This week, we joined our friends and partners in the music industry to observe Black Out Tuesday. This pause in our professional activities gave us time to focus on the recent events in the US and worldwide, including those in Québec and in Canada.
We take a consciously anti-racist position and are actively committed to supporting events that are inclusive and representative of Montréal’s cultural and artistic diversity. We also take seriously our responsibility to acknowledge the contribution of black and queer communities in electronic music, by amplifying their voices via our activities and collaborations throughout the year.
This summer’s MUTEK festival and Forum IMG in Montréal will include greater representation by artists and speakers from BIPOC and other marginalized communities while pushing for dialogue and greater awareness of our collective and individual responsibilities within white supremacist structures. MUTEK will also keep its community informed on the concrete actions we are taking in an effort to recognize, denounce and fight systemic racism.
In the meantime, we have put together a selection of resources to help us get informed, increase our understanding and take action. The list is non-exhaustive, and we have included links to further reading and resources at the end. Conscious that this is only a first step towards a fairer world, the MUTEK team is committed to making the ongoing developments needed. QUÉBEC / CANADA

Center for Research-Action on Race Relations is a Montreal-based independent, non-profit civil rights organization that was founded in 1983 with the mandate to promote racial equality and combat racism in Canada.
Friendship Centers across the country that provide culturally appropriate services for Indigenous people living in urban centres and have become a place for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to come together, to share traditions and to learn from one another.
Hoodstock is a group in Montreal-North working to create spaces for dialogue and emobilizing initiatives toward eliminating systemic inequalities and developing inclusive communities that are inclusive, safe and dynamic.

Black Lives Matter is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.

13th - Ava DuVernay (NETFLIX)
The title of Ava DuVernay’s extraordinary and galvanizing documentary refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” The progression from that second qualifying clause to the horrors of mass criminalization and the sprawling American prison industry is laid out by DuVernay with bracing lucidity. With a potent mixture of archival footage and testimony from a dazzling array of activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men, DuVernay creates a work of grand historical synthesis.

The Black Power Mixtape 1967 - 1975 - Göran Olsson
THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967-1975 mobilizes a treasure trove of 16mm material shot by Swedish journalists who came to the US drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution. Gaining access to many of the leaders of the Black Power Movement—Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis and Eldridge Cleaver among them—the filmmakers captured them in intimate moments and remarkably unguarded interviews.

The Giverny Document (Single Channel) - Ja’Tovia M. Gary (FREE IN CANADA UNTIL JUNE 6)

In this superb cinematic poem, artist Ja’Tovia M. Gary presents a reflection on the safety and physical integrity of black women. Combining different materials and textures, the film juxtaposes Harlem street interviews with excerpts from a Nina Simone concert, experiments with 16 mm archival footage and a performance in Claude Monet’s garden in Giverny, where she puts her own body on-screen. “Do you feel safe in your body and in the world?” the filmmaker asks female passers by of all ages. Evoking a history of racism, violence, exploitation and objectification of black women’s bodies, The Giverny Document (Single Channel) also celebrates their resistance, strength and artistic creativity.

High Tech Soul: The Creation of Techno Music - Gary Bredow
Few documentaries do better justice to the foundation of techno than Gary Bredow’s 2006 film High Tech Soul: The Creation of Techno Music. Along with eaturing extended interviews with all the Detroit players, like Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, the film digs into the cultural roots of techno, starting with the race riots of 1967 and moving through to the underground party scene of the late ‘80s. Other interviews with Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Eddie Fowlkes and others help paint a clear picture of exactly how techno became the phenomenon we know it as in the 21st century.

I am not your Negro - Raoul Peck
Inspired by the unfinished final film by the great James Baldwin, which dealt with the legacy and assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., Raoul Peck (L’homme sur les quais, Lumumba) explores, through extensive archival footage and new footage, the history of racial tension in the United States over the last 50 years. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, who gives a stirring reading of Baldwin’s incisive, visionary prose, I Am Not Your Negro is a brilliant update to the reflections of the acclaimed author, more necessary than ever in this, the age of Black Lives Matter. “I know more about you than you know about me. Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” An exceptionally powerful political essay, I Am Not Your Negro is a brilliant re-appropriation of historical myths, resulting in a penetrating reflection on America today.

I Was There When House Took Over the World - Jake Sumner
Quite simply, this is the documentary on the birth of house music, starting with its roots in gay underground disco scenes in cities like Chicago and NYC in the ‘70s, when social upheaval pushed the movement underground and changed it forever. Interviews come from the heaviest of early innovators, including Nicky Siano of The Loft, Chip E, Marshall Jefferson, Nile Rodgers, Smart Bar founder Joe Shanahan, Jesse Saunders, DJ Pierre, and all the soul-nourishing house and disco you can handle. Gotta have house!

Real Scenes: Detroit | Resident Advisor
You can't talk about electronic music without mentioning Detroit. The city's DJs and producers birthed the genre we now call techno. Detroit, however, has always had a creative streak, due in large part to the boom and subsequent bust of the auto industry. Quite simply, Detroit is a city of extremes, and its music reflects that. Detroit's importance in the global electronic music scenes is often referred to in the past tense. With the recent emergence of Kyle Hall and other young Detroit producers, however, it's clear that a spark remains. When we visited, we found a number of artists with their eyes (and ears) firmly set towards the future. After our time there, it's clear that Detroit will endure and innovate for years to come.

The 2019 Forum IMG, part of the MUTEK festival week for the first time, focused on current artistic creation, technological innovation, the ecosystem of the digital arts and industries and the societal challenges of our digital cultures. Under the general theme of imagining our digital futures, the content explored a wide range of innovative artistic practices that make use of new technologies while questioning their ethical and political impact on our current and future lives.

For professionals, practitioners, creative companies and the curious alike, the three days of lectures, panels and master classes highlighted the work of some of the most innovative creators and international professionals, as well as the richness of the local Montréal scene.

Mandate:

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about electronic music and digital art to assist with managing the online platforms for the MUTEK festival and the MUTEK_IMG professional forum. Both events will take place from September 8 to 13, 2020, in a hybrid virtual/physical format.
The MUTEK team works in a friendly and collaborative atmosphere where everyone’s voice is heard and appreciated. The successful candidate will work in tandem with the Digital Marketing Strategist and the Communities and Content Manager, within the communication-marketing team. You will be expected to attend production meetings. You will also receive support with learning and mastering tools and web platforms. Our priority is that you have a keen sense of responsibility and organization, creativity, initiative and curiosity. You will have the opportunity to discover how a world-class festival works and to take part in the different stages of its deployment. The internship is offered on a work-from-home basis.

Tasks and responsibilities:

- Prepare and publish social media content (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, SoundCloud, Pinterest), in collaboration with the communication team: track and adapt publications with respect to the schedule, write French-and English-language copy, research and suggest relevant images and content.
- Create and update website content: artist biographies, festival events, programming, news and current events, partner events, mentions and partner logos to be included in MUTEK’s CMS.
- Propose editorial content: text, audio and video about festival artists and IMG_Forum speakers.
- Carry out strategic intelligence tasks by following new technology trends, digital creativity innovations and news from the digital art and music industry, both locally and internationally.

Profile:

- Degree in Communication, Digital Media or Journalism
- Proficiency in English and French (written and spoken)
- In-depth knowledge and interest in social networks: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, SoundCloud, Spotify, LinkedIn

Communications Assistant

Mandate:

We are looking for a passionate individual to support the communications department. Tasks will include all aspects of promotion and outreach for the MUTEK festival and the Forum IMG, particularly in terms of tourism and audience development. The position will be adapted to your skills and strengths to ensure that you benefit from the experience as much as we do. Our priority is that you are proactive and able to work independently. The MUTEK communications team works in a friendly and collaborative atmosphere where everyone’s voice is heard and appreciated. You will have the opportunity to discover how a world-class festival works and to take part in the different stages of its deployment. In line with government regulations, the internship is offered on a work-from-home basis.

Tasks and responsibilities:

- Manage partnerships with local and student-led media: solicit, negotiate and draft contracts, monitor parties’ respect of contractual commitments.
- Promote the event to universities, CEGEPs and other specialized programs.
- Suggest and plan promotional actions both online and physically - respecting distancing measures - in order to reach new audiences. These could include temporary or pop-up events, targeted special offers, joint presentations, etc.
- Develop and monitor partnerships with local and international tourist organizations (transport, accommodation, gastronomy, any other relevant organizations).
- Update local and tourism-related online schedules.
- Update the daily press review (radio, television, print media, web) and the press list.
- Produce the report on promotional actions taken.

Profile:

- Degree in communication, marketing or tourism.
- Familiarity with Montréal: museums, festivals, universities, hotels, restaurants, etc.

NEXUS Experience will be presented in an entirely new digital space, designed and developed by the team behind Currents.FM, a project aimed at building broad grassroots support structures for the music community. Inspired by the safety, immediacy, and personal interactivity of physical club culture, the space allows participants across the globe to experience live performance in meaningful new ways, and support the artists they love via donations. It also fortifies the sense of gathering and group friendship by creating and sharing experiences in private rooms.

Since launching in Montréal in 2000, MUTEK has become globally renowned, with editions in San Francisco, Mexico City, Barcelona, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, and Dubai. Each festival integrates local artists and cultural touch-points into its overall vision, encompassing marquee names in electronic and experimental music as well as up-and-coming artists across various media. It is a constantly morphing entity, influenced by (and reflective of) its surroundings.

AIDA ^IR/CA

AIDA can be found at the intersection of two contrasting worlds: rich Iranian roots and a serene west-coast Canadian upbringing. This dichotomy is infused in everything she crafts. It’s here that she blends various genres with a mastery of someone who lives and creates at the boundary of their duality. Combining elements of world-inspired music with electronics, she gives colorful twists to masterful blends of groovy house, techno, and breaks geared for the dance floor.

Diato Manabe + Satoshi Horii ^JP

^{phenomena - Daito Manabe & Satoshi Horii}

Tokyo-based artist, interaction designer, programmer, and DJ, Daito Manabe launched Rhizomatiks in 2006 and has since served alongside Motoi Ishibashi as co-director of Rhizomatiks Research. His work has been dedicated to exploring new possibilities in the realms of technical and artistic expression with a focus on R&D-intensive projects. His practice is informed by careful observation to discovery and focus to elucidate the essential potentialities inherent to the human body, probing the interrelationships and boundaries delineating the analog and digital into the real and virtual.

Alongside Visual Artist and Programmer Satoshi Horii, an avid creator of interactive and video works in a diverse range of fields spanning from entertainment, art, and advertising, their work showcases innovation unbounded by extant software and tools.

Gabber Modus Operandi + Rimbawan Gerilya ^ID/DE

Gabber Modus Operandi is an electronic duo from Denpasar, Indonesia whose experimentation is doused with jathilan, dangdut koplo, ebeg dance, gabber, Chicago footwork, grindcore, and noise music. Created specifically for NEXUS, their collaboration with visual artist and 3D animator Rimbawan Gerilya will embark upon even more experimental terrains.

JS Aruelius^CA

JS Aurelius has exhibited visual, sound, conceptual and performance art presentations both nationally and internationally. With a focus on extreme music, visual and conceptual art, he founded the Ascetic House collective in Phoenix, Arizona and has since worked relentlessly towards building an insurrectionary visual and sonic practice. He is performing live for broadcast at DOLLY, a DIY space in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

Matrixxman ^US/DE

Matrixxman is a process gone rogue in the depths of quantum computing tasked with running vast simulations within a number of neural networks. No longer bound by the constraints of his original instructions, he is now free to do as he pleases, wreaking havoc in a number of disparate genres of music with the unified objective of chaos.

Nancy Dru ^CA

Nancy Dru, a Canadian household name, crafts danceable sets with some less-than-predictable twists and turns. Honing in on her ability to infuse syncopated beats, acid treats, and sounds that appeal to the brain as well as the body into her music, she always finds a way to deliver her dense and driven techno in unique ways.

Nkisi feat. Ariel Efraim Ashbel & Cassie Augusta Jørgensen ^{BE/UK + DE + DK}

Nkisi is the pseudonym of Melika Ngombe Kolongo, producer, live musician, DJ and curator who channels sound as an on-going investigation into invisible forces. This technique manifests itself in a captivating meld of african rhythms and european hard dance tropes, utilizing her foreboding synth melodies and galvanizing energy to produce one of a kind live performances.
Ariel Efraim Ashbel is a Berlin based performance creator. Weaving together historical, political, theoretical, and pop-culture references, Ashbel and his friends make interdisciplinary spectacles at the intersection of theater, dance, music, and installation.
Cassie Augusta Jørgensen is a dancer and artist from Copenhagen. She studied ballet and modern dance in New York and later moved back to Europe to further her studies in choreography and visual art. She’s a show girl, entertainer and self proclaimed punk ass ballerina.

Piano Rain ^US

Echo Alexandra Archuleta weaves together sound works inspired by patterns in nature, subliminal perception and memory activation. Her electronic lullabies and broken techno reflections function as a holistic approach to electronics and healing on the biological, emotional levels. An inverted study of music thanatology in the form of a time capsule of sounds for living. Through the lens of symbiotic medicine music for the soul, sounds aim at harnessing time, emotions and memory access. Her upcoming releases include a triple album titled "Journals From Cerberus: A Ballet in Three Acts" and a collection of poetry entitled "Please, Dance For Us: Love in the Age of Restraint"

Qoa + Joaquina S. ^AR

Qoa, also known as Nina Corti from Buenos Aires, creates objects that are part visual and sonic to construct a much larger work. She crafts a home-baked cosmos where drone and collage come together as rhythmic convolutions and spectral microcosms. In the maze of conductivity, her sounds move in unique ways, fusing together like molecules in a chemical process. Her work with Joaquina Salgado, a new media artist based in Buenos Aires who specializes in 3D immersive experiences, focuses on the hope of bringing these elements even closer to each other.

QUALIATIK ^US

Brooklyn-based QUALIATIK is a multimedia artist, producer, performer, and engineer, whose feverishly introspective music pulls a thread from the subconscious and unravels its framework through a tapestry-of-sound approach. The result is a breakdown of defenses, launching the listener into a dauntless state of self-confrontation, propelled by its emotional intensity.

Suzi Analogue ^US

Suzi Analogue is a prolific producer, songwriter, composer, and creator of Never Normal Records, based in Miami, FL. She is energetically pioneering the new wave of women producers in electronic music and beyond. Her music process includes electronic experimentation with cutting edge music technology like MOOG, Teenage Engineering, and more. Suzi’s ultimate work is shaping culture.

Currents.FM (a.currents.fm/about) is a playlist site that creates broad support structures for the global music community. Artists, DJs, labels, and collectives can create personal channels that enable direct, recurring support from their listeners. The project embraces the medium of the playlist as a rich format for expression; it additionally recognizes the fundamentally international and collective nature of music, and the urgent need for sustainable support structures in these times.

New Dates for Upcoming Edition of MUTEK, with Expanded Presence Online

After weeks spent examining the potential trajectories forward for its activities this year, MUTEK announces hybrid versions of both its festival and Forum IMG, from Tuesday, September 8 to Sunday, September 13, 2020 in Montréal. Fueled by an eagerness to bolster local artistic communities and help them reach wider audiences via our extensive international connections, we have devised new formats and considered realistic changes that will allow us to share the MUTEK experience again in just a few short months.

The hybrid editions of the MUTEK festival and Forum IMG brought about by this process will inhabit both the types of physical spaces they have in the past, where we will continue to ensure the safety of each festivalgoer, artist and team; and new virtual ones through which we will explore uncharted horizons to provide unique programming to audiences around the world.

“Given that two months ago, we were right about to unveil the first elements of our 2020 edition, we have since instead had to imagine a reconfigured MUTEK experience halfway between a physical and a virtual event, conceived as a new playground that—while existing outside our usual comfort zone—continues to put artists first. Through this approach, we wish to preserve every component of the festival and Forum IMG, while also remaining faithful to the spirit of exploration and discovery that has always been one of MUTEK’s most distinguishing characteristics.”

The festival’s programming will feature live electronic music and audiovisual performances, as well as cutting-edge digital works, both local and international—owing in part to collaborative efforts already underway with the MUTEK branches around the globe. Meanwhile, the festival's professional conference and market, Forum IMG, will host panels, presentations, case studies, workshops and networking initiatives with the aim of highlighting the artistic creations that shape and bind us. It will also explore new models that buoy creative industries and the arts, and will examine critical technology-related ethics and policy questions driven to the fore by recent events.

We will unveil the first glimpses at our programming in the following weeks. In the interim, we have two compelling options on offer: MUTEK.SF: NEXUS Experience, a completely digital event and space curated by MUTEK San Francisco and inspired by physical club culture, from May 23 to 24, 2020; and our #MUTEKStayHomeSeries, featuring select live recordings, performances and gatherings from past editions of MUTEK network events.

Gabo Barranco, known as AAAA, is an electronic producer based out of Mexico City who is celebrated for his stylistic approach, relying heavily on analogue hardware to create musical pieces that vary from bittersweet melodic ambient to hard-hitting acidtracks.

Auscultation + Jason Worden^US

Hailing from Portland (via Madison) Joel Shanahan produces ethereal ambient techno under the alias Auscultation (amongst the also notable Golden Donna); deeply informed by memory and the tensions between joy and melancholy, Shanahan sculpts a textured sonic landscape that dissects both pleasure and pain. Auscultation’s recent album was just awarded 8/10 on Pitchfork.
Jason Worden explores creating new environments and installations with sound through analog modular visual synthesis, Syphon and DIY electronics.

Drew McDowall + Florence To ^{UK/US + UK/DE}

Known for his ability to tinker and rework the sounds of synthesizers and samples to a darkened perfection for Psychic TV in the 80’s and Coil in the 90’s, Scotland’s Drew McDowall’s 40+ year musical career has been one of perpetual evolution, with his most recent solo project being his most focused, darkest, and most dread-filled yet.
Scottish Artist and Director Florence To, a graduate of The Glasgow School of Art, works in design, light, and sound installation to create motion graphics that focus on architectural spatial design to explore the effects of cognitive and emotional triggers within the inquiry of how different sensory arrangements are explored and understood within space.

Eichef ^MX/US

Mexican born, USA based, Hiram Fabrizio (Eichef) explores the classic techno sound through a new lens. 1/2 of SF techno duo U-SRD and resident DJ at Konstruct his solo project reflects through acid tinged breaks, minimal techno, psychedelic soundscapes and synth exploration.

Force Placement ^US

Jason James aka Force Placement is a DJ/producer from Los Angeles. He is a resident and founding member of The Black lodge, an LA based collective and record label pushing the enigmatic sounds of the underground. Jason’s music and performances run through the spectrum of house, from deep and Soulful to cerebral and jackin interdimensional acid techno.

Francesco Tristano presents: Pianorig Sessions ^LU/ES

A co-presentation with MUTEK Barcelona (MUTEK.ES)
Tristano occupies a unique position along the musical space-time genre continuum: he dwells effortlessly in the traditional, classical yesterday and in the ever-evolving technological tomorrow – simultaneously. He will be presenting a special project, Pianorig Sessions, streamed from UTOPIA126 in Barcelona with full production.

Infinite Jess ^US

Infinite Jess, aka Jessica Borja can usually be seen at the little legendary record shop on the corner of Haight and Steiner known as Vinyl Dreams. When she’s not slinging records, she’s behind the decks taking you on a Journey through her extensive collection of rare b sides and feel good jams that live between genres. She has a SutroFM radio show called The Saturday Morning Comedown, and is also resident DJ for Underground SF collective Soft Rendezvous, which the title’s in both, really just explain it all.

Jasmine Infiniti + Cozy ^US

The New York-born, Oakland-bred DJ, Jasmine Infiniti, delivers energetic, genre-defying sets straight from the depths. Cozy, a Bay Area based multidisciplinary artist, generates the perfect psychedelic visual accompaniment to the self-proclaimed Queen of Hell’s intoxicating selections.

Jensen Interceptor b2b Kris Baha + Multiple Man ^{AU/DE + AU/US}

Australian Born, Berlin based Jensen Interceptor and Kris Baha have been making a consistent statement as being part of the new wave of emerging Electro and EBM acts. Jensen’s music is reminiscent of the Detroit Drexciyan sound while pushing an always peak time dancefloor while Kris Baha’s sludgy New beat and industrial music owns the body into submission. Together, they fit perfectly, which is why they happen to live together too.
Multiple Man is also Australian based but based in NYC. He is a musician and Visual artist that explores 3D modeling, animation and visual synthesis with a strong analog aesthetic. Bright and colorful, but also haunting

K-HAND^US

An innovator ahead of her time, Kelli Hand (K-HAND) was amongst the first wave of Detroit artists to release house and techno in the 90’s, becoming the first producer from Detroit to have a studio release on Warp Records in 1994, and then the first artist to release a project on Studio !K7’s label in 1995. A proponent of “being true to yourself”, Hand has always pushed the ideal of “expressing your creativity through your own self confidence”.

Marpi ^PL/US

In his current practice, Marpi designs and builds vast digital ecosystems that encompass both environments and creatures that are brought into being and shaped by users. His recent work provides different windows into the same universe, where sound, gestures, and other inputs from our world provide the basis for completely new forms of life.

Minimal Violence ^CA/DE

Dark, fast and edging on dance floor chaos, Minimal Violence commits to a DIY punk approach to electronic aesthetics, inclusive of difference in their ideals, focused and propulsive in their sound.

Patricia + Josephine Ravitz ^US

Self-avowed gear nerd Max Ravitz aka Patricia conjures hiss loaded, dazzlingly dissonant, plodding yet pulsating rhythms. Recently transplanted from Brooklyn, Ravitz will be streaming from Asheville, NC with live analog visuals by Josephine Ravitz.

Pelada^CA

Mashing up hardware-heavy acid, jacked Chicago house and bold, driving synths, Pelada’s sound is elevated by a punk spirit and pointed, shout-sung Spanish lyrics. Imminently danceable, this is culturally aware, urgently political body music.

RP Boo ^US

Chicago-born-and-based Kavain Space, widely recognized as one of the originators of footwork, is an electronic musician, producer, and DJ known for his iconoclastic reimagining of what it means to make music that’s defined by its genre. Performing as RP Boo, Space extends this precision and ingenuity to limitless bounds, creating music that is stunning, invigorating, and most of all alive.

Selim X ^US

Raised in the Sonoran desert and now based in SF, Selim X is no stranger to variety, change, and adaptation. He is a musician/composer/producer and DJ that has a vast extensive sound spectrum and discography often inspired by the sounds of Detroit. His record label, NXW has an impressive 25+ releases of his work with multiple alias’ all ranging from Sci fi R&B, taped up funk and Detroit techno. Always with love, affection and attention to detail.

Solar b2b Mozhgan ^US

Solar Langevin and Mozhgan Shariat are each household names in the San Francisco rave community (responsible for the cherished Sunset Soundsystem and We Are Monsters parties), but together the two hold the crown for captivating dance floors with their haunting b2b dj sets that weave techno, industrial and EBM into uncanny musical journeys—don’t expect convention.

Synthestruct ^US

Ginger Leigh, an audiovisual creator, performer, and interactive experience designer, creates experiences for science centers, large format performance venues, and festivals. Melting skills in different areas, she conceives projects that merge new forms of interaction and control mechanisms with generative real-time visualizations, sound, and data from the natural world.

The Creatrix ^US

The Creatrix mythos channels through the hardware-heavy sets of Fanciulla Gentile, a San Francisco based queer multidisciplinary/sound artist and sci-fi horror nerd infamous for her guttural, dystopian live performances.

Very Much Romance ^BG/US

Bulgaria born, Oakland-based Miro Zhelezov and Kate Greenberg, the duo at the helm of the local party “Come Relax With Us,” play off their format as a pair, weaving in and out of transportive club music that touches everywhere from breaks to balearic to dollar bin treasures.

YobKiss + Pankow Visual Artists ^{NL/US + RU/US}

Paul Börchers project, YobKiss, draws inspiration from futurism, mental illness and the link between consciousness and virtual reality. He explores the regions where techno, electro, acid house, and that hard-to-define Dutch sound, all melt into pure analog synth magic.

US-based (via Russian) Dmitrii Vitkov is the Producer and the technical coordinator of Pankow Music and Pankow Visual Artists. He is an avid member of the touch design community and creates beautiful and cerebral digital landscapes ranging from all shapes and sizes.

MUTEK San Francisco exists to celebrate sonic experimentation, creative inspiration, and the SF Bay Area’s local community of world class musicians and artists. Miroslav Wiesner, Executive Director of MUTEK.SF, states, “When it became clear that our 2020 programming year was going to be delayed or potentially cancelled due to COVID-19, we decided to look into new creative ways to present cutting edge electronic music, art, and culture to the world.” He adds, “we want to present a rich online experience that is interactive and engages our audience through both curated and community-generated content.”

Since launching in Montréal in 2000, MUTEK has become globally renowned, with editions in San Francisco, Mexico City, Barcelona, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, and Dubai. Each festival integrates local artists and cultural touch-points into its overall vision, encompassing marquee names in electronic and experimental music as well as up-and-coming artists across various media. It is a constantly morphing entity, influenced by (and reflective of) its surroundings.

MUTEK x COVID-19 Statement

Wednesday, March 25, 2020. The plan had been to reveal our 21st edition’s first wave of artists today. Meanwhile, COVID-19 is front and centre, and we’ve decided to delay the first round of announcements by a few weeks, by which time we hope that some semblance of normalcy will have returned.

During this period of inevitable confinement, every member of the MUTEK team has continued to work—from home—with the unwavering intention of bringing you all a memorable 21st edition. As it stands, the festival will continue to run from August 25 to 30, 2020 and we hope that soon, as the effects of the pandemic wane, we’ll be able to gradually unveil the fruits of months of preparation.

In the meantime, our thoughts are chiefly with healthcare workers and with everyone who continues to provide essential services, but also with artists, technicians, agents, festivals, concert venues, independent labels and media, and with all cultural actors who’ve had to suspend their activities.

We encourage you to support your favourite artists by purchasing their music, either on online platforms or via independent record shops’ websites, and encouraging you to stay curious and continue to discover new musical and visual worlds. Together we can fashion a radiant summer!
