Across the globe, the stereotypical customer at a convenience store is a young man who is not concerned with nutrition or a balanced diet. Family Mart, a prominent Japanese convenience store chain with more than 9,500 outlets, is looking to change that image with the help of creative new dishes featuring U.S. beef.

Price, food safety and product quality are the most important demand drivers on which the beef industry should focus to have the most compelling effects on beef demand in the long term. Other key drivers include health, nutrition, social aspects and sustainability.

So concludes “Beef Demand: Recent Determinants and Future Drivers,” a newly released study commissioned by the Beef Checkoff Program to summarize the current knowledge of consumer demand for beef and identify the best opportunities for the industry to influence demand positively.

You hear los of different claims about the cattle industry and the environment these days, but when it comes down to it, the Beef Checkoff Program sticks to scientific facts to tell the real story. AND THE FACT IS THIS: The United States cattle industry continues to be a model for the rest of the world in terms of greenhouse gas mitigation. According to the EPA, beef production accounts for only 2.8% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, compared to 26% for transportation. Learn more about Everyday Environmentalists at www.ExploreBeef.org.

The National Beef Ambassador team recently helped consumers celebrate lean beef at the National Harbor Wine and Food Festival in the Washington, D.C. area. As part of the checkoff’s Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative, three ambassadors helped serve more than 7,000 beef samples and encouraged consumers to “Tweet for a Treat” and play the “Pin the Cut on the Cow” game. The beef booth at the festival was a huge hit with the more than 10,000 folks attending the festival. Checkoff Executive Chef Dave Zino also demonstrated the versatility of top sirloin to create a festive spring salad on the prominent Viking Cooking Stage.

In a state/national partnership, the beef checkoff participated in seven state dietetic association meetings in the heavily populated Northeast Corridor. In Massachusetts, checkoff representatives manned the beef booth and provided information about the power of lean beef to more than 400 registered dietitians. Other state dietetic meetings covered were in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Delaware, with participation ranging from 75 to 400 dietitians at each. As an extension of the National Nutrition Seminar Program, the beef checkoff also sponsored six speakers at the state meetings. Planning is under way for participation in the Maine Dietetic Association meeting in November.
