Their long mane and tails flowing to the rhythm of their pounding hooves as their muscles ripple under radiant coats of many different colors. This blog chronicles two cowboys' training of four mustang horses and a Quarter horse! TnT give these magnificent animals a second chance through gentle training that imbues their love of horses, patience, and perseverance.

<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="self" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/mustangncowboys" />
<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="hub" href="http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com/" />

Rafter T Bar Ranch ~ Pecos, TX

Well, Travis and Tony and the mustangs have been in Texas for 4 years now! They have been working at the prison and gone through two riots, helped their step dad, Shot Paschal and their mom (me) on the Paschal Ranch, do daywork for some of the local ranchers and have a ranch of their own.

The Rafter T Bar Ranch is what they call home now. The horses are right out the front door and the dogs can roam (when they are not sleeping under the wrap-around porch that is!)

In the pictures above, TnT are roping off of Cahlibur (Bay) and Coal (Black) on our ranch outside of Mentone, TX.

Alot has happened in those 4 years and fortunately I have taken thousands of pictures to document those years. I will be posting more in the future and look forward to perusing all those pictures...LOL!

Cahlibur has been away for a month having a procedure done that will dissolve the calcified bone in his right front ankle (ring bone)! The video above is a conglomerate of photos that I took the day (March 9th) he came home from the vet. As you can see the horses let me know when the guys were pulling down the lane with the horse trailer and even the cows came to welcome Cahlibur...
<img My guys were heading home to clean up.

When it hit me that I had left my customer high and dry, I looked back to see that a co-worker had stepped in and helped the customer. He was explaining to her the reasons for my actions as she nodded her head toward me. She understood.

I showed the guys the local newspaper headlines that pictured an aerial view of the destruction as they asked me if I could get their CERT Team uniforms cleaned so that they could report back to the prison in a couple of hours. They had volunteered to work through the night even though technically they were on their weekend. I found out later, when I took their clean uniforms (from the local cleaners), that they didn't have to report back until 6pm. This gave them time for some well deserved sleep. As can be expected they were now on 12 hour a day, 7 days a week shifts until further notice.

Blogger's Note: It needs to be mentioned that the prisoners at this facility here in Pecos are not citizens of The United States. They are protected by the rules and regulations of the Geneva Convention enforced by the Bureau of Prisons and GEO Group. Also, the CERT Team embodied by the courageous men and women employed at this facility, did an outstanding job of working together to ensure the safety of prison personnel, the public and the prisoners during this riot. I am proud of you all!

MnC's Disclaimer: At no time is excessive force, cruelty or brutality used when training the horses pictured in this blog. this picture showing flames and smoke coming from the prison. Special thanks to the Pecos Enterprise.
Travis and Tony are still working out at the prison. I have not talked with them since the call on Monday and have been diligently feeding the horses and dogs until I hurt by back Wednesday morning getting ready for work. Our wonderful friends have come to my rescue on feeding the horses, so that I can use all my energy taking care of Katy, Rusty, Jessie & Cody.

I have proof that these dogs are intuitive and know when something is ailing you! They knew that my back was killing me and therefore did not jump up to say "Hi!" Not one of them jumped on me. Rusty kept rubbing up against my legs as if to say "Where are our masters?" I made sure they had plenty of water and food and untangled Rusty's chain. We have to keep him chained up so that he doesn't take the kids out for a stroll in the neighborhood.

Katy has been a little protective of the food lately, so I lovingly stroked her head while I gave a handful to Rusty and Jessie who were hovering near the food bowl, letting them eat out of my hand as I slowing moved it so that they were eating out of the bowl along with Miss Kate. Cody had retreated under the house, probably waiting for his mom to finish so I took a couple of handfuls over to him.

I can tell that they are missing Travis and Tony about as much as I am...

MnC's Disclaimer: At no time is excessive force, cruelty or brutality used when training the horses pictured in this blog. Detention Riot Over 2/2/09

Travis called at 9:33pm to let me know that everyone is okay and to see how the horses and dogs were doing! They are working on getting the prisoners settled. He and Tony were able to go home early this morning long enough to take showers and get back to the prison. Travis also said that the CERT team wants to get together outside the prison. I asked him was it because everyone had done their duty, and he replied "Oh, yeah!" At this point, all the questions that I had just rolled away when I heard his voice. Just knowing that they were okay was enough for this mom's heart. Now I can sleep...

MnC's Disclaimer: At no time is excessive force, cruelty or brutality used when training the horses pictured in this blog. Tejano's mother is a registered Australian Shepherd named "Tobaccy" and his pop is "Bear" one of Kate 'n' Rusty's pups born in Texas right after the guys moved to Pecos. Estevan, a fellow worker at the feed store, took Bear to live on his ranchero north of Pecos. So, it is only fitting that this little pup be named Tejano. A twin pup to Tejano has found a home with the editor of our local newspaper. I can't wait to get pictures of him and see what they have name him!

I am not sure who got this little guy, I was gone to lunch when his new owner picked him up. If you haven't noticed this litter was brought to the feed store to find homes for these adorable babies. And the guy who remains faceless is Estevan.

Tony getting ready to give Belle her medicine. Detention Riot Continues 2/1/09

Yesterday afternoon Travis and Tony were working cattle up north when they received the call that the CERT Team had been activated. It took them a couple of hours to get back to Pecos, drop Coal and Oakley off at the corrals, grab their CERT gear & boots and head to the prison pulling the horse trailer.

I threw hay right before they pulled into town so they would not have to worry about feeding. As the night wore on, it became apparent that something was going on. TnT didn't call to tell me that they were safe at home. So I went online to see if there was any coverage of the riot. Sure enough, it was a repeat of the riot in December, except it involved R1 & R2, (Were the guys work) instead of R3. The prisoners have burned the commissary, booking, and the infirmary. Also, there is damage to the kitchen and some of the housing units.

Last night Tony called at 9:47pm to ask me to take care of the dogs and horses until I heard from them again. All that he told me was that the CERT Team activation was not a drill and that this time was worse than the December riot. I don't expect to hear from them until they are on their way home, so in the meantime I will pray, haunt the online newscasts, and try to go about my normal routine while my sons are in harm's way.

UPDATE: (10:45 PM)- Prison Riot At Reeves County Detention Center 1/31/09

LATEST: Riot in Progress at Reeves County Detention Center

Riot continues at West Texas prison

On a brighter note: The horses are doing great! As the guys left the corrals in a hurry last night, Cahlibur jumped, kicked and trotted all over his pen. If I didn't know that he has ringbone and has been lame, I would not have been able to tell it! I didn't write to let you know that Belle hurt herself somehow on Christmas Eve. It was after dark when the guys pulled in to feed. Tony noticed that Belle was acting different and when he pulled the truck around to shine the lights on her, all he saw was blood from above her right front knee to the ground. Further inspection showed that she had somehow cut herself pretty deep. Tony left several messages with the local vet, called me and loaded her up in the trailer for the short drive to the clinic.

We were waiting for the vet when a rancher pulled in with a cow that had a prolapsed uterus. They had been able to get a hold of Doctor Box and he would be there any minute. (They were the reason we got nothing but answering machine!) Doctor Box pulled in looked at Tony holding Belle's leg and said "I didn't know about this one!" as he pulled around to work with the cow first.

By the time I got back with Triple Hamburgers, fries & Dr. Pepper's from Dairy Queen for the guys, Doctor Box had Belle stitched up and was wrapping her leg. She was so drugged that Tony rode in the horse trailer with her back to the corrals. We can only guess that she was kicked by one of the other horses (Cahlibur or Clancey), because there are no sharp areas within their corrals. There were no signs that she received this wound on the pipe fencing either.

I will share pictures of the horses in the next post...and pictures of Kate 'n' Rusty's grandpups!!!

MnC's Disclaimer: At no time is excessive force, cruelty or brutality used when training the horses pictured in this blog. However, since the guys were on the cert team and all the inmates had to be pat searched, they didn't get home until 10:30 am to complete a 29 hour shift. I received a call that they would have to stop by the hospital and then they would stop by the Feed Store?!!?!!?

As it turned out, after the inmates burned down the "rec" center, they found a way to break off up to soccer-sized concrete blocks from the handball court wall to throw at the cert team and one connected with Travis' hand. Negative on the broken hand! One cert member was spun around with a block to the shoulder and another member was yanked back into the building as inmates tried to pull him into the yard...

When the riot broke out, Tony was guarding a crane that was working in the yard, so he was left standing in the yard, (chomping at the bit!) until he was relieved to get his gear and join the rest of the cert team and his brother. He said that what he saw looked like something from a medieval movie. The inmates had found a way (possibly with coats turned into sling-shots) to catapult hundreds of concrete rocks with uncanny accuracy at the cert team that was working on clearing all the inmates out of their cells into the yard.

Travis was escorting an inmate to the shoe (solitary confinement) and was one of the first to respond to
r3. He said that as they worked on clearing the inmates out of their cells, each unit got harder to sweep. At one point there was at least 800 inmates trying to keep the unit door open and by shear team work they got the door shut and locked! When all was said and done, Travis sustained several bruises and his helmet sustained many blows to the left side.

From the guys descriptions of their gear I visualize beefed up versions of the Federation Troops in Star Wars! Except all black!! I will leave the who, what, where, when and why details to the authorities and just thank God that the hostages, the cert team and the rest of the prison staff are safe and sound and that the S.W.A.T. team and other law enforcement entities were not needed to gain back control of RCDC3!!!

p.s. A couple of years ago while gathering cattle, Cahlibur tripped and broke the tip off of both coffin bones. Because of this he came up lame and he has been stable bound with short periods of time in a turn out pen or arena so that he could relieve some of his energy.

Cahlibur is an easy keeper and only has to look at food to gain 50lbs! So it has been a battle to keep him from beefing out. Knowing the extra weight would not help his lameness. After moving to Texas, were he has a bigger pen to walk around in and eating grass hay for a couple of months, he has lost most of his extra pounds.

Saturday TnT took him to a specialist that lives 3 hours away. After taking x-rays, the veterinarian suggested two courses of action. The first is to inject ethanol into the area to dissolve the calcified buildup and therefore aleviate the pain or the second course would be to operate cleaning out the buildup and fusing the bones in the effected area together with a plate and screws (like my back). The percentage rate of the second course is considerably higher with the only set back of at least a year of rest so that Cahlibur can recover.

Travis opted for the operation and will be taking Cahlibur back for his 10 day stay. When Cahlibur comes home he will have a cast on and will resume his stall rest. In the meantime Travis is riding Oakley (my Quarter Horse).

The rest of the herd is doing great and everyone enjoyed the thunder, lightening and rain last night!!!

Click Here to Visit BLOG VILLAGE

MnC's Disclaimer: At no time is excessive force, cruelty or brutality used when training the horses pictured in this blog. TnT moved here in September of 2007, I no longer had a captive audience to film. Daily training of our Mustang horses and Quarter horse mare were 1100 miles away. The puppies were growing up fast!

Now, seven months later, I made the move from California to Texas in a 26' UHaul. As I traveled along I40 in the company of two dogs and two cats, I recalled the events that transpired so quickly to make this move possible.

In February we had a family reunion in Arizona. My brother and I traveled from California to attend and TnT came in from Texas. After the reunion I traveled back to Texas with the guys for a two week visit. Within the first week of vacation I was building a website for the Feed Store and they had offered me a full time job! Before vacation was over I had talked with several people that wanted websites built or rebuilt and maintained.

Now, I had to make the decision if I wanted the job...let's see...move back to Texas...near TnT and the critters...you bet!!! Pecos is a small west Texas town of about 9,500 people. In the picture posted on Wikipedia, in the link above, a boot company that is making a pair of boots for TnT is situated in the fifth storefront from the right of the picture. To the left of the photographer is the West of the Pecos Museum and behind is the old depot, the future home of the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame!

Talking about the Hall of Fame, stop back by in the near future for a link to the new website. As the newest member of the Hall of Fame committee, I will be building a website to commemorate the Grand Opening scheduled during the 126th Annual "West of the Pecos RODEO". I am on that committee too, and will be maintaining the Rodeo website as well!

Now that I am almost settle in my place, I will be able to post regularly to this blog! My computer is set up at TnT's new duplex and I should be able to move in to my remodeled duplex next week. I will keep my computer set up at the guys place until I know for sure that I have phone and internet service!

If you ever find yourself "West of the Pecos"...drop in!!!

Janey Loree

Click Here to Visit BLOG VILLAGE

MnC's Disclaimer: At no time is excessive force, cruelty or brutality used when training the horses pictured in this blog. LOL! Even when he is ground tied, he follows Tony with his ears and just when I thought I caught him...well you know the rest. Oakley's ears are forward however she is behind Trav. There is a possibility that we will be going on a gathering on Tuesday! Would be great to get pictures...

To Be Continued...

Click Here to Visit BLOG VILLAGE

MnC's Disclaimer: At no time is excessive force, cruelty or brutality used when training the horses pictured in this blog. She was named after some of the sires in her lineage and her owner at the time of registration. That is why TnT nicknamed her "Oakley"!

Travis was spinning Oakley in a circle in this photo. When they got finished spinning, Travis stated that he felt her little outburst coming from the time he was saddling her!

Before the spinning episode, Travis was working Oakley on the fence, and I could tell that she was getting better with her right turns. She likes turning left more that turning right. But when she shot past the edge of the fence into the opening...it was time for a few circles for my little girl.

I guess I shouldn't say "little" she has really got some muscle on her and will really "hulk" out when the guys get to work her more that two times a week. There is a rumor that they will be going back to 8 hour work days soon! It would be great if that happened while I am here in Pecos.

After the spinning episode, Oakley responded to Travis with alacrity.

To Be Continued...

Click Here to Visit BLOG VILLAGE

MnC's Disclaimer: At no time is excessive force, cruelty or brutality used when training the horses pictured in this blog. He rode out in the desert with Travis on Oakley for a little bit while I soaked in the Texas sun. There I sat on the back of the Dodge, while my cowboys worked with their horses! Their dogs following as they checked out everything along the trail.

When they got back, Tony asked if I wanted to ride Coal? Did I want to ride Coal! Yes, I wanted to ride! I felt the tensions and worries that this life places on your shoulders just melt away...

...I rode around with Travis and Oakley for a little bit and realized that I would definitely have to get back to Texas so that I could ride whenever I wanted. The guys talked about getting a horse of about 15 hands for me to ride! Yipee!!!

I look forward to the time that we can go on trail rides together again...

To Be Continued...

Click Here to Visit BLOG VILLAGE

MnC's Disclaimer: At no time is excessive force, cruelty or brutality used when training the horses pictured in this blog.
