WhatsApp Now Free For Life!!

WhatsApp has announced that it was removing the nominal -- around 99 cents -- yearly subscription fee for the service. This means WhatsApp, which was earlier free for only first year of use, is now truly free for use. The announcement was made by WhatsApp founder Jan Koum at the DLD conference in Munich, Germany.

"It really doesn't work that well," said Koum, as reported by Recode. "We just don't want people to think at some point their communication to the world will be cut off."

However, even though the subscription fee was nominal it was one -- albeit very small -- source of the revenue for the site. With that gone, it wasn't clear how WhatsApp would make money. Although the service is owned by Facebook and has enough resources to keep manage its business even if it doesn't directly earn any revenue through the WhatsApp app. Also, the service was earlier made free in a few countries including India .

It also seems that -- just like Facebook -- WhatsApp may experiment with advertising even though when Mark Zuckerberg bought the app he and Koum both emphasised that WhatsApp would never serve advertisements like other chat apps.

According to Recode, the company plans to connect businesses and brands with consumers and earn money in the process. "Naturally, people might wonder how we plan to keep WhatsApp running without subscription fees and if today's announcement means we're introducing third-party ads. The answer is no," the company reportedly told Recode. "Starting this year, we will test tools that allow you to use WhatsApp to communicate with businesses and organizations that you want to hear from. That could mean communicating with your bank about whether a recent transaction was fraudulent, or with an airline about a delayed flight."

Even though WhatsApp has become the dominant chat app in the world with over 900 million active users, it has lagged behind in its monetisation efforts compared to apps like WeChat. Instead of being a simple chat app, WeChat has tried to turn itself into a platform that could support everything from gaming to e-retail transactions. Apps like WeChat have also explored ways to make money through add-on services like stickers.

It is possible that by exploring ways to connect people with brands, WhatsApp too is trying to turn itself into a platform. However, the company still wants to keep the WhatsApp experience intact.

"What we decided was that over the long term, the ads and monetisation would perform better if there was an organic interaction between people using the product and businesses," said Koum. "So instead of focusing on ads first, what we did was we built pages, and we made that free, that way as many businesses as possible could get into the network."

Naira Crashes Even Further To 300 Against Dollar

Stoppage of foreign exchange sales to Bureau De Change operators by the Central Bank of Nigeria failed to lift the naira as the currency exchanged for 300 against the United States dollar in Kano, 290 in Lagos and 292 in Abuja.
Financial experts said the naira would decline further, while private sector operators described the move as a welcome development.

The ban was announced on Monday, when naira trading at 285 against the dollar at the parallel market from 278 on Friday.

The Acting President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, told one of correspondents in a telephone interview that the currency traded against the greenback at 300, 290 and 292 in Kano, Lagos and Abuja a day after the CBN announcement.

“There is cut of (dollar) supply to the market. The BDC sub-sector has been murdered. We are not coping. The naira is going to head northwards. There is no solution in sight,” Gwadabe lamented.

The Head of Investment Research, Afrinvest West Africa Limited, Mr. Ayodeji Ebo, said the stoppage of forex sale to the BDCs meant that the CBN wanted everybody to apply to the banks for dollars.

He stated, “But we feel the pressure now will move from the BDCs to the parallel market. We will see significant spike in the value of the naira at the parallel market because the little supply to the BDCs have also helped to cushion the demand at the parallel market.

“It will further compound or increase the spread between the parallel market and the interbank market. So, it will also increase round-tripping and unethical practices within the financial system.”

On the lifting of the ban on cash deposits into domiciliary accounts, Ebo said, “I am still sceptical about how this will work except they are also assuring us that if you deposit it, you can consummate business with it.”

A professor of financial economics at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Leo Ukpong, said, “I don’t think the stoppage of dollar sale to the BDCs will solve the problem. The currency will depreciate some more.

“This move will make the naira to weaken more as demand for dollar will skyrocket because of the short supply.”

Members of the organised private sector, however, applauded the CBN for the stopping the sale of dollars to the BDCs and lifting the ban on cash deposits into domiciliary accounts.

The President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Dr. Frank Jacobs, said industrialists had earlier kicked against the funding of the BDCs by the central bank, adding that with the development, the forex could be channelled towards funding the real sector in terms of importation of raw materials.

On the removal of the restriction of cash deposits into domiciliary accounts, Jacobs said manufacturers were still waiting for more clarification as to how the money deposited could be utilised by the customers.

The Director-General, the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Cobham, said the forex sale ban was a welcome development.

According to him, although the BDCs are necessary in the economy, they are licensed entities and should, therefore, source for their own funds.

Also speaking on the matter, the Director-General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Muda Yusuf, lauded the forex policy review, noting that it had addressed the concerns of economic operators.

According to him, it is a source of worry that the CBN continues to maintain its official exchange rate at N199 to the dollar at a time of dwindling forex inflow.

“The pressure on the official window will persist. The risk of round-tripping and distortions in the foreign exchange market will consequently remain high,” he said.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi announced its latest budget handset, the Redmi 3. The device features all-metal construction and a large 4,100mAh battery, which are both unusual in phones below $250.

The 5-inch Redmi 3 runs on the company’s MIUI 7 Android software layer and packs a 720p display, an octa-core Snapdragon 616 processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB of onboard storage.

There’s a 13-megapixel camera with fast autofocus on the rear and a 5-megapixel snapper in front. You can use either two SIMs simultaneously or use one of the slots for a microSD card to expand storage by 128GB.
The Redmi 3 should be able to offer serious competition to budget favorites from last year like the $180 Moto G and the 4.7-inch Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 ($250).

Of course, it remains to be seen exactly how many hours of use Xiaomi can eke out of that massive battery; the company promises that the latest version of its MIUI OS includes optimizations to extend battery life by 25 percent.

It also hasn’t specified which version of Android is on the Redmi 3 — if it’s running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the built-in Doze mode that puts your phone to sleep could help you put off charging the device for even longer than usual.

The phone will become available tomorrow in China; as with other recent Xiaomi releases, the company is seeking feedback from its other markets before launching the device beyond its home country.

– Senate Leader Ali Ndume during a closed door session that last 90 minutes announced the disappearance of the budget document.

– The Senators were supposed to commence the consideration of the N6.08tr budget today, which is now reportedly missing, possibly stolen.

– Deliberation on the budget which would have begun Tuesday (today) would be delayed until fresh copies of the documents are obtained from the presidency, the Ministry of Finance or that of national planning.

– The Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Danjuma Goje, was subsequently mandated to lead a search for the documents and liaise with the presidency, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Ita Enang, and the national planning ministry on the matter.

– According to PREMIUM TIMES, senators of the Peoples Democratic Party are suspicious that the presidency might have colluded with the management of the National Assembly to quietly withdraw the documents after detecting some discrepancies in them.

-Lawmakers were not present with copies of the budget before they proceeded on Christmas and New Year holidays.

Microsoft has finally ended support for Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10

After its decline from being the world's most-used browser to one of the least-used in the space of a few years, Microsoft has finally killed off its Internet Explorer (IE) browser.
As of Tuesday, Microsoft ended support for all old versions of IE, including 8, 9 and 10, leaving only version 11, the most recent.

Those still using older versions of the much-maligned browser will receive an 'End of Life' notification telling them about the development and urging them to upgrade to IE 11 or Microsoft Edge, a brand-new browser for Windows 10 which is designed to work better with the modern web.

Old versions of IE will still be usable, but Microsoft isn't going to release any more security or technical updates going forward - meaning those still using these versions will become much more vulnerable to malicious hackers, and will generally have a worse browsing experience.
As recently as 2008, IE was the world's most-used browser, with 46 per cent of users across the globe accessing the internet through it, according to figures from W3Schools.
However, that market share had fallen from 85 per cent in 2002, and by the end of last year, only 6.8 per cent of people used Internet Explorer, with the majority preferring Google Chrome or Firefox.
