Changing NIC from Unmanaged to Managed State in Ubuntu

Before creating a teaming NIC on Ubuntu, ensure that the ethernet interfaces are in a managed state. This guide walks you through how to change the state from unmanaged to managed.

Step 1 — Check Netplan Configuration

ls /etc/netplan/

# if config file is 00-network-manager-all.yaml

cat /etc/netplan/00-network-manager-all.yaml

Step 2 — Display Network Device Status

nmcli device

Note: Identify devices that show STATE = unmanaged and note their DEVICE and TYPE.

Step 3 — Check for Unmanaged Devices

sudo grep -ri unmanaged-devices /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/

sudo grep -ri unmanaged-devices /etc/NetworkManager/

Make sure your device is not listed under unmanaged-devices.

Step 4 — Edit Global NetworkManager Configuration

sudo vim /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf

Add ethernet to the managed list by modifying the file like this:

[keyfile]

unmanaged-devices=*,except:type:ethernet

Then reload the NetworkManager service:

sudo systemctl reload NetworkManager.service

Step 5 — Verify the Device State

nmcli device

nmcli connection show

Step 6 — Restart Networking

nmcli networking off

nmcli networking on

Step 7 — Test Connectivity

nmcli connection up eno1

✅ Tip: Once your NIC shows as managed, you can proceed to configure NIC teaming using
netplan
or
nmcli
.

Solaris (SPARC/x86)

prtdiag -v | grep -i serial\n# or\n/usr/sbin/smbios -s system-summary

FreeBSD

dmidecode -s system-serial-number\n# or\nkenv -q smbios.system.serial

HP-UX

# On many HP systems\n/opt/hp/hpuxinfo/bin/serialnumber (vendor tool)\n# Or check SAM or iLO for servers; vendor utilities vary

If OS-level commands do not show serial, check vendor management interfaces (ILO, DRAC, IMM) or hardware labels.

        </details>

Quick troubleshooting & best practice

Run commands as an administrator/root where noted (use
sudo
for Linux).

Virtual machines often do not expose a hardware serial number; check hypervisor or cloud metadata service instead.

For servers, management controllers (iLO, DRAC, IMM) reliably show chassis serial numbers from the vendor.

If a command returns nothing, try alternate commands in the same section — vendors differ.

Hey there, Linux explorer! 🐧 Whether you’re tuning up your system or just curious about what’s under the hood, knowing your CPU details helps you understand performance and compatibility. Let’s make it fun and fast!

⚙️ Step 1: Quick CPU Summary

Command:

lscpu

💡 Output: Shows CPU model, architecture, cores, threads, and speed — all in a neat format.

Try it: Copy-paste the command above into your terminal and see what you’ve got!

🔍 Step 2: Dive Deeper (Per-Core Info)

Command:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

📊 Output: Displays detailed information for each CPU core. Perfect if you love seeing the nitty-gritty.

Pro Tip: Use
grep
to filter what you need — for example:

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep 'model name'

🧩 Step 3: Count CPU Cores

Command:

nproc

💬 It’ll tell you exactly how many cores your Ubuntu system sees — fast and clean!

📈 Step 4: Watch CPU in Real Time

Command:

top

Or for a cooler, colorized version:

htop

🧰 If you don’t have
htop
installed yet, run:

sudo apt install htop

Result: You’ll see live CPU, memory, and process stats dancing in real time!

🔧 Step 5: Hardware-Level Details

Command:

sudo lshw -class processor

📘 Tip: If Ubuntu says command not found, install it first:

sudo apt install lshw

📋 Quick Reference Table

Command

Purpose

lscpu

Show CPU summary (model, cores, speed)

cat /proc/cpuinfo

Detailed per-core information

nproc

Count number of CPU cores

top / htop

Monitor live CPU usage

sudo lshw -class processor

Hardware-level CPU details

💬 Bonus: Make It Fun!

🎯 Challenge yourself: Find your CPU speed and number of threads in under 30 seconds!

🧩 Use
watch -n 1 lscpu
to refresh CPU stats every second.

⚡ Compare
lscpu
outputs before and after system load — notice the clock speed change?

Boost Your PC Speed: Turn Off Windows Web Search in Minutes

Feeling the Start menu lag? Windows Web Search (the Bing/online results mixed into the Start search) can slow things down and leak queries to the cloud. Disable it to reclaim speed, improve privacy, and keep search results local. Below are two safe, reversible methods — pick what fits your Windows edition.

Why disable Windows Web Search?

Faster local searches: The Start menu returns results quicker when it doesn't try to query the web.

Less background network load: Stops unnecessary outbound queries to Bing.

Better privacy: Keeps search terms on your PC unless you explicitly browse the web.

Choose your approach

Pick Group Policy if you run Windows Pro/Enterprise. Pick the Registry method if you run Home or prefer manual control. Both are reversible.

Option A — Group Policy (Windows Pro / Enterprise)

Press
Win + R
, type
gpedit.msc
, and press Enter.

Navigate to:

Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Search

Double-click and Enable the policy:
Do not allow web search
.

Also consider enabling:
Don't search the web or display web results in Search
and
Don't allow Cortana
(optional).

Restart the PC (or run
gpupdate /force
in an elevated Command Prompt).

Result: Start searches will only return local results.

Option B — Registry (All Windows editions)

Use this when Group Policy isn't available. Always back up the Registry before changes.

Press
Win + R
, type
regedit
, and press Enter.

Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
. If
Explorer
doesn't exist, right-click → New → Key → name it
Explorer
.

Right-click
Explorer
→ New → DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it
DisableSearchBoxSuggestions
.

Double-click it and set the value to
1
.

Restart Windows.

Result: Web suggestions and Bing integration in Start are turned off.

Quick checklist — before and after

✅ Backup Registry if using Registry method.

✅ Test Start search: type a local filename to confirm quicker local results.

✅ If you need web results later, revert the setting (set policy to Not Configured or delete the Registry value).

Pro tip: If you still use web search sometimes, keep a browser bookmark for fast web lookups — but keep Start search focused locally for speed.

✅ Best Practice: Use VPN When Outside Trusted Networks

If you're accessing Nextcloud from outside your home or office network (like on public Wi-Fi, mobile data, etc.), then:

Use a VPN to connect to your private network securely first.

Then access your Nextcloud server through the VPN.

This protects you by:

Encrypting all your traffic.

Hiding your Nextcloud IP address from the public internet.

Preventing brute-force or port-scan attacks.

❗ If You Face the Internet Directly (No VPN):

If your Nextcloud is directly accessible on the internet (e.g., through a domain like
cloud.yourdomain.com
), make sure:

🔒 It uses HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate (e.g., via Let's Encrypt).

🔐 You have strong passwords and optionally 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) enabled.

🚧 Use a firewall and limit access as much as possible.

🧱 Consider using Fail2Ban or similar tools to block repeated failed login attempts.

🕵️‍♂️ Monitor logs for suspicious access.

🏠 If You're Only Using Nextcloud on a Local Network:

If the server is only used within a LAN (home or office):

VPN is not needed, but make sure it's not accidentally exposed to the internet.

You can still enable HTTPS and strong authentication for local safety.

EVE-NG Image Preparation Manual: Debian 12.6 (NetInstall)

Step-by-step guide to create a Debian 12.6 Linux node for EVE-NG using the NetInstall ISO.

    Tested on EVE-NG Community/Pro (QEMU)
    Last updated:

Why NetInstall? It’s a small ISO that downloads packages from Debian repositories during setup, letting you build a lean, up-to-date image without bloat.

1) Create Directory

Make a folder for the Debian image:

    Copy

mkdir -p /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/linux-debian

2) Create QEMU Hard Disk

Generate a 20 GB disk (adjust size as needed):

    Copy

qemu-img create -f qcow2 /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/linux-debian/hda.qcow2 20G

3) Set Boot Order

Boot from CD-ROM first for installation:

    Copy

echo "cd" > /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/linux-debian/boot_order

After installation, switch boot order to disk:

    Copy

echo "c" > /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/linux-debian/boot_order

4) Copy Debian ISO

Rename and copy your ISO as
cdrom.iso
:

    Copy

cp debian-12.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/linux-debian/cdrom.iso

5) Fix Permissions

Ensure correct ownership for EVE-NG:

    Copy

/opt/unetlab/wrappers/unl_wrapper -a fixpermissions

6) Install Debian

In EVE-NG GUI, add a new Linux node using
linux-debian
.

Allocate at least 2048 MB RAM.

Boot VM, install Debian to
hda.qcow2
.

7) Finalize Image

Remove ISO (optional):

    Copy

rm /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/linux-debian/cdrom.iso

Fix permissions again:

    Copy

/opt/unetlab/wrappers/unl_wrapper -a fixpermissions

✅ Done! Debian 12.6 image is now ready in EVE-NG.

Composer Configuration

Download the latest composer and install it.
During the installation process, choose C:\xampp\php\php.exe (location of the command-line PHP you want to use).

Open Command Prompt (without "Run as Administrator").

Changed to the folder location of Snipe-IT that you extracted previously (in Command Prompt).

Execute the command: composer install

If error during the execution of this command (usually on enabling the extension in php.ini), just enabled the extension required.

Personally, I'll execute the command composer update before continuing process no 4.

Snipe-IT Configuration

Open the folder of Snipe-IT that you extracted previously (in Windows Explorer).

Copy file name .env.example and rename as .env

Generate your App key by;

Open the folder of Snipe-IT (in Command Prompt).

Execute command php artisan key:generate

Browse PHPMyAdmin and create a database for snipe-it (for this manual, database named snipe-it)

Edit .env and changed;

APP_URL=localhost

DB_DATABASE=snipe-it

DB_USERNAME=root

There are several solution for these problem, but this solution suit for me;

Change the RPC Service as their dependency from command line.

To change the print spooler dependency, back to RPCSS, Please follow the below steps

Start the Command Prompt as administrator.

Now type the following command in the command line one by one followed by hitting the Enter key.

Net stop spooler
sc config spooler depend= RPCSS
Net start spooler
exit

Using net config server command through command prompt, we can check Maximum Logged On Users for current operating system.

In my case, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit operating system support 20 concurrent users.
What if the drives does not have any kind of switch?

Open Command Prompt, right-click - Run as administrator

When the command console opens, type DISKPART

List the drives by typing LIST DISK

Select the USB drive by typing SELECT DISK 1 (if disk 1 is your USB drive)

Inspect the details for that disk by typing DETAIL DISK
Check if the disk is marked as Read-only - e.g.

DISKPART > DETAIL DISK
TOSHIBA MK2559GSXP USB Device
Disk ID: EF78DCD3
Type : USB
Current Read-only State : Yes
Read-only : Yes
Pagefile Disk : No
Hibernation File Disk : No
Crashdump Disk : No
Clustered Disk : No

Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
  ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 5 H RMPARTUSB NTFS Partition 232 GB Healthy

Note: It is also possible to mark a volume as read-only, so try LIST VOLUME and SELECT VOLUME F: (where F: is your USB drive letter) and then DETAIL VOLUME to list the attributes.

**If it says 'Read-only: NO' in Diskpart but shows as 'Read-Only' in Disk Manager, then the disk is probably physically write-protected (or perhaps write-protected by the firmware in the device's internal controller). In this case the following procedure will have little affect! You should look for a write-protect (aka 'Lock' or maybe a padlock symbol) switch on the device.

**If you are sure that none exists, consider re-programming the controller firmware
Ok so this problem was happening with several gems. After some hunting I realised make wasn't installed.
sudo apt-get install build-essential
Unfortunately the machine only show lo (loopback) interface.

When we check ifconfig -a | grep eth, it shows eth0 which means that the interface is exist.

The problem is the machine could not determine eth0 either static or Dynamic IP Address.

In my case, I wanted the machine to grab the IP Address from DHCP, in that case;

I just key-in sudo dhclient eth0

Then, try ping to www.google.com (for example). Good Luck
