BSNL to expand Karnataka network

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)'s Karnataka Circle is all set to expand its customer base significantly over the coming months. BSNL presently has a customer base of 1.8 million in Karnataka, and aims to increase it to 4 million by the end of this financial year. In an effort to enhance its network, the company intends to increase the capacity of its exisitng BSNL towers and erect as many as 800 more towers in various regions across the State. --MP

Dinakaran, new Chief justice

With Chief judge Cyriac Joseph being promoted to Supreme Court, Justice P D Dinakaran has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. President Pratibha Patil has cleared the appointment of Justice P.D. Dinakaran to this effect. Dinakaran, a judge of Madras HC has remained as a permanant judge of Madras HC for several years. --MP

IISc to make $100 laptop

Researchers of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore along with IIT, Madras is working out on a project for making low cost computers specially packaged for students. The laptop estimated at Rs 4000 is being projected by the Indian governement's human resource development as an initiative to help students afford with access to modern information technology. "The initiative has been taken by government to enable students to make the most out of information technology, which is emerging as a catalyst for the country's socio-economic development," said Minister of State for HRD. --MP

ID cards for citizens

In an effort to curb growing terrorist attacks, the Karnataka government has plans to issue identitly cards for its residents in the State. The government intends to begin the process of giving ID cards in major cities of the State initially. " We have already discussed about revamping Anti-Terrorist Cell(ATC) and strengthening it with men and material," informed Chief Minister Yeddiyuruppa on the measures being adopted by the govt. He also said about installing surveillence camera at sensitive places, creating more awareness to the public, strengthening anti terrorist squads etc. --MP

State was warned: Center

Reacting on the Friday's Bangalore terror attacks, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal has said that the Center had in advance warned the Karnataka government of possible terror threats to the city. "The Intelligence Bureau had received inputs that terrorists could target the cyber cities of Hyderabad and Bangalore. Both the state governments were told to be on high alert," he pointed out. Meanwhile condemning the blasts the Union home minister Shivraj Patil has extended all support to the state and also announced a new security plan for IT and other industries. --MP

9 Seriel Blasts rocks Blore

As many as 9 low intensity blasts took place in various parts of Bangalore on Friday since afternoon, an indication that the India's IT capital city has become more vulnerable to terrorist atacks. 2 people were killed and a dozen people injured in the blasts which were mostly planted at construction sites, road sides and refugee camps. The first blast occured at 1:30pm and simutaneously a series of blasts took place at Hosur Road, Madiwala, Nayandahalli, Vittal Mallya Road and Richmond Circle all within 15 minutes time. Later at 5pm another blast occured at Mysore Road. Security has been heightened across the State following the blasts. --MP

Karnataka to get power from Chattisgarh

Faced with power shortage, Karnataka Government is seeking the help of Chattisgarh to meet the power supply demand in the State. The Chattisgarh government has agreed to provide power to Karnataka on this regard. However its learnt that though Karnataka has asked for 500 Mw of energy, Chattisgarh would be able to allocate only 100 Mw as they too have domestic demands. The move is expected to bring atleast some relief to Karnataka which is reeling on acute power crisis due to poor rains.--MP

Retirement age raised to 60

In a significant move that would benefit over 5 lakh empoyees of the State government, Chief minister Yeddyurappa has announced an extension of retirement age by 2years from 58 years to 60 years. The decision on this regard was announced by the CM during the budget presentation. Defending his decision to raise the retirement age, he said that there was nothing wrong as long as the people were willing to work. Even at present retired employees are often considered for work whenever there is a need for staff, he pointed out. --MP

Yeddy presents budget

Continental plans manf plant in Blore

NICE proj: SC stays EC order

The Supreme Court has stayed the Election Commission's order which stalled the construction work of the Bangalore-Mysore Expressway Infrastructure Project. This comes after the project promoters, Nandi Infrastructure filing a petition challenging the EC's order. Earlier the project which was stalled in view with the election processes in Karnataka was resumed on specific directives of the Supreme Court. But the project was again stopped by the EC. Putting a stay on the EC order, the apex court has also asked for replies from the Commission and the Government. --MP

Two JD(S) MLAs and two Congress MLAs has quitted their respective parties to join the ruling BJP side making it hard for the opposition parties. Following Cong MLA Asnotikar Anand Vasant's resignation, another Congress MLA J Narasimhaswamy has resigned his Doddaballapur assembly seat to join the BJP. The two JD(S) legislators are Balachandra L Jarakhiholi and K Shivanagouda Naik and all of them are said to contest the byepolls under the BJP ticket. The new move is seen as an attempt by the BJP to cross the half way mark of 112 all on its own in the Karnataka assembly. --MP

Kannada in unaided pvt schools relaxed

The High Court on Wednesday in an order relaxed the State government's policy which made it mandatory for unaided private schools to keep Kannada language as the medium of instruction. The Court in its judgement declared the government's decision to compulsorily follow monther tongue or regional language in unaided pvt schools as invalid as it violated the students right to choose the language and medium of instruction. However it upheld the policy to follow monther tongue as the instruction medium for those schools run or aided by the State. --MP

Blore facing fuel crisis

The fuel shortage in Karnataka is going to get harder over the coming days. With oil companies failing to supply enough fuel, most regions in the Southern state are facing fuel crisis especially in Bangalore and Chennai. Sources indicate that the overgrowing demand coupled with the decline in stock has resulted to the fuel shortage. Truckers go on indefinite strike

Truckers across the country are going on an indefenite strike from Tuesday midnight in view with the nation wide stir called by the All India Motor Transport Congress. Govt press for 2 airports

After the launch of Karnataka's new Bengaluru International Airport, the State government is now wanting to retain the old HAL airport for commercial operations. "We want to retain the HAL airport for short-haul flights. The central government should consider this," said the Sttae's Information Minister. Observing examples of cities with two airports operating, he said that the central government should hold talks with the new airport authorities on retaining the HAL airport, which is also very close to the city center. --MP

Padmapriya case: CBI inquiry demanded

CBI inquiry has been sought into the alleged suicide of Padmapriya Bhat, wife of Udupi based MLA K. Raghupati Bhat. Oman Air starts from Blore

Oman's national carrier, Oman Air has started flight operations to Bangalore from Monday. The airline will operate five flights per week to Bangalore from Muscat and return route. The Boeing 737/800 operated aircraft will leave Muscat on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The flight will leave Muscat at 2100 hrs and reach Bangalore at 0150hrs. The return flight to Muscat will leave Blore at 2:50hrs and arrive Muscat at 4:40hrs the same day. --MP

Panic over fertiliser shortage

There were fresh violence on farmers who protested over fertiliser shortage in various parts in Karnataka. The situation turned ugly with 1 farmer allegedly killed while police fired on the agitating farmers in Haveri district in Karnataka. Many others got injured in the incident. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has called on for urgent meeting to review the crisis and bring the situation under control. Similar protests were also underway at other districts of Dharwad, Davangere, Hassan, Kolar etc. However Yeddyurappa has denied of any scarcity of fertilisers or agricultural seeds and claimed the agitation by farmers as politically motivated. --MP

Blore among top world commerce centers

Mumbai at 48th rank and New Delhi at 61st position were the other Indian cities which were listed under the 'Mastercard Worldwide Centres of Commerce Index'. "The booming Chinese and Indian economies have clearly continued the shift of economic power to Asia. The strong presence of Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa cities is further evidence of the growing influence of the region not just in manufacturing and services, but also in broadly based commercial strength," the report indicated. --MP
