Are you struggling to come up with some vacation ideas with kids? The school year is almost finished and it is time to start thinking about your summer plans for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and all other days in between.  

Your plans should include getting to new places and turn off the the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Disney Channel, and Netflix for a while (although I do like to binge watch like anyone else).  Planning a vacation with the kids can be stressful but it doesn’t have to be, when you have a list of the best places to vacation with kids.

Most families have heard of vacationing in Disney, Hawaii or Florida. However, we’ve put a list of places that you might not have considered. Let’s get started on some vacation ideas with kids!

Anchorage, Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula

Anywhere in Alaska will surely be a treat for your whole family.  Sure, it may not be known for amusement parks but the great outdoors  is where it is at.  From stunning views, to beautiful wildlife, great seafood, and plenty of midnight sun, you kids will be talking about this majestic place for quite awhile. Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Did you know that Wisconsin Dells is the Waterpark Capital of the World?  You betcha!  Don’t worry, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor water parks so if the weather is less than perfect it won’t ruin your plans.

Even the hotels have water parks so you don’t have to venture too far and won’t miss out on the fun.  Plus the town of Wis. Dells is loads of fun for those who like to shop.  Fudge shops, salt water taffy, lots of gift shops, and take a ride on the “Ducks” and view Lake Delton like the ducks do.  Click here to check out the family-friendly hotels in The Dells.

Breckenridge, Colorado and surrounding areas

Our family vacation to Colorado last summer was a great success with our kids.  Breckenridge has great summer activities on Peak 8 like a slide on rails, bungee jump, obstacle course, and more.  The best part is the Gondola ride to the top of Peak 8.  

Not too far from Breckenridge you can ride the rapids on the Arkansas River or visit some old ghost towns.  Golden, CO also has Heritage Square which was a huge hit with our kids.  It has rides for all ages like bumper boats, go-carts, kiddie rides, arcade, and so much more.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Believe it or not, Vegas isn’t just for adults.  There are plenty of fun and exciting things to do for the whole family.  Check out the numerous shows like Cirque du Soleil or a magic show by Penn & Teller. 

Strolling through the mega themed hotels is always a treat. Circus Circus is definitely a must stop to experience rides and attractions for most ages (36 inches and higher).  From junior rides to coaster rides, it will fill a provide a whole afternoon of fun.  

New York New York has a fun roller coaster that whips around outside near the strip, or munch on some New York style pizza or take a bite out of a Nathan’s hot dog.  The Venetian will even amaze a native Italian.  Take a gondola ride down the Grand Canal and soak in the views on this beautiful hotel and shops. 

If your legs are too tired, hop on the Fremont Street shuttle and check out the street performers, classic hotels, and of course the canopy of lights.

Austin and San Antonio, Texas 

The Lone Star state has plenty to offer to keep the family busy.  Start off in corky Austin and visit the SoCo (South Congress Ave) where the shops and food carts will keep your curiosity going for blocks.  

History buffs can make a stop at the Lyndon B Johnson Library (which is more of a museum than library) and find out what this President accomplished over 50 years ago.  If you prefer the outdoors, try kayaking on the Colorado River.  

At sunset you can watch the largest urban bat colony, over 1.5 million bats, make their way out from under the bridge to catch their evening dinner.  Something to be seen!  

If you have an extra day, be sure to make the 75 mile drive south to San Antonio.  This historic city is worth the day trip.  Take a free tour of the Alamo and find out why this church is such an important part of American history.  

Afterwards, take a quick stroll over to the Riverwalk and check out the shops or take a 40 minute river cruise and learn about the history of San Antonio.  Click here to view family-friendly hotels in the Greater San Antonio area.

Northern California

If you want to escape the city life and see what nature has to offer, make your way to the California Coast or visit the majestic Redwoods.  The California coast is rugged and beautiful and sunsets are amazing.  

On your way to the coast and Eureka experience the awesome Redwood Trees by visiting the Avenue of the Giants.  A great side road that takes you through some of the largest and oldest living species on the planet!  Click here to find family-friendly hotels in on the California North Coast.

New Orleans, Louisana

There is more to New Orleans than partying on Bourbon Street.  In 2018, New Orleans is celebrated its Tricentennial (300 year anniversary).  Needless to say, there is plenty of history to witness throughout your visit. 

One of the best stops is Mardi Gras World, located near the Mississippi River.  This huge warehouse is just one of several that holds the displays of the floats used during Mardi Gras. 

The street cars run on five different lines and are a fun experience to view several districts like the Garden District and Central Business District.  

If the kids need to run, check out City Park.  An amazing park with beautiful scenery and plenty to do.  Rent paddle boats, play on one of the several playgrounds, discover Storyland, go for a walk around Big Lake, and so much more.  If you need to cool off, head indoors at the The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas.

Pigeon Forge – Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Located on the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains are these twin cities boasting with family activities. From mini golf, water parks, indoor sledding, dinner shows, go-carts and so much more!

With its close proximity to the Smoky Mountains there is also plenty of hiking trails to keep all ages moving. Go camping, RVing or simply bring food for a picnic. There is plenty to see and do in this National Park.

Plan ahead to try and get the best hotel rates. This is a popular destination, especially on the east coast. Another piece of advice – try to make lunch or dinner reservations when you arrive in town. It’s not uncommon to wait over two hours to get seated.

If you and your family can’t find something to do here….well all hope might be lost!

Now of course there are many other destinations that are just as great as those listed above. Unfortunately we haven’t been to all the great destinations that America has to offer but this is a pretty good start.

Have you been thinking about cruising but not sure if you everyone will like it? I’m hoping these tips to consider before cruising will help you understand what to expect.

Cruising is one of the best ways to take the family on vacation.  There is something to do for everyone…all ages!  

Over the years, we have learned a few things from our cruises. Some of the highlights of cruising include: endless food choices (even for picky eaters), each day you are in a different city, and tons of entertainment.

Now there are a few things that the first time cruisers, even second and third time cruisers need to be aware of or need to look at more closely.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m ALL about cruising!  However, I try to get the most bang for my buck!  

What are some tips to consider before cruising?

1.  Port fees / charges: These vary from cruise to cruise

The price that you view online for a particular cruise does NOT include the dreaded port fees / charges.  These charges vary from cruise to cruise.  

What are they?  Each destination city or port charges the ship to dock.  So, of course they pass that fee along to the cruiser.  

Look, I don’t mind paying fees to dock at a city but sometime the port fees are just as much as the cruise itself!  

For example, I was looking to book an Alaskan cruise on a particular cruise line and the cruise was going to be $499 pp for an interior room PLUS $399 for port fees (for the whole week)!

Whoa!  I couldn’t do it!  However, I’ve booked 7 day cruises and the port fees were only $98 per person.  

So look closely at the final cost.  Some destinations are worth the extra fees, some aren’t.

2.  Trip Insurance

This is an expense that I also don’t mind paying but the price varies from company to company.  

Travel insurance, especially for cruising is a MUST have in my book.  If you have a scheduled port, and the ship doesn’t stop there because of unexpected weather, you can usually file a claim and get reimbursed the port fees.  

The cruise line will usually provide some sort of onboard credit for missing a port too.  Or, your ship might be delayed or arriving to the home port because of weather or other unexpected travel situations.

3.  Gratuities / Tips

Each room (stateroom) is assigned a crew member who is dedicated to cleaning your room for the length of your cruise.  I’ve always had friendly, happy, and helpful room attendants during my cruises.  They deserve to be compensated!  

Some cruise lines will include a daily tip (around $18 / day per person) onto your final bill when you disembark (leave), and others won’t.  The gratuity also pays the dining room servers, bartenders, cruise director, other crew members throughout the ship.  

When I’ve cruised, there are certain crew members that go above and beyond their level of service.  For those folks, I try to give them cash.  The reason: the $18 a day ship imposed tip, will also pay the captain of the ship too.  

Yes, he did help us get from point A to point B, but the captain didn’t provided the extra level of hospitality as the other crew members did.

4. Port Transfer: Getting to a from the ship

So, once your plane arrives at the airport, how do you get to the ship?  Well, you need to get a ship / port transfer.  Depending on where the port is, you could be charged $25 – $150 one-way, per person, getting from the airport to the ship!  

Remember, you still need to get back to the airport!  The cruise lines usually offer a rate that is lower that hailing a taxi cab at the airport.  

I try to do my research before my trip and see if there are local transportation companies or shuttle buses that offer a flat rate instead. I’ve found this to be much cheaper.  

However, I must disclose that if you do book with the cruise line, and the ship is delayed arriving to port, they are much more flexible trying to accommodate than if you book privately.

5.  Airfare

Most cruise lines offer booking your airfare with your cruise package.  You aren’t required to do this but it can be helpful if you aren’t comfortable booking these type of things on your own.

The airfare with the cruise line is usually more expensive than if you book on your own. HOWEVER, if you flight is delayed or cancelled the cruise line will usually do everything it can do get you to the ship if the ship leaves port without you.  

In essence, the cruise line is taking responsibility for you not getting to the ship because they booked your plane tickets.  So far, I have not booked with the cruise line airfare because I am comfortable doing it on my own.  

I always fly in a day BEFORE the ship.  This helps to eliminate stress especially if my flight is delayed or cancelled.

So, wrapping it up, here’s the lowdown: money surprises are nobody’s friend, especially when you’re all hyped up for a cruise (unless, of course, you’re winning some cash – that’s a different story)!

It’s true; we do get a lot of rain in the Pacific NW.  Luckily, there are a few great indoor places where you can take the kids on rainy days.  It will keep you from going crazy and the kids will come back exhausted.

Located off of 164th Ave is SE Vancouver.  A huge entertainment venue that is known for their bowling and arcade games.  Food and drinks available for the whole family.

 Firstenburg Community Center – Address:  700 NE 136th Ave, Vancouver, WA 98684 – https://www.cityofvancouver.us/firstenburg

Next to the Cascade Public Library. A state of the art community center with beach entry indoor swimming pool and water slide, rock climbing wall, indoor track, and youth activities.  Child watch available for a fee.  Purchase a day pass or enroll in a monthly membership. 

Sky Zone – Address:  5000 E 4th Plain Blvd Suite C100, Vancouver, WA 98661 – https://www.skyzone.com/vancouver

Off of Fourth Plain Blvd in central Vancouver.  This indoor trampoline park is just the ticket to get the wiggles out.  Bounce around during open jump or practice trick shots while shooting hoops. There is also dodge ball, foam pit, fitness programs and toddler time. Snack bar is also available. 

Dizzy Castle – Address:  11606 NE 66th St, Vancouver, WA 98662 – http://www.dizzycastle.com/

Located close to I-205 and Fourth Plain Blvd.  An indoor play ground with over 13,000 sq ft of fun for all ages.  The castle theme and 70 foot pirate ship will put your child in awe.  Have toddlers?  There is a separate play area just for them.  Pizza, burgers, coffee drinks and more are available for purchase.

In the Salmon Creek area or NW Vancouver.  The Northwest’s largest indoor jungle has slides, ball room, and interactive gaming floor.  They also have educational programs like swim lessons, gymnastics, martial arts and camps.

All of the libraries in Clark County are perfect for the little ones. Each library has a calendar of events that are geared for all ages and you won’t have any trouble finding something to do. Bring the family in for storytime, make crafts, or explore all the books. You won’t be disappointed.

Step back in time and learn about Vancouver and Clark County’s past at the local museum. You can find plenty of exhibits, events and take a self-guided historic walking tour of the area.

Vancouver Water Resources Center – Address: 4600 SE Columbia Way, Vancouver, WA 98661 – https://www.cityofvancouver.us/publicworks/page/water-resources-education-center

This is one of Vancouver’s best kept secrets. Tucked away near the Columbia River the Water Resource Center is a hands on museum where the kids can learn and have fun. On a dry day, explore the property and take a hike on the walking trails. Check their calendar to view monthly events throughout the year. Best of all, it’s free!

As a parent of 2 children (7 yo & 4 yo), I’m always looking for ways to improve our travel experience, especially when flying.  If you don’t come prepared on the plane, it can make for a LONG flight.  

I have learned a few hard lessons along the way (e.g. my son not making it to the toilet mid flight), so why not learn from my mistakes!  LOL!  

Here is a list of items I pack in my carry-on luggage to help improve any child disaster that is thrown at me.

What items should carry on when traveling with kids?

My carry-on luggage of choice is a durable backpack.  Not only can I fit a ton of stuff in it (which has lots of different pockets), but it is easier to carry and store on the plane.  I also have my kiddos carry their own backpacks so I’m not stuck with the whole load.  So let’s get started….. 1. Face Masks (optional)

Although these aren’t required on airlines, I don’t mind wearing them on a plane. With such tight seats and people sick, it doesn’t bother me if folks think I’m weird. I generally pack three (3) face masks per person on our last trip. We have lost a few face masks or they just get stinky after continued use especially if you don’t have access to a wash machine. I also add a few drops of essential oils to keep them smelling fresh.

2. Medicine

Our daughter has a peanut allergy so an epi-pen and benadryl is crucial.  We also pack a small amount of liquid children’s ibuprofen and children’s dramamine.  I also pack a small bottle of ibuprofen, and sinus-cold tablets. I’ve flown a few times without these and it made for a LONG flight.

3. Empty Re-Useable Water bottles

This a great tip to save some extra money.  Make sure your bottle is empty before going through security.  After security, most airports have a water fountain or filling station for water bottles.  Our kids can’t wait for beverage service so this is a great fix.

4. Small blankets

We let the kids bring along their favorite blanket and have them pack in their backpack.

5. Snacks

No matter how many meals I give our kids, they are always hungry on the plane.  It could be a one hour flight and they just ate before we boarded, and will still be hungry!  I usually pack goldfish crackers, string cheese, apple slices, carrot sticks, or anything else I have in the house. Plus, some airports are still short staffed. Which means that not all restaurants are open to grab food.

6. Extra clothes

As I mentioned earlier, accidents can happen!  I usually pack a shirt, pants, underwear, and socks (for myself too).  Even if your kids are beyond the potty training years, spills can happen.  Plus, you never know, the airline could lose your luggage, or cancel your flight. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that you have a back-up change of clothes?

7. Wipes

I usually pack 2 kinds of wipes: antibacterial and flushable wipes.  You can get travel size packs at any store and they are perfect size for your backpack.  

The antibacterial I use to wipe down the tray table and arm rests. Before COVID I was doing this. Let’s face it, not all people have sanitation in mind. Plus, my kids can be messy and sometimes other people leave messes too.

8. Plastic bags

These have come in handy so many times I can’t keep track.  They can fit in just about any pocket of your backpack, and I usually pack 2 or 3.  They are great for garbage, wet clothes, carrying souvenir, etc.

9. Ziploc bags with sliders

I usually pack two gallon size and two quart size.  The airline usually provides a snack so I will empty the snacks into the ziploc bag for the kids hold.  Otherwise half the snacks fall on the floor, between the seats, or other random places.  They come in handy when we aren’t on the plane.  We have used them to store left over food from restaurants (grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, etc) while on the go.

10. Cell Phone / Tablet charger

Nothing is worse than being stuck in an airport with only 5% battery remaining.  As I mentioned earlier, if your flight is delayed or cancelled it is peace of mind to know you have it. I also pack a few extra battery packs too.

11. Print your travel reservations

I know there is an app for everything, but what happens if you lose your phone?  My husband has experienced this twice in his travels.  He was so glad he had back-up documents printed and in his backpack.

12. Photocopies of Passport – Driver’s License – Birth Certificate

Once again, if these important documents go missing how do you prove who you are?  My copies never leave my backpack, even after I return home.

13. Pull-ups (if necessary)

Our son is potty trained but still requires one at night.  As I mentioned earlier, your flight could be cancelled and delayed…you never know!

14. Dollar Tree treats

I usually try to find some new little toys to bring along.  The kids are excited because it’s new, and I may get 5 minutes to unwind!

15. First Aid kit / Sewing Kit

My kids always seem to manage a cut or 2 when traveling.  A travel size first aid kit can be found at most big box stores. Again, a travel size sewing kit is perfect for those lost buttons or broken zippers.

Conclusion:

There you have it!  It may seem like too much to pack but I have some how managed to fit it all in my backpack with room to spare.  On most trips, I usually use about 95% of the items listed above.
