Making my way

Recently I sat down to read Kelly Rae Roberts book, Taking Flight. While reading, I found myself inspired by a particular section and I decided to start writing down the things that came to mind. The ways I could relate to her story. And this is what I found:

I took the safe route. 

When considering what to do with my life, I took the safe route.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Lots of people do it for one reason or another. My reasons stemmed from my upbringing. You see, I grew up in a house where 'security' was the one thing I wanted most and didn't have, so as I reached adulthood, it was obvious that security is the one thing I would seek out. I chose the safe route.

In college, I majored in business for the sole reason that I believed I could get a job anywhere with a Business Degree. I would never have to worry.

But my inner voice was always calling me to be more creative.

Perhaps that's one of the reasons I began pursuing photography on the side, so many years ago.

It's funny how the thing you think you need the most (in this case, the safe route) ends up becoming the least important part of who you are.

I was what you would call a job hopper. I usually stuck around for about a year and then jumped ship and latched on to the next great opportunity. 

Constantly searching for fulfillment, I felt like a prisoner that had to stay put inside those grey cubicle walls or else I might fall down a rabbit hole and lose the security I worked so hard to build. 

With each passing day, I would deliver (via the FedEx of my mind) one more reason why I couldn't pursue my dreams.  

It wasn't until the economy tanked and I was a let go from my advertising job that I finally saw the light.  

The day I allowed myself to open up to the possibility of soaring, was the day that I realized I had already taken flight.

I walked out of that building and launched myself directly into the bluest of skies, cascading around the white puffy clouds and bathing in the warm sunshine of a gentle Florida morning.

And just like that, I was free. Enveloped in the most amazing feelings I had ever felt.

I felt like my life had no limits. I felt like anything was possible and I was finally the director of my own destiny. I was empowered.

That was a year and a half ago and I grow more with each passing day. 

I am a photographer. I am an artist. I am a happiness fairy.

I am anything I choose to be and today, I choose to be love.

Easy like a Sunday morning

There is nothing quite like the feel of a Sunday morning.

Even if you were up until 2am, and nursing a little bug... when dawn breaks on a delicious Sunday morning, you realize exactly how wonderful life can be.

Armed with a warm cup of coffee, soft filtered sunlight streaming through the blinds that haven't yet been opened to the world, and a little Miles Davis gently scoring the soundtrack of a perfect morning, I get the sense that my soul is alive.

It's days like today that offer me the chance to recharge my inner light, reflect on all of the good that has come from the week and begin planning out ways to become my most creative self.

This blog is one of those ways and I am so excited to be finding my voice once again.

I've never actually had a personal blog that I committed to, but a few years ago I was writing quite a bit of poetry and posting it online.

That helped me discover a side of myself that I didn't know I had.

You see, I always assumed I wasn't a good writer because I never wrote well in school.

But I came to realize that if you open yourself up to your creative spirit, you will always find it is waiting just beneath the surface to give you everything you've ever dreamt of doing.

So, welcome to my little square of happiness in this great big universe of self-expression.

Living out our dreams

"I'll just wait until tomorrow. I don't have the time to pursue the things I love."

I hear these phrases or variations of entirely too often.

I understand that life happens. We all have to make money, and we all have responsibilities.

And most days it's hard to imagine adding one more task to our never-ending list of things to do.

But honestly, why are we here?
I say, we are here to live out our dreams.
To indulge in being our best selves everyday.
To love as hard as we can.
To experience as much of this world as possible.
To see the beauty that exists in everyday things.
To laugh until our belly's hurt and our cheeks are sore.
To enjoy every little step in this great big journey called life.

Honestly, you never know when your journey will end.
Why not make the most of each precious moment.

So next time you stop at the corner store, why not pick up a pair of rose colored glasses and begin to live the charmed life you've always wished for. You'll be amazed at how wonderful life looks once you have them on!
