Introducing Cinnamon for Linux Mint

With Gnome 2 no longer an option we lost one of the most important upstream components our Linux Mint desktop was based on. Our entire focus shifted from innovating on the desktop, to patching existing alternatives such as Gnome Shell. We used MATE and MGSE to provide an easier transition away from Gnome 2, but without being able to truly offer an alternative that was better than Gnome 2. Both MATE and Gnome Shell are promising projects but MATE’s ultimate goal is to replicate Gnome 2 using GTK+ and Gnome Shell doesn’t provide what we need in a desktop and is going in a direction we do not want to follow. So for these reasons we’re designing a new desktop called Cinnamon, which leverages new technology and implements our vision.

Under the hood Cinnamon is forked from Gnome Shell and based on Mutter and Gnome 3. It’s already available for Linux Mint 12, Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 16, OpenSUSE 12.1 and Arch Linux and will soon make its way (along with MGSE and MATE) to LMDE when Gnome 3.2 enters Debian Testing.
The latest release, Cinnamon 1.1.3, brings stability and improvements to what has already become our favorite desktop. Going forward, Cinnamon will gain themes, extensions and a control center. It will likely replace Gnome Shell / MGSE as the main desktop in Linux Mint, and we will continue to support MATE (which goal and technology are different but which is also getting better and better by the day).
A few cool things already in Cinnamon

One unique bottom panel which you can auto-hide (and which location will be configurable in the future)
Window list, “show desktop” button, systray icons and all the features introduced in MGSE
A menu featuring the same layout as mintMenu, with options to add applications to favorites, to the desktop or to the panel

How to install ubuntu software center on linux mint 12

Gnome shell tips for linux mint 12 users

GNOME Shell is the defining technology of the GNOME 3 user experience. It provides core interface functions like switching to windows and launching applications. Restart Gnome shell

If you want to restart Gnome shell use the following procedure

    Press "Alt F2" and Type "r"

   Finally Press "Enter"

Debug Gnome Shell

If you want to debug Gnome Shell or run it from the console

    Switch to the console using "Ctrl Alt F1"

    Type "w" to find your display (usually it's :0.0)

    Export your display (usually with "export DISPLAY=:0.0")

    Restart gnome shell from the console by typing "gnome-shell --replace"

    Go back to your display using "Ctrl Alt F7"

Run Gnome Shell in Virtualbox

Linux Mint 12 comes with the Virtualbox guest additions pre-installed, so it's possible to run the live session with Gnome Shell and MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions).

Make sure to configure your virtual machine as follows:

    Go to Machine->Settings->Display
    Give the virtual machine as much Memory Video as possible.
    Tick the checkbox "Enable 3D Acceleration"

Without 3D acceleration your virtual session will run in Fallback mode. If your settings are correct it will run with Gnome Shell and MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions).

How to Switch to a single top panel in Linux mint 12

By default, Linux Mint 12 features a top and a bottom panel as shown in this screen

If you're used to a single top panel, you can remove the bottom panel and have the menu and window list placed at the top:

First, disable the bottom panel:

    From the menu, launch the "Advanced Settings" tool
    Select "Shell Extensions"
    Find "Bottom Panel Extension" and disable it

Then, restart Gnome Shell, for the menu and window list to reload:

    Press "Alt F2"
    Type "r" and press "Enter"

After changes you should see similar to the following screen

Nagwin is a packaging of Nagios and related tools for Windows systems. You can use it to monitor your IT-infrastructure Nagios-way from Windows.

Nagwin consists of following components:

    Nagios is a powerful monitoring system that enables organizations to identify and resolve IT infrastructure problems before they affect critical business processes. Nagios monitors your entire IT infrastructure to ensure systems, applications, services, and business processes are functioning properly. In the event of a failure, Nagios can alert technical staff of the problem, allowing them to begin remediation processes before outages affect business processes, end-users, or customers.
    Nginx (pronounced “engine-x”) is a lightweight, high-performance Web server. Nginx quickly delivers static content with efficient use of system resources. It can deploy dynamic HTTP content on a network using FastCGI handlers.
    Php is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML.
    Cygwin is a Linux-like environment for Windows. It consists of a DLL (cygwin1.dll), which emulates substantial Linux API functionality, and a collection of tools.

    As Nginx does only support FastCGI, a custom FastCGI wrapper is included to serve Nagios web interface CGIs

Install Nagwin in windows

Supported platforms : Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7.

Nagwin comes as a ZIP file containing an installer. Simply unzip your downloaded copy and run the package "Nagios_x.x.x_Installer.exe" :

        Accept License agreement.
        Specify an installation location.
        Specify a service account.
        Installation starts. By clicking 'Details' button, you can get more detailed information about installation. Check if everything seems ok.

At the end of the installation, Nagwin gives you some information about how to start. Simply start Nagwin services and point your browser to http://localhost.

Nagwin uses Nginx as web backend with PHP in FastCGI mode. As Nginx doesn't support CGI, a FastCGI wrapper is developed to serve Nagios CGIs.
Uninstallation

This one is easy too:

    Choose Uninstall Nagwin from Start menu. Again, you can monitor uninstallation process by clicking 'Details' button.

Disable Guest account in ubuntu 11.10(Oneiric)

Ubuntu 11.10 now ships with the guest account available at the LightDM login screen.

This new feature isn't really a security issue, since by default using it requires physical access, and it is confined with an AppArmor profile. If an

attacker has physical access to your laptop, all bets are off.

The guest account can be disabled by editing /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and adding "allow-guest=false" to the "SeatDefaults" section.

How to Getting back to Classic Gnome in ubuntu 11.10

It is fairly easy to get back to the 'classic' gnome desktop as opposed to Unity.

You can just run this in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

Reboot and then select "Gnome Classic" on the login screen.

Solution

To fix your problem with Eclipse in 11.10, you need to modify the /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc file. In the gtk-color-scheme string at the very top of the file, change the tooltip_bg_color and selected_fg_color entries and add a tooltip_fg_color entry.

One last testing release, mainly because upstream had a lot of updates that I decided to take advantage of so we are not old before we are new. Software updates include Firefox to version 7.0.1, Cairo-Dock to 2.4.0, Mesa to 7.10.2 and updates to all the latest X.Org drivers. Those of you using Intel, NVIDIA or ATI graphics are encouraged to try a few games now with the supplied open-source drivers - you might be pleasantly surprised. We squashed a few bugs from the 2.1 release and are looking forward to a dynamic final release following testing of this last RC.

Superb Mini Server 1.6.2 (Linux Distribution)

Superb Mini Server (SMS) is a Slackware-based server distribution with web, DNS, DHCP, file, print and fax servers, iptables firewall, mail server with spam filter and anti-virus scanner, and BitTorrent station. It also includes Webmin, a web-based administration tool, but no graphical desktop. SMS, which comes with Slackware's text-mode system installer, is built using Linux-Live scripts (from Slax) and can be used as a live CD for testing purposes.

Superb Mini Server version 1.6.2 released (Linux kernel 2.6.39.3). SMS 1.6.2 brings updates, security patches and the latest stable packages, such as httpd 2.2.21, PHP 5.3.8, Perl 5.14.2, BIND 9.8.1, Postfix 2.8.5, ClamAV 0.97.2, Dovecot 2.0.15, MailScanner 4.84.3 and, last but not least, Samba 3.6.0 with SMB2 support. Samba's 'Security = share' is deprecated and will not work with SMB2, although it is set in smb.conf, but it's enough to get you started - look at SMS wiki on how to switch to 'Security = User'. Also 'client ntlmv2 auth yes' is set by default. Dovecot needs your attention, since many deprecated options have been removed. SMS 1.6.2 features smbldap-tools, a set of Perl scripts designed to manage user and group accounts stored in an LDAP directory, making Samba and OpenLDAP configuration easier

The Fedora Project is an openly-developed project designed by Red Hat, open for general participation, led by a meritocracy, following a set of project objectives. The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from open source software. CustomURL - Registering custom URL protocols on windows machine

CustomURL is a small utility for registering custom URL protocols. You can for example associate the rdp:// protocol with Remote Desktop Client or the ssh:// protocol with Putty or another SSH client.

CustomURL allows you to run any EXE file from a html page. This can be very useful for business application that combine a web interface with locally installed applications.

Installation / Usage

Download CustomURL.exe from and save it to the System32 folder in you windows directory. To configure URL protocols execute CustomURL.exe by double-clicking in windows explorer or type CustomURL in the "Run" dialog in the start meny.

Security considerations

This tool uses the .Net 2.0 System.Uri class to parse and extract parts of the URL. No extra validation is done on the extracted URL parts. For security reasons only the host, port and user information is extracted, any query parts of the URL will be ignored.

If you delete your lubuntu panel by mistake you can restore this using the following commands

Open the terminal and run the following commands

sudo cp /usr/share/lxpanel/profile/Lubuntu/panels/panel ~/.config/lxpanel/Lubuntu/panels

Change owner:group to the local account from root.

sudo chown owner:group ~/.config/lxpanel/Lubuntu/panels/panel

lxpanelctl restart

Delprof2 is the inofficial successor to Microsoft’s Delprof which does not work with operating systems newer than Windows XP. Here are the main facts:

    Delprof2 is free to use, commercially or otherwise
    Delprof2 is syntax compatible to the original Delprof, but more powerful
    Delprof2 bypasses file system security to delete profiles regardless of current permissions/owner (requires backup/restore privileges)
    Delprof2 supports very long paths (longer than 260 characters)

Delprof2 deletes inactive user profiles. If you want to reclaim disk space just run it without parameters and it will delete all profiles except your own and some special profiles needed by the operating system (like “Default”).

Delprof2 has additional filtering options: you might want to delete locally cached copies of roaming profiles only or delete only those profiles that have not been used in a specified number of days. Delprof2 does it all, both on the local system and remotely.

Bypassing Security

User profiles often have permissions set on them in such a way that not even administrators have access without prior ACL manipulation. Delprof2 circumvents this requirement by making use of backup and restore privileges to analyze and delete even the most tightly secured profiles.
Long Paths

Some programs store files in paths with more than 260 characters. Most tools cannot deal with such paths that are longer than the value of MAX_PATH (260). Windows Explorer is a prominent example. Delprof2, on the other hand, makes use of special APIs to be able to delete files in the remotest areas of your hard drive.

Delprof2 deletes inactive Windows user profiles (profiles that are not currently loaded).

   too (and XP/2003/Vista/2008/2008 R2).
If possible, Delprof2 uses the backup and restore privileges to bypass security and delete even profiles the
   executing user does not normally have access to.
Delprof2 has no problem whatsoever deleting files in very long paths (longer than MAX_PATH, 260 characters).
Delprof2 also cleans up stale ProfileList SID.bak registry entires, a common cause of temporary profiles.

Usage: delprof2 [/u] [/q] [/i] [/p] [/r] [/c:[\\]<computername>] [/d:<days>]

       /u   Unattended (no confirmation)
       /q   Quiet (no output and no confirmation)
       /i   Ignore errors, continue deleting
       /p   Prompt for confirmation before deleting each profile
       /r   Delete local caches of roaming profiles only, not local profiles
       /c   Delete on remote computer instead of local machine
       /d   Delete only profiles not used in x days
       /l   List only, do not delete (what-if mode)

Examples:

Delprof2 /c:computername

       Deletes inactive profiles on 'computername'.

Delprof2 /c:computername /l

       Lists inactive profiles on 'computername' without deleting them.

Delprof2 /d:30

       Deletes profiles older than 30 days on the local computer.

Delprof2 /r

       Deletes locally cached roaming profiles only.
