Lieutenant Colonel Rank confers to Mohan Lal

Superstar Mohan Lal donned the Army's olive-green uniform. He was conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the Chief of the Army staff General Deepak Kapoor at a function at the Army headquarters in New Delhi on Thursday. He has been given this rank for his excellent patriotic roles in the films 'Keerthichakra' and 'Kuruskhethra' directed by Major Ravi.

He is the second recent high-profile personality after Kapil Dev to don the Territorial Army uniform. Kapil was honoured in October 2008. Lal will join the 122 Infantry Batalion [Territorial Army] of Chennai Regiment or Kannur Terriers. He would be the brand ambassador of the Army. He had visited Kargil a couple of times to get training.

Under the TA system, citizens from all walks of life can volunteer for 'part-time military service' while pursuing their regular professions during peace-time. In the event of national emergencies, they may be called upon to become 'full-time' personnel to act in a supporting role to regular Army units deployed to meet the country's defence and internal security requirements.

After the commissioning, Mohanlal visited Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony at his office. "This is one of the most precious moments of my life, and I will do all I can for the good of the nation, in the true spirit of a soldier. Like others in our country, I pride the armed forces and it is dream come true that I can now serve shoulder to shoulder with our Officers/ Junior Commissioned Officers and men." Lal said. His wife and son were also with him.

Mohanlal fans across Kerala celebrated this achievement.

Federation chairman Vinayan said the agitation has postponed as the Labour Minister P.K.Gurudasan consented to call for a meeting with labour commissioner and organisation on July 16 to discuss the issues. Producer of the film `Vilpangalkappuram', Aryadan Shoukath said, there is no differences of opinion with director T.V. Chandran in the issue of cinema. ``Chandrettan has introduced me to the film world. We will certainly make films in the future also'', he said. He was speaking in a press meet at Kozhikode press club on Wednesday.

He alleged that as many organisations here had taken up the Gujarat communal riot issue for their benefit, but none of them did take care of the welfare of the victims who became helpless in the riot. Only some culture and secular organisations could do something for them. 38 women, who appeared in the last part of the film `Vilapangalkappuram' were the real
victims of riot.

He never expected that this film would be a hit in the box office. That's why he was not worried about collection or profit. He added that his next project would start in January with an internationally acclaimed director.

Kunhjimalu was Appukkuttan's uncle's daughter. One day Kunhjimalu was brought to Kizhakumbattu Malukutty Amma's house to do household work by Appu Kuttan. Haridas was the only son of Kizhakumbattu family. He returned home after completing higher studies. Later he fell in love with house maid Kunhji Malu. Archana dons the role of Kunhjimalu, Reema Kallungal dons the role of Sharothe Ammini, Kailesh as Haridas and Suresh as Appukuttan. They are supported by Samvritha Sunil, Devaki Amma and Joy Mathew. The story moves around a scholar named Dr. Siva Prasad. He had doctorate in many languages. Many research students came to him to get his guidance. His main hobby was to do farming with these students. He loved his sister so much and dedicated his life for her. Even he did not marry since he believed that his own family would obstruct to pay more attention for his sister. Like the Bheeshmar in the epic he too carried certain similarities. Lohi casts a debutant to do the role of anti hero. Unni Krishnan, a Gujrath Malyali will do the role. Yester years heroine Menaka's daughter Revathi will be the heroine. Lohithadas introduced a new lyricist K.V Udayan through 'Bheeshmar' . He is Carnatic musician. One of the songs in this film is penned by Lohi himself. The film also gives importance to music.

Court stays release of 'Kutty Srank'

The release of Shaji N.Karun's Mamootty film 'Kutty srank' has got stayed by Kollam sub court. The court allowed stay by accepting a petition filed by A.R. Chandrasekhara Kurup and other members of the Azhakathu family. The plaintiff claimed that screening of some scenes shot at the ancestral home, deities placed in the Kalari and Sarpakavu would hurt them. The Goethe Zentrum is launching a 'German Film Club' for film lovers in the city. The inaugural screening of the film will take place on Saturday. The first film to be screened will be 'I'am Juli', directed by Fatih Akin. Dubbed as a 'nomadic romantic comedy' the film revolves around a man who has never been luck in love but thinks his fortune may have changed, only to find his life more complicated. Permanent venue for Film Festival in Kerala

Culture minister M.A Baby said the state government is planning on a proposal to create a permanent facility for holding the annual International Film Festival of Kerala [IFFK]. He was replying to the question in the Assembly. The government has asked film maker Adoor Gopala Krishan to give his views on the issue and he had submitted the same. The government would decide on the matter after discussions on the proposals submitted by Adoor Gopala Krishnan. The goverment is also working on a proposal to set up an International film institute and video archive of Malayalam films.

The Kerala state Chalachitra academy had a DVD collection of 3,000 films. A scheme for screening one film every week would become operational by August. He said the government would also look into the members suggestion that sanction must be given to private agencies to construct multiplexes in the state with a five year tax holiday. The government could think of entering into agreements with multiplex owners for setting apart one of the cinemas for screening quality films. The proposal would have to be discussed with the revenue, tourism and finance ministers before a decision could be taken. He also promised to look into the plea for a hike in the subsidy of Rs. 4 lakhs being paid to Malayalam films made entirely in the state using the infrastructural facilities and equipment of Keral State Film Development Corporation.

Mammootty Inaugurates Heart Foundation

A charity foundation has started under the guidance of Mamootty named 'Care and Share International Foundation' for helping the poor children suffering from heart disease, based at Kochi. Children below 12 years of age from Kerala and Lakshadweep would get help from this scheme. In the first step hundred children would get benefit. For those who need surgery will be carried at Sree Chithira Thirunal hospital at Thiruvananthapuram, MIMS at Kozhikode and Amritha Institute at Eranakulam. The foundation has signed MoU with these Hospitals. As a start of this programme each hospital will carry surgery today (Thursday) for one child. Foundation would spare Rs. One lakh for each surgery. It will receive donations from interested persons to serve the purpose. The selection process of children will be done under the guidance of doctors from a panel. The foundation was inaugurated by Mamootty at Kumbala Ramada resort in Kochi on Wednesday.
