Most Everett Incumbents Get Free Pass in Fall Election

Everett seems pretty happy with its incumbents

It looks like folks in Everett are pretty content with how the city is being run. Based on filing for office in this fall’s election, Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson, City Councilman Paul Roberts and City Councilman Jeff Moore are all unopposed. Scott Murphy, who was appointed to the City Council in January of this year, will face a challenge from Jackie Minchew. Both district court judge positions and the Port of Everett Director position also have just one person whose filed for office meaning they get a free pass unless a write in candidate comes forward.

After 8 Hour Standoff, Trapped Burglar Who Claimed Grenade Taken Into Custody

A SWAT team moves to the back door of the house.

It began as a burglary call until officers found a suspect inside who claimed to have a grenade

It ended with a suspect in custody

“This is the police. We’re not going anywhere, so come out with your hands up.” That was the refrain repeated for 8 hours after a sharp-eyed neighbor saw a man breaking into a house in the 3800 block of Wetmore Avenue Friday afternoon. At about 1:45pm a man called police and said he thought his neighbor’s house was being broken into. Aaron Snell with Everett Police says as officers arrived at the location, a male exited the house but immediately went back inside when he saw officers. The male refused to exit the house. After numerous requests for the male to exit, officers entered and searched the residence. After about 25 minutes of searching, verbal contact was made with the male while he hid in the attic. The male told officers he had a grenade and was willing to use it. Officers vacated and secured the house.

Everett Police then activated their SWAT team and were joined by a SWAT team from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. Two different armored vehicles responded to the scene as well as a bomb technician and the Department of Emergency Management Command Vehicle. As day turned into night at least six SWAT Officers and a K-9 unit entered the house and finally brought the suspect out around 10pm. Snell says the suspect is a 41-year-old from Lake Stevens. He was to be booked into the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of burglary at the time of this writing.

Suspected Burglar in Standoff With Everett Police

A suspect in a burglary in the 3800 block of Wetmore claims to have a grenade and won’t come out of the house he broke into. SWAT teams are here. More pictures will be posted after the incident is ended. I will provide updates on the MyEverettNews Twwitter account.

Update: 10:45am 5/17 – Panera Bread Open in Everett With Approx. 50 Employees

The new Panera Bread store is on the corner of 3rd SE and Everett Mall Way

Well the P.R. Department at Panera Bread wasn’t forthcoming with a lot of details today but did say that the Panera Bread store at the corner of Everett Mall Way and 3rd Ave. SE will open Friday morning. I asked how many people were employed and why they chose Everett but got no response. One thing is obvious, more tasty food and more jobs are a good thing for Everett.

Lots of Damage, Few Injuries, From Thursday Afternoon Crash

No major injuries but lots of damage after an SUV and a Hyundai collided on 75th street near the water tower. No particulars as Everett Police were still investigating the crash which occurred around 3:00pm Thursday. 75th street was closed for about 45 minutes.

3 Days Into Filing and All Everett Candidates Unopposed

Will anyone challenge the incumbents in Everett?

So far every position on the fall ballot in the City of Everett is unopposed. The incumbents for Everett Mayor, City Council and one municipal judge position are unchallenged. The other judge position and Port Commissioner so far also just have one name on the ballot. The online filing period ends at 4:00pm on Friday.
