What Will Be the Hottest, Hippest, and Cutest 2010 Wedding Trends?

When predicting 2010 Wedding Trends, it seems almost too obvious to talk about the economy's impact. But before you jump to conclusions about how drab and cheap weddings are becoming, know that money is certainly not the only influence on style, fashion, or tradition. In fact, couples are getting more creative and feel more freedom to make unique choices.

Here's what I think will be hot next year:

Backyard Weddings at Home

While getting married at home isn't necessarily cheaper, it feels more personal, allows you to have a more intimate affair, and doesn't feel ostentatious. The economy means not only that people want to spend less money, but also that they feel guilty when they do spend money. A backyard event not only helps to put your guests at ease, but also allows you to make more casual, less expensive choices elsewhere. For example, a barbeque picnic feels more appropriate at home than it would at a country club.

Homemade Wedding Favors

Though favors are an expense that's easy to eliminate, right now couples are especially grateful to guests who have incurred considerable expense to be a part of the celebration. The 2010 wedding trend is using homemade favors to express that thanks, and to send guests home with your love.

Birdcage Veils
These vintage-look veils combine a jeweled clip or feathered headpiece with netting that only covers the face. In the picture above, Drew Barrymore is wearing a birdcage veil to a recent movie premiere. Wearing one allows you to have some dramatic glamor and feel like a bride, but is a more fun look and less hassling than a long traditional veil.

Mismatched Bridesmaid Dresses
For several years, brides have been selecting a bridesmaid dress designer and a fabric, then letting their bridesmaids choose the style that works best for their bodies. But the 2010 wedding trend takes idea further. Choose only a color, then let your bridesmaids find an off-the-rack dress of any designer that they like. Not only does this take some pressure off of you, but it also ensures that women are choosing a dress they like and they'll be likely to actually wear again. If you follow this trend, be sure to tell your bridesmaids how formal the dress should be – you don't want one bridesmaid wearing a casual sundress while another has on a beaded evening gown.

The End of the Standard Year-Long Engagement
Though a year is a good amount of time for an engagment (and thus that's what I use for my wedding planning checklist) it certainly isn't obligatory. Some couples will be planning quick elopements, while others will opt for longer engagements. There are advantages to both – a quick engagement means that you don't overwhelm yourself with trying to plan the perfect wedding, and often means that you spend less money on unnecessary things. A long engagement can help relieve the stress, spreading out the tasks and the expenses. You'll have time to save money, and hopefully be able to feel more secure about your jobs before you sign unbreakable contracts.

Strapless Wedding Dresses
If you're saying to yourself, "This isn't a new 2010 wedding trend!" you're right. Strapless dresses have been extremely popular for several years now. And though more brides are opting for sleeves, straps, and other ways of covering the shoulders, strapless is going to continue to be the dominant style for the near future.

15 simple ways to save money on your honeymoon

No one wants to skimp on their honeymoon. Posh accommodations, intimate meals, and soothing massages rank high on the wish list of virtually every newlywed, but most people don't have an unlimited expense account. No need to take the backpack-and-hostel route -- just focus on these five areas to cut down your costs.
The Planning

A little legwork early in your engagement goes a long way toward balancing your budget.

1. Consider a travel agent
It's easy to find a flight and book a hotel over the Internet, so the idea of working with a travel agent might seem antiquated. While it's not for everyone, Tim Leffel, author of Make Your Travel Dollars Worth a Fortune, observes that a travel agent can save money for those who don't have a specific destination in mind. "If you just want to go to a nice Caribbean island and stay in a hotel on the beach, agents can often find deals that you might not run across yourself." So if your heart's set on the Four Seasons in Nevis, use the Web. If you're open to any number of islands and resorts, see what a travel agent has to offer.

2. Use frequent flier miles
If you've charged wedding expenses, your honeymoon is the perfect time to cash in all the bonus points you racked up on your credit card. Free airfare is great, of course, and even if you don't have enough miles for that, you can still go for an upgrade from coach to first class, allowing you to begin and end your honeymoon in style.

3. Start a honeymoon registry
As a traditional part of attending your wedding, guests will give you gifts, and the majority of them will shop straight from your wedding registry. If you have ample linens and china's just not your style, set up a honeymoon registry and have guests pay for part (or even all) of your trip in lieu of traditional gifts. Sites like thebigday.com or honeymoonwishes.com offer registries for a small percentage of the total gift. You can also register at resorts like Marriott or Disney.
The Destination

An open mind while picking a honeymoon spot gives you a better chance to find a good deal.

4. Take advantage of shoulder seasons
Every destination has a high and low season -- during the high season there are crowds and high prices, while the low season is cheaper (usually because the weather is lousy). Shoulder seasons, however, are right on the cusp of high and low, so the prices are more reasonable because there's far less demand and the weather is still appealing. Shoulder season for the Caribbean starts right after spring break. "Mid-April to mid-June is a fantastic time to hit the Caribbean," Leffel says. (Should you prefer Europe, look into the late spring and early fall.)

5. Go where the dollar hasn't deflated
The poor currency exchange can sabotage your budget. The dollar has become increasingly puny compared to the euro, so seek a destination where your money still has some worth. Leffel recommends heading anywhere in Spanish-speaking Latin America -- from Mexico down to Chile -- or check out our sidebar for the best budget honeymoons.

6. Consider an all-inclusive
One of the best reasons to honeymoon at an all-inclusive resort is that you have a clear estimate of how much your trip will cost and budget accordingly. Find out exactly what you're paying for and factor in a couple of meals at restaurants outside the resort, day trips, or other excursions that might not be included. Then you'll have a solid idea of how much you'll spend.
The Transportation

Getting from point A to point B can be the bulk of your bill, but there are easy ways to save.

7. Fly off-peak
Flights are less expensive on certain days of the week. If you're traveling domestic, fly on a Sunday to avoid business travelers. If you're going abroad, find a better deal by leaving on a Monday or Tuesday.

8. Ask if airport pickup is included
When you book a hotel, try to score a ride from the airport (some hotels offer complimentary transportation). If a taxi is your only option, hail a cab in an area of the airport designated for transportation rather than riding with some guy who sidles up at baggage claim and offers a lift.

9. Use mass transit
Unless you're renting a car, use mass transit as much as possible. Cab rides, while convenient, inevitably wreak havoc on your budget. Before you travel, familiarize yourself with your honeymoon spot's main modes of transportation, be it metro, tram, or bus. Saving money isn't the only benefit of mass transit -- in congested cities, the metro is very often the quickest way across town.
The Hotel

A dismal room can ruin a trip, but saving money doesn't have to mean staying in a dump.

10. Get a room with no view
Check any hotel's website and you'll find a range of room rates. A room's size and view are two factors that hike up the price. Cut your accommodation's cost by booking a room looking upon a slightly less attractive landscape. When you spend most of your time on the beach, you'll hardly notice whether your room has a view of the ocean or a garden, and the savings can be significant.

11. Investigate packages
If a hotel offers a "honeymoon package," Leffel advises taking a close look to see if it's really a money-saving deal. If the offer is six nights for the price of five, that's worthwhile. If the package brings an evening rose petal turndown service plus champagne for an added $200, it's cheaper to forgo the extras and book at the normal room rate.

12. Mention you're newlyweds
You can often leverage the fact you're on your honeymoon for special (and free) treatment. While there are no hard rules for the practice -- or guarantees the hotel will do anything -- it's worth telling the receptionist you'll be spending your first days of married life with them. We've heard of couples getting complimentary room upgrades. It's also worth dropping the h-word when you're at airport check-in, and any bartender's bound to offer a round on the house.
The Food

An extraordinary honeymoon requires great food and drink, but the costs of eating out add up. Learn how to maximize your meal money.

13. Stray from the hotel
A hotel's restaurant is definitely hassle-free dining, but that convenience often comes with a marked-up price. Consult a guide book for some other options.

14. Talk to locals
With some insider info, you'll find an unassuming fish stand in a Caribbean market or a hole-in-the-wall bistro on a European side street that serves the best meal of your entire trip. Ask the local baker, butcher, or fishmonger for their pick for the best bite in town -- chances are that it will be reasonably priced and utterly delicious.

15. Prepare a few meals
Making your own lunch doesn't have to lack romance. Go to the grocery store and stock up on sandwich ingredients, fruit, and other picnic goods. Trek to a secluded spot and enjoy a private lunch. You'll save money without missing out on the fond memories every honeymooner deserves.

Just about every Caribbean island offers the natural lure of sun-filled days on white-sand beaches gently lapped by an azure sea. But for travellers in search of a rich cultural experience in a setting of extraordinary beauty, Jamaica presents a fascinating diversity of options.

Much of Jamaica's land rises more than 1,000 feet above sea level. The celebrated Blue Mountains, famed for their fine coffee, are actually made up of two ranges, the Central Range, in the northern section, and the Port Royal Mountains that rise above the Liguanea Plain, just north of Kingston. Why Roses?

Roses are-plain and simple-the quintessential wedding flower. A universal symbol of love and beauty, they are at once classic and contemporary, omnipresent yet never overdone, ever current yet steeped in history. There were 20,000 cream-color roses at the wedding of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas. More recently, brides are finding Carmen Electra's luscious deep red rose bouquet to die for. Why? Roses are synonymous with romance. More elegant than daisies, less pretentious than French tulips, and more affordable than orchids...

Roses are Symbolic...

Open any romance novel, look at any romantic painting, and it's clear that throughout the ages writers, poets, artists, and others have used the rose as a metaphor for undying love, beauty, and passion. But why? It has been cited that Chloris -- the Greek Goddess of Flowers -- created the rose out of a lifeless nymph. In the creation, Chloris called upon Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, to bless the nymph with beauty; Dionysus, the God of Wine, to give her a sweet scent; and the three Graces to bestow charm, brightness, and joy upon her. Then Zephyr, the West Wind, blew away clouds so that Apollo, the Sun God, could make the flower bloom. Voila! A rose and symbol of beauty was born.

It was the Victorians, however, who turned flowers into poetry, giving them symbolism and meaning. Inspired by a French book entitled Le Langage des Fleurs by Charlotte de la Tour, those genteel Victorians adopted this flower code to convey their sentiments. Soon every young woman relished in knowing that receiving a rose -- a symbol for true love -- was of the highest significance.

Roses are Reasonable...

According to the Society of American Florists, there are at least 120 varieties of roses commercially available. Styles can range from small blooms with sturdy leaves to larger flowers with soft, delicate petals. But the real beauty? Roses are widely available and can be reasonably priced (though rare varieties can skyrocket from $4 to $10 per stem).

What affects the cost? The grades of the stem and the head; in which part of the world the rose is cultivated; and the service that's provided with the flower. (Be honest: Is the level of preservation, handling, and care the same with your neighborhood street vendor as it is with a high-end retail florist?) But generally speaking, prices can stoop to as low as $1.50 a stem because of the huge variance in kind, quality, and color of roses.

Roses are Varied...

There are three main types of roses that are the most likely candidates for wedding flowers: hybrid tea roses, spray roses, and garden roses. Here's a quick glance at what makes each unique:

Hybrid Tea Roses: With its classic shape, the hybrid tea rose is, in fact, valued for its uniformity, durability (it will last the whole day without wilting!), and availability. The most popular kinds include the deep red roses known as Black Magic, the creamy white ones known as Vendela, and the gold-tone roses known as Leonidas.

Spray Roses: These smaller roses include five to 10 small heads per stem and therefore fill out bouquets more than a single stem -- making them a great value. They are available in single hues or bicolor, like the hybrid. Because of the variance in size, they are ideal for giving texture and visual interest to an arrangement.

Garden Roses: These roses are far larger and more lush than the other varieties. They are often very open, and they're more natural and freeform -- like something you'd find in your own garden (hence the name). Because of the fragility, they are rarer, precious, and costly.

Roses are Versatile...

Roses can go from minimal to mod -- it's all in the arrangement. Here are seven spectacular ways to use roses in your wedding-day decor.
Clean & Classic

Pair white roses with a classic flower like a gardenia or white hydrangea. Or fill a classic silver bowl with 200 of the same variety and color for a clean look with megaimpact.

Take a classic white arrangement and throw in something unexpected. Add a shocking black or dark brown floral element, such as an olive or fern shoot, to create dynamic contrast.

Romantic & Ornate

Make a visual statement: Try fur-trimmed or beaded wraps for the bouquets, or jewel-tone (ruby or citrine) tear-shape beads dangling from rose-filled candelabra.

Think feminine but modern -- and incorporate sweet elements, like satin ribbon looped into an arrangement of big open garden roses.

Want something both romantic and eccentric? Suspend a wreath of garden roses from the ceiling over each table.

Mod & Contemporary

Monochromatic arrangements are on the rise-whether that's all white, or shades of pale peach and hot orange. Chinese weddings are steeped in tradition. While many of these customs are no longer followed today, there are still a few that have survived the centuries and are a part of modern weddings. There is a Chinese saying, "It is natural to get married when you grow up." And so, marriage is very important to the Chinese culture.

The Husband's Family

In America and many other countries, the bride's family handles the expense of the wedding. In addition, it is traditionally thought of as the bride's "day." For the Chinese however, it's the groom's day. The family of the groom might handle the festivities and when the Happy Couple marries, the bride becomes a part of the groom's family. Years ago, the bride might expect never to see her family again. Before the wedding the bride would go into seclusion for a few days with her friends in order to day good bye. Of course, in this day and age, most couples take care of the wedding expenses themselves and the bride isn't expect to favor one side of the family over another.

Choosing the Date

For the Chinese couple, choosing a date is not as simple as saying, "hey I'm free that weekend, why don't we do it then?" Everything has to be in their favor. The day has to be a lucky one. The numbers of the month and days have to be lucky and the moon and stars have to be properly aligned. Most Chinese families choose their wedding date according to the lunar calendar.

Chinese Wedding Traditions - The Colors

The color red plays a vital role in the wedding festivities of the Chinese people. Red is considered by then as a bold and lucky color.

In addition to this, the color signifies love, prosperity and happiness; therefore, everything is in red - wedding invitations, gift envelopes and the bride's wedding dress. It is also important that the symbol for double happiness is placed on Chinese invitations, envelopes and wedding decorations, and accessories.

A new bed for the couple

In traditional Chinese families, the parents of the couple usually provide a new bed complete with pillow cases, comforters, pillows and sheets.

A night before the wedding, the groom is required to sleep on the bed and a young nephew will have to jump up and down the bed to give luck to the couple. It is said that this practice gives hope on the fertility of the couple and will make them produce an heir soon.

The Big Day

On the day of the wedding, the couple will need to serve tea to both parents and family and guests.

In return, they will be presented with jewelry and money placed in red envelopes.

There will be three different dresses for the bride for Chinese wedding traditions. The white dress with veil is worn during the wedding ceremony. The second wedding dress, a traditional Chinese wedding dress is used at the banquet.

The last dress is called the bride's going away dress. This dress is worn before the bride leaves the banquet.

The feast or wedding banquet is an important part during the wedding. Wedding banquets are to thank family and friends for the kindness they have shown throughout the years. Most feasts will serve a twelve course meal including delicacies like roasted pig and shark fin soup. Sometimes fried rice and abalone will also be served

A post wedding ritual for Chinese wedding traditions happens after the day of the wedding. The bride should wake up early to honor her ancestors.

Interfaith Weddings: 8 Planning Tips

Planning an interfaith ceremony can be tricky. You'll likely face three major challenges: finding an officiant; combining two sets of traditions without upsetting your families too much; and creating a ceremony that reflects your commitment and your common values. If you have two different religions, these issues can take on the complexity of an international summit. How can you prevent a religious roadblock?

1. Have a Long Engagement

Take an entire year (or longer) to identify and work on reconciling issues likely to arise during your marriage. The issue of religion -- its role in your wedding, marriage, and future family -- should be examined very closely. Discuss the religious practices you would like to continue observing, especially when you have children. Nothing need be set in stone, but it's important to be open about your expectations for the future.

2. Gather Information
Take courses in each other's religions. Even if you don't intend to practice either religion at home, the study will give you a greater understanding of each other's beliefs and assumptions.

3. Go for Counseling
Consult clergy from each of your religions, preferably someone with training in family counseling, to help you two discuss the issues you face. You could also contact a family planning organization or therapist for objective pre-wedding counseling.

4. Be Patient With Parents
If the folks are having a hard time dealing with the religious differences, try to understand that they are mourning for their own unfulfilled expectations.
Give them time to adjust to the idea, and try not to get defensive.

5. Visit Each Other's Family
Visit early, visit often. Interfaith marriage necessitates a partial "moving in" to another faith or culture. Spending time with each other's parents can be a good introductory course in what to expect.

6. Find the Right Officiant(s)
Choose an officiant (or two) who makes both of you feel comfortable and who believes in your union. Ask around -- chances are that other interfaith couples in your area have already searched for (and found) local officiants willing to perform interfaith marriages.

7. Include Both Faiths -- And Both Families
Early in the process, listen to both families' views and expectations for your wedding day. You and your sweetie should then decide how to proceed -- and lovingly (or at least nicely) discuss your choices with your families. Be open and honest with everyone from the start, so they know what you're planning and why. Many couples create a wedding program that includes explanations and transliterations of specific religious customs, so family and friends can understand and participate in unfamiliar traditions.

8. Personalize Your Ceremony
Take great care in planning the ceremony. Some interfaith couples choose to follow tradition closely, while others stray from convention. Your officiant(s) can help you design a ceremony that works for you. Work together to select readings and rituals that are significant to both of you. This tough-but-worthwhile process will do much more than solidify wedding-day plans -- you'll get a head start learning to compromise, the golden rule of marriage.

Paige and Marc, who wed on a ranch, chose a lemon theme to ensure a cheery celebration. Just before the ceremony, the couple served lemonade in big glass jars to quench guests' thirst under the hot summer sun.

2. Unity Sand
At their destination beach wedding, Lisa and Mike, who both spent many summers under the boardwalk, extinguished the unity candle idea and instead chose to combine symbolic cups of sand from their respective hometowns.

Take the toast up a notch with a champagne cocktail. At Elaine and Kevin's wedding, guests were given glasses of bubbly garnished with strawberries as they entered the ceremony space.

11. Exceptional Pets
Who says weddings aren't for the dogs? Animal lovers Clayton and Andrew asked the bride's mom to escort two four-legged friends, outfitted with flowers, down the aisle.

12. Homemade Huppah
From the handcrafted woodworking of Meet the Parents fame to treasured heirloom quilts, our brides get pretty crafty with the traditional Jewish huppah. Our favorite sentimental touch? Joanna and Scott sewed together old handkerchiefs from all eight of their grandparents to create their wedding canopy.

13. Baker's Duo
Andrea and John gave rise to a new tradition: Several days before their Catholic ceremony, the couple got busy in the kitchen and baked the communion bread themselves.

Probably in the top three when it comes to rooms in Las Vegas, they are everything you would expect for top dollar. The very best restaurants on the strip can be found at Bellagio including Le Cirque, Fix, Jasmine and my favorite Olives. The restaurants at Bellagio have no comparison elsewhere on the strip. The pool area is huge and noticeably absent are the large group of teenagers that you see at other resorts.

The cost, everything at Bellagio comes at a price, room rates are high and restaurants are extremely expensive. I hate to admit that it’s worth it, but it might be. The resort as a whole might come off as a bit pretentious and that is possibly because they aim to please those with a lot more money.

What should you look for in your reception site, aside from that sense of rightness you know you'll have the moment you see the perfect spot? Shopping for a site is a lot like finding a mate, a test you've obviously aced. You should be looking for the same sorts of things -- charm, personality, depth, more than just a pretty face (although looks do count!). Take along this list of what to look for -- in your head or on paper -- when you're ready to go scouting.

Roomy Fit
First, make sure the room is large enough to accommodate the number of people on your guest list. The space may look enormous when it's empty, but wedding essentials -- tables, chairs, a buffet, a bar, the band or DJ setup, the dance floor -- can take up a lot of space. Not to mention your guests, who'll need some elbow room. Even if you choose an outdoor site, you'll need ample room on the lawn, in the arboretum, or poolside. The best way to assess the size of a site? Ask to check out the place when another wedding is being set up. Of course, if you decide you must have your wedding at your favorite bar (the one with one bathroom, two booths, and three feet of floor space), you can always work backward and tailor your guest list to match.

Eating, Drinking & Partying Areas
There should be logical places within the space where guests can eat, drink, talk, and dance. See if you can envision where each activity would happen (especially if your ceremony will be there, too). If a room is too small to separate into sections accordingly, you may feel cramped. If it's shaped like an S or some other oddball figure, that could compromise your party's flow, as well. Also, note the locations of columns or other obstructions in the room -- will they block people's views?

Privacy, Please!
Privacy varies widely from place to place, as does the importance couples place on it. If you're having a daytime event in a public spot, such as a park or botanical garden, be prepared for strangers to trek past your party. They may even smile, wave, and come by to offer their good wishes. If this is okay with you (the more the merrier!), go for the park. If not, opt for a lovely lawn on a private estate. Or hold the reception at a restaurant or gallery that will post a CLOSED FOR PRIVATE PARTY sign. Be sure to inquire about available security at your site to keep gate-crashers at bay.

In addition, don't think that just because you're indoors, you're safe from uninvited guests. Banquet halls and hotels often hold more than one affair at a time. If there'll be other events going on simultaneously in rooms close to yours, you may hear karaoke-loving guests singing their hearts out to the sounds of Madonna through the walls or meet them over the hot-air dryers in the bathroom. If this bothers you, try to schedule your wedding when there won't be another one next door. If this is impossible, visit the site on a dual-party night and see how the sound carries and whether there really are any major people problems -- before you make a decision.

The site doesn't have to be done in the exact colors as your planned decorations, but it shouldn't clash or conflict with your party's mood or theme.

Seeing the Light
Light can make -- or break -- the mood. If you're marrying during the day, make sure your hall has plenty of windows. Who wants to spend six hours in a dark room when the sun is shining? If it's an evening affair, make sure the room's not too dim -- or that the lighting can be controlled for the big entrance, dinner, and dancing. If you're marrying outdoors, say, at dusk, will you be able to set up candles if necessary?

Try to visit the site at the same time of day that you've chosen for your wedding. Even if the space looks swell by candlelight, you may be surprised by the sight of that 20-year-old carpet during the day. You'll also miss a chance to see how sunlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows completely transforms the room, if you check it out only in the evening.

A Great View
What will your guests look at (when they're not gazing at you or smiling for the videographer)? Whether it's your city skyline, a stunning vista of rolling mountains beyond the windows, or the crashing sea on the sand behind you, exceptional locations are always a feast for the eyes. If there's no view per se, look to a place's decor or architectural details: Picasso prints on the walls, fine Persian rugs on the floors, period furniture in the corners, or an amazing crystal chandelier as the room's centerpiece all give your reception site that something extra.

The Right Color
If you're considering a certain theme and color palette for your party -- say, a Victorian tea done in pink, green, and gold -- that brown shag carpet is really going to wreck the effect. The site doesn't have to be done in the exact colors as your planned decorations, but the walls, carpets, chairs, and curtains shouldn't clash or conflict with your party's mood or theme. If you want a spring wedding brunch, look for a space that's done in light (perhaps pastel) colors or florals; black walls and red leather booths just don't say "spring." But they'll look great if you're going medieval (or 1980s, for that matter). For classic elegance, consider a room done in neutrals or black and white.

Ample Outlets
Be sure to take a thorough cruise around the room to see if it has lots of places to plug things in -- especially if you're partying in a place that's not a regular spot for hosting weddings. Your main user of outlets will be the entertainment crew. Take note of where the outlets are; if their location will force your DJ to spin records in the bathroom, make sure she or he has plenty of extension cords.

Good Vibrations
If the place is too echoey, it could give some weird reverb to the band, not to mention make it difficult for guests to hear one another talking. A tile or wood floor, for example, will amplify sounds, while a thick carpet will tend to muffle them. Check out the room's sound quality during an event. And tailor your music to the acoustic conditions. A jazz combo will sound better at an intimate art gallery than a 14-piece orchestra would (not to mention the fact that it takes up less floor space).

A Place to Park
Make sure the site is near a good parking lot, garage, or big, empty (safe) street where it's legal to park. If parking is a problem, look for other ways to get everyone to the party. Can a shuttle bus or vans take guests from the ceremony to the reception? Inadequate parking isn't necessarily a deal breaker, but it may mean spending more time and money to figure out a viable vehicular alternative.

The 41-year old is to marry 32-year-old Dutch model Sharlely “Lilly” Kerssenberg. Becker is resident in Zug where he runs a sports management and marketing business. His charity foundation, based at the same address, will also hold a sporting event for kids in Zurich in July.

Boris has two biracial sons, Noah and Elias, with his first wife Barbara Feltus, whom he divorced in 2001. Feltus made out like a bandit with a $14.4 million alimony settlement, a luxury seaside condo and full custody of their two sons.

Former tennis star Boris Becker is to marry his Dutch girlfriend Lilly Kerssenberg in the luxury Swiss resort of St Moritz later this week. On June 12, the three-time Wimbledon champion is set to go to the altar for his second wedding.

“Sharlely”Lilly” take a bit of a risk when it comes to choosing her wedding day attire.
Lilly Kerssenberg tied the knot with beau Boris Becker today, she turned her back on a designer wedding gown and instead wore a chic white pants suit with jacket, vest top and trousers.

Her groom, wearing a similar ensemble - but in black pinstripe - admitted he was nervous before the pair said their vows at the Segantini Museum in St Moritz, Switzerland.

The 40-year-old tennis player's sons, Noah and Elias, were in attendance for the I do's, as were well-known figures such as the Prince Albert of Monaco.

But Becker and Kerssenberg - a Dutch model - had been involved in the past, and the tennis star explained on German television that he realized he was meant to be with his ex.

Becker seems more than willing to bring his private life into the public sphere these days. In fact, the groom proposed to his girlfriend on live TV as well, while their wedding day will be broadcast on commercial network RTL.

. Here's the homework you need to do (and the questions you should ask) to make your wedding words letter-perfect.

Prep Step A: Get clearance

Make sure your officiant will accept personalized vows. Catholic and Episcopal congregations, for instance, may require you to recite all or part of the traditional vows, though in most cases that's left to the officiant's discretion. Remember: Even the most accommodating officiant will want to review your words in advance.

Prep Step B: Make a plan

You need to tackle the logistics to make sure you and your fiance are both on the same page: Are you each going to write your own, or will you write them together? Will you show them to each other before the ceremony?

Women are better at relationships, right?

Not so fast.

Relationship experts and students of evolutionary biology argue that women are endowed with superior skills for managing dyad dynamics. But let's take a look at that proposal more carefully. Can men be masters of relationship skills?

Consider the following men, not well known in the world of relationship literature: Eric A. Cornell, Wolfgang Ketterle, Carl E. Wieman. Not familiar to you? Then perhaps you'll recognize the names Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, or author Sir V.S. Naipaul. These are all names of Nobel Prize winners of 2001--three in Physics, and one each in Peace and Literature. In fact, last year all the Nobel Prizes, including those in medicine, economics and chemistry, went to men. A lucky year for fellows? Hardly. In the past decade, the Nobel Foundation granted prizes to only four women.

Men can master skills in the sciences, literature and leadership. It doesn't end there. Men have demonstrated excellence in endeavors from architecture to culinary arts. Is it such a leap of logic, then, to believe they can master relationship skills as well? My experience as a marriage therapist, and research on SecretsofMarriedMen.com, tell me that men have a wonderful aptitude at making a union last. Having a man's brain--a man's problem solving talents--is an asset, not a liability, for committed relationships.

Why would men seek to gain credit for achievement in this in this arena? After all, it would be easier to cede marriage-maintenance skills over to women. I, for one, would love to come home at the end of a workday and find my wife, Susan, has put all the pieces into place to make our relationship go smoothly. But Susan may have different ideas! I work on making the marriage better because I adore my wife, and want to do everything possible to fulfill her dreams. But it's not easy.

Let's look at the statistics. Despite their marriage vows to endure better or worse, women more likely to react to marital unhappiness by leaving. Wives precipitate two-thirds to three-quarters of all divorces and separations. They are more likely to express discontent-- the female raises 80% of all household arguments. Women are also more likely to criticize their spouses.

It's understandable that women express discontent in the home, as women traditionally, and statistically, have rule of the roost. According to Steven Nock, author of Marriage in Men's Lives, women do the lion's share of housework and social planning. So they have the right to raise household concerns. But each complaint they lodge puts the ball in the husband's court. Instinctually men shun these complaints by stonewalling or becoming defensive. When a husband responds by avoiding his wife, the quality of the marriage declines. The unsuccessful husband assumes his wife is a relationship expert, and reacts in kind to her harsh lead, thereby further contributing to marital discontent.

Statistics suggest that men husbands can counter their wives' discontent by becoming marriage experts themselves. 85% of the variance in whether a marriage succeeds or fails is based on the husband's actions and attitude. John Gottman, PhD, discovered that successful marriages involve husbands who resist immediate negative reactions to their wives' concerns. These men increase the odds of having a happy marriage by allowing themselves to accept the influence of their spouse. They recognize an opportunity to use their "man" skills to solve the problem. These husbands view marriage woes as they would any malfunctioning household item; they take it apart and try to fix it.

Clarke, a 30-year veteran of marriage, demonstrates these principles in a contribution to SecretsofMarriedMen.com. "When my wife asks me to do something, almost anything, my initial reaction used to be annoyance because I have lots of work to do, lots of things to do around the house, and lots of other bullsh-t reasons why not. However, most of what she asks me to do is actually quite reasonable, usually my responsibility, and I probably will end up doing it anyway. So, now I've trained myself to say 'yes' or 'no problem' as my initial response. This has contributed to less arguing and a better relationship."

For too long the Mr. Fix-it role has been the object of derision among women. Therapists see men's "tell-me-the-problem-and-I'll-tell-you-a-solution" approach as being insensitive to deeper issues affecting the relationship. The bottom line message of popular culture is: the thing men are best at-problem solving-serves no role in relationships.

Nonsense.

That's why I established a Web site and research base meant to honor men's approach to relationships and celebrate the ways we make marriage work. I then compiled the information gathered on the site, and wrote The Secrets of Happily Married Men: Eight Ways to Win Your Wife's Heart Forever

The Secrets of Happily Married Men earns its title from two kinds of secrets. One is the secret that a man keeps from his wife. Not the dark sultry secret of an affair or off-shore bank account, but a restraint in sharing the details of his day to day thoughts and actions with his wife-inside and out of the marriage. He may hide romance strategies (like the man who keeps notations in a Palm Pilot to send his wife flowers weekly) or feelings (of vulnerability or shame). Traditionally, men aren't educated in relationship skills. It is a long held truism that men don't buy relationship books. Even when an author pens words of advice for men, most editors politely decline the invitation to publish. Men's magazines, with few exceptions, avoid the vexing reality of relationships, reveling instead in the search for the perfect set of abs. Tightening our musculature, we are counseled, will insure that nubile women will lust after us. Similarly, "The Man Show" advises us on the best jobs to attract chicks. But what do we do once we marry them? Look at the periodicals and television directed to men-you won't see anything about that. Committed relationships end up being quite a bit more complicated than Maxim would have you believe. When it comes to marital duress, men interpret the media's silence as proof that such problems are unusual. SecretsofMarriedMen.com reveals marital strife is the rule, not the exception.

Get the Most Out of Bridal Shows

It’s almost that time of the year! Bridal Show season is just around the corner. Not surprising since 19% of all engagements take place in December. All other months are only 9% or less! (Source: Fairchild American Wedding Survey).

A Bridal Show is a great place to get started with your wedding plans. Held at various types of venues – including convention centers, banquet halls, even your local shopping mall -- they can be quite large (100 different vendors or more!) or much smaller, and more intimate (only 10-20 different vendors). But regardless of the size, the main purpose is still the same, you get a chance to take a sneak peek at the local professionals – see examples of their work, taste samples of cakes and foods, and collect vendor brochures and literature.

While tempting, now is not the time to get all of your planning done in a whirlwind of a few hours. You want to be a savvy shopper, and select just the right vendors for you. Before you go, here are some tips offered by Jean Neuhart, Professional Bridal Consultant, and owner of Weddings From The Heart, to make the trip easier, fun, and worthwhile.

Create a game plan. Which types of vendors you are most interested in? Are you looking for a DJ? Perhaps you still need a florist. Figure out the types of vendors you most want to see, then plan on visiting their booths first.

Things to bring: Pen and paper, (you’ll want to take notes). A tote bag (to carry all those flyers and brochures you’ll be picking up). Address labels (saves time filling out all those contest and door prize slips). Cash (to pay for admission and to purchase a light snack or beverage). Checkbook or credit card (in case you find the perfect vendor and want to put down a deposit).

Wear comfortable shoes. And if possible, leave your coat in the car. You’ll have enough to carry without having to lug around or wear a coat. And you’ll be that much happier if you’re comfortable. Also, wear clothing with pockets. When you come across a vendor that you especially want to remember, place his or her card in your pocket instead of in the tote bag where it can get mixed up with all of the other cards and flyers you’ll be getting.

Bring only one or two people with you. Have mom, your maid of honor, a bridesmaid, or fiancé come along. They can help you carry the brochures you’ve picked up, and you’ll have someone who knows you to bounce ideas off of. Just don’t bring a whole entourage. It’s harder to keep a large group together (you don’t want to be spending your time looking for who you came with!) Also, too many people will offer too many different opinions, which will be confusing, and not enjoyable at all.

Eat before the show. Not all shows offer snacks for purchase, and you don’t want to be walking around on an empty tummy! While there will be plenty of yummy samples of foods and cakes to try, this is not the place to load up your plate for a meal.

Take notes. Jot down pricing and package information, as well as your personal opinions. Is there anything about a vendors’ personality that stands out to you? Is he or she courteous and polite, or unfriendly and grumpy? Are they enjoying themselves, or do they seem to want to be somewhere else? After you get home and are sorting through that pile of flyers you’ve picked up, it will be hard to remember who was who. A few notes will help remind you who you’ll want to contact later, (and who you want to steer clear of!).

A popular portion of most bridal shows is the Fashion Show. If you’re like most brides, you’ll want to attend it, so find a seat early – at least 20-30 minutes before it starts. However, if you already have your gown, or otherwise aren’t planning on attending the fashion show, use this time to talk with the vendors you are most interested in. Things will be much more quiet and calm, and you’ll have a better chance at getting their undivided attention.

Don’t feel that you have to make a decision at the show. Sure, all of the vendors would love for you to sign on the dotted line right then, and may even offer a discount if you do. But wouldn’t you rather be a savvy shopper and take time to carefully look over everything and figure out which vendors will truly best suit the style of wedding you and your fiancé envision?

Before you decide to book someone, be very thorough. Carefully read everything (literature, samples, flyers, contract – EVERYTHING!!) before you sign and put down a deposit. Make sure what they offer is really right for your wedding vision, is what you and your fiancé really want, and that their terms are acceptable. Ask questions so there is a complete understanding between you and the vendor. Because it creates a clean, vertical line, it is particularly flattering to the short bride who wants to appear taller. The sleek sheath silhouette closely follows the line of the body.
