One day, a company’s machine suddenly broke down and the owner who was an old friend of Niels Bohr called him to get it fixed.

Mr Bohr takes a look at the machine, draws an “X” on the side of the machine and says to the company’s mechanic, “Hit it right here with a hammer.”

So the mechanic strikes the X on the side of the machine, and the machine sprung to life! The owner was very grateful for Mr Bohr. He generously thanked him then sent him on his way.

Akamas National Park is located on the western tip of Cyprus and covers an area of about 230 km² of precious ecological significance and gladly unharmed by mass development. This makes the potential in the Israeli startup market very lucrative.

Who Can Invest?

Equity crowdfunding is brand new investing area which has cause legal gray areas and uncertainty for investors. Additionally, the risk associated with these investments has caused regulators to restrict the opportunity for investment to only the very wealthy. Currently, the equity crowdfunding marketplace is only open to investors that are considered accredited, which in the United States means having an income of over $200,000 per year, or, over $1 million in net assets excluding the primary residence of an investor. This severely limits who can invest in these early stage companies. An Australian spent a couple of years as an expatriate and later a business owner in Lagos, Nigerian commercial capital and wrote a book on her experience and titled Gibbous Moon Over Lagos. In summary, the book is about the highs and lows of living and doing business in Lagos, Nigeria.

Conclusion

Majority of Israeli companies do not have Africa in mind when they set out to expand abroad but the perception changes quickly for those that take the plunge. They have success stories.

I wish to borrow these words from Amit Levi, the Head of Israel's Economic Mission to South Africa: ''You have to treat Africa in general as a long-term investment. Once you manage to settle here and create a good reputation that is something that will serve you in the long run."

Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa and is on the move. It is the best gateway to the West African regional market of over 400 million people.

A Breadth of Fresh Air!

The management of information has long been regarded as the domain of librarians as experts in information searching, selecting, acquiring, organising, preserving, repackaging, disseminating and serving information, however, advances in technology provide libraries in the 21^st century with fresh responsibilities to be learning and knowledge centres where people and ideas interact in both the real and virtual environment to expand learning and facilitate the creation and implementation of new knowledge.

Just as the business world is changing in the new knowledge economy amid the digital age, libraries of all types are also undergoing drastic changes. While it is true that advances in technology have thrown up awesome information services such as Google and the gradual shift to libraries without walls, modern day brick and mortar libraries in cosmopolitan smart driven cities have been positioned to offer a range of services that include e-books, cosy reading rooms, courtyards, lounges, internet services, meeting places and enterprise hubs amongst others. In this new culture of shared knowledge, libraries have turned into a generator of value.

Herbert Macaulay Library situated within Yaba area of Lagos State provides a breadth of fresh air having being transformed from a mere storehouse of books (most times outdated and stacked on dusty shelves) into a community place made up of a diverse interlocking series of spaces for study, casual reading, interaction, collaboration, IT support services, café environment, lounge, outdoor terrace and garden.

This has been made possible by the management of Guaranty Trust Bank’s (GTB) in response to the state government’s requests for adoption of libraries. The relevance of this public private partnership cannot be overemphasized. The government in its wisdom understands the need for places within communities where knowledge can be offered without obligation, where people can meet by arrangement or informally bump into neighbours or visitors from out of town. The insight of the government met with the desire of the bank to bring back the books.

Lagos as a megacity has become a magnet for local and international companies looking to do business because of its sizeable market. Also, it has the pull effect of attracting talents and very educated persons looking for decent living in a smart city environment. Cities collect skills and provide a physical platform for them to be recombined into new and productive forms. Cities are not just containers of smart people; they have the enabling infrastructure where connections take place, networks are built and innovative combinations are consummated.

As a matter of fact, cities are assuming greater importance in today’s knowledge driven, innovation economy where place based ecosystem are critical to economic growth. According to a report by McKinsey Global Institute (2011), companies now seek to ask which cities and where will offer the most promising prospects for each of their businesses and how they can best position themselves to capture these market opportunities through their activities and relationships.

Lagos has been described as one of Africa’s economic and demographic powerhouses, attracting the best talents to its locale. The choice of Yaba for the library redevelopment may not be far-fetched. In an article published by Africa Strictly Business, Reuters was quoted as having described Yaba as a part of Nigeria’s sprawling commercial capital; a cacophony of car horns and shouting street vendors, mingling with exhaust fumes and the occasional stench of sewage. Nevertheless, in between the run-down buildings in this seemingly inauspicious part of Lagos, a city of about 21 million people, technology start-ups are taking root and creating a buzz that is drawing international venture capitalists and more established digital firms into the cluster. It is hoped that the location of University of Lagos and Yaba College of Technology in proximity would enhance the capacity of the community to innovate.

The premise of this article is to highlight the support that intervention, such as by the GTB, brings to a community. Just few metres away from the Hebert Macaulay Library lies the Lagos Mainland Library in dilapidated building. Frankly speaking, it is an eye sore! This library when adopted by GTB or another corporate organisation can complement the services provided by Herbert Macaulay Library by carving a niche around its facility for instance, providing children library services. This would become a draw for parents looking for shared services in close quarters.

Let this article be a clarion call therefore to corporate bodies interested in developing the minds of Lagos residents to support the government by adopting this library. The Herbert Macaulay library redevelopment partnership is a clear case of government not being able to do it all alone. Government needs partners! It cannot be said enough that Lagos Mainland Library needs a puff of fresh air. Give it a life!

The Buhari administration has identified agriculture as one of the sectors of the economy that need re-jigging with a view to making Nigeria self sufficient in food production.

Like the administrators of the country, we believe that agriculture should move from its present level of subsistence to a level where modern techniques and technologies are employed in its practice, particularly in an environment as this where agriculture is the major occupation of the people, especially the Women and Youth. To this end, we are proposing an agriculture and agribusiness masterclass that would comprise of One Day of practical training sessions of lectures, presentations by multimedia and demonstrations by an Israeli expert.

The choice of an Israeli resource person cannot be overemphasized. Agriculture in Israel is the success story of a long, hard struggle against adverse conditions and of making maximum use of arable land and scarce water.

Its success lies in the determination and ingenuity of farmers and scientists who have dedicated themselves to developing a flourishing agriculture. The close cooperation between R&D and industry led to the development of a market-oriented agribusiness that exports agro-technology solutions worldwide. A good lesson to countries, including Nigeria, in dire need of solutions in their war against hunger, diseases, morbidity and mortality!

The first phase of the masterclass would hold in three cities viz: Lagos, Kaduna and Enugu.

Showcase Seminar, Brazil Business Mission Possible!

*Showcase Brazil seminar was hosted, March 25, by Infoplus Business as it collaborates with Nigeria Brazil Centre for Business to raise awareness of Nigerians on the possibility for expanded business relationship with the people of Brazil.

Though Brazil shares some elements of culture, ecology and demography with Nigeria, its advancement in science and technology has become a requirement for Nigeria as it transforms its economy’. While Nigeria belongs to the MINT countries, Brazil as a member of the BRICS provides a guiding light to Nigeria as it develops its infrastructure and rejig its economy.

Nigeria can learn a couple of lessons from Brazil’s agriculture and agribusiness, affordable housing provision and financing, Information Technology and Software Publishing for the Oil and Gas sector and financial service. To effectively position Nigeria among the MINT countries and the comity of nations, sources of energy other than fossil fuels should be harnessed. Brazil offers a lead in this direction.

The growth in the Nigerian middle class and the attendant improvement in quality of life have seen the rise in retail franchising in the country. Brazil is a good destination for beauty supplies, fashion and wellness products. The expansion in shopping mall development in the country is an additional incentive for the discerning in Nigerian cities, with its thriving middle class population with good disposable income.

We have proposed to lead a business mission to three cities in Brazil, June 1-7. Participants would have the opportunities for business and social networking, company visits and travel. In the course of the Mission, participants would be assisted to engage Brazilian business people for partnerships, strategic alliances or to serve as agents and distributors of products and services in Nigeria.

Infoplus Business Services (IBG Nigeria) in collaboration with Nigeria Brazil Centre for Business plan a business mission to four cities in Brazil namely Rio de Janeiro, Porto Allegre, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo for May 24-31, 2015.

The choice of Brazil is timely as Nigeria grapples with the reality of falling oil price, rising unemployment and increasing rate of poverty and as the Federal Government continues in its efforts to re-jig its key sectors especially agriculture, a country like Brazil comes in handy.

Brazil has been nicknamed the food basket of the world and has earned global recognition as a result of its agricultural technology for tropical weather, heavy investment in innovation and sophisticated service industry among others that qualified its membership in the BRICS countries. Its model of sustainable development based on robust economic growth with income distribution, social inclusion and job creation has transformed the country into an economic powerhouse with a forecast by the World Bank to become the fifth largest economy in the world.

Brazil's success in agriculture and agribusiness, its premiership in deep sea oil drilling technology, its capacity and creativity in information technology and software services, affordable housing program, robust market for retail franchising in clothing and cosmetics are good reasons to join the trade mission to Brazil this year. These sectors form the areas of focus for the business mission. It provides an opportunity for discerning Nigerian business people interested in developing joint venture partnerships in retail business, economic housing development, agribusiness, and for those looking to take advantage of the local content policy in the oil and gas sector to develop technical and strategic alliances etc. Women entrepreneurs are encouraged to attend.

On the opening day at Rio de Janeiro, the president of Rio de Janeiro Industrial Federation (FIRJAN) would deliver a speech on Brazil's action plans for Nigerian market. A group discussion on unlocking the opportunities in Brazil for the Nigerian market will follow. On the same day, there would be conference papers to be presented on ‘Sustaining the principles of international trade, the Nigerian market, and its challenges, way forward for Brazilian investors'.

Other papers to be presented on the day include Opportunities in Technology for Oil and Gas, Innovation and Development in the Brazilian Equipment and Information Technology Industry and lastly, ‘Facilities for Import and Export-Funding projects in Nigeria'. Business to business matching would be arranged for participants while in-company visits would be organized on the second and third day to Porto Alegre and Minas Gerais respectively.

Dignitaries expected at the four-day event include the Nigerian Ambassador to Brazil, HE Adamu Emezozo, the President, Rio de Janeiro Industrial Federation, the President, Apex Brazil (the Brazilian Investment and Export Promotion Council), the President, Cotrijal-Expodireto (Agriculture and Agro Allied), and the Managing Director, Softex, an oil and gas company, BNDES (the Brazilian Import Export Bank), Petrobras, Brazilian Association of Franchising amongst others.

To precede the mission to Brazil, a seminar will be held on our ‘Open for Business' series tagged Showcase Brazil slated for March 25, 2015 at the Resource Place, Ikeja, Lagos. The seminar highlights the economy, travel and culture of the people of Brazil.
