HHH announced Monday that it has submitted comments on the proposed Terminal One development at 2750 W. Commodore Way. According to the organization, public comments on the project will be accepted through June 26.

The proposal includes a new marine sales and services building, a bulkhead, boardwalk, docks, removal of existing piers, floats and piles, and parking for 75 vehicles.

In its letter to the city, HHH says the project is located near the great blue heron colony at Commodore Park, which it says had 63 nests in 2026 after the birds relocated from Kiwanis Ravine. The group notes that Seattle has designated great blue heron habitat as an Environmentally Critical Area and adopted Director’s Rule 13-2018 to guide management of nesting colonies.

Among its requests, the organization asks the city to clarify how Director’s Rule 13-2018 applies to the proposal and to ensure the project complies with required buffers, seasonal timing restrictions, and limits on construction-related disturbance.

The letter also raises concerns about plans to remove existing piers, floats, and pilings, which the organization says currently serve as staging habitat where great blue herons gather before nesting.

“Great blue herons use pre-breeding “staging” sites to gather, display courtship behavior, and establish pair bonds prior to moving into the nesting colony,” HHH wrote in its letter. “Removing these structures without replacing their ecological function risks degrading essential behavioral habitat that supports successful nesting at Commodore Park.”

HHH is asking the city to require an evaluation by a qualified wildlife biologist of how removing those structures could affect heron behavior and to consider replacement structures that maintain or enhance perching and staging opportunities.

In addition, the organization is requesting a comprehensive environmental and wildlife impact analysis that examines potential effects on great blue herons, salmon habitat, and other fish and wildlife resources in the area. The group also recommends evaluating alternatives and mitigation measures, including construction timing, design changes, habitat enhancements, and lighting and noise controls.

If the project moves forward, HHH is asking the city to prohibit high-noise construction during heron nesting and pre-nesting seasons within applicable buffers unless a qualified biologist determines there is no active nesting or significant disturbance risk. The group is also requesting year-round and seasonal buffer protections and construction practices designed to reduce lighting, noise, vibration, and in-water disturbance.

“These measures would align the project with Seattle’s adopted great blue heron management framework and broader policies to protect environmentally critical areas and wildlife habitat,” HHH wrote.

According to the clubs, Ballard FC has honored a local artist each season since its inaugural 2022 campaign by wearing a special collaboration jersey during a designated match. This year’s featured artist is Victor Meléndez, a Seattle-based illustrator, graphic designer and art director.

Meléndez drew inspiration from his Mexican heritage and the Pacific Northwest in creating this season’s collaborative jersey. The design includes imagery that changes when viewed through custom 3D glasses, and the clubs say the collaboration continues their annual tradition of partnering with local artists whose work helps shape the community.

Ballard FC will face West Seattle Junction FC at 4 p.m., followed by Salmon Bay FC taking on Tacoma Galaxy at 7:30 p.m.

Ballard FC enters Wednesday after a 2-1 comeback victory over West Seattle Junction FC on June 21. The clubs say West Seattle will be looking for its first result against Ballard FC after an 0-3-1 record in the series.

The evening match carries playoff implications for Salmon Bay FC, which the club says needs a win to remain in control of its playoff hopes.

Tacoma Galaxy, now in its second USL W League season, enters the match with a 1-7-2 record. Earlier this season, Salmon Bay FC defeated Tacoma 3-0. The clubs also met late last season, when they played to a 1-1 draw.

The June 24 doubleheader follows another shared match day earlier this month, when Ballard FC and Salmon Bay FC hosted Portland clubs during a Music Night event at Interbay Stadium. That doubleheader featured Cascadia matchups, live music, and the first phase of the stadium’s expansion.

Fans attending both matches will need to leave the stadium between games before gates reopen for the second match at 6:30 p.m.

The clubs are also collecting donations for the Ballard Food Bank during the doubleheader. Ballard FC is accepting donations of pasta and canned sauce, while Salmon Bay FC is collecting travel-size hygiene products.

Both matches will feature food vendors, concessions, and the Bridges United Foundation Beer Garden. Parking around Interbay Stadium is expected to be limited, and the clubs recommend using public transit, biking, or other transportation options. Both matches will also be streamed live for fans unable to attend.

In a statement released Monday, June 22, the restaurant said it closed “out of concern for the safety and wellbeing of our guests.”

The restaurant said its security team documented incidents over the previous two days involving guests as they arrived, including “harassment, name-calling, and spitting.” Management urged the union “to stop this behavior on the picket line” and said that, after consulting with its security team, it decided to close for the evening.

“To every guest — regulars and first-time visitors alike — who experienced or witnessed this: we are deeply sorry,” the statement said. “You deserve a warm welcome, a great meal, and genuine hospitality.”

The restaurant said it is working on a plan to reopen and plans to share more information about the labor dispute in the coming days.

The closure comes several days after unionized workers at the Ballard restaurant began an unfair labor practice strike.

According to United Creatures of the Sea, the union representing striking workers at The Walrus and the Carpenter, employees voted unanimously to authorize the strike after more than a year of negotiations over a first union contract with Sea Creatures, the Seattle restaurant group operated by chef Renee Erickson and partners. The union alleges that Sea Creatures has engaged in unfair labor practices intended to delay negotiations and avoid reaching a first contract. According to previous reporting by The Seattle Times, the union has filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board making those allegations.

The union says workers, including cooks, oyster shuckers, servers, dishwashers, bartenders, bakers and baristas, have experienced reduced hours, lost income, worsened benefits and instability while bargaining for a first contract. The union says workers decided to strike in an effort to pressure Sea Creatures to bargain in good faith and negotiate a contract.

United Creatures of the Sea has also launched a GoFundMe campaign to provide financial assistance to striking workers. According to the fundraiser, donations will be used to help replace lost income during the strike and cover expenses such as rent, groceries, transportation and medical costs.

Sea Creatures has previously said it remains committed to negotiating in good faith, reaching a fair agreement and returning to regular operations, according to previous reporting by The Seattle Times.

King County Metro and the City of Seattle are launching the Golden Gardens Direct, a pilot route that will operate daily from June 27 through Aug. 30. The shuttle will run every 30 minutes between Ballard’s Market Street corridor and Golden Gardens Park from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

According to King County Metro, adult fares will cost $3, while youth ages 18 and younger ride free. Reduced fares of $1 are available for ORCA LIFT riders and Regional Reduced Fare Permit holders. Riders can pay with an ORCA card, the Transit GO Ticket app or cash.

Metro says the vehicles will be equipped with bike racks and wheelchair lifts. Bicycles and pets are allowed at no additional charge.

City leaders say the pilot is intended to make it easier for people to reach Golden Gardens without driving while helping reduce summer traffic and parking demand at the popular waterfront park.

Seattle City Councilmember Dan Strauss told KING 5 that Golden Gardens has long lacked a direct transit connection, noting that existing transit options require a lengthy walk or a hike from nearby bus stops.

The pilot service is scheduled to operate through Aug. 30.

The new shuttle launches alongside other summer changes at Golden Gardens. As My Ballard previously reported, Seattle Parks has also added private overnight security patrols and earlier seasonal closing hours at the park.

The project will expand the park at 719 N. 35th St., adjacent to the Fremont Branch Library, with construction expected to continue through spring 2027.

Seattle Parks and Recreation acquired the vacant lot immediately west of the existing park in 2010 to expand the park and add green space to the neighborhood. The project has a budget of $1.9 million from the Seattle Park District for planning, design, permitting and construction. Wyser Construction Co. Inc. was awarded the construction contract.

According to Seattle Parks and Recreation, the final design will create an accessible connection between North 35th Street and the Fremont Library’s lower-level meeting room. It also includes an embankment slide and hill climb, which were identified through community feedback, along with an expanded entry plaza featuring new benches and picnic tables.

The project will preserve the historic staircase connecting the park to the alley.

Seattle Parks and Recreation said crews and the contractor will work to minimize impacts to the surrounding neighborhood during construction. The project is expected to result in some parking impacts, along with increased construction vehicle traffic using the alley south of the property.

Construction is expected to be complete in spring 2027.

Seattle Parks and Recreation says the shuttle will operate on Saturdays through Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The shuttle will loop between the East, North and South Beach parking lots, arriving at each stop about every 30 minutes. The final departure from the beach is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.

People, service animals and strollers are allowed on the shuttle. Pets, coolers, surfboards, paddleboards and other large items are not permitted.

Seattle Parks and Recreation notes that the Discovery Park Visitor Center remains closed because of flood damage. From June 18 through Sept. 6, an information booth will be available on-site Thursdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., depending on staff availability. The booth will not be open on June 19, but it will operate on July 4.

The beach shuttle is free to use, and donations are accepted to help support the service.

The bridge closed at about 7:30 p.m. after becoming stuck due to a technical issue. The closure lasted about an hour and a half before the bridge reopened.

After service was restored, SDOT said the high temperatures caused the problem. According to the agency, hot weather can cause the bridge’s steel components to expand, creating issues with the bridge’s opening and closing mechanisms.

After the closure was reported, an SDOT repair team responded to the scene. The team included a lead supervisor, mechanic, and electrician, who assessed the problem and completed the repairs needed to reopen the bridge.

Heat-related bridge issues aren’t new during periods of extreme temperatures. When forecasts call for prolonged heat, SDOT has at times proactively sprayed cool water on the Ballard, Fremont, and University bridges to keep their steel components from overheating and expanding. Those “cooling showers” are intended to reduce the risk of the movable sections becoming stuck, and they can require brief bridge closures while crews are working.

In an update to constituents, Seattle City Councilmember Dan Strauss said Seattle City Attorney Erika Evans successfully pursued legal action against the owner of the ship Albert, which has been illegally moored at the public pier on 24th Avenue NW along the Lake Washington Ship Canal since March 2020.

Albert has a long history that stretches back nearly a century. According to local researcher Chris Mills (of Sea Lion Radio fame), who is writing a book about the vessel, the ship was named in memory of Albert Thorvaldsson, a 25-year-old Icelandic fisherman who disappeared at sea in 1936 while tending fishing nets near the town of Olafsfjordur. After his death, his parents helped launch a fundraising campaign that ultimately led to the construction of Northern Iceland’s first rescue vessel. When the steel-hulled ship was built in Reykjavik and launched in 1956, it was named Albert in his honor.

Mills says the vessel spent its early years with the Icelandic Coast Guard, serving during the Cod Wars, conducting search-and-rescue missions, and supporting scientific research. After leaving Iceland in the late 1970s, the Albert took on a wide range of roles, including as a research vessel, diving charter boat, mail carrier in Costa Rica, and support vessel during the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup in Alaska. Despite its many owners and changing purposes over the decades, the ship has retained the name Albert.

Strauss said the vessel has blocked public access to the pier for more than six years. He also said it attracted criminal activity and required an emergency response in 2023 after it began taking on water.

According to Strauss, a judge ruled in the city’s favor, finding that the vessel constituted a nuisance. The court imposed civil penalties totaling $185,500 and ordered an additional $500 per day until the vessel is removed. Strauss said the owner is also responsible for all costs associated with enforcing the order and removing the vessel.

Strauss said the ruling means the neighborhood will soon regain access to the public pier once the vessel is removed.

The public pier was rebuilt in 2018 as part of Seattle Public Utilities’ Ship Canal Water Quality Project, which aims to reduce stormwater and sewage overflows into the Lake Washington Ship Canal during heavy rains. The replacement removed creosote-treated wood pilings to improve water quality and fish habitat, while adding a new public viewing area with a concrete surface featuring artwork by local artist Christian French. The project was also intended to improve pedestrian access to the waterfront.

On Friday, June 19, Seattle Parks and Recreation will host a free outdoor screening of the Australia vs. United States match at Ballard Commons Park from noon to 4 p.m. The event is part of the department’s Beautiful Game Activities taking place around the city during the tournament. According to the Seattle Police Department, officers responded to reports of a stabbing in the 2100 block of Northlake Way at about 10:30 p.m. on June 16.

When officers arrived, they found a man with a laceration to his lower abdomen. Police provided first aid until the Seattle Fire Department arrived and transported him to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.

Police said the investigation found the victim had been in his tent when he heard a disturbance nearby. When he went outside, he saw the suspect arguing with several people about using electrical outlets in a park restroom to charge phones.

According to investigators, the victim approached the suspect in an attempt to defuse the situation. During the encounter, the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim before leaving the park on a bicycle.

Officers searched the area and located the suspect several blocks away, taking him into custody.

Detectives with the Seattle Police Department’s Homicide and Assault Unit are investigating what led to the assault.

The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of assault.

General Manager Sara Larsen said the closure is intended to give the longtime neighborhood business “a fresh start” following a recent change in management.

The work includes deep cleaning floors in the back of the building, refinishing wood behind the bar, pressure washing the floors and patio, adding new glassware, installing new service stations and sinks, and making other behind-the-scenes improvements.

Larsen said many of the projects focus on back-of-house areas and bar equipment that have experienced years of wear in the bar’s 122 years of existence.

Owner Max Genereaux, who has been with Hattie’s Hat since the late 1990s after starting as a bartender, has been helping complete the work himself. Larsen said he has been hands-on throughout the renovation process.

If work stays on schedule, Hattie’s Hat plans to reopen Saturday for brunch. Larsen said customers can also expect an updated drink menu featuring new cocktails.

According to the board, there were no candidates for Position #6, which represents a property owner or businessperson. Meagan Teutsch was elected to Position #7, representing a property owner. Her two-year term begins in July 2026.

The election was conducted by mail, with ballots tabulated on Tuesday, June 16, at Good Grief by a designee of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods under the supervision of a person from the district.

Established in 1976, the Ballard Avenue Landmark District is a nationally recognized historic district created to commemorate Ballard’s unique history. The district is governed by a seven-member board, with five members elected by the Ballard Avenue Landmark District community and two appointed by the Mayor of Seattle. Board members typically serve two-year terms.

The Ballard Avenue Landmark District is coordinated by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods’ Historic Preservation Program, which oversees the designation and protection of more than 400 historic structures, sites, objects, vessels, and eight historic districts throughout Seattle.

The project, organized in part by the Crown Hill Village Association and led by Urban ArtWorks’ Base Crew youth artists, transformed both sides of the Crown Hill underpass through a process that included community outreach, design sessions, and public paint days. The mural was developed using ideas shared by neighbors about what they wanted to see represented in the space.

The mural was the result of a months-long community effort that began with public outreach earlier this year. Neighbors were invited to share ideas for the artwork before Urban ArtWorks’ Base Crew youth artists transformed that feedback into a final design. The project then moved into a series of community paint days, where hundreds of volunteers joined the youth artists to help bring the mural to life over several weeks this spring.

The artwork draws on themes suggested during the community engagement process, incorporating Pacific Northwest landscapes alongside neighborhood-inspired elements and imaginative details spread across both sides of the underpass.

One wall focuses on waterways and local wildlife, including salmon and beavers, alongside a crowned cat that Urban ArtWorks says was inspired by the neighborhood’s well-known feline residents.

The mural’s opposite side shifts to forest imagery, insects, flowers, and brightly painted doorways. Urban ArtWorks says the doorways reference the structure of the underpass while also reflecting the individual creativity of the youth artists.

Urban ArtWorks says hundreds of volunteers and community members participated in the community paint days, working alongside youth artists to help complete the mural.

“Seeing all the ideas from the community, seeing the wide range of ideas, and then talking to the youth about it, and then seeing that sort of turn into what is the mural now… it’s been a great evolution,” said Crown Hill community member Thuy.

Base Crew member Zayneb said the experience of working on such a large mural changed depending on the perspective.

“Working on the mural really close, it looks weird and distorted, but then when you cross the street it looks really beautiful when you step back, and I think that makes it really rewarding,” Zayneb said.

Urban ArtWorks said the project received partial funding through a Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Matching Fund grant. The organization also recognized the Crown Hill Village Association, neighborhood partners, and volunteers who contributed throughout the project.

The outage began Monday morning and affected customers from the Lake Union area north through Ballard and Discovery Park. Seattle City Light was able to restore service to most customers by early afternoon.

In a statement provided to My Ballard, Seattle City Light said the outage was caused by the failure of a lightning arrestor, a protective device installed in the utility’s distribution system to protect equipment from dangerous overvoltage conditions caused by lightning strikes.

The utility said crews were dispatched to diagnose and repair the problem. Before repairs were completed, Seattle City Light restored power to all affected customers by rerouting electricity through other parts of its system.

The outage came during unusually hot weather across the Seattle area, with temperatures reaching record levels for the year.

The two-day event will feature a craft market, food and drink vendors, live music, art car displays, and the annual Fremont Solstice Parade. The fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 21.

The main event is the Fremont Solstice Parade, produced by the Fremont Arts Council. The 35th annual parade is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 20. Organizers say the route will start at 3rd Avenue NW and Leary Way NW, travel along North 36th Street, turn onto North 35th Street, and conclude near the Fremont Rocket and Seattle Art Cars display within the fairgrounds.

The Fremont Arts Council describes the parade as a community-powered event featuring art, performances, costumes, and handmade creations. Participation is open to the public, and parade entries must be people-powered, with no motorized vehicles except electric wheelchairs.

Another longtime solstice tradition is the Solstice Cyclists, a group of mostly nude body-painted cyclists who ride ahead of the parade. Participation is open to adults, and riders may choose how much or how little clothing to wear. The cyclists typically gather for painting sessions before making their way to the parade route, where they complete loops ahead of the official start of the Fremont Solstice Parade. Organizers note that while nudity is common, it is not required, and many participants focus on body paint, costumes, decorated bicycles, and artistic expression.

The fair will also include displays of more than 75 art cars as part of the Seattle Art Car Blow Out, along with a free music lineup featuring local and touring performers on both days.

The Fremont Fair’s Reyka Vodka Music Stage will feature 11 acts over the weekend, including Haley Johnsen, The Grizzled Mighty, Tiny Monsters, The Stronks, Dorsten, and rein.likely on Saturday, followed by Deft Lips, Walter Moses Band, Terra Nobody, Nobi & The Force, and Bexley on Sunday.

Additional events include the annual Dog Parade, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 21 (register here!).

The organizers say parking will be very limited in Fremont, and there is no official parking area. They strongly suggest taking the bus (routes 62, 40, 26, 28, 30, and 31) or biking.

If you drive, do not park in front of driveways, fire hydrants, or crosswalks, as parking enforcement will be on full patrol during the event and will readily ticket and tow vehicles.

In an announcement on social media, representatives from the Ballard Locks say that crews will be working on repairing part of the concrete in the fish ladder viewing area, which has been leaking water onto the floor.

The fish ladder is one of the most popular features at the Ballard Locks, allowing visitors to watch salmon migrate between Puget Sound and Lake Washington while bypassing the locks. The viewing windows provide a close-up look at fish as they move upstream to their spawning grounds.

They say the grounds, including the Locks and the botanical garden, will remain open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The closure comes as salmon migration season begins to pick up. The Locks recently reported the first adult sockeye salmon of the year passing through the ladder, with larger numbers of sockeye, Chinook, coho, and other species typically making their way through the system over the summer months.

Visitors who want to track the migration can also follow the daily salmon counts published by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The online dashboard reports the number of sockeye, Chinook, and coho salmon counted at the Ballard Locks as they return to Lake Washington, with counts updated throughout the migration season. The data offers a way to monitor the run’s progress and see when larger numbers of fish begin moving through the ladder.

The fish ladder viewing area is expected to reopen by 7 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17.

The Corps Foundation made upgrades to the fish ladder viewing area in 2024, when they added new interpretive displays, more seating, better lighting, and a speaking post for park rangers.

“A Storm of Syndicates” will screen at Majestic Bay Theatres on June 18, following its world premiere at the Harmony Gold Theater in Hollywood earlier this year.

According to a press release, the film was six years in the making and grew from a passion project among teenage filmmakers into a production that spanned the United States, Belgium, France, India, and Hungary.

The sci-fi film follows a young recruit whose syndicate is accused of staging a covert strike, forcing him to choose between loyalty and conscience amid a fragile peace between nine syndicates.

Director, writer, and producer James Brammer, founder of Seattle-based Infinia Productions, began working on the project at age 17. During his senior year at Ballard High School, Brammer collaborated with cinematographer Nash Pearson and the Ballard High School Digital Filmmaking Program production crew to film the project. The release states that the production underwent four years of post-production while the filmmakers were attending college.

The film was shot entirely on location in Washington, filmed in locations including Eastern Washington, Lopez Island, the Georgetown Steam Plant, and other sites around the region. The production worked with several organizations during filming, including the Seattle Office of Film, Seattle City Light, the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission, the San Juan Islands National Monument Office, and the Ballard High School PTSA.

The cast includes Kevin Clevenger, David Jofre, Hallie Shepherd, John Fisher, Eric Colley, Kevin Leung, Tobias Yuodelis, Levi Erdman, and Will Shepard.

The score was composed by Timothy Shortell, whose previous credits include work for HBO, Marvel, and Sony Pictures. Portions of the score were performed by the Budapest Scoring Orchestra in Hungary.

The project also highlights the long-running success of Ballard High School’s Digital Filmmaking Program. The program has earned regional recognition over the years, including multiple Northwest Emmy Award nominations for student-produced work, and has served as a launching point for young filmmakers pursuing careers in the industry.

The Seattle premiere is scheduled for June 18 at Majestic Bay Theatres, located at 2044 N.W. Market St.

According to Seattle Parks and Recreation, construction is scheduled to begin June 23 and continue through August 2026. The entire field at 5100 Green Lake Way N will be closed during construction.

The project will replace the existing synthetic turf that was installed in 2013. The work includes removing the old turf, addressing any necessary structural repairs to curbing and subsurface areas, and installing a new synthetic turf system. The replacement will include synthetic turf surfacing over a supplemental resilient pad, along with granular cork and sand infill.

The scope of work also includes installing new turf in the bullpens.

Seattle Parks and Recreation said the field, also known as the Seattle Mariners All-Star Legacy Field, has completed the design phase. D.A. Hogan served as the design consultant, and Field Turf USA is the project contractor.

The department said it will work with the contractor to minimize impacts on nearby roadways and the surrounding neighborhood during construction.

The field closure comes as Seattle Public Schools and Seattle Parks and Recreation continue discussions about future athletic field projects in Woodland Park, including plans for a new athletic field for Lincoln High School. Earlier this spring, officials gathered public feedback on potential field locations within the park.

The Seattle store expands Big Bud Press’s small but growing retail footprint. Before opening in Fremont, the company operated stores in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, and Palm Springs. Its retail locations are concentrated in neighborhoods known for independent businesses and creative communities, including Highland Park and Echo Park in Los Angeles, the Lower East Side in New York, and Wicker Park in Chicago.

The Fremont location marks the brand’s first store in the Pacific Northwest.

The store opening comes at a time of significant change in Fremont, as the block formerly home to Norm’s, Roxy’s, and Backdoor will soon become an 185-unit apartment building.

According to the Seattle Fire Department, dispatchers received 911 calls reporting smoke and flames from a commercial building in the 800 block of N.W. 42nd St. at 5:17 p.m. Engine 18, the closest responding unit, reported seeing a large column of black smoke while approaching the scene and confirmed a working commercial fire upon arrival.

Fire officials said the blaze was wind-driven and escalated quickly. At 5:26 p.m., the response was upgraded to a two-alarm fire, bringing additional units to the scene. Firefighters later shifted to a defensive strategy, retreating from the structure and fighting the fire from outside the building.

The response was upgraded again to a three-alarm fire at 5:36 p.m. as crews worked to contain the flames. Shortly afterward, the roof on the south side of the building collapsed.

Because of the building’s proximity to the Lake Washington Ship Canal, Seattle Fire dispatched Fireboat 1 to assist. The fireboat pumped water directly from the canal and supplied engines and ladder trucks with a continuous water source.

Seattle Fire reported the fire was brought under control by 7:39 p.m., and some responding units were able to return to service.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury and was evaluated by an aid crew. No hospital transport was required.

The department said more than 100 firefighters responded to the incident, along with aid units, medic units, command staff and support personnel.

An Alert Seattle notification was sent to nearby residents and businesses advising them to close doors and windows because of smoke in the area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Seattle Fire said crews would remain on scene overnight to monitor for hot spots and potential flare-ups.

The celebration begins with a Pride Market Walk at 9:15 a.m. Organizers are encouraging attendees to gather at the flags as the market opens. The Ballard High School band is scheduled to lead the walk.

A Drag Showcase will follow from 11 a.m. to noon in Bergen Place, hosted by Sasha Scarlett. Organizers say the event will include musical performances, audience participation, and a raffle featuring prizes donated by market vendors and local businesses. Raffle prizes will be awarded during the showcase.

Seattle’s LGBTQ+ Center will also have a booth at the market throughout the day.

According to organizers, this year’s event marks the fourth annual Pride Celebration Day at the Ballard Farmers Market.

Sunday’s celebration is one of several Pride events planned in Ballard this June. On Saturday, Reuben’s Brews will host its annual Family Pride Fest, and the inaugural Regnbue Pride festival and soccer watch party is happening on June 26

Leslie Rome shared the below video of the beaver, which she said she spotted on the Magnolia side of the locks near the fish ladder.

Beavers are fairly common near Ballard—last year, another reader sent us a video of a beaver cruising down the sidewalk at the locks. That said, usually they’re spotted around Golden Gardens.

In a social media post, co-owners Alex Johnstone and David Rothstein said the decision was “bittersweet” and described the farmers market as “one of Salmonberry’s great loves.”

According to the post, Salmonberry Goods began 12 years ago with Johnstone and Rothstein operating Convoy Coffee bike carts at the corner of Ballard Avenue and Northwest 22nd Street. They said some customers have been with the business since its first day at the market.

The announcement comes as Salmonberry continues to expand other parts of its business. In recent years, the company said it has grown its Salmonberry Farm Box and Essentials home delivery programs and opened Salmonberry Green Grocer at 6405 32nd Ave NW.

While stepping away from the market, Salmonberry said it plans to remain involved as a customer, sourcing produce for its farm box program and ingredients for its bakery offerings.

The company said it also plans to spend more time writing and is working on a newsletter called Almanac.

“The energy we capture from market Sundays has fueled us for so long. Waking up at 2am and watching the light change through the bakery door, baking and bagging hundreds of pastries and loaves, finding inspiration for new recipes, and sharing countless beautiful small moments with so many of you,” Johnstone and Rothstein wrote.

Salmonberry noted that it does not know when it will return to the farmers market, describing the break as open-ended.

“We don’t know when we’ll return to the market, and that’s ok. We’re trusting our hearts and taking a leap,” they wrote.

According to a GoFundMe campaign created following the fire, Sara and Sam Lucchese lost their food production kitchen, many personal belongings, and sustained significant damage to their living space in the June 9 fire. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

The Luccheses are longtime Ballard residents and longtime participants in Seattle-area farmers’ markets through their businesses Vespucci Pizza, Pasteria Lucchese, and La Crespella. The couple also owned Strega Pizzeria, which they recently closed to dedicate more time to their other businesses.

In a message shared Wednesday, the Seattle Farmers Market Association said the fire has put the future of the family’s businesses in jeopardy and encouraged community members to support a GoFundMe campaign established to help with recovery efforts.

According to the fundraiser, donations will be used to replace essential equipment, make repairs needed to restore the commercial kitchen, and address damage to the family’s living space.

“As market-goers, we should step up to support them in this time of need. Your support will help them rebuild and continue sharing their incredible food and spirit with the community,” the GoFundMe says.

As of this writing (Wednesday, June 10), the campaign has raised $6,193 of its $13,000 goal.

Seattle Fire Department investigators said the cause was ruled accidental. Investigators determined the fire was likely caused by a container of hot embers that ignited a pile of wood, which then spread to the exterior and then the interior of the residence.

Seattle Fire estimated the loss at $500,000.

This year’s event will feature live music from Blast Radius and food from Tacos & Beer. Organizers are also hosting a toiletries drive benefiting Labateyah Youth Home and encourage attendees to bring donations. “Every bar of soap, toothbrush, and bottle of shampoo makes a difference,” the organizers said.

According to SPR, the strategy was developed in response to the growing popularity of tennis and pickleball, as well as feedback gathered during an earlier round of public engagement.

The upcoming meetings will present findings from the first phase of outreach and give community members an opportunity to provide additional feedback.

SPR has scheduled four in-person sessions across the city:

• June 23 at 6:30 p.m. — Dakota Place Park Building, 4304 SW Dakota St.
• June 25 at 6:30 p.m. — Mt. Baker Rowing & Sailing Center, 3800 Lake Washington Blvd. S.
• June 27 at 10:30 a.m. — Magnolia Community Center, 2530 34th Ave. W.
• June 30 at 6 p.m. — Loyal Heights Community Center, 2101 NW 77th St.

All meetings are scheduled for 90 minutes, with doors opening 30 minutes before the start time.

The strategy follows ongoing discussions about how Seattle’s park system should accommodate growing demand for both tennis and pickleball courts. Earlier this year, Seattle Parks outlined preliminary concepts that could change the use of some existing courts, including facilities near Ballard. SPR’s draft concepts included converting the four tennis courts at Gilman Playground into dedicated pickleball courts, while adding new tennis courts at Salmon Bay Park and Soundview Playfield. The proposals were presented as part of a broader effort to address growing demand for both sports citywide.

Residents who are unable to attend a meeting in person will be able to review the presentation materials online and participate in a survey through the project engagement hub.

Councilmember Dan Strauss announced the improvement plans in his newsletter, which would affect Shilshole Avenue NW between the Ballard Bridge and NW Market Street.

According to Strauss, he worked with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to secure funding for improvements on the corridor. Planned work includes expanding the shoulder on the southwest side of the street, filling in grooves and potholes, and painting lines better to identify existing driveways, parking areas, and walkways.

Strauss said the changes are intended to improve access and safety for people walking, biking, parking, and driving along the roadway.

Funding for the project comes from the District Project Fund, a transportation funding program Strauss said he helped create several years ago. He said the fund allows councilmembers to identify and address transportation improvements within their districts, and that these projects are the first to receive funding through the program.

Strauss also announced three additional projects that will move forward with funding:

• NW Locks Place from NW 54th Street to NW Market Street: New trees and improvements designed to better define sidewalk and driveway areas and improve separation between vehicles and pedestrians on the existing Burke-Gilman Trail.
• NW 62nd Street and 2nd Avenue NW: Installation of a new traffic circle with landscaping intended to encourage slower vehicle speeds.
• NW 83rd Street and 18th Avenue NW: Installation of a new traffic circle with landscaping intended to encourage slower vehicle speeds.

Strauss said he is continuing to work with community members to identify additional neighborhood transportation needs for future rounds of funding.

The announcement comes shortly after SDOT released updated plans for completing the Burke-Gilman Trail Missing Link along Leary Avenue NW. The city had previously pursued a trail alignment along Shilshole Avenue NW, but years of litigation delayed the project, prompting SDOT to advance the Leary Avenue route to complete the 1.4-mile gap.

The changes affect portions of NW Ballard Way, NW 46th Street, 14th Avenue NW, and 15th Avenue NW.

According to SDOT, the Ballard Blocks area experiences high demand for on-street parking. The agency said the changes are intended to improve parking availability, reduce the amount of time drivers spend searching for parking, support deliveries, and increase access for people with disabilities.

New two-hour paid parking is now in effect Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on portions of NW Ballard Way, NW 46th Street, and 14th Avenue NW. Parking remains free on Sundays and city holidays.

Current parking rates are:

• 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.: $1 per hour
• 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.: $2.50 per hour
• 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.: $2.50 per hour

SDOT said it reviews data in paid parking areas and adjusts rates citywide two to three times per year. The next rate review for the Ballard Blocks area is scheduled for fall 2026.

The project also added new load zones and disabled parking spaces. In addition, some streets received two-hour time-limited parking instead of paid parking.

The agency conducted outreach with area property owners and businesses during fall 2025 and early 2026. SDOT said the outreach included mailers, flyers, door-to-door visits, emails, and one-on-one meetings.

Mike’s Chili Parlor owner Mike Semandiris has voiced frustration over the change.

“As a small business owner who lives [and] works on this street, I have offered numerous ideas to preempt the addition of parking meters,” Semandiris wrote on social media. “For 6 months, my expectation was that SDOT would at least fully consider them. Instead, they’ve move[d] forward with parking meters, which will start the countdown for the end of this small business.”

The changes follow a parking study conducted in spring 2024. According to SDOT, the study found that on-street parking in the area was more than 90% occupied during midday hours, while nearby garages and parking lots still had hundreds of available spaces. The project is one of several transportation and curbspace management efforts underway in Ballard, including SDOT’s work on the Route 40 corridor.

The agency also found that while some streets already had time-limited parking, most blocks had unrestricted parking, allowing vehicles to remain parked for extended periods and making it more difficult for customers and visitors to find available spaces.

SDOT said the project’s goals include making it easier for customers and visitors to find parking, reducing traffic from drivers searching for spaces, improving safety, creating dedicated space for deliveries, and encouraging longer-term visitors and employees to use nearby parking garages and lots.
