Recently, we awarded a gift certificate to Christy-Lyn for her performance of ‘Tis the Last Rose of Summer. We asked her a bit about her musical background and why she chose the song she did. Hailing from Cape Town in South Africa, Christy-Lyn was very energetic and bubbly when we talked to her, we have a few of her comments we’d like to share with you.

Can you tell us a little bit about your musical background?

I have been involved with music since I was very young, and have always enjoyed singing. I performed my first solo in the preschool nativity play when I was around 3 years old. I started taking piano lessons when I was 7 years old, violin when I was 9, and have sung solos in the Cape Town Eisteddfod every year since I was 8 - although I only started weekly singing lessons when I was 13.

From 2005 to 2008, I was a part of Pro Cantu Youth Choir, an internationally-acclaimed a cappella youth choir led by conductor Leon Starker. This was a great experience, allowing me to travel overseas a number of times to many different countries. Highlights include participating in the World Choir Games in Xiamen, China in 2006 and in Graz, Austria in 2008 (where we were crowned Choir of the World in the Musica Sacra Category). We also traveled to New York in January 2008 to perform at Carnegie Hall; The Armed Man, a mass for peace by Karl Jenkins.

Singing is my passion; one of my greatest joys is to stand up in front of an audience and communicate with people through the words that I’m singing and the emotion that can be portrayed through the music.

Why did you choose this particular song?

I have a wide taste in music, but I particularly enjoy singing classical songs, early baroque pieces and Celtic folksongs. I have always loved singing a cappella – I think there is something special about presenting the voice in its simplicity; vulnerable and pure. Folk songs were passed down from generation to generation, sung in the kitchen or at the fire, accompanied by whichever instrument was available and often simply unaccompanied. I love the haunting melody of this song and the sad story it tells.

Christy-Lyn was also kind enough to share with us her comments about being able to download sheet music from Musicnotes.com. “I have been downloading sheet music from Musicnotes.com for quite a long time now, and I always appreciate being able to find exactly what I’m looking for, and receiving it instantly – when I’m inspired to sing a particular song, I get quite involved and impatient, and it’s great to know that I can rely on Musicnotes for quality music without delay or complication.”

Please take a moment to watch May’s winning video. Musicnotes.com congratulations Christy-Lyn on her performance, and wishes her the best of luck with her music-filled future. Good luck, Christy-Lyn!

Yesterday, we were stunned by the news that Michael Jackson had passed away at the early age of 50. Musicnotes.com would like to extend our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Michael Jackson.

In honor of Michael Jackson’s music and the legacy he left behind both as an individual performer and his early work with the Jackson 5, we would like to share with you some of our music-related memories for this legendary performer, and also comment on how your fellow music lovers have reacted to the news.

Starting at the tender age of 11, Michael Jackson’s first professional performance was with the music group called ‘The Jackson 5,’ performing hit songs like I’ll Be There, ABC as well as the popular Christmas song I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.

Shortly after his success as a member of the family group, Michael launched his solo career. As an individual performer, Michael Jackson had fourteen number one song titles from 1972 through 1995. These songs ranged from Ben to Billie Jean to You Are Not Alone. His discography, available through Rolling Stone Magazine, is a trip down memory lane for many of us here at Musicnotes.com, because several of his albums were a part of our childhoods. Of course, these memories are tied to his elaborate music videos where we watched Michael perform while wearing a glove and a red leather jacket, sing Say, Say, Say with Paul McCartney and dance with a horde of zombies and monsters in Thriller.

From fast-paced songs like Beat It to meaningful songs like Heal the World, perhaps one of the reasons why Michael Jackson’s music is so powerful in our minds is because of his versatility as a songwriter and as a performer.

In addition to his own music, there is another song that a few of us were remembering today. As part of a massive charity effort for USA for Africa, several performers banded together to perform We Are The World. Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and performed by well over a dozen music icons, this song quickly became a worldwide hit. As a powerful song, we still remember the lyrics to We Are The World and the strange and wonderful sight of performers working together for a common, noble goal. Performers included Huey Lewis, Stevie Wonder, Steve Perry, other members of the Jackson 5 and many more.

While we were reminiscing, we decided to put together a collection of sheet music for some of our favorite Michael Jackson songs. What are your favorite songs? Do you play them with a synthesizer sound or on piano?

Of course, we are not the only music lovers or professionals who are mourning the passing of this pop music legend. Music publisher Sony released a press release commenting on Michael Jackson’s passing, expressing their shock and grief.

Martin Bandier, Chairman & CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, said: “Michael was the kind of amazing talent that comes along once in a lifetime. He was an incredible recording artist, an insightful businessman, an unmatched performer, and a true icon. To all of us at Sony/ATV Music Publishing, he was also a trusted and passionate partner, who was very proud of our accomplishments. He will be dearly missed. We wish his children and entire family our deepest condolences.”

Many of you have felt the impact of Michael Jackson’s passing as well, because the world of sheet music is definitely not the same today as it was yesterday. Today, Michael Jackson sheet music is the number one searched for item on our site, and many of you are downloading songs like Black or White and Remember the Time. According to Billboard Magazine, the death of Michael Jackson has also had an immediate impact on music through iTunes, Amazon.com and Twitter. To us, this phenomenon shows the powerful impact the King of Pop’s passing has on music lovers everywhere — us included. Michael may be gone, but his musical legacy will continue to be a part of our hearts and minds for years to come.

Only 25, Peter is currently on tour opening for legendary performer Seal and has released a brand new album earlier this year called East of Angel Town.

Peter has enjoyed international success, and has been garnering fans on both sides of the Atlantic who love piano music. We’ve often received requests for Peter Cincotti sheet music, and we’ve been delighted to work with Peter to get you your songs.

In this interview, we asked Peter to open up and tell us what his favorite song is, who his musical influences have been and more!

Peter Cincotti Q & A with Musicnotes.com

What prompted you to start recording your own songs, as opposed to recording your renditions of traditional jazz standards?

It just happened. I had been writing for a while, but during the tour of my second record writing just took over. It’s a door that, once opened, is tough to close.

Who have been your biggest influences as a songwriter or as a performer?

As a songwriter everyone from Stevie Wonder to Sting to Randy Newman, to many of the all-time greats like Johnny Mandel, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Alan Jay Lerner, Fred Ebb, Richard Rogers. As a performer I like people who really put on a show- everyone from The Rolling Stones, to Tina Turner, to Elton John.

Which do you enjoy more: writing music or performing your songs?

There’s a certain point when I like performing my songs best – somewhere soon after the moment they are written, but not soon-when you know the song well enough, but not too well. There’s a sweet spot in there that’s hard to pinpoint. As far as writing, I hate writing. I just like the feeling of having written.

Do you have any stories to tell about your experiences touring with Seal or in Europe?

There are quite a few stories that go along with 5 guys traveling across the country in a van for 5 weeks. None of which I’d like you to print.

For your new album “East of Angel Town” you collaborated with award-winning lyricist John Bettis. What are some of the highlights from your collaboration experiences?

Every time I write with him is a highlight. Collaborating with John is its own thing. Separate from anything else I do, or will do in the future. I’m lucky to have found a collaborator like him, and I’m very proud of the work we’ve done together.

Do you have a message for your fans that you’d like to share?

Thanks for hanging in there with me through all the record company delays of my last record. Wish I could have moved it along faster. I hope within the next couple years I will get to see a lot more of you.

Of all the songs you’ve recorded and performed, which one is the most memorable to you and why?

“The Country Life” seems to stand out from the rest. That song is sort of an emotional prediction. And many years from now, I hope to re-listen to it to see if I got it right.

What’s next for you in your musical career?

Writing and recording my next record. Have no idea what will come out, but I can’t wait to get in the studio.

Musicnotes.com would like to extend our thanks to Peter Cincotti for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. If you are a fan of Peter, we encourage you to visit the official website of Peter Cincotti or download sheet music for Peter Cincotti. Our sheet music catalog for Peter is up-to-date, and we do have the sheets for his latest album, East of Angel Town.

Thanks for sticking with this edition of our Songwriter Spotlight. We hope you enjoyed this interview and encourage you to support your favorite songwriter or composer today!

We hope you’re enjoying our Musicnotes.com YouPerform Contest, where we offer you the chance to record your performance and win a $100 gift certificate to http://www.musicnotes.com! Our contest entrants this month decided to perform one of our eligible songs from our Musicnotes Editions.

For the first time, one of our contestants decided to submit a creative video, where she did not record herself as a performer. We contacted our contestant, asking her why she chose to submit her entry this way. She said, “I do not show myself singing because I wanted to put the emphasis on the words of this beautiful song - which is really like a prayer for our country. I never knew more than the first stanza of this song and when I sat down to work on the piece I was amazed at the beauty and idealism of the lyrics.” You can read the full description if you click back to YouTube! from the video for “America the Beautiful.”

Our second contestant in this round of voting is a singer who performed ‘Tis the Last Rose of Summer a cappella.

We hope you take the time to watch these videos and vote for May’s Musicnotes.com YouPeform Contest winner! Are you inspired? Don’t forget to submit your entry for June’s contest, too!

This month’s free sheet music download of the month is a song we really think you’re going to love. The song “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” was written by songwriters from Tin Pan Alley back in the early 1900s. Recorded originally as a waltz, the song was covered by most of the popular performers during the late 1910s and early 1920s.

Since the early 20th century, the song has been appeared in dozens of films in several musical styles. For example, “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” appeared in the Woody Allen movie Sweet and Lowdown starring Sean Penn. In this movie, Penn “performs” a solo guitar version of the popular tune, which is actually the recorded performance of jazz guitarist Harold Arlen. Other movies that the song “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” has appeared in include: Eight Men Out (which used a baseball version of the lyrics), The Roaring Twenties, Hooligans, The Eddie Cantor Story, Sweet and Lowdown and several others.

This song also has special significance for those of you who live in London, for “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” is the theme song for West Ham United, a London football team. The story behind how this popular song from the twenties became the anthem for their team is pretty interesting. It’s rumored that one of the players from the early 20s resembled a child from a painting used in a commercial that featured that song. Many fans over the years have sung this song to support their favorite football team. You can find dozens of videos recorded by West Ham United fans on YouTube!

Still popular today, we hope you enjoy your free sheet music download for the month of June. Enjoy a standard arrangement of “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” and kick off your summer!

After you download your favorite song, don’t forget to practice it for June’s Musicnotes.com YouPerform Contest for your chance to win a $100 gift certificate to our store! Keep with us for May’s round of voting, too!

Narelle and Elaine’s musical journey began at a housewarming party where Narelle sang the song “Welcome to my World.” When speaking with Elaine after her performance, Narelle discovered that not only was Elaine a musician as well, but an active volunteer who dedicated her piano and accordion skills to perform music at local retirement homes and care facilities for the elderly.

Excited by the idea, Narelle offered to sing and perform with Elaine, who responded very warmly to the idea. Not long afterward, the duet began rehearsing and structured four or five musical programs over the course of the following year that were comprised of 30 or 40 songs per program. In Elaine’s experiences, she had learned that senior citizens are particularly partial to songs from the World War eras and had been playing most of the songs by ear prior to her work with Narelle. Unfamiliar with music from the era, Narelle felt she had a huge amount of learning to do, especially since there wasn’t a lot of sheet music on hand for those songs.

When Elaine didn’t have the necessary sheet music for a particular song, Narelle found herself struggling to learn the songs by ear. To find the sheet music, Narelle turned to Musicnotes.com where she usually found what she needed. Many of the songs on Musicnotes.com are arranged with a vocal line and corresponding accompaniment, so both musicians ended up benefiting from Narelle’s sheet music downloads. Narelle also found that she was surprised that a number of highly-popular short songs like “Daisy Bell” and “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” turned out to be the choruses of ballads with two or three verses.

While the journey for Narelle and Elaine hasn’t been easy, it’s been a rewarding one that has led them to their award-winning YouPerform contest entry of “(I’ll Be With You) In Apple Blossom Time.”

“Thank you, Musicnotes, for the monthly free sheet music and the opportunity to hone our craft through the YouPerform contest, and thank you to previous winners who advised to ‘make a piece your own’ and ‘find something to make it special’,” wrote Narelle and Elaine. Both performers also added their advice for contest entrants:

Narelle mentioned to us that other musicians should “be true to the sort of music you want to do and don’t let yourself be swayed by what others say is popular. Be courageous — stick with what you do best.”

Elaine’s advice is this: “If you’re given an opportunity, HAVE A GO, even if you think it’s beyond you. Very often you’ll find that with practice it wasn’t as hard as you thought it would be.” — April 2009 YouPerform Contest Winners

Musicnotes.com would like to extend its best wishes to Narelle and Elaine on their musical future. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about your April YouPerform contest winners, and that you’re inspired to sing or play an eligible song for this month’s YouPerform contest. Until next time, we invite you to watch the winning performance below.

Whether you’re honoring our veterans for Memorial Day or celebrating the Fourth of July, you might want to stop for a moment and think about the song, “Before You Go.” With lyrics written by Doctor Sam and music composed by John Melnick, this one song has been viewed over twenty million times and played around the world. Although “Before You Go” is a widely-shared song, the story behind how this song evolved truly shows how there is a song for each and every one of us.

At the heart of this story is a retired doctor named Dr. Sam, who leads the group “Dr. Sam and the Managed Care Blues Band,” specializing in entertaining and humorous songs for the health care industry. In 2002, Dr. Sam was leaving an airport parking structure in Florida and handed his money to an older gentleman who worked as the parking attendant. The attendant muttered, “Gee, I took two bullets for this country and look what I’m doing.” Dr. Sam thanked him for his service, and the veteran started to cry. Shaken up by the experience, Dr. Sam drove home and wrote the lyrics to “Before You Go.” For three years, Dr. Sam searched for someone to set his powerful lyrics to music but couldn’t get anyone interested. As luck would have it, lifelong musician John Melnick joined Dr. Sam’s band in 2005. When Dr. Sam asked John whether or not he’d be interested, John had no idea how powerful this song would become. Two weeks after John sat down with Dr. Sam and the lyrics, “Before You Go” was finally finished.

You can listen to the song “Before You Go” here: http://www.beforeyougo.us/

After the song was finished, Dr. Sam put together a pictorial to illustrate the song’s lyrics and emailed the link to about a hundred friends and family. The effect of that one, single email was phenomenal. What started out as a few visits a day to http://www.beforeyougo.us snowballed into an average of sixty thousand daily visitors who have all listened to the song for free.

Performed in the House of Representatives for Flag Day in 2006, this single song of gratitude has touched people so deeply that they’ve sent letters, emails and responses to Dr. Sam and John. For John, this song has a tremendous connection for him because he grew up in the Vietnam era near Long Island, where the community was specifically built for the GIs that returned home from WWII. John expresses that, “My parents grew up in that period of time and this song is a way of honoring their generation.” John also shared with us a chilling reminder: the soldiers who served in World War II didn’t know what the outcome of the war was going to be. Although history books describe the winners of wars around the world, many of the men and women who served their duty were simply lucky to survive.

Although Dr. Sam and John could have capitalized on the song, they’ve decided to offer it for free because it’s the “right thing to do.” The message of honoring the soldiers and their sacrifices is so powerful to them, that they’ve allowed you to create your own pictorial set to the music on their website. In addition to their original video for WWII and Korean War veterans, they’ve also created a pictorial for soldiers who’ve served in Vietnam as well.

We also took a moment to ask John if there were any stories that stood out in his mind. Although every story is meaningful to him, there are a few stories that still cause him to pause and reflect, no matter what he is doing at the time. One letter he received was from a set of twin brothers; one lives in Colorado and the other in Arizona. These brothers were only nine years old when they were rescued from Auschwitz, where they were lost their parents. When Auschwitz was liberated, they were taken by a company of American soldiers who kept them with them for two months until they returned to safety. Although they grew up as Americans and are prosperous and happy now, the twins expressed that they owed their lives to the American soldiers who went above and beyond the call of duty to protect them. John concluded his story by saying, “It’s enough to say ‘Thank You’ as many times as possible before the soldiers leave this earth. Whether we agree with our country’s policy or not, they sacrifice our lives to protect us.”

John and Dr. Sam are still performing together today, and the popularity of their song still amazes them. Musicnotes.com would like to express our deepest thanks to both John and Dr. Sam for allowing us to get the story behind this song and feature it for Memorial Day. We hope you have the chance to listen to or play sheet music for Before You Go to say “Thank You” to a veteran or a soldier today.
