The Value of Getting a Degree for the Music Business (No matter what aspect)

Everyone – or seemingly almost everyone wants to be in the MUSIC BUSINESS – and I can understand that – as who doesn’t like music?  But the MUSIC BUSINESS is not for the faint of heart -

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.”   (Hunter S. Thompson)

Just because you’ve gotten a degree in ANY aspect of the music business – does not even come close to guaranteeing you a career in the Music Industry – in fact,  your chances are SLIM at BEST! 

It never ceases to amaze me that there are so many schools that are more than happy to take your money – to give you a “Certificate’ – to hang on your wall – and that’s pretty much all you’ll get out of it in the long term.  Sure there will be a lucky few that will get a job – but very few right out of school – and even fewer that will actually be able to maintain a decent career! 

As PT BARNUM once said – “There’s a Sucker Born Every day!”

I’m not saying don’t chase your dreams – but you may want to do some SERIOUS RESEARCH about the number of applicants vs. the number of jobs being handed out – and it won’t take long to figure out that unless you come up with a NEW WAY to monetize the music business – you’re stuck with what we’ve got and there’s JUST NOT ENOUGH MONEY or BUSINESS to go around! 

You might want to think about getting into Video Games as those sales FAR OUT SHADOW all forms of entertainment COMBINED!

What can I say – it’s the TRUTH as I see it!

Hi Steve: I don’t really know you personally, but I see your posts all the time and feel I have gotten to know you. Your work ethic is an inspiration to me. I have recently embarked on a new adventure. I am starting an internet marketing business that will give me the income and freedom to accomplish my goals. One of the things I like best about this is the ability to operate my business from anywhere I choose. All I need is my laptop and my cell phone. Are you sure that your FOREIGN SUB-PUBLISHING RIGHTS are not being passed from one sub-publisher in one country to another subdivision in another country and each taking their 25% share…

Many songrwiters or copyright owners will look at their Foreign Royalties as just a bonus – but sometimes those royalties can add to way more than one may think!

Especially southern roots, blues, and similar music are very popular overseas and in some cases are used in Films – where a writer gets a piece of the ticket price from the theater’s where the song has been played. 

Next time you get your Foreign Royalty check make sure to follow the money – find out if your foreign sub-publisher has or is using any subsidiaries – and then make double sure that they are not passing your song along from one place to another where each can take their 25% Cut!  If you think about 25% x 25% x 25% and so on can add up a one big amount – so make sure that you work closely with your licensing company (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC)  as well as Sound Exchange, and Harry Fox to make sure you’re getting paid – also make sure that your music is NOT being used on YouTube or in other places where you are not getting paid – if you find a use that’s not been licensed (either by Sync Rights, Mechanicals, Performance or otherwise) then make sure to let the Social Media Channel or wherever the infringement is being hosted to know immediately. 

Unfortunately, seeking redress is difficult as the ICJ (Int’l Court of Justice) isn’t going to help and traveling overseas to try to find out any information or even seek redress could prove to be a losing proposition – but there’s no mistake about it – if you’re not getting your music out internationally you’re missing out on a HUGE OPPORTUNITY!  One just never knows! 

Two malls in the United States will use a new tracking system to follow shoppers’ movements during this holiday season. This FootPath technology was created by UK company Path Intelligence and will be used to obtain information about which parts of the mall are the most and least popular as well as how long shoppers tend to spend at various stores. Accordingto company CEO Sharon Biggar, the technology lets them tell retailers, “you had 100 people come to this product, but no one purchased it.” She says that information can, “help a retailer narrow down what’s going wrong.”

Time flies – and we’ve just been so busy that it’s been hard to keep up!  We just launched this new venture in mid-June of this year.  But Jerry and I are about to start really promoting and marketing ButterMilk Media and Pawnshop Consulting Group Inc’s Joint Venture!  Luckily we had about almost 3 months where we were just buried with the International Pawn Symposium in Naples FL which was a HUGE success!  But that sort of put us behind on a lot of the news about what we’ve been up to since we first started! 

Jerry was asked to speak at the Mississippi (MS) Pawn Brokers Association for the Continuing Education in mid-summer that is now required for all pawn shops in MS. 

Jerry was kind enough to ask me to come over and record the video and audio and I took some photos as well – there are several Photos of Jerry that I’ll be posting in the days to come – and of course, a lot of photos of the pawnshop owners or workers in the pawn shops that were required to attend in Jackson, MS.   We had people from all around that area: Jackson, Pearl, Vicksburg, Greenville, and many more! 

Since ButterMilk Media is an affiliate company of Music Square One, I figured I’d add this post to MSO’s site! 

We also were doing some experimentation with Different Cameras – In Jackson we used a JVC Medium Quality HD Recorder which was a pretty nice little camera for the size and convenience of using it.  I also brought along my Sony Super Hi-8 just see what kind of “different” types of formats, as well as being able to do cuts, and many angles.   And or course with the SONY SUPER HIGH 8 – one can do some pretty creative stuff since this is an older format but a good one – Lastly we used my Zoom Q3 for just the Audio portion that was mounted on the Podium – so that’s going to give me a lot of choices when it comes time to post editing the video that time permitting I’d like to get this done –

Google SSL Update – The sad loss of organic keyword search data in analytics.

 Ok, so what does this controversial Google update mean?

Well to explain. Traditionally whether people signed into a Google property like G+ or Gmail or not and made a search that lead them to a website, that search query or keyword would be recorded by Google. The data could then be displayed in Analytics or similar tracking software used by the website owner that the search query lead that user to. The data would be recorded if the search lead the user to either an organic listing or paid advert. Not only that, tracking software would record all the page data that the user browsed on.

This has now all changed due to Google’s SSL update. Now if users are signed in, when they make a search, that search will be made over a secure connection. If the search lead the user to an organic result then the search or keyword data would not be recorded within Analytics or other tracking software. The data will now just say “not provided”. Not only that, tracking software would now no longer be able to track what pages the user browsed by that user.

This is considered a major blow for Website Owners, SEO companies and Keyword Conversion Analysis. It’s going to be more difficult to to find out what keyword searches people used to find a website.

Now for the controversial bit…

Although Google wont be passing on keyword data to the analytics tool and other traffic software for organic results, they will still allow the data to be shown if the search query lead the user to a paid advert. So effectively what Google is saying is “pay us for an adwords advert and we will give you the users keyword data” A little contradiction in my view which is upsetting a lot of people.

But wait…

We shouldn’t panic… Yet

This is update only effects the data on Google.com and for users that are signed into a Google property. Overall this only accounts for around 1-2% of all the searches at the moment. Yes as more people join G+ the new Google social network and sign up for Gmail accounts the amount of search data lost will go up.

As SEO and Internet Marketing professionals we will just need to get clever on capturing keyword data. Its not all lost it’s just going to be less convenient to find it.
