is in good condition, it takes professional shop about 600-800 hours to restore a car.

That of course changes when you add more work, but it will give you an idea of the time that these cars can take to restore, it takes a long time to complete one of these projects, the the reward is well worth the time that you’ll spend restoring the car.

Imports Have Better Quality – You May Change Your Mind

I constantly hear that the imports are built to a high quality standard then domestic cars are, and to this I say, you may change your mind after you red a report that I have on Toyota trucks, the problems that the frames had, and the way that your favorite car company dealt with it.

Toyota has been in this country for a long time, and it’s one of those companies you hear builds car to a higher quality standard them the US car builders do, it does not make you smart when you say things like this, it makes you anti American.

Later on in this article I’m going to give you a link to a report from a company who investigated Toyota after the frames on their trucks begun to fail, and I’m not talking just a quick fix either, some of these people had to get rid of their trucks all together.

This just helps me prove my point to buy American, don’t buy the Toyota, the BMW, the Mercedes, buy American, I’ve herd all the excuses, they don’t build a car that I want to drive, they have higher quality, I look more successful in an import.

None of these excuses work on me, I’ve been telling people for years now that the American made cars are better, you’ll never read a story about a Chevrolet that’s frame rusted in half, but later on you will read a report that will prove that Toyota frames did.

You’ll still argue with me, but you will not locate even one instance of this happening to an American truck, oh you may hear of problems with tires, or a battery cable misplaced, but you can look till hell freezes over and you won’t find a single instance of a frame falling apart.

The reason you won’t is because it has never happened, and it never will, but it did your you wonderful Toyota, and it will again, American has always built higher quality car and trucks, and we always will, after this I should never have to argue about a Toyota truck again, but I will.

You can spew off all of the platitudes that you’d like, you can say how much better of a car they build, but I will prove that they don’t, I will prove that you didn’t study before you bought your Toyota, I will show you that you should buy American.

Toyota love them, or hate them, they have done a wonderful job of market their products in this country, and an even better job of hiding the bad things that happen to their cars and trucks, in this report you’ll see that Toyota truck frames broke in half.

It was never seen in the news, it was buried, hidden from the general public, but every little tiny thing that the domestic car makers do is all over the news, they can’t so much as sneeze without the media blowing it out of proportion, these are our car companies, not Japan’s.

American has always built better products, all this carp you hear about the importers building high quality goods is ridiculous, but most American’s have bought in to it, do a lit research before you go out and buy imported goods, it’s time to think American.

First of all you need to learn about the car, learn every nut and bolt, know it from the ground up, once you have learned all about the the car you can get in to the hunting process, this is the fun parts of the process, this is where you put your knowledge to work.

I’m sure that if your interested in classic cars you’ve heard the term by the number, or numbers matching, you need to know how to read these numbers because they’ll make you, or break you when it comes to investing in cars.

There nothing more important then the numbers, these numbers that you hear about all the time will tell you everything about the car your looking at, these numbers are your best friend if your going to invest in classic cars, the numbers are what I’m going to talk about here.

The first and arguably most important number is the vehicle identification number, or (VIN code) this number can tell you a lot, but it can’t tell you everything, vins for different manufactures will tel you different things about their cars.

Take for instance a vin plate on your 1960’s camaro reads something like this 124379N109876, this code would break down like this.
The 1 denotes the manufacture of the car, 1 being Chevrolet.
The 24 denotes the Series of the car, or engine type, 24 being 8 cylinder.
The 37 denotes the body style of the car, 37 being two door coupe.
The 9 denotes the year of the car, 9 being 1969.
The N denotes which facility the car was manufactured at, the N means Norwood Ohio.
The 109876 denotes the this was the 109876TH car produced on this day at Chevrolet.

What you need to know:

1.The third digit would tell you if the cat had a V8, if that digit a 3,6, or a 4 it had a V8.
2.The fourth digit indicates the body style, 3 for coupe, 6 for convertible.
3.The sixth digit indicates the year of the car, 7=1967, 8=1968, 9=1969.
4.The seventh digit indicates the production plant, N=Norwood, L=Van Nuys.
5.The last six digits indicate the line number, this number would rise by one with every car built at these two plants.

The vin code needs to match will all the other numbers on the car, like the rpo code, the transmission tag, and the rear end tag, if your looking for factory original to make an investment in classic cars, it a must that the numbers match perfectly.

The rpo code will tell you things like what engine, let’s say you’re looking for a 1969 Z/28 camaro, the suffix, or end of the rpo code would have a “DZ” indicating that the car has a 302 with 290 HP, which is the only engine that the Z/28 came with in 1969.

The rpo code would also tell you if the car had an automatic, or standard transmission in it from the factory, it will tell you the application which would be a 1969 Z/28 Camaro, and in most cases it would tell you if the engine has four bolt mains or not.

You’d also need to know the color code break down for 1969 is your looking for a 1969 Z/28, below I will add the factory color codes for the year 1969.

Code 10 is Tuxedo Black
Code 40 is Butternut Yellow
Code 50 is Dover White
Code 51 is Dusk Blue
Code 52 is Garnet Red
Code 53 is Glacier Blue
Code 55 is Azure Turquoise
Code 57 is Fathom Green
Code 59 is Frost Green
Code 61 is Burnished Blue
Code 63 is Champagne
Code 65 is Olympic Gold
Code 67 is Burgundy
Code 69 is Cortez Silver
Code 71 is LeMans Blue
Code 72 is Hugger Orange
Code 76 is Daytona Yellow
Code 79 is Rallye Green

Keep in mind that the more you know about these cars, the less chance that you’ll lose money, they gain value with every year that they are on the earth and this will never stop, on Chevrolet you also have a protecto-plate that needs to be decoded.

For this article I won’t go in to the protecto-plate, but don’t fail to learn about it also, and on the engine you’ll need to decode the casting number to make sure that the engine in your car is the one that belongs there, it needs to match the rpo code.

I’ve been out doing some reading about the economy, and different ways that you can help your self through the bad economy in the long run, as usual it starts with cash and investments, the investments I’m talking about aren’t gold or silver though.

I’m talking about old cars, has gold or silver gone up 10-15 times since the 1960’s, the answer is no, have classic cars went up in value 10-15 times, and in some cases a lot more, the answer to that question is a big yes.

Of course I’m talking about restored to factory original specs cars, not hot rods, street rods, or any other form of custom, you do those kind of cars to fulfill a dream, if your buying them for an investment they need to be original as possible.

It’s imperative that you do your studying about the cars that you purchase, you need to know them inside and out, or you could get a big surprise, and not the good kind of surprise, I’ve seen Hemi mopars go for $2,000,000 or more.

These cars would have went for between $1,800 – $3,000 back in the 19609’s and 1970’s so you do the math, a 1970 GSX Buick stage II 455 would have went for about $2,800 on the market back in 1970, the last one of these I seen sold for $650,000, and not at an auction.

The list goes on and on, it’s littered with Chevrolet’s, Ford’s, Chrysler’s, they all built special cars that people just loved, and that love translates in to dollars, it translates in to security for the people who own them, and it translates in to fun.

How many investments do you know of that have risen this sharply over the years, you may be able to name one or two, but the one thing that classic cars do that no other investment will ever do is this, they don’t lose value, the economy has not driven them down in price.

What I’m saying here is, buy, restore, and have fun with these cars, they are a part of our countries automotive history, and there are still a lot of them to be found, yes they are getting harder to come by, but with a little American ingenuity you’ll locate the right one for you.

Once you’ve caught the classic car bug, you won’t be able to stop, and the more you get, the more you’re estate will grow, and you net worth will rise with every one you buy, well except for the one that you mistake on, and it will happen.

Those are the ones that you can have fun with and customize, the ones that are good daily drivers, because you’ve got to know one thing, the less you drive your collector cars, the more their worth in the end, of course you should have fun with them though.

Take them to the shows and have fun with them, just try to stay away from driving them every day, get your kids interested in them, and make it a family affair, and then you’ll have to hear about the time you spend with your cars, have fun and enjoy, I hope this helps.

How To Inspect A Corvette For Rust Before You Buy It

This isn’t going to be a huge article that drags on for hours and hours, I will cover the areas that you need to look for rust in 1963-82 corvettes, it will be a basic article designed to help you save money on the purchase of your corvette.

A corvette can be a very illusive thing, you think rust, how is that possible it made out of fiber glass, for this article we won’t be talking about the body of the car we’ll be talking about the frame, and a few other areas of America’s sports car.

I know you love corvettes, and I do to they are without a doubt a very special car, and considered to be America’s only sports car, but when your buying one what you don’t know can hurt you, and it probably will, so it’s time for me to lend a helping hand.

Obviously the entire car is not fiber glass, the car sits on a frame made of steel, and steel will rust it that can’t be changed, but it can be fixed, so let’s dive in to this article head first, if your thinking of buying a corvette this will help you for sure.

First of all let’s start with the windshield of the car, it is fiber glass wrapped around steel, and obviously steel will rust, so lets begin by looking around the frame of the windshield, if it’s rusted badly it may show as fiber glass separating from the post at the bottom of the windshield.

Just because you can’t see the rust in this area doesn’t mean that it’s not there, you may need to discover this rust after you have bought the car and have begun to restore it, if these areas are rusted you’ll need to rebuild them, they are a part of the structure of the car.

Corvettes also have heavy steel reinforced doors, to look at the doors of your corvette you’d never know that they have any steel in them at all, the doors in you corvette are actually wrapped around a steel frame, this means that you need to inspect the edges of the doors.

You’ll be looking for bubbles in the fiber glass, or areas that appear to be raised, also look for cracks in the fiber glass that rust is creeping through, fiber glass has the inherent problem of stress cracking under pressure, and water can seep in through these cracks, and it will.

Look at the door latch, this can be a very telling area of a corvette because they aren’t hidden, all you have to do is open the door and look at it, also look the hinges, and the hinge mounts for the doors these are also tell tale areas of a corvette.

Sometimes rust can hide in a corvette, so don’t get in a hurry, the best thing you can do is to take your time wile inspecting the car, ask the owner if you can take it to you mechanic and have the once over done, use this time to inspect the car.

Now we’ll look at the frame it’s self, a floor hoist would be nice here, if you need to go to a shop and rent one for a couple of hours, one of the most common places for the frame of a corvette to rust is just in front of the rear wheel on each side of the car.

Pay very close attention here, make sure that you take notes so you don’t forget what you have found, usually you’ll find the rust that I speak of on the out side of the frame just in front of the rear wheels, in bad cases it will creep down to the bottom of the frame.

As in most cars the corvette will rust in the radiator support area, so pay close attention to this area of the car your looking at inspect this area very carefully, rust can go unseen in here for years, and you don’t want that in your corvette.

Look for puffy, or flaking steel in the rear suspension trailing arms on your corvette, this is a very common area for the corvette to hide rust, and as you can imagine you don’t want your rear suspension to give out on you, so pay very close attention here.

I hope this helps you with the purchase of your classic corvette, now you know that they do rust and you’ll more then likely be fixing some rotted areas of your car, don’t let this discourage you, let it be a reason to learn about your corvette.

Used Corvettes For Sale: How To Find The Right Corvette

Used corvette for sale, when your looking to buy a used corvette you’ve got to think about a few things, and it’s just a bit different from any other used car, rather your looking for a project car, or a driver.

I will attempt to give you some information to help you in the endeavor buy a used corvette, hopefully I can save you a little agony when it comes to the purchase of your used corvette.

I am a huge proponent of corvettes, I love them from top to bottom, and inside out, the corvette is America’s sports car, but it’s also a muscle car, and no other car on the planet is both, the corvette is special.

So let’s get in to the hunt for your used corvette, the tips that I will give will help you locate just the car you want, a corvette that you can be proud of, a corvette that you can love.

Let’s get in to the meat and potatoes of this article, I will cover very briefly a few tips to help you find the perfect corvette, just the one you want, I will start with the body, and work through the rest of it.

First of all you’ll need to do a walk around, and get a general idea of the car your looking at, below I will give a bullet list of things to inspect on the car, these things will help save you time and money.

Body Inspection List:

After you walk around is finished you’ll need to take a good look at these things.

1.Look closely at the alignment of the body panels, looking for gaps the look to wide, or to narrow, misaligned panels usually indicate that the car has been wrecked.
2.Look for cracks in the fiber glass, hair line cracks called stress cracks mean body repair.
3.Open the doors and watch for them to drop and you do it, this indicates that the hinges need to be replaced.
4.If the corvette has a removable hardtop, take it off of the car and see if it’s digging in to the body of the car, this means body work, and new seals for the top.
5.Look for stress cracking around the door handles, and locks, it commonly happens there.
6.If the corvette your looking at has pop-up head lights, make sure that they pop-up, also look at the openings for stress cracking.

The list above will give you a good place to start, remember I said that it would be a short list, it doesn’t cover everything, just a few of the major things that you should look at.

Now I’ll give a few ideas on the mechanical part of the car, this will of course require a test drive of the car, if the car doesn’t run, you of course can’t do some of these ideas on this list.

1.Open the hood of the car, look for leaks around the valve covers, intake manifold, water pump, and carburetor, leaks here indicates that you need to replace gaskets.
2.While your under the hood look at the wiring to see if it’s burned, or has had an ugly repair job, this will tell you that you need to replace the engine compartment wiring harness, a good reason to save money.
3.Look at the brake lines, the ones you can see, a brake fluid leak will remove the paint where it leaks, it should be easy to see, this indicates that you need to replace brake lines, another reason to save money.
4.Take the car for a test drive, and listen for the transmission to make grinding noises, and watch for it to pop out of gear, popping out of gear indicates scynchros are going out, and you’ll need to rebuild the transmission, a whining sound is normal in most old corvette transmissions.
5.Step on the brakes and see if the pulsate, grab, or grind, all of the conditions indicate that the brakes need to be rebuilt.
6.As you go over bumps in the road listen for popping and cracking sounds to come for the front of the car, this will also happen during a sharp turn one way, or the other, and it indicates that you need to replace ball joints, another good reason to save money.
