Still, if you’re a Murray fan, you have to enjoy his deliciously nasty portrayal of the world’s meanest TV executive, who has his cathartic moment one cold Christmas night in New York City. The various ghosts lead him on a ghost-town tour of Manhattan, with stops at holidays past, present, and future and a Kumbaya moment when Al Green and Annie Lennox sing “Put a Little Love in Your Heart.” The effects are otherworldly, but one wishes the writing were as sharp as Murray’s edgy portrayal. –Marshall Fine

Pimentel finds a new path in life when he starts a career finding jobs for his fellow vets–and forms a deep friendship with Art Honeyman (Michael Sheen, The Queen), a brilliant man whose body is twisted by cerebral palsy. Pimentel never loses his sardonic sense of humor, but he does find a genuine purpose in life when the U.S. government hires him to create a program to help employers hire the disabled–but his cause leads him away from his increasingly frustrated girlfriend (Melissa George, 30 Days of Night). Music Within proves to be a to be a garrulous, enjoyable warts-and-all biography, one that admires Pimentel’s accomplishments but never loses sight of his human failings. No one gets turned into the representative of a suffering group; every character is well-drawn individual. Sharp supporting turns by Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman), Yul Vazquez (American Gangster), and especially Rebecca De Mornay (Risky Business), as Pimentel’s schizophrenic mother, give Music Within added punch. –Bret Fetzer

Connoisseurs of bad movies rank this execration as an all-time favorite, rivaling Ed Wood’s infamous Plan 9 from Outer Space as the worst film of all time. The trouble began in the early 1950s when a film called Madmen of Mandoras was shot and shelved for no mysterious reason at all. The film boasted the great cinematographer, Stanley Cortez (The Magnificent Ambersons), whose gorgeously evocative photography makes a startling contrast to the inexplicable plot with which it seems to coexist. But that wasn’t bad enough, so in the early 1960s some UCLA film students shot additional footage, somewhat differently styled (think Mod Squad meets cinéma vérité porno), and intercut it with the original film as if the two were meant for each other. The resultant jumble concerns a pair of modish CID agents on the trail of a kidnapped scientist, Nerve Gas-G, an antidote, the resurgence of the Fourth Reich on the Caribbean island of Mandoras, and Hitler’s severed head barking orders from a jar. Here are but a few of the absurdities awaiting you: The swastika is backward, one obtuse character has to pull the car over to discover that her partner was shot even though she was present at the event, and when Hitler’s head bites the big one, it melts. Critic J. Hoberman, in his seminal article, Bad Movies, observed that this film fairly makes the brain explode with ideas. Not only that, but aneurysms. You’ll be screaming, “Mein Kopf! Mein Kopf!” just as Hitler’s head should have, if only there had been the budget for that. –Jim Gay

That’s the Hulk’s problem: After accidental exposure to gamma radiation, scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) turns into the huge, green, and indestructible Hulk when provoked, and repressed childhood memories fuel his fury. Hobbled by the obligatory “origin story” (to acquaint neophytes with the character’s Jekyll-and-Hyde-ish fate), there’s room for little else in a sluggish film that struggles to reconcile Lee’s stylistic flair (evident in his visual interpretation of comic-book technique) with the razzle-dazzle of a megabudget franchise. What’s good is good (Jennifer Connelly essentially echoes her role from A Beautiful Mind, and Nick Nolte is righteously tormented as Banner’s father), but the movie’s schizoid intentions remain largely unclear. –Jeff Shannon

The well-designed tracks will challenge even veterans of the earlier Jet Moto titles. You will feel the cycle slipping on the ice of the Khumbu Icefall and develop a lump in your stomach as you jump over Devil’s Canyon. On the down side, close-up views are difficult to manage, as the field of vision can easily be lost. This is especially a problem in the two-player, split-screen view.

While some gamers may grow tired of this game fairly quickly, there is enough meat here to keep racing fans interested until the courses are mastered. Learning the subtleties of each course can prepare hard-core racers for the game’s more advanced seasonal competitions and racing circuits. –Sal Barcia

But in fact it stars George Clooney as an investigative columnist for a New York newspaper and Michelle Pfeiffer as an architect. Both single parents, the two meet and bicker and develop a relationship over the course of a day while their young children play together. Michael Hoffman (Restoration) directs with a good sense of what’s funny about harried caretakers and kids who do whatever they want to do. The story stretches out of shape a bit when Clooney’s character has to rally to prove some point of corruption at City Hall; nobody involved seems quite up to making that subplot believable, but all that really matters about this very nice movie is the winning love story. –Tom Keogh

Intense, suspenseful, and terrifying, Pulse 2 will frighten you straight through to its shocking ending.The presence of Battlestar Galactica‘s Jamie Bamber is the main selling point of Pulse 2: Afterlife, a direct-to-DVD sequel to 2006′s Pulse, which was itself a remake of the popular Japanese horror film Kairo. Set in a macabre future world where the ghosts of the first film–which wreak havoc on the living via phone lines and computer connections–have now taken control of whole cities, Bamber stars as a father in search of his missing daughter, who may have disappeared into one of the spirit-plagued metropolises. With such an intriguing premise, it’s a disappointment to watch it unfold so ploddingly in the hands of Joel Soisson, a director/producer who’s made a name for himself by releasing unwarranted sequels to horror movies (White Noise 2, Mimic 2, Dracula 3: Ascension). The effort is further muddied by some atrocious green screen effects that betray their artifice immediately upon viewing. Ultimately, Pulse 2 is an unnecessary sequel that neither improves upon its predecessor nor inspires interest in a follow-up–which is already in the works, as indicated in the supplemental features. Soisson and his production team are featured on a lively if inconsequential commentary track; a pair of deleted scenes highlight the pervasive nature of the film’s green-screen effects. –Paul Gaita
