First game of the best of 3 final. CPUT had a slow start to the game, be it nerves, anxiety, not knowing what offensive tactics to expect from Truworths Future Stars. It was a tense start from the Cats camp, but to those who love the game and get lost into feeling it, it was obvious that by the time we hit half time, we had put on our full armour .

It was a close score tie in the first quarter, each team scoring for each basket the other team put in. Future Stars pushed hard on Defence and made it hard for easy basket scores for our ladies. But come the latter part of the 2nd quarter, our offensive upped and baskets were good from penetrations to jumpers, making it more difficult for the Truworths Future Stars team to close in on us as a result.

By the 3rd minute of the 3rd quarter we’d established a 10 point gap which gave way to a stronger offensive on our side. Truworths continued to beat against an even stronger defence from the Cat’s ladies, which attempted to cut off their point guard before crossing the half court, and our point guard scored at least 3 baskets when a trap led to successful steals, growing our confidence even more.

We experienced a couple of penetrations from their side making them, nonetheless, a threat throughout most of the game, but with the final score leveled at 81/51 to the Cat’s ladies, it gave us confidence that we needed only one more game to be champions once again.

As Matthew, our coach, put it, ‘the ladies had come out to play ‘ball’, and having him with us at every step of the game, pushing us, also contributed, not forgetting the support from the ladies on the bench shouting and supporting us, especially when the referees made interesting calls that slowed our roll, but only for a moment. It was all about the best team winning, and Cat’s Ladies Basketball team sure put it out that day.

On my personal game, I was very satisfied with my contribution to the offensive game; finishing off easy lay-ups, finishing up on the fast-breaks, a couple of drives where fouls were called and free throws awarded, a couple of jumpers and also pass assists that ended up in the hoop, made for a great overall feeling. On the team side, we really pulled together on the zone and half-court trap defence, passing to cutters and fast break runners, took us to the final score that left everyone feeling highly satisfied and hyped. We were so ready for the next game that would have us seal the league championship. Final score: CPUT ladies 81 – 51 Future Stars

Game 2 was a forfeit in favor of CPUT, with Future stars coming to the game unprepared and without their player cards and no coach so the game went to CPUT.

CPUT came into game 2 of the 3 game series knowing that they needed to win to give their title aspirations a boost. The game was held at a packed UCT court with half the hall filled with CPUT supporters and half the hall filled with Vikings supporters.

In brief, CPUT started like a house on fire and built a nice little lead, but as the quarters came and went, Vikings got stronger and were the more composed team of the two. CPUT who were the defending champions got tired and without a bench to help out the first unit they ran out of steam and were in foul trouble early…

Looking back at the game, Vikings were much too strong for CPUT in the post and with a 10 point lead going into the fourth quarter, the supporters thought it was all done to get the party going. Unfortunately CPUT were not going to just give their trophy away without a fight and they made a run that saw them tie the game at one point and they even had a few opportunities to take the lead but missed crucial free throw and wrong decisions down the line cost them the game. Final score: Vikings 83 – 82 CPUT

In the ladies section, CPUT ladies took the championship with an easy victory over Future stars in game 1 while game 2 was a forfeit in favour of CPUT. Final score: CPUT 81 – 51 Future Stars

In the first game of a potential 3 game series in the WCBA men finals, The Vikings took control of the series after trading early blows with the CPUT Cats and coming out on top.

Starters: CPUT (6, 9, 15, 4, 13), Vikings (7, 14, 8, 9, 5)

The game started off at a high tempo with both teams exchanging baskets and making plenty of turnovers in the process. In the early exchanges, Vikings 5 had a good offensive game going with great offensive rebounds and assists under the basket. CPUT base their game on the running game and they were running the break at every opportunity and it was working great for them. Vikings had to figure out a way to stop the break so that they could minimize the damage.Despite fact that Vikings were much bigger than CPUT, they were not using this to their advantage during the first half but they had a good rotation going. CPUT had a good tempo on defence with CPUT 12 playing great defence all round with steals left, right and center. But when the half time whistle went, they were within reach of their opponents with CPUT leading 42 – 38.

Whatever Vikings coach (Tim Molteno standing-in for Craig Daniels who just came back from Madagascar) told his players, they came out of the change rooms all fired up for the 3rd quarter. They reduced the deficit in the first 2 minutes of the restart and built a 6 point lead after 4 minutes had passed. The sizeable turnout was going crazy and with 22 seconds left in the quarter Vikings had a 10 point lead. CPUT were struggling to get into any flow and their game looked disorganized with each man playing for himself. As it seems to be the norm all over the country the referees were missing one or two calls here and there but they would be a non factor in this particular tie.

The 4th quarter was all about Vikings number 4 who took control of the game with some crucial plays that kept his team in the lead with a great margin. The 4th quarter was a great spectacle to watch with CPUT trying to make a run on the back of some nice cuts from their guards while the Vikings were trying to put the fixture to bed early. They were fighting for loose balls and being more aggressive. In the end, Vikings had too much ammunition for their opponents and they walked away with it 92 – 75.

Speaking to Vikings stand-in coachTim, after the game, He said that they had done the little things right and that the team that had done the basics better had won. The other thing that they had over their opponents was a deep bench so that gave him more options and kept the players fresh and on their toes.

It was a great game to watch and Game 2 on sunday 1st november will give CPUT a chance to show Cape Town what they are all about or it will give Vikings an opportunity to be crowned 2009 Champions.

In other news, the ladies game 1 was won by CPUT 81 – 51 against Future Stars.

14A 05 – 50

14B 11 – 24DHS were kind enough to change the venue for the fixture that was supposed to take place at DHS, but was unable to due to the weather. The game was always going to be won by the strong DHS team the only question was what the winning margin would be as DHS has in the past few years has won by margins of 100 points or more. However the young Kearsney team were Hungry to prove themselves against the best in the country and earn some respect. The fist quarter saw DHS apply defensive pressure which forced a number of turnovers and enabled them to score freely due to Kearney’s poor passing. The quarter ended with DHS up 17 – 4 as Kearsney struggled to make their scoring opportunities count. Dumisani Gebashe was able to make two shots from outside the three point arc which added to Kearsney’s woes.

The second quarter saw a better performance from Kearsney as they managed to score eight points and hold DHS to scoring only 15. But being down by such a large margin it would always be difficult to come back. However the Kearsney players did not lie down and die they dug deep and fought hard to stay in the game, they upped the level of the defensive intensity and at times cause the DHS players to become extremely frustrated. However the class of the DHS team came through and they weathered the defensive intensity closing out the game 72 – 25. Some credit must go to Kearsney as they played with only grade 11’s and 10’s in the team while DHS was fielding four international age group players (Dumisani Gebashe, Chris Fynn SA U18, Duke Lazarus SA U16 and Moonga Chipili Zambian U18).

Top scorers:

DHS: Dumisani Gebashe 21, Chris Fynn 15, Khulikani Madlala 10, Monde Gama and Moonga Chipili 7.

Kearsney: Wiseman Mbaso and Ian Sprague 6, Mark Astrup and Xolani Msimango 4
