Over 50 groups took part in the 2011 Barnsley Mayor’s Parade and for the first time in 13 years, at the request of the town’s Mayor, Cllr Karen Dyson, vehicles and judging returned.

Starting from the County Way car park the parade made it’s way along Regent Street, Eldon Street, Mayday Green, Cheapside, New Street, Wellington Street, Peel Square, Market Hill, Church Street, turning back on to Regent Street and finishing at the lower County Way car park.

This podcast is a short audio guide to some of the many organisations who took part in the Parade.  It features The Chronicle Brass Band, The Antz Band, Barnsley Sea Cadets, The Junk Band, Two blokes in a pedalo (still not sure what they were doing in the show), Experience Barnsley and the town’s Samba Band.

Float Results
The (substance misuse) Recovery Coalition team won the Best Float in the Parade Award which was sponsored by Holiday Inn.

Best Walking Group Award sponsored by Walkabout, Barnsley was won by  The 33rd Salem Rainbows

And there was two winners in the Outstanding Contribution to the Parade. Barnsley YMCA and Barnsley Council Out of Hours Learning sharing the award which was sponsored by Vitesse, Barnsley. .

Cllr Dyson said: “Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who took part in the parade and came to watch it take place. There was a real sense of community and I felt proud to be Barnsley’s first citizen – we really know how to put on a good show!”

If you’ve ever wondered how and why the Cooper Gallery became part of Barnsley history then this podcast goes some of the way to answer your questions.

With over four hundred paintings in the collection , the Revealed project used a number of them to tell the story of the gallery and also as a catalyse to inspire new works by local artists, as well as students from Barnsley College, Joseph Locke Primary School and Barnsley Young Writers Group.

2011 sees the 150th anniversary of the opening of Barnsley Cemetery. Martin Puk from the Friends from the Cemetery group talks about some of the work they do to protect the grounds and graves.

“People & Mining” are a local history group with a coal mining interest. Barry Moore explains about the work they do in local schools and as work is about to begin on The Barnsley Experience, Dr John Tanner, Project Manager for Barnsley Museum reveals more about the plans for the Town Hall.

Rehearsals are about to get underway for the latest production by Barnsleys Lamproom Theatre Company.

Already this years Spring season has seen sell out audiences for Blackadder goes Forth, the TV series adapted for the stage.

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice by Jim Cartwright runs from the 24th of May until 29th 2010 at the Lamproom Theatre on Westgate.

The play follows much of the story from the 1998 film which starred Jane Horrocks, Michael Caine, Ewan McGregor Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn who received an academy award nomination for her performance as best supporting actress.

Auditions took place on Tuesday the 9th of March and to see how the night went for Director Phil Shepherd all you need to do is press play.
