It's all people who one way or another are stretching things. I love music that's rooted in strong melodies or rhythms, but I love it even more when these are eaten away at, undermined and pulled apart. Hopefully this is a mix that takes you on a journey and shows how broad 130701's scope might be.

Baleine 3000 is a trio composed of local producer Lawrence Le Doux, France’s DJ Afrojaws, and Japan’s Illreme (who most recently released a single of lush modern disco via Mister Saturday Night). This international coalition came together by chance when Le Doux was introduced to Osaka’s Illreme while searching for a Japanese rapper in the late 2000s. Le Doux sent over some of his productions and Illreme, real name Jun Kamoda, wrote in spurts blending his native tongue with English. The pair met up at different times to work together but the tracks disappeared inside Le Doux’s hard drive, forgotten until one of the Vlek founders stumbled across them and recognised the genius within. And so, Baleine 3000 is back after six years with a 7-track EP compiled by Afrojaws.

The Nap is a slice of international oddball rap, full of dreamy beats and vinyl fuzz. It opens with ‘Gonna Rain’, a wavy beat propelling forward with smudged overtones and Illreme switching between rap and falsetto. The title track is a lullaby to dreaming the day away, delicate guitar melodies filtering in and out of consciousness as the rapper ponders how the story is always over before you wake up. Then comes ’Fried Oyster’, a strange ballad built on distorted rock loops that could be an ode to one of the most delicious items on an izakaya menu, or not. ‘Europ’ is the most straight forward rap track of the lot yet still manages to surprise and delight with floating percussion and organ melodies. Completing the EP are two instrumental cuts, including a lengthy Ambiant mix of ’Heroica’, and an interlude that bring the listener back to earth. When did the story end?

The Nap is brought to life with a limited edition 12” vinyl featuring a cover created by Dimitri Runkkari using an analog typo-press and engraved artwork on the B side by Jeff Ablezot.

The Nap is rap but not as you know it, testament to hip-hop’s universal appeal and ability to transcend boundaries.

J’ai commencé en créant une page myspace. C’était l’époque ou l’on pouvait encore considérer myspace comme l’une de nos révolutions, où tout n’était pas si saturé. J’ai contacté quelques groupes de manière anonyme parce que je tenais à cette notion de projet sans visage. Ce qui comptait, c’était de mettre en avait cette idée, cette envie.
Les premiers à répondre ont été les Blue Sabbath Black Fiji. C’est comme ça qu’Atthletic Duddes est devenu un “label”. Je ne m’attendais pas à avoir “autant” de retours, de personnes motivées pour faire un artwork. Des gens comme Neil d’Astral Social Club ou Laurent/èl-g m’ont écrit pour me proposer de faire une cassette.
J’ai toujours su/ voulu que ce projet serait/soit éphémère. Je l’ai mené dans une certaine urgence. Sans doute parce qu’à ce moment de ma vie j’en avais également besoin. J’ai apprécié cette spontanéité que je ne retrouve pas toujours avec Atelier Ciseaux. Parce qu’il faut dealer avec des presseurs, respecter des deadlines plus précises… et parce que malgré tout/nous il y a toujours cette notion d’argent qui pèse sur les petites structures.
C’est en discutant avec Olivié d’Amour & Discipline que j’ai pris conscience qu’il était dommage que si peu de personnes aient pu écouter ces cassettes (limitées à 30/50 copies). J’ai donc contacté tous les groupes en leur demandant s’ils étaient ok pour que l’on mette toute la discographie d’Atthletic Duddes en téléchargement libre. Et tout le monde était partant.

A cause d’un crash de disque dur, j’ai perdu la plupart des photos des cassettes. Tout ce qui reste provient de la mémoire faible d’Internet. Vous pouvez donc télécharger et découvrir toutes les sorties. Pour l’occasion, un petit site a été créé avec toutes les infos.

Je repense souvent à ce projet avec beaucoup d’affection. Je voulais également en profiter pour remercier tous les groupes, toutes les personnes qui ont fait des artworks, donné des cassettes, prêté des lecteurs-enregistreurs, m’ont supporté et usé de leurs jolies mains. Et m’excuser auprès de Motherfucking de n’avoir jamais sorti leur cassette.
