Phalke award for Tapan Sinha

Renowned Bengali filmmaker Tapan Sinha has been chosen for the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the year 2006.

The award given for his lifetime contribution to Indian cinema carries cash price of Rs 1 million, a Swarna Kamal citation and a shawl.

His films have won a number of National Film Awards and has been recognised with international awards as well. Besides Bengali films, he has also made Hindi and Oriya films.

Vidya Balan with another Bengali film

Bollywood's popular actres Vidya Balan is back with another Bengali film.

This time it would be with director Gautam Haldar with whom she made her debut in films.

Indeed her first film, Bhalo Theko was in Bengali directed by Halder and since then she was longing to act in more Bengali films.

Vidya is all excited to do another project in Bengali since she considers the film industry close to her hearts as it gave her the launching pad for her film career.

"This is my way of saying thank you to the Bengali film industry. It welcomed me at a time when I had no place in the Hindi film industry. It was a dream to have done a role in a Bengali one as my very first film," says Vidya.

Shemaroo Entertainment is looking forward to the theatrical release of 'Anuranan' in Hindi – the Bengali film which remarkably ran for 100 days in theatres in Kolkata. Presented by Screenplay Films and Shemaroo Entertainment, this film is the directorial debut of Bengali film-maker – Aniruddha Roy-Chowdhury. Anuranan is produced by Jeet Bannerjee, Indrani Mukerjee and the Director himself. The lead casts in the film are Rahul Bose, Rituparna Sengupta, Raima Sen and Rajat Kapoor. The Last Lear

Amitabh's latest experiment was with Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh. He teamed up with Ghosh in his English film The Last Lear, which is based on veteran Bengali actor Utpal Dutt's play Aajker Shahjahan. It revolves around an aging Shakespearean actor who takes on one of the bard's most challenging roles. The film was well received at the Toronto Film Festival last month.

Rajaa Mukerji, who has honed his skills with television, has chosen to make his directorial debut with a Bengali film. Rajaa has cinema in his genes, what with father Ram Mukerji having produced and directed several Bengali films and sister Rani, one of the top stars of Hindi films. Based on his own story, Bidhataar Lekha is jointly scripted by Rajaa and Kamalesh Kunti Singh with dialogue by Tapendu Ganguly. It is a relatively sophisticated production, considering that this is Rajaa’s first film. His handling of the scenes featuring Priyangshu far supersedes his heavy-handed handling of the rest of the film. Meow 104.8 FM to hit Kolkata airwaves

Meow 104.8 FM, the radio initiative from the India Today Group, is all set to officially launch in Kolkata on September 20, 2007, preceeded by a soft launch on September 15. Meow FM has a programming mix for the ‘she’ listener. Its tagline – ‘Thodi Meethi, Thodi Catty’ – reflects the station’s positioning, conveying its desire to appeal to the myriad moods of a woman. In Kolkata, Meow FM will air programmes in Bangla and Hindi during the day, and towards the evening the programmes will gradually migrate to English, with Hindi as the common factor across the day.

Suchitra Sen recovering

Suchitra Sen, who was admitted to the ICCU of Bel View Nursing Home recently for high blood pressure, fever and urinary infection, is slowly recovering. She is under strict medical observation and should be discharged soon. The actor, who bid farewell to the celluloid world three decades ago, is very upset at the unnecessary hype the media is creating regarding her illness. The 76-year-old actor, who has been living the life of a recluse, doesn’t like to be the center of attraction. Having completed 55 years in cinema, Suchitra Sen’s first film was Saat Number Quadi in Bengali in 1953. She and Uttam Kumar formed a romantic pair in hits like Agni Pariksha, Harano Sur, Saptapadi and Jeevan Trishna. She bagged the Best Actor Award for her performance in Saat Pake Bandhain the Moscow International Film Festival in 1963. Her memorable Hindi films include Devdas, Musafir, Bambai Ka Babu, Mamta and Aandhi.
