Scrap Stash Yard Sale

Well I know I have been MIA for a little while but I have been getting ready for the Scrap Stash Yard Sale. Over the past few weeks I have went through every inch of my craft room getting ready for this sale. There were some days I only had a small path to walk where I had everything out on the floor but I was determined to destash and organize my room a little more. I will be honest I could not get motivated to craft until I got it finished. It was hard putting a few of my items in the sale stack, but I thought to myself this or something new and usually something new won.

The Scrap Stash Yard Sale is this Saturday, June 15 from 10am to 2pm so if you are in the Nashville area there will be several of us selling our stash for very reasonable prices. Most of my items are priced from $0.25 to $5.00. I will be selling my Silhouette SD, Crop In Style XXL Tote, tons of embellishments, wood mounted stamps, card making items, and much much more. So if you are in the area come join the fun.

The sale is located at Concord Community Church of the Nazarene - 9826 Concord Road, Brentwood, TN 37027. I hope to see you there!

Bachelorette Party in a Box

Today I want to share with you a fun way to store memories of parties past. Last year during our Christmas in July blog hop Carol from The Answer is Chocolate shared a gift idea titled “Paris In A Box” and I fell in love with the idea. My best friend got married a few years ago and I still had all the party favors where I was planning to make a shadow box, but due to the nature of some of the favors and pictures I decided this was the best way for her to keep those memories all locked up so I created the Bachelorette Party in a Box.

I started with a wood box I purchased from Hobby Lobby. I used decorations from the party to decorate the box and used the invitations for the theme. This is the invitation I created using lace at the top for the “garter” and tulle as the fishnet stockings.

For the top of the box I used pink cardstock and a piece of lace overlay cardstock. To finish off the top I cut pieces from the feather picks that were part of the centerpiece that night and pink and black flowers I also purchased at Hobby Lobby.

For the sides of the box I used black and pink ribbon. I then added the black rhinestones to the front I purchased at Michael’s. The lace around the top of the box is the same lace I used for the invitations.

Now comes the fun part – the inside of the box.

I lined the inside edges with pink cardstock and zebra print ribbon for the bottom and clear rhinestones for the top. Then I lined the bottom and top of the box with zebra print paper. To finish the top I attached the invitation along with pieces from the black feather picks and pink feathers from her boa as layers under the flowers.

I wanted her to remember some of the fun and crazy events from that night so I created an acrylic album using the same pink, black, and zebra print from the party. I decided not to show the inside pages of the album to protect the innocent from the crazy fun we had that night.

Once I had the box and album finished I added some of the party favors and decorations in the box. Now she has a way to remember the last night of her single life without it being on display for everyone to see.

I created a similar box for my sister’s 50^th birthday bash that I will share with you later.

Happy Mother’s Day & Prom 2013

First let me start off by wishing all of you mothers a Happy Mother’s Day. I hope you had a wonderful day filled with those you love.

I have a new toy! I have been using my Silhouette SD and wanted the Silhouette Cameo for larger projects! I am now in love with my Cameo because I can cut more images and work with larger images for my projects.

Last night Brandon went to his first prom with his beautiful girlfriend Alexus, so I thought I would share a few of the photos. Aren’t they a cute couple? Everyone had a great time and made it home safely.

DIY - Necklace Hanger

What girl doesn’t love a necklace to match every outfit (or almost every outfit)? As my collection of necklaces has grown I had to find somewhere to hang them while being easy to access those mornings I’m flying through my closet to get ready for work. To remedy this problem I decided to create this necklace hanger using a cabinet door and drawer pulls.

This is how the project looked before.

I started by adding two coats of Martha Stewart Beetle Black. The stencil is also from the Martha Stewart collection using the Metallic Sterling paint. This is how it looked after completing these two steps.

It seemed to need something else and with the black paint I lost the pretty details of the cabinet door so I decided to add a line of the metallic paint around the edge to add more detail.

I purchased drawer pulls from Hobby Lobby to use as the hanger for my necklaces. When purchasing these make sure the back of the pull is not too long for the thickness of the wood you are using or it will not lay flat after you hang it. After looking at the plain black pulls I decided they needed a little more detail as well. I decided to add the metallic paint but immediately wiped the paint off so it would only remain in the details of the pull instead of them being completely metallic.

Once the paint has dried, determine where you want to place your drawer pulls and drill holes. Attach your desired hanging accessory to the back of the necklace hanger and there you have it a decorative and accessible way to hang all the necklaces you have made or purchased.

Magazine Feature!!

I have some very exciting news to share with you today. In January I was contacted by Debbie Harrison the Editor for New Zealand Gardener magazine. She contacted me to ask if she could feature my Terracotta Birdbath in a special DIY Projects edition of the magazine. After exchanging a few emails I sent her the pictures she requested.

After sending the pictures I waited to see if my project would make the Editor’s cut until I went to the mailbox and found this beauty in a nice envelope from New Zealand.

I immediately started thumbing through the magazine to see if I would find my birdbath…when I turned to Page 27 under the Furniture and Features section this is what I found!

As I started looking at all of the great projects in this magazine I found another surprise waiting on page 115 – does anything on this page look familiar? You guessed it to my amazement there was my Tipsy Stackable Planter that had also made the Editor’s cut.

Top Project Blogiversary Countdown

Hello everyone – I hope you had a wonderful Easter with your family and friends. I know this post is a day late now that it is April but I was spending time with my family as well.

It is finally time to reveal the top viewed project during my first year of blogging. Again, I want to thank everyone for following me on this journey, for commenting on my blog, overlooking my mishaps along the way but we can’t forget about the fun of learning new techniques.

When I started my blog I have to admit I wondered if anyone would care what I was making, if my crafts would inspire anyone, and how I was going to learn the techniques of blogging. I am still learning but that is half the fun (except those days I’m pulling my hair out trying to figure something out). I have to say it is so nice to see how supportive everyone in the bloggy and crafty world have been and I cannot wait to see what this next year will bring.

No. 2 Blogiversary Countdown

We are getting close to revealing the top viewed project during my first year of blogging. Any thoughts on what the top project might be? Before I can reveal the top project I first have to reveal the second most viewed project….

Out of the wreaths I have made I think this is my favorite. It was ~~a little~~ really messy to make with the burlap but I love the way it turned out. Have you seen all the fun burlap patterns that are now available? I try to pass by them but I know one day I’m going to give in to the temptation and have to make another burlap wreath. 50th Birthday Bash

Earlier this week I promised to post my sister’s surprise 50^th birthday bash. I will share some of the decorations I created along with how you can create some of them yourself. There are several ideas to share so I’ll go ahead and get started.

Artist Table

First up is one of my favorite ideas for her party. If you have read my “About Me” you know my sister is an artist so I wanted to make sure I captured this part of her life at the party. This is the “Artist Table” I created and she loved it.

My Mom created the 50 using pictures of my sister through the years. She started by creating a template from poster board then attaching the pictures. Everyone enjoyed reminiscing as they looked at the pictures. This was inspired from a pin I found on Pinterest that was originally pinned from Martha Stewart.

The garland on the wall was created by alternating red, white, & black cardstock with red & white bakers twine. I cut the garland on my Silhouette using #26234“scalloped globe garland”. Here is a close-up of the garland and if I was to make it again I would make the circles smaller than the default size.

Now let’s take a closer look at the table.

I purchased small glass containers from the dollar store for the M&Ms that we divided by color. I thought it would be fun to add labels with a description of the color that related to her life such as Kentucky Blue since she is a Kentucky fan, Lady Bug Red because my grandmother always called her lady bug, and poodnoobie green because that is the nickname by boys gave her. To create the labels I used a scalloped circle from Silhouette and tried out the print & cut feature for the first time to print the color descriptions.

The painter’s pallet was created by using white Styrofoam board that I purchased at the dollar store. We cut holes to add the M&Ms cups for the pods of color then I randomly painted the same colors to make it look more like a painter’s pallet.

I found several ideas on Pinterest that said “turning 50 blows or sucks” but I didn’t feel that went with our party theme so I created my own word and made this cute “50 and FaBLOWus” sign to go with the Blow Pops.

The last item on the table is the canvas I created. I started by painting the entire canvas black. Then I used Tim Holtz plain mask sheets and my Silhouette to create the template for my wording and designs I added in white. When using the masks you want to use the negative of the design you created and for the letters I had to hold the center pieces for letters such as the “a” and “p”. Creating this canvas was a little tricky and I had to try several different techniques but I think it turned out really good.

For a little extra detail on the table I added tubes of paint and paint brushes.

Dance Floor Pom Poms

My mom and I spent hours creating pom poms to be the centerpiece of the dance floor. We used mostly black and white but included a few red ones to add color. Because I had to make so many I tried cutting them in many different ways and they all turned out cute, so if you decide to make them I would encourage you to get creative and not use the same design you find on the internet. One of my favorites I created using pinking shears and cutting them into small points.

This banner was created using my Silhouette and I hung it in the area where the dance floor was located.

Table Decor

We rented black linens for all the tables. For the buffet tables I used different size pots under the linens to add some height and depth to the table. I also added a fresh bouquet of red roses with baby’s breath. I also used glass cylinders with white floating candles and added baby’s breath to the water which was an idea I also found on Pinterest.

For the dining tables we also used black linens along with fishbowl candle holders decorated with black and red ribbon. I also created tri-folds that had the year my sister was born, fun facts about that year, and important events.

If you want your guest of honor to feel special create a chair that is just for them but instead of paying for chair covers use a small round table linen. I created her chair cover by draping the chair with the red linen, gathering the fabric to the back of the chair and carefully pinning the fabric with safety pins. To cover the pins I added a bow I made from black & white ribbon.

Cake Table

Last but certainly not least is the cake table. This cake was designed by Publix using a picture of this cake I found on Pinterest. Instead of using strawberries I asked them to create roses. If you are decorating for a party and want the cake to match I highly recommend taking something to the bakery so they can use the exact colors. I took a piece of cardstock I used for the banner and garland which allowed them to easily match the correct color of red. The cake was beautiful and very tasty as well.

A Soldier’s Sendoff & Birthdays

This has been a busy couple of months for our family from a surprise birthday bash for my sister, my granddaughter turning 1, my grandson turning 4, and today we sent my son off for basic training. Today I thought I would share a few of the projects I created for these events and later this week I will share the details of my sister’s birthday bash.

I am so proud of the decision my son has made to serve our country but can I tell you that along with being proud comes the heartbreak of him being away from home. The longest I’ve ever been away from my kids is seven days and I have always been able to pick up the phone to just say “hi” whenever I wanted. I will continue to pray for him every day and countdown until he returns home. My heart really goes out to those who have loved ones deployed who are away from their families for even longer periods of time.

I used this “Good Luck” banner on Sunday when I had everyone over for dinner to spend some time together before he left. This was created by using design #16802 on my Silhouette with the Americana Cardstock by Canvas Corp and white cardstock for the letters. I then outlined the letters using my red Stickles to add a little sparkle.

For my centerpiece I used a vase I had on hand, red fabric and created the flags using design #29392 on my Silhouette. Once the flags were made I used the same red cardstock to make loops for the bamboo sticks.

As I mentioned earlier we have recently celebrated Brooklyn’s first birthday along with Ty’s 4^th birthday. Here are the birthday cards I created for each of them.

Ty is really into trains so I found this cute little train car in the Silhouette gallery (design #9590). I wanted to personalize it a little so I added the “engine number” which was 4 and also used my Silhouette to create “Ty’s Express”.

Here is a picture of both of them on their special day – aren’t they cuties!

Monogram Plate

Welcome to March everyone – I don’t know about you but I am ready for spring. I just finished planning a surprise birthday bash for my sister I will share with you a little later but I promised in my post for my decorative plate that I had another plate design I wanted to share with you so here we go.

Like the other plate you will first start by cleaning the plate and ensuring it is completely dry.

Second is selecting the design for your plate. With the first plate having our last name I decided to do a monogram and used Silhouette design #26969 Wrought Iron Frame by Jennifer Wambach. I measured the inside of the plate to determine the size of the design which is 7.5” by 7.5”. Once I had the size of my design I selected the font for my monogram which is DaunPenh. I used brown vinyl for this plate as well.

Once all the designs were cut I used the transfer tape to position the designs and my scrapper to ensure all of the bubbles were removed. Remove the transfer tape and voila!

But wait my plate seems to be missing something. There was still too much white showing on the plate so I created a slim rectangle that was the length of my plate to go around each edge. I think it looks better with this little extra detail. Here is a picture of one of the edges and you can see the difference between the two above pictures (sorry the pictures are a little dark but I kept getting a bad glare off the white plate).

One Year Blogiversary!!

Last March I started a new endeavor in my life – MyCreativiT! It is hard to believe I have been blogging for one year but it has been full of excitement interacting with amazingly creative followers, meeting new people and making friends.

During this past year there have been project disasters and hits along the way. I have learned several new crafty techniques and while I’ve learned a lot about blogging I know I still have more to learn so if you have any thoughts or suggestions please feel free to share them.

I thought to celebrate my first year I would count down the top five projects each week along with sharing some new projects as well. Drum roll please…..

Oddly enough this was the first project I posted back on March 8 and we just celebrated Brooklyn’s first birthday. Here is a link to the original post along with a few pictures.

Decorative Family Plate

Hello everyone – I hope you are having a good week. Today I want to share a simple project with you as I have a rather large project going on at the moment.

For this project I used a $0.99 plate I found at Goodwill that matches the color of my kitchen perfectly, brown vinyl, transfer tape, and my Silhouette.

First start by cleaning the plate and ensuring it is completely dry.

Second is the fun part of selecting the designs you want to use to decorate your plate. For this plate I used the Silhouette Scroll Tree ID#6981 and one of the scrolls from ID#13648 Flourish both are by Hero Arts. This scroll might look familiar as it is the same one I used for my Monogram Coasters. The font for the letters is Lucida Calligraphy and I selected a font size that would fit along the edge of the plate.

Once all the designs have been sized to fit and cut I used the transfer tape to position the designs and used my scrapper to ensure all of the bubbles were removed. Remove the transfer tape and voila!

I have one other decorative plate I will share with you next time.

Monogram Magnets

In my last post I shared with you the Monogram Coasters I gave as gifts for Christmas so today I will share with you the second part of the gift everyone received – Monogrammed Magnets. I found the inspiration for this gift on Pinterest created by Little Miss Momma, but wanted to personalize my magnets which also added a few extra steps.

For this project you will need:

Scrapbook paper

Mod Podge – I used Matte Finish

Vinyl

Magnet strip (not pictured)

Beacons 3-in-1 glue (not pictured)

Clear glass beads – from Hobby Lobby

I started by cutting several circles that are a little larger than an inch. Next apply Mod Podge to the bottom of the glass bead and center the paper on the bead making sure to remove any bubbles.

Using my Silhouette I cut vinyl letters that are approximately one inch (or 87.9pt) using the Harrington font.

To finish attach a piece of the magnet strip to the back of the glass bead. While the magnet strip will have an adhesive back I recommend using Beacons 3-in-1 glue to ensure the magnet is secure.

There you have it - a quick and inexpensive personalized gift idea.

Monogram Coasters

One of the crafty gifts I gave this year for Christmas was monogrammed coasters. They were fairly inexpensive to make as I purchased a box of 100 white tiles from Home Depot and depending on how many you are making this can be a quick project. Due to the number of sets I was giving as gifts and each set containing four coasters it took me a little longer to finish them.

First I selected the font I wanted to use – which is Goudy Old Style and the font size is 266. I cut several different flourish designs to determine the one I wanted to use and decided to go with Design 13648 Flourish by Hero Arts. Then I put my poor Silhouette to work cutting all of the vinyl pieces for the coasters.

While my Silhouette was fast at work I cut the pads and adhered the felt pads to the bottom of each coaster. I found using adhesive backed black felt was the quickest and cheapest product to use.

Once some of the vinyl was cut I started prepping my designs and adding transfer paper. Then it was time to start adding the designs to the each coaster and finish them off with glossy Mod Podge. This is what my desk looked like while some of the coasters were drying.

After I finished all the coasters I tied each set with black ribbon.

With my daughter being an Alabama fan I decided to make a different coaster for her since I found this really cute houndstooth paper. I cut the paper a little smaller than the coaster and used red vinyl for her monogram – she loved them me on the other hand would have preferred them to be a different color. J

Gourd Snowman Family

Well we finally received our first “significant” snow here in middle Tennessee. Now those of you who live in snow prone areas do not laugh that I’m calling this small amount of snow “significant”. J Since we’ve had a little snow on the ground I thought it would be a great time to share with you my gourd snowman family. But first here are a couple of pictures of the pretty snow.

I previously purchased gourds at our county fair to make my bird feeder and birdhouse so this year when I was perusing the gourd booth these little guys caught my attention. I thought they would make a perfect snowman family – this is how they looked before.

I used three coats of Martha Stewart Wedding Cake to make sure they were well covered. Once they were completely dry I used some black paint to add their eyes, mouth, and buttons then added my carrot nose using orange paint. I found some really cute snowflake ribbon at Wal-Mart to use for the scarf and that is it. This was a simple project and now I have our snowman family to add to my winter collection.

Recipe for Love

This year my husband and I will celebrate our 15 year wedding anniversary. After 15 years when it comes to going out we usually go through the same process of “I don’t care what do you want to do?” and usually do the same thing we always do, so I decided to create a Valentine gift for my husband we can use all year and I’m calling it “Recipe for Love”.

This little jar is filled with 2” hearts in four different colors that represent different activities for us to do at least once a month. I really had to sit down and think about what to put on the hearts that would be activities we would both enjoy doing (a little give and take) along with activities we would normally not do to spice things up. I thought I would share some of my ideas with you to help kick off activities you can include – I included activities we could do at no cost along with some that would take a little planning.

Bright Pink Hearts – Outdoor Adventures: Taking a hike, picnic in the park, play in the rain (no lightening of course), share our passion – volunteer at the animal shelter, etc.

White Hearts – Night on the Town: Road Trip – drive, check out the sights, and stay overnight wherever we stop, drive in movie, tour a winery, etc.

Light Pink Hearts – Getting Cozy: Both share top 10 memories, snuggle and watch a movie, candlelight dinner at home, go for a couples massage, etc.

Red Hearts – For Your Eyes Only: I will let you come up with your own ideas

To decorate our Recipe for Love jar I used red vinyl to cut the Outline Heart Border (#37145) on my Silhouette. The hearts will not lay flat around the jar so I did cut some of my hearts at the point to remove the bubbles.

I used heart ribbon I had from a previous project to go around the edge of the lid. To cover the lid I cut a circle just smaller than the lid using pink cardstock and then created two medallions to layer on the top. For the center of the medallion I cut a small circle from white cardstock, used a flourish embossing folder for texture, and then applied pink ink.

I cannot wait for all the fun we will have as we pull a heart out of the jar throughout the year. Do you have any fun activities you would like to share?

Fun Scarf – No Needles Required

Maybe crocheting is not one of your hobbies but you still want a quick and easy scarf with NO needles required. Red Heart has a yarn in their Boutique line called Swerve that comes in several different fun colors. The best part is you only need two hands to make a scarf using this yarn.

Depending on how you start your yarn determines if it will be long or average length.

You can find a video here showing you how to make these scarves using only your hands (you might want to fast forward the video to about 4 minutes to skip them talking about the event they were attending).

The blue/green scarf was made by not doubling the yarn together before making the scarf. This gives you more yarn allowing your scarf to be longer. The longer scarf gives you a little more flexibility in how you can wear it as well.

This is a quick and easy project and the best part you do not have to use crochet or knitting needles to make them. I was able to make both of my scarves in about 5 minutes after watching the video.

Crochet – Long Cowl & Hat

Earlier this week I shared with you the scarf I made using the crocodile stitch. Today I want to share another crochet project where I attempted to make my first crocheted hat. I have looked online and have not been able to find the patterns to share with you but I did purchase the book at Wal-Mart. The book is by Leisure Arts, Inc. and is titled “Hats & Scarves – 12 Designs to Crochet” by Melissa Leapman. There are several cute patterns in this book.

I was able to make the long cowl in one evening as it only consists of double crochets and slip stitches after chaining 155.

Making a hat was a new challenge for me trying to work around each row and then decreasing. When I finished my hat it was obvious that my decreasing was incorrect because the hat was too big for me so I decided to change the pattern up a little. I continued decreasing using rows of single crochets and then to add a little design I double crocheted in every other single crochet for one row. I then finished it off (until it fit the way I wanted it) with more rows of single crochet. This made the hat bigger than the pattern which is okay with me because it went from a fitted hat to a slouch hat.

I have learned in my short time of crocheting that it is okay to bend the rules (or patterns in this case) because sometimes you end up with a project you like even better. The yarn I used for the cowl and hat is Homespun in Deepest Gray by Lion Brand Yarn.

Next time I will share an easy scarf where needles are not required.

Crocodile Stitch Scarf

“…Baby it’s cold outside…” I don’t know what the weather is like where you are but here we are experiencing 30 degree rain that started yesterday. If you are somewhere tropical then I’m headed your way and if you are under a foot of snow this project will help keep you warm.

When the temperature starts to drop I always enjoy breaking out the yarn to crochet and this year I wanted to learn some new techniques. The first scarf I am going to share is made using the crocodile stitch. I love the design and it’s not one you see many people wearing (I like to be different).

I will not try to teach you how to do the crocodile stitch but I will share with you the best video I found to follow. It took me a few times of taking the first couple of rows apart and rewinding the video several times but once you get started the rest goes together fairly easy. To make my scarf I used two skeins of Red Heart Boutique in Midnight. The pattern for the scarf I made can be found here (you will need to scroll down toward the bottom). I did add tassels to my scarf from the yarn I had left over so remember to leave enough yarn if you want to add them to your scarf as well.

Scrolling by My Dad

If you have read “About Me” you know I have bragged on my Dad’s ability to do delicate scroll work. Every year he gets creative in making Christmas decorations and ornaments so I thought I would share what he made me this year (along with a few of his other projects – see below).

The natural wood is beautiful but I wanted to add some color and sparkle so I decided to get the paint and glitter out. This is not one of his most intricate pieces but I can tell you he has to have a lot more patience than me because I learned how detailed this piece is when I started trying to paint.

The letters have two coats of Martha Stewart Blue Sky paint. I then painted the snowflakes with Martha Stewart Wedding Cake and sprinkled white glitter while the paint was still wet.

I think it turned out really cute and goes well with my snowmen collection.

I wanted to brag on my Dad a little so give him some love and leave a comment (I know he will be reading this) and tell him what you think about his artwork (not my painting)! J

DIY - Glitter Christmas Tree

I have a couple more Christmas projects I want to share with you before moving on for the year. This project is quick and easy.

I found this cute candy jar at Wal-Mart before Christmas and knew it just needed a little glitter.

I followed the same steps for making my glitter ornaments but the tree took a considerable amount of glitter.

Once I allowed time for the inside to dry I started working on decorating the outside. I knew I would need to cover the section where the jar fit together so I used several layers of Martha Stewart red glitter eyelash yarn to make the garland. I tied the strands together in the back and tucked in the ends.

I didn’t want the “ornaments” to be flat so I used 3D Zots by applying glitter and then simply sticking them to tree.

It was an easy project and added some sparkle to my Christmas tree collection.

Christmas Centerpiece

As I am still playing catch-up on my posts from the holidays I wanted to share with you the centerpiece I made this year.

First we will start with the “snow” covered cylinders. I started by mixing Epson salt and Martha Stewart Carrara Marble (white) glitter in a sandwich bag to give it a little more sparkle and then I heavily coated the bottom of the cylinders with Mod Podge. I found that if I rolled the cylinder in the salt/glitter mix it would pick up the course salt and not the glitter using my hand and letting the mix fall into the Mod Podge worked better so I didn’t end up with only the Epson salt.

I found a wonderful idea on Pinterest to create the effect of ice in water. After my Mod Podge was dry I added plastic wrap and a few red berries from a floral pick I cut apart to make it look like the water was actually ice. When doing this you will have to work with the plastic wrap as it all wants to float to the top so I continued to separate it and add more when needed. I also wrapped the berries in the plastic wrap to keep them from floating to the top. The “snow” around the bottom helps to hide that the plastic wrap doesn’t stay on the bottom.

***Warning – do NOT put plastic berries in water for two reasons. 1) the next morning my water had a pink tint and 2) when I decided to remove the berries from the plastic wrap a couple of days later they had a horrible toxic smell so I would either skip this part or use real berries.

To create the centerpiece I used a few pine floral picks and arranged them so you could not see the stems then added the cylinders and a few different size candle holders with tea-lights and added floating candles in the cylinders.
