Happy Pride Month! It first began when President Bill Clinton declared June to be “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month” in 1999 and 2000. Then, with each year President Barack Obama was in office, he declared June LGBT Pride Month. As we all become more educated, open minded, and accepting with broader and more diverse forms of identity, we all must continue to spread love and support to the LGBTQ+ community.

Being an LGBTQ+ ally is important to help educate others and create a comfortable environment for everyone to express themselves freely. As an ally, it is important for us to be great listeners, have an open mind, and be willing to talk. It is also important to not assume anyone’s sexual orientation or identity. Stand up for them and do not let anti-LGBTQ+ comments or discrimination slide. Educate yourself and others to confront prejudice and bias. Everyone deserves respect, love, and equal opportunity in this world!

Here are six inspirational LGBTQ+ activists who have devoted their life to influencing how the rest of the world perceives people of their community.

Marsha P. Johnson

For almost 25 years, Marsha P. Johnson was in the epicenter of New York City’s gay liberation movement. She fought for more than LGBT rights. She was in the forefront of anti-oppressive policing demonstrations. She was a big part of the establishment of one of the country’s first safe spaces for transgender and homeless adolescents.

Billie Jean King

King was the first woman athlete to win $100,000 in a single year (1971). The Women’s Tennis Association was founded when she persuaded her colleagues to establish a players’ union. The Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative was founded to help build a more inclusive workplace that assures equal pay and supports self-expression.

Harvey Milk

Milk began his term as a member of Congress by supporting a civil rights bill that made discrimination based on sexual orientation illegal. According to The New York Times, the legislation was the “most stringent and encompassing in the nation,” and indicated “the growing political power of homosexuals.”

Audre Lorde

She was a powerful speaker during the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1979. Lorde created Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press in 1981 with Barbara Smith and numerous other writers. Kitchen Table was dedicated to supporting feminists of color and their works.

Larry Kramer

He co-founded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), which has grown to become the world’s biggest private AIDS group. Kramer became upset with bureaucratic procrastination and homosexual men’s indifference about the AIDS pandemic; and sought to do more than the social services offered by GMHC.

RuPaul

RuPaul has been paving the runway and the world for the LGBTQ+ community. Many credit him for bringing drag into the spotlight and he was the first drag queen to be on Hollywood Walk of Fame. He became the first openly gay national television host in 1996 because of his show, The RuPaul Show on VH1. He believes drag is helping fight the patriarchy and the dangers of strict definitions of masculinity. Drag is a form of expression where you can be anyone you want, no matter what race, sexual orientation, etc., you can make your mark!

Meditation is a self-care ritual. To some, meditation needs sensory deprivation. That meditation needs to be still and in silence. But that type of meditation does not work for everyone, including me. Meditation can be going on a walk, cooking, and my favorite,  doing your skincare regimen. The essential part of how these can serve as your meditation practice is BEING INTENTIONAL. Not only will your skin love the consistency, but when done with intention, your skin will glow and your mental health will thrive. Here are three ways you can turn your skincare regimen into your meditation practice.

1. Intentional Touch

As humans, we all desire physical contact. We usually satisfy this desire with our romantic relationships, but we can provide a positive, loving touch to ourselves! Skincare is the best way to give yourself the touch of self-love. Intentionally touching the skin throughout your skincare will heal your soul. Whether it is massaging the skin from cleansing, treating your skin with serums, or SPF, this will help you feel more comfortable in your skin. Be mindful with your facial skincare and body care to light up your day.

2. Breathwork

Breathe your way to glowing skin. Breathwork can help slow down the mind and be present enough to listen to your body. We hold so much tension in our faces, especially in our jaw and eyebrows. It can release stress, anxiety, emotions, and tension in your body. Stress is also a trigger to all our skin concerns, such as acne, dermatitis, etc. The more stress-free you are, the more your skin will glow! 

3. Mantras

Mantras are a powerful tool used in yoga and meditation. It can help us rewire our brains to bring more positivity into our lives. This inner dialogue will help us boost our self-esteem and our sense of gratitude. This will promote more happiness in our lives and diminish stress. Less stress = glowing skin! Whether a personal or a pro makeup kit, hygiene is of the utmost importance! Start with cleaning your makeup brushes.

Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes should be cleaned regularly. It is ideal to clean them between makeup applications with a brush spray cleaner. This will help prevent breakouts on the skin and when you use clean brushes, this will also allow the makeup pigment be its true color. You can deep clean your brushes twice a month with brush soap shampoo and rest the brushes to dry overnight. 

Makeup Brush Cleaning Tips

If you are using a brush shampoo, getting a rubber mat with texture makes it easier on you as this helps clean the brushes more efficiently. You can swirl the brush, move it against the mat back and forth and rinse with warm water until makeup and soap are completely gone. If you have a brush cleaning spray, spray the product on a paper towel and swirl the brush until you see no makeup when you wipe it.

Cleaning your actual makeup products is also extremely important because you want to ensure that your makeup is sanitized between clients or between uses. I use a makeup sanitizer spray by Cinema Secrets to spritz on all my makeup. I use 70% – 90% alcohol to clean after sharpening eye pencils and lip pencils. Always clean eyelash curlers and even sharpeners as you don’t want to spread bacteria to clients or have a contaminated kit as this can damage your career. While these are some tips for my pros out there, this also applies to your personal kit.

How To Keep The Inside Of Your Makeup Bag Clean

For personal makeup bags/travel bags, take the essentials. My advice is no more than 10 products and buy travel-sized. This will help with having room in your bag. Here are my recommendations:

1) Foundation with SPF or Tinted Moisturizer

2) Concealer

3) Eyeliner

4) Mascara

5) Bronzer

6) Blush

7) Lip Liner

8) Lip Color

If you are reading this, you have made it through the cold winter! It’s finally spring and you know what that means. It’s time to transition our skincare to conquer the new season. The spring brings warmer weather, higher humidity, and time outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. Clean out your skincare cabinet and remove the dust and debris built up on your skincare products. Let’s organize your new lineup of products. 

Exfoliate.

Buff away the flaky, dead skin from the winter with an exfoliator. As the temperature heats and humidity rises, we are better able to tolerate acids and stronger active component compositions. The Exfoliating Face Scrub from Lumière de Vie will leave your skin feeling smooth and revitalized. It aids in the removal of dead skin cells, excess oil, and the unclogging of pores, giving you that glow! 

Lighten up on the moisturizer.

When it comes to Spring skincare, a must-have is a lightweight moisturizer. It is up to you which chain fits your style best if you are a silver or a gold person, and how you want to layer them. Here are my top three favorite chains at the moment. 

Herringbone Chains

Layered’s Maya and Sophia are the perfect herringbone chains. I love herringbone chains because it’s timeless and it’s the perfect base for layering. The links of the chain are flat and held tightly creating a liquid gold look. Sophia is a bit thicker than the Maya, so if you are going for more of a dainty look choose the Maya. Spring break is finally here which means it’s time for a getaway. If it’s still cold where you live, it’s time to travel somewhere warm and tropical. I know figuring out what to pack after months of layers and beanies can feel intimidating. You have to pack not only your clothes, but accessories, shoes, and your skincare. I always tend to overpack when it comes to skincare but I have a list of essentials if I need to pack light. Here is a Spring Break skincare travel guide for packing only the essentials. 

SPF

This is a MUST. It’s essential for every day, especially on vacation where you are exposed to the sun for longer periods of time. It’s the number one thing you can do for your skin whether you are indoors or outdoors. UVA and UVB rays are a form of ultraviolet (UV) light that can be damaging to our skin and health. UVB are the rays that cause sunburn. UVA rays penetrate even more deeply into the skin causing early skin aging and increasing the risk of skin cancer.  For maximum protection, sunscreen should be applied directly to the skin, before moisturizer and makeup. Another option is to double-dip by first applying a layer of sunscreen, then moisturizer, and finally another layer of sunscreen. No matter how you apply it is important that you allow any treatments/moisturizers to dry fully before SPF application so that the sunscreen can be absorbed fully into the skin.

Tip: Lather it on. 

Micellar Water

On vacation, we are always on the go to make a reservation or excursion. Micellar water is the best thing ever when you need to cleanse your face quickly, or even at night when you are exhausted. Before run-off to your next destination, refresh and cleanse your skin so you can prevent clogged pores and breakouts. Pour a generous amount onto a cotton pad and gently apply it to the face in a circular motion. Micelles are tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules that attract dirt and oil. Rather than having to scrub your skin, dirt, makeup, and impurities are gently lifted away without the need to rinse.

Tip: Perfect to bring in your checked bag when traveling if you will be in an area where water quality is uncertain.

Makeup Wipes

Like I said, on vacation, we are always on the go. Take makeup wipes everywhere you go so you have access to refreshing your skin whenever you need them. It’s a great alternative to micellar water and easier to travel around with. Gently sweep over face and neck until skin is clean of makeup, dirt, and oil. 

Tip: Use after a long sweaty excursion/day at the beach and keep in your bag for easy access.

Exfoliating Mask

Post-flight we tend to look dull and lack that natural glow. Various environmental factors like pollutants can cause oxidative stress through the formation of free radicals. It’s important to exfoliate so that the dead layers of skin can be wiped away. It’s also a great way to relax after a long, beautiful day.

Tip: Exfoliating before shaving for a smoother shave. 

After Sun Care

What’s as important as sun care? After-sun care. Now that you have protected your skin, it’s time to treat it with some needed moisture. It will not only prolong your tan but rehydrate and soothe your skin while fighting the signs of premature aging that sun exposure can cause. Rehydrate skin post-sun to keep skin looking younger and lock in your sun-kissed glow.

Jatia has incorporated Motives’ products and tools to create a boutique experience for her customer. She is breaking boundaries within the beauty industry and continues to build her unbreakable empire.

Let’s get to know this fearless female to start Women’s History Month with a bang!

How were you introduced to Motives? 

I was introduced to Motives twice. The first time was ten years ago when a hairstylist from Greensboro, NC reached out to me over Facebook and shared her love of the products with me. I had seen Motives featured in media and even a music video by one of my favorite artists and was intrigued by the quality of the products. However, at the time I was very new in my artistry and wasn’t confident in potentially retailing products. I watched the company for years and always loved what I saw. I said to myself, if I was given the opportunity again, I would love to introduce my clients to Motives. In 2020, a colleague in the UK reached out to me, again on social media, and asked if I was interested in learning more about Motives. I responded, “I already know about Motives. I’m obsessed! How do I get my hands on it?” 



What made you want to learn more and align yourself with Motives Cosmetics?

I watched Motives for a long time and saw that the quality of the products never waivered, the company always stayed relevant when it came to trends, and they used quality ingredients. I loved the exclusivity of offering Motives to my clients. Also, individuality has always been important to me. I didn’t want to be talking about the same things every other makeup artist and influencer was. I also didn’t want my clients to get overwhelmed by sending them to stores where the “next popular thing” was pushed on them instead of prioritizing what they needed.

How have you leveraged the training & events to build your belief to propel your success?

Education has always been something I’ve prioritized to grow my artistry. When I experienced the quality of education Motives offers to their Pro-Partners, for little to no cost, I was so impressed. If you ever invested in Master Classes you know education as an artist often causes you to have to sacrifice other things. This can be frustrating and affect your confidence if you aren’t growing at the pace you want. Education is ingrained in our company culture, and it’s something that is given to you. I wish I understood the value of this as a young artist. Now, I use our education to plug in an artist I mentor and clients alike. It adds value to experiences with me as an artist and teacher.



In what ways has incorporating Motives into your business changed things for you?

Motives has completely changed my business and given me my time back. I can work from home while creating a boutique-style atmosphere. It’s giving me the time I need with my family and the ability to control my environment. The company provides amazing marketing tools that I use to promote my brand, all the while saving time and energy. The training I’ve received through Motives has helped me define my target demographic and personal mission. Which is to “Empower women through beauty and Self-care”. I now do more 1-on-1 lessons, personal shopping, and custom blend sessions. The majority of my clients are busy moms and business owners like me that need help making time for themselves and their beauty routine. Motives has given me the vehicle to serve them and has made my time with my clients more special. Also, Motives has given me a network of people that truly care about helping me grow as an artist and business owner. There is no competition in our company and that is truly special in the beauty industry.

What do you feel is the best way to grow your business?

Find people that are passionate about helping people. For me, it can’t just be about the business or my personal goals. I want to meet needs that have been overlooked in the beauty industry so I am truly selective in who I add to my team. Do you love people, are you kind, are you open to learning? Those are the first thing I look for, being passionate about artistry is next.



What are you most excited about regarding long-term goals?

Motives has opened me up to so many new possibilities! The people I’ve had the privilege to be around have helped me grow as a person and an artist. Their influence has helped me step out on faith in some major areas. This year I’m continuing my education which has been a goal of mine for years. I‘ve been so inspired by the people around me that I could not put it off anymore. I now run a networking group, Mom Moguls, that serves moms. This is funny since being super introverted, I barely talked to people in the past. Motives has helped me overcome my fears and start becoming the woman I am meant to be.

I didn’t want this week to end! This World Conference had so many memorable moments that will live in my heart forever. I kicked off the event with my motivational speech to get everyone out of a rut and focus on moving at the speed of light. I loved interacting and getting to know all of you who got up and spoke. Your courage will take you far in life.

A person who always kept me motivated was my brother, Dennis. I was honored to introduce Lauren, Katie, and Nancy Franks to the stage in tribute to our Mr. Energy. Today we all felt we were under Dennis’ light. We are staying focused and staying the course just as he would want us to do. It makes me happy to see them continuing to keep his legacy alive.

JR closed the event with a groundbreaking speech about the power of people. He empowered us to push through and do better as a team. Lean into our humanity to connect and build stronger connections, because that is what the world needs more of right now.

Step 1: Use the provided spatula to scoop out a pea-sized amount of the Refining Lip Scrub. Apply the scrub to your lips, then gently massage in a circular motion to help buff away dead skin cells. Remove scrub with a damp washcloth.

Step 2: Use the provided spatula or your finger with a circular motion to carve out the desired amount of Moisturizing Lip Masque. Gently massage into lips, coating fully for best results.

Whether it’s for date-night or Valentine’s Day, here are 3 makeup looks you can wear to celebrate.

Pink Flair

Don’t be afraid of a little color. This pink look screams Valentine’s Day!

1. Begin by blending “Fever” onto the outer corner of the eye and sweep the color into the crease and slightly above (almost meeting the start of the brow).
2. Pat “Extravaganza” onto the outer part of the lid followed by “Hard Wired” onto the inner portion of the lid for a softer transition of color 
3. Line the eyes with “Onyx” Khol Eyeliner and blend out with the shade “Fever”
4. Highlight the inner corner of the eye with “Fly” (From the Super Power Mattes Palette)

Golden Gal

Going glam? Try this golden winged eye look.

1. Begin by smudging the Khol Eyeliner in “Earth” on to the lid and blend 
2. Pat “Slay” onto the inner & outer corners of the lid and “Winning” on to the center of the lid 
3. Line the eyes using “Precisely The Point Eye Line”
4. Apply a bit of “Winning” to the inner corner of the eye for highlight
