Over the weekend of August 5th to the 7th, 2011, ETC had the privilege
and the honor to host Jeff Thomson and Jeremy Desmon
during the Musical Theatre Workshops Festival 2011 in Dayton, Ohio.
Their musical, PUMP UP THE VOLUME (additional lyrics by Jordan Mann)
was workshopped by ETC at the Loft Theater, home of
THE HUMAN RACE THEATRE COMPANY.
This interview was conducted at the ETC offices on Saturday morning...
less than 12 hours after Jeff and Jeremy saw the show for the first time.
As you'll hear, a good time was had by all!

on and around the Great White Way... and Las Angeles.
We talk about his viewing experiences with BOOK OF MORMON,

yes... SPIDERMAN.

I also spoke to Stephen about one of his online passions...

For our fifth season send off we're joined by the very talented creative team of MILLER and TYSEN...
CHRIS MILLER (music) and NATHAN TYSEN (lyrics) have written The Burnt Part Boys
(Book by Mariana Elder, finalist for the American Theatre Critics New Play Award, co-produced by the Vineyard Theatre and Playwrights Horizons Spring 2010), and The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (Book by Joe Calarco, world premiere at Barrington Stage Co., Boston Globe Top Ten Pick of 2008). Their song cycle, Fugitive Songs received a 2008 Drama Desk Award Nomination for Outstanding Revue. Chris and Nathan apply for many awards and grants, and sometimes even win (Jonathan Larson, Richard Rodgers, Daryl Roth, and Kitty Carlisle Hart). Television work includes songs for Sesame Street and The Electric Company. Miller and Tysen began their collaboration together at New York University where they received their MFA’s in musical theatre writing. Current projects include an adaptation of the popular novel Tuck Everlasting (Book by Claudia Shear, direction by Casey Nicholaw), and two new commissions from Lincoln Center Theater and Playwrights Horizons/Theatreworks Silicon Valley.

GreJim sat down with GREGG COFFIN and MELISSA RAIN ANDERSON
in the lobby of the Loft Theatre (home of the Human Race Theatre Co.) in Dayton, Ohio.
Gregg's new musical, right next to me , opens there next week on May 26th, 2011.
Melissa is directing the show, as well as having been involved from the beginning
in the development of the show.

Gregg's previous musicals have been featured on MusicalWorld in the past.

The weekend of April 29th and 30th was a big one for ETC.
A BIG FAT one!
ETC unrolled our second BFC series of new musical theater works in front of 2 audiences...
The concert featured works from Thomson & Mann, Carner & Gregor, Kerrigan & Lowdermilk,
Elaine Pechacek, Katie Hamilton, Amy & Steven Leigh, David Brush, Jim Farley, Neville Grusd,
Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, Joe Fabel, Adam Gwon, Deborah Abramson & Alisa Hauser, Noel Katz,
Duncan Sheik & Kyle Jarrow, Mark Weiser, Ryan Scott Oliver and William Finn.

We were joined over the weekend by Neville Grusd & Derek Gregor...
Having two of new musical theatre's creators in our facility was too much to pass up on
taking advantage of the situation with a live episode of MusicalWorld, so...
on Saturday afternoon we gathered at the ETC office with part of the concert cast,
(Corinne Derusha, Nicole Dine, Tara Nicole Murphy, Zach Steele, TC Schreier, director Amy Leigh,
music director Steven Leigh and David Brush)

with multi-platinum artist Maurice White of “Earth, Wind & Fire” fame.
His new musical, “ Take Me America ” ( book and lyrics by Bill Nabel )
was presented at the Midtown Manhattan Theater Festival,
and took several major prizes, including “Best New Musical”.
“Take Me America” is based on the award winning PBS Documentary
“Well Founded Fear”. It was presented at the “Village Theater” in Washington last summer, and they have been called back for a workshop and performance in 2010.
It was also a finalist for the Richard Rogers Award .
Mr. Christianson received his bachelor’s degree from SUNY at Potsdam
(Crane School Of Music), and has done graduate work in composition at the
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
After college, he started his career in New York as musical director/conductor for such
Broadway Shows as “Godspell”, “Gilda Radner-Live From New York”,
and “The Magic Show”.
His film credits include “Vibrations” (with Christina Applegate), “Machiavelli Rises”,
“Mindbender” (Ken Russell-director) and “Kounterfeit” (with Hilary Swank).

Alisa Hauser is an alum of the BMI/Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop where she
met many of her fantastic collaborators including the amazing Bob Christianson .
For the theatre she has written the short musical The Weather Man
with composer Philip Palmer, which had its world premiere at the
New Works Festival at Clear Space Productions in Delaware.
She also wrote an original song (music and lyrics) for the
Weston Playhouse production of Stuart Little.
For television she has written lyrics, with composer Stephen Sislen,
for the Disney Channel's Johnny And The Sprites .
Her cabaret songs have been performed at various venues around New York City
including Ars Nova, Joe’s Pub and the Shag Carpet Festival.
Alisa is a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music with a degree
in musical theatre and worked for many years as an actress where she
appeared on Broadway in Thoroughly Modern Millie , Grease ,
and Disney's Beauty and The Beast .

The Bengson's are the best in vaudevillian indie folk and rising stars in the
NYC experimental music and theater community.
They have performed their original shows, performance pieces and original musicals,
AIN'T THAT GOOD NEWS and THE MAGIC SHOW: THE STORY OF THE BAREFOOT ANGELS, across the country and around the world.

They have appeared to acclaim at such venues as Culture Project’s Women Center Stage (NYC),
MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA), terraNOVA Collective’s soloNOVA Arts Festival at The Daryl Roth Theater (NYC), La MaMa E.T.C. (NYC), Dixon Place (NYC), BRIClab (Brooklyn, NY), The Flynn (Burlington, VT), Town Hall Theater (Middlebury, VT), The Thacher School (Ojai, CA),
the Tijuana Christian Orphanage (Tijuana, Mexico) and the Market Theater (Johannesburg, South Africa).

The Bengson's are also activists and teachers, who have taught students in NYC's public schools and Cambodian immigrants in Massachusetts, as well as internationally, including at the Market Theater Lab of Johannesburg, ZA, the Tijuana Christian Orphanage of Tijuana, Mexico,
and ASAPROSA, in Santa Ana, El Salvador.

2010 JONATHON LARSON AWARD WINNERS!

Michael Kooman (music) and Christopher Dimond (book & lyrics) met while students at
Carnegie Mellon University. Their most recent musical, GOLDEN GATE,
premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival.
Their musical DANI GIRL has been workshopped at the Kennedy Center's
New Visions/New Voices Festival, American Conservatory Theatre,
the ASCAP/Disney Musical Theater Workshop, CAP-21, and was awarded the
KC/ACTF Musical Theatre Award.
JUNIOR CLAUS, a family-friendly holiday musical, debuted in Minneapolis this winter,
and is slated for a midwest tour next year.
The duo’s song cycle HOMEMADE FUSION has been produced at CMU,
the Pittsburgh CLO’s Late Night Cabaret, the Zipper Theater, Monday Night New Voices: Chicago,
and has been featured in several NAMT showcases.

In addition to being awarded the 2010 Larson Award,
Michael and Chris are 2009-2010 Dramatists Guild Fellows,
were recently Fellows at the O’Neill Music Theater Conference,
and were finalists for the 2009 Fred Ebb Award.

We talked to Tim about many of his projects including his 10 minute musicals...

Timothy Huang is a composer, lyricist and librettist residing in New York City.
He holds a BFA in Drama from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts (CAP21 Conservatory) and an
MFA from NYU/TSOA's Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program.

His full-length musical and thesis, And the Earth Moved (book, music, lyrics) was a finalist for the
National Music Theatre Network’s New Voices Prize in 2004 and received the audience award in the 2004 New York Musical Theatre Festival,
which hosted its premiere production. His one act musical The View From Here also received its premiere production at the
New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2005 and its cast album was listed by talkinbroadway.com's Rob Lester of as one of the Top Ten Cast Albums of 2006.
In 2007 Timothy's musical, March and the Rain received a developmental workshop as part of Mu Performing Arts'
New Performance Program through a grant from the Jerome Foundation.
And his work has also been featured as part of the York Theater Company's NEO (New, Emerging, Outstanding) Spotlight concert series.

In early December, 2009, MW had the opportunity to interview the
2008 JONATHON LARSON PERFORMING ARTS FOUNDATION GRANT winners,
JEFF THOMSON (Music) and JORDAN MANN (Lyrics)
As a songwriting team, Jeff and Jordan received a 2008 Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Grant,
and they were 2006-2007 Dramatis Guild Musical Theatre Writing Fellows.
Their songs have been featured in the acclaimed York Theatre Company’s N.E.O Concert Series,
and Scott Alan’s Monday Night New Voices programs in Chicago and New York,
as well as two sold out engagements at The Duplex. Their song “When The Words Won’t Come”
was published in the Fall 2007 issue of “The Dramatist”.
Their original musical Trails was recently awarded a workshop at Millikin University.
Upcoming projects include, Virtually Me for TheaterWorks USA,
and adaptations of the films Pump Up The Volume and Jawbreaker.
Coming Soon, Jeff and Jordan will be the featured songwriters in the acclaimed “Songbook” series at Lincoln Center.

On July 13th I was privilidged to conduct a second interview with musical creator
NOEL KATZ!
Noel's musical, SUCH GOOD FRIENDS is being produced as part of the NYMF this fall!
I asked plenty of questions from you, our listeners, as well as questions from David Brush
who was again absent from the studio.

We cover all kinds of questions pertaining to the NYMF procedure as well as Noel
answering questions involving his habits and techniques in creating a musical.

This is a long show... 1 hour and 20 minutes (approx.)
I decided to release the interview in it's entirety as opposed to editing the daylights out of it
and possibly cutting something that may be important to you!
