»White Noise« is a cooperation project between raster-media and the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics. Artistic sound projects generated in the context of the scientific research institute will appear at irregular intervals. The themes and questions of empirical aesthetics research are taken up, questioned or challenged in very different ways. »White Noise« is conceived as an audio archive of the MPIEA artists in residence which records the artistic works on vinyl and documents the respective concepts and working methods in text form.

Victioria Keddie's »Pshal P’shaw« (white noise #002) is a multimedia exploration delving into phonetic expression's auditory and rhythmic nuances of phonetic expressions through an amalgamation of text, sound, video, data, and customized learning software. Drawing inspiration from the painter and architectural theorist Hermann Finsterlin who made speculative architectural renderings, the project originated during a residency at the Max Planck Institute of Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt in 2023.

The project's engagement with the sonic landscape of the eight diphthongs in US English, documented through recorded sessions at EEG labs with participants of diverse international backgrounds, is not just a technical analyses. The applied script for the recording session, infused with a contemporary Western US dialect, ventures beyond, exploring the primal essence of phonetic expression and its impact on the oral landscape of mouth, throat, and tongue.

This work focuses on the spoken aspect of language: the art of oration, conversation, and mimicry. It reflects the beauty of our perpetual change, speaking directly to our humanity and the raw, tender moments of existence. It embraces the awkward, beautiful and vulnerable essence of our shared human experience.

Victoria Keddie is a multidisciplinary artist delving into sound, video, installation, and performance. Her work uncovers hidden narratives within ordinary artifacts and spaces, emphasizing their role in shaping our collective story. The examination of acoustic phenomena and language is a recurring theme in her artistic work. Keddie’s current projects navigate the acoustic complexity of language and dialects.

For over a decade, Keddie was co-director of E.S.P. TV, exploring the televisual medium for performance and sound. Keddie has performed and exhibited internationally. Recent fellowships include the NYSCA/NYFA for Music/Sound (2022), the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (2023), and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Sound Art and Experimental Music Fellowship (2024).

In April, we had the honour of hosting one of the all-time greats: Intergalactic Gary. We're thrilled to finally share the recording of his set that night at Low Profile Studios, so you can relive the dancefloor magic. Ghazel is the sound of two musicians in conversation — curious, open, playful. A meeting of hearts and minds. A living organism.

Composed of Farah Kaddour on buzuq (TILT, SANAM) and Marwan Tohme on guitar and electronics (Postcards, SANAM), the Lebanese duo began as a spontaneous pairing: an improvised acoustic set at Dar Onboz’s Ahel el Dar concert series in 2022. That performance planted the seeds for what would become Ghazel — a seven-track album of minimalist, exploratory, and emotionally resonant compositions, recorded between Tunefork Studios in Beirut and Tohme's home in the Lebanese mountains. Released via Ruptured, Ghazel captures a moment in time for a project in flux.

While both artists are experienced collaborators — within acoustic ensembles and indie rock bands — Ghazel strips things down to their essence. Kaddour’s mastery of the buzuq shines throughout: her playing is fluid and expressive, both grounded in tradition and fearlessly experimental. Tohme responds with subtle yet vivid interventions — plucked guitar, ambient drones, processed electronics, noise and texture. Together, they deconstruct and reimagine Arabic folk motifs, letting melodies emerge, unravel, and return.

Opener “Kayfa Taltaqi el-Qulub” (“How Hearts Meet”) feels like a statement of intent: the gentle unspooling of a musical language — melodic figures and ringing buzuq backdropped by spectral soundscapes. In “Nawal,” Kaddour strums the buzuq like a guitar, her wordless humming drifting through the track like a lament across a vast expanse. "Ghazel” (“Yarn”) recalls the roots of the project, with unprocessed guitar and buzuq weaving tightly around each other, two musical voices merging into one. Other tracks flirt with noise, loops, and drones. “Wulidna Fil-Barzakh” (“We Were Born in Purgatory”) transfigures the buzuq into a ghostly shimmer that shifts and meanders across time and space.

There’s something deeply alive in these recordings — unsurprising, perhaps, for a project that grew out of live performances and retained that improvisational spark. It is spontaneous and spirited — a captured breath. Though both artists remain key members of the experimental group SANAM, this project stands apart — its own world, its own sonic vocabulary. Ghazel is both rooted and exploratory, intimate yet expansive. A quiet kind of magic.

Lost Coast: Some Visionary Music from California (1980-1992) assembles little-known sounds from California’s metaphysical underground. Each recording is stylistically different—dream pop, guitar soli, fourth world, avant-electronic—but they are held together by a regional ethos of the “visionary.” This is music that sees through the mind’s eye and conjures new worlds.

Some people say that California is where “the nuts stop rolling”—where those too eccentric to fit in elsewhere often find themselves. What was meant pejoratively is easily reclaimed as a celebration of the free-thinking and the freely-freaking. Until the turn of the millennium, all manner of seekers rolled westward until they hit the pacific. Stationed along this edge, music was a way to roll still further, imagining territories unencountered and wavelengths as yet unheard.

Lost Coast is a commemoration of the people who made these journeys and a resurrection of recordings they made little effort to broadcast. While some pieces were originally released with modest distribution, others were only shared among friends or never shared at all. All tracks were found on cassettes in flea markets, barn sales, rural thrift stores, and even stranger places—outside a gem and mineral shop, for example, and on the ranch of a retired mescaline dealer.

Regardless of their obscurity, these recordings are eminently listenable. California, after all, is a place where the strange and the pleasurable are frequent bedfellows.

Far from the brightest spots in the hype system, hailing from the western genovese area, St.Ride is an eclectic duo, experimenting obscure, disturbing and twisted sides of electronic/ambient music since 2001.
There's an irrational stream of consciousness, a free flow between the acid beats and the cold and distant synth pads, and actually we can say that the band composed by Maurizio Gusmerini and Edo Grandi has many ways and languages to underline the disintegration of the song shapes, preserving the echoes of the melodies that somehow survived.
There's a unique imaginary behind the sounds of St.Ride that hasn't been planned up for a specific target, It's more like a genuinely surrealistic painting of the decline of post-modernism and the constant corrosion of the middle class, with no sweetening and mercy regarding bourgeois moralities.
The returning new album "microstorie", four years after previous "Conquistare il mondo" CDR, is the gathering of two decades of investigation beneath the skin of human frailties, as an eretic mantra, rising from the guts of pain towards to the dissolution of the ego.
