People new to gardening oftentimes overlook the importance of selecting the right mulch for their garden. Some factors are quite obvious, while others have not been thought of. Below are several factors that you need to keep in mind when you hit the garden store for mulch:

1. Choose a mulch that does not promote the depletion of nitrogen. Nitrogen is a very important (and essential) nutrient that needs to be in your soil. However, this nutrient can be scarce depending on the type of mulch used.

A good example would be using finely chopped mulch, like sawdust. There are microorganisms that are responsible for decomposing this sawdust while at the same time they seriously deplete it of nitrogen that is needed for your plants. In time, if your perennials and other flowers are living in this type of mulch, the lack of nitrogen will cause them to become "chlorotic", or yellow in color, which is the result of a nutrition deficiency.

Should the rest of your garden start the same chlorotic signs then it is time to consider that you have a nitrogen depletion problem. A good way to fix this is to add approximately 2 pounds of complete fertilizer spread out for every 100 ft. Spread the fertilizer all around your soil and then lay down your mulch. If you are not facing a nutritional deficiency in your garden then you can also use this technique as a preventative measure against nitrogen depletion.

2. Another factor to consider when buying mulch is its flammability. This is one of those situations that most gardeners rarely consider. However, many fires are started in garden areas due to smokers flicking their cigarettes when they are done. This is especially true if you have created a garden area around an office building or some other public area.

Dropped cigarettes and lit matches can easily set off mulches that are organic. Even if your garden is created in your backyard and is totally personal, you still may want to consider flammability as a possible hazard in case anybody does come over and has a cigarette or two. Fire dangers include hay, pine needles, recycled mulches, and straw.

3. Last but not least, be careful when using organic mulches in areas that are poorly drained and gather up moisture easily. These low-lying wet areas may collect gallons of water which can produce toxic chemicals due to the decomposition that is occurring. These chemicals are a danger to your perennials and other flowers because of its toxicity. If the garden area you are considering is already prone to this type of water build up, then adding mulch is not a good idea and will only slow down the soil's process of drying out.

This article will discuss the purpose for completing an apprenticeship in landscape gardening. It will review what is required to become a professional landscaper.

Completing An Apprenticeship in Landscape Gardening

Many landscapers only work on residential or small commercial landscaping jobs. They are professionals but not certified as a landscape architect. A landscape architect is usually also a degreed engineer and licensed to work on large public or commercial projects. In either case, completing an apprenticeship in landscape gardening can lead to professional certification.

Hard Work

Completing an apprenticeship in landscape gardening requires a lot of hard work. A landscape apprentice is a working landscaper. In fact, an apprentice is frequently assigned some of the hardest, dirtiest work involved so they learn to understand a project from every perspective and from beginning to end. It is the apprentice you will often see digging the holes on a job. An apprenticeship in landscape gardening requires the ability to do physical labor, lift heavy loads, work in all types of weather and handle chemicals. A landscaper must be able to do math calculations, have good eyesight and able to operate landscaping equipment.

Details

An apprenticeship in landscape gardening involves gaining experience and knowledge in many landscaping areas.

* Apprentices learn the differences between residential, business and public landscaping projects

* Interior and exterior garden design and planning is learned

* Apprentices gain knowledge about the various landscaping materials available and their uses in projects

* Apprentices learn about soil types

* Apprentices learn about plants and trees and their different characteristics, including how they grow, their texture, their full size

* Apprentices learn about pruning methods, sod varieties and plant thinning methods

* Apprentices also learn about environmental laws and license requirements

* Apprentices planning on becoming landscape architects learn to read engineering site surveys and site analysis

* Apprentices learn how to use landscape software and how to draw plans by hand

* Apprentices study the artistic presentation of plants in a landscape

* Apprentices also study the view perspectives

The Program

It can take up to four years to complete an apprenticeship in landscape gardening. There are schools around the world that offer programs. Landscape architects are the highest level of landscape professional. They work on large public jobs such as zoos, parks and public gardens. Landscape architects design large commercial building landscapes projects. Professional landscapers have completed an apprenticeship and work on the smaller jobs. When deciding to hire a professional to complete a home landscaping job, ask to see the certification as proof they are knowledgeable in the landscaping field. Knowing the person you hire has completed an apprenticeship in landscape gardening provides assurance that you will get qualified assistance.

This article will discuss the importance of landscape gardening design. It will review the advantages of following a careful plan.

The Grass Is Greener

Why does your neighbor's grass look greener and the flowers healthier? Why is he enjoying his patio while you are removing sod layers to build a walkway? The answer is easy. Your neighbor spent time on his landscape gardening design to insure it had all the desired elements, including a sprinkler system. You got in a hurry and forgot to draw in the corner flowerbed, and the men delivering the sod laid it right where you wanted to plant. Then, you completely forgot about a sprinkling system and now must spend a lot of time moving sprinklers so your expensive newly planted flowers and shrubs don't wither. As the old adage claims - it pays to plan ahead.

For Your Consideration

Landscape gardening design is a lot more than grass and flowers. It is a process encompassing the past and the future. In the past, you sat in your lawn chair and often wished you had a retaining wall by the back property line and a shade tree near the patio. The design process is where you insure your landscaping future holds everything you desired. It is in the planning and designing stage that the job is easiest. So it is important to take into consideration everything you want included in your landscaping project.

From The Underground Up

When beginning your landscape gardening design, don't start above ground. You begin the planning underground and then move up towards the sky.

? Determine if you need a sprinkler system. If so, include it in the design even if you cannot afford it at project implementation. Adding a sprinkler system in the future can be greatly simplified by doing as much accommodating as possible in the present. For example, don't build a raised flowerbed out of block where you need to run a water line in the future.

* Decide if you want to include a pond in your landscape gardening design.

* Is there an existing deck that will require landscaping around the edges?

* Are you going to add a patio?

* Does a fence need to be built?

* Are any retaining walls necessary for stability?

* Are any buildings planned for construction?

* Should a gazebo be included in the design?

* Determine which plants will work best in each area to be landscaped, fitting the bed designs to the plants you desire. Shade plants cannot be planted in a raised bed built in full sun.

* Consider the root growth of trees. Trees planted in the wrong spot can cause severe damage to patios and decks in the future.

Taking Time

It pays to take time when preparing a landscape gardening design. Walk around the property, imagining the ideal landscape setting. Consider what you can afford now and what you will be able to afford in the future. Meshing the two together in your landscape gardening design can save a lot of work and aggravation when you could be sipping lemonade in a lawn chair.

Gardening tools do not need to cost new enthusiasts an arm and a leg. However, when gathering the initially needed gardening tools and supplies, walking into a home and garden center to select and purchase the gardening tools can prove to be a bit overwhelming if the new gardener doesn't know what is most important and isn't prepared with a list.

When seasoned gardeners are asked about their favorite or most often used gardening tools, five pretty obvious and traditional items and suggestions for selecting them often come up. Many gardeners will quickly suggest clippers or shears as the most frequently used and important of gardening tools. As clippers are used in the removing of leaves and branches, shaping and pruning, they are used very frequently. Thus those best in the place to know also strongly suggest making highly certain the garden shears are very comfortable to use and fit nicely in the hand.

Successful gardeners understand the quality of soil will greatly determine the strong and healthy development of their seeds and plants as well as their life. New and well-established plants need the healthiest soil possible. Accordingly, other important and useful gardening tools needed to best enjoy gardening are a shovel and hoe. When planting trees, shrubs and larger plants in the garden, a round-ended shovel is needed. Gardeners use a hoe to cultivate the topsoil permitting water and nutrients to get in as well as for weeding. Many gardeners select a spading fork as the most used and favorite of their gardening tools. Used in smaller gardening projects to break up hardened dirt and to dig down to improve the top soil and open it up before planting anything, a spading fork looks like a small pitchfork but has a much shorter handle and tines that are wider.

For leveling the ground after turning the top soil and yet before actually planting the seedlings, or for removing stones or big chunks of earth from the soil, a rake is another of gardening tools used in preparing the earth for planting.

For all gardening tools, long time gardeners strongly implore those new to the hobby to keep comfort and quality foremost in mind. Neither the cheapest nor most expensive of gardening tools is a good deal if it leaves the gardener with blisters or breaks the first time it is used.

As with other hobbies, the Internet has improved the shopping experience for all gardeners a great deal by increasing the selection availability of gardening tools and decreasing the associated costs. However, when it comes to finding the best and most useful gardening tools, garage sales and swap meets are another avenue veteran gardeners suggest beginning gardeners use when gathering the initial basic gardening tools.

Mount Fuji Serissa is a small shrub whose gnarled trunk and tiny leaves make it a popular bonsai. The shrub flowers twice or thrice a year and requires careful handling. The leaves fall off if there is too much or too little water; they also fall off if it is too hot or cold. There is a similar reaction if the plant is moved or if there is a change in light conditions.

The flowers usually drop off in one or two days, followed by the leaves. If you panic and water the plant too much or too little, you may end up killing the plant. The best is to leave it alone, and let the leaves grow once again.

Serissa requires full sunlight when kept outdoors and at least 1000 Lux of light when kept indoors. The plant's water requirements are most tricky. They go up sharply in hot weather, making some experts recommend that in hot weather the plant should be placed in a tray of water. However, there are others who warn that this may lead to root rot.
Some recommend misting, though this needs to be avoided when the flowers are blooming because it can cause them to rot.

If kept outdoors the whole year, Serissa will shed its leaves when the temperature drops. However, don't move it in and out of shade; also avoid placing it next to a heat source. You will be inviting disaster.

The plant prefers slightly acid soil conditions, and can be fed half-strength plant food or liquid bonsai food every 10 to 14 days the during growth period and every 4 to 6 weeks during winter. It can be propagated with 4-inch cuttings in a glass of water, from early summer onwards. Bottom heat may induce faster rooting.

Serissa grows fast and needs repeated pruning to retain its shape. It can be wired during the growth period. It also needs repotting in basic bonsai soil in spring, once in two years. The roots also need moderate pruning at that time.

To plan a vegetable garden is really tough considering the factors that need to be worked upon. But considering the facts the best place where the vegetable garden can receive the most sunlight is the south. Hence, the south would be the ideal place to cultivate the vegetables. May it be the vegetable or the flower plant, sunlight is required by both of them in adequate amounts. To avoid the clashes between the plants one must leave enough space between the two. Actually, the more the variety the better it is for the vegetables. This way the pests too have distractions and do not attack the vegetables in the garden. Determining the seed will in turn help grow the plants and size up one's garden.

The use of the space

One must make sure that the weeds and the grass is pulled out as the weeds can prove to be injurious to the vegetables in the gardens. Putting in rocks and spacing out the vegetables helps in the growth of the vegetables one a whole. The beds or the raised beds help in raising the level of the plants and thus getting them closer to the sunlight. This way the planning helps in building the best planned vegetable garden. The compost helps in enhancing the plants and the vegetables and thus having the bets fertile soil. Raised beds though are the best options to go on for.

Vegetables and spacing

The vegetables can be planted in rows or one subsequent row after leaving in some space in between the plants and the vegetables. This way the plants get equal attention, minerals and at the same time grow evenly. Thoughtful usage and utilization of the vegetable garden and the space that is allotted helps in making a better vegetable garden. Mainly one should go in to sowing seeds which could be a lot more effective and where you can be assured of the demand in the market. This way, vegetable gardening is fun and at the same time gives the best results which one would expect.

Some people believe that when the weather starts getting colder and the leaves start to fall, it is time to put away the gardening tools and wait until next spring to work on their garden again. Wrong. Winter is an important time to maintain your garden's health and assure yourself a good crop for next year. You may think that might take to long to prepare your garden, but the truth is that it takes less than one day to prepare your garden for the upcoming winter.

When the nighttime temperatures drop to less than forty-five degrees Fahrenheit for more than four days in a row, or frost is forecasted for your area (usually around late October or November) you know its time to begin preparing your garden. You should begin by evaluating your garden design, check which plants grew well in the past season, and which plants did not do well. Fall is a good time to decide which plants will remain in you garden next year, and which ones should go.

It is also a good time to decide which new plants you want to grow. To make your garden more colorful and healthy, be sure only to plant the more hardy plants during the fall so that they can withstand the winter. Some plants that will do fine being planted in fall are: rudbeckia, Aster Novi-belgii, Anemone Japonica, panicle hyandea, endive, escarole, and Brussels sprouts. You can find all of these and more in gardening magazines or your local nursery.

After you have finished this you should begin cleaning up your garden. Begin by pulling out weeds that may have cropped up, and raking fallen leaves. Weeds and rotten leaves can carry insects and diseases that might be harmful to your garden. You should also rid your garden of spent annual plants, and harvest your vegetables and other plants that cannot withstand the winter weather. After fall has come and gone, the leaves will be off your trees and you can see the rotten branches. Trimming off the unwanted branches from your trees isn't necessary to your gardens health, but may help later on by not dropping branches on your plants and not blocking too much of the sun.

If you have younger trees you should consider wrapping them and supporting them with stakes to help them survive the winter wind and cold. Putting mulch over your garden for the winter can be a helpful way to protect plants from sudden temperature changes and heavy snow. For mulch you can use about five inches of shredded bark, pine needles, or a variety of other materials. You have to be careful not to mulch too early, because some insects may still be alive and able to take shelter in it for the winter.

Once you are finished with your gardening tools you should clean them and make sure they are in a safe place where they won't rust and you know where they'll be for next year. Before winter comes you should always set out slug repellent, as slugs are one of the worst bugs to have in your garden. If you have a pool or fountain in your garden, be sure to take out any fish that you have in them and bring them inside. There's nothing sadder than a fish frozen in a block of ice.

Plant propagation is a method of asexual reproduction in plants. Asexual reproduction takes place with the help of stem, roots and leaves of these plants. Plant propagation is a method in which rapid multiplication of the stock plant or the mother plant takes place so that the plant grows in a large number of its progeny plants. This is done by the modern techniques that have been developed recently. There are different types of asexual or vegetative reproduction techniques like the grafting, air layering and cutting. The propagation time is different for different plants. The propagation time is mainly dependent on the type of propagation, the type of the species and the environmental conditions in which the propagation is being carried out.

The botanical name of the spider plant is chlorophytum comosum. These plants are easy to grow. They have no problem in the growth of these plants. The characteristic of these plants is that they have the baby spiders hanging overboard. The growth of these plants starts in the form of small white flowers. The important feature of these spider plants is that they give out a large amount of oxygen. Secondly, these plants have an inherent capability in them to remove the pollutants from the surrounding air.

Thus the spider plant indirectly helps in improving the quality of the surrounding air. There are two varieties of the spider plants. One of which consists of green with a white margins. The other plant type is green with white central stripe. The spider plants are very sensitive to the tap water. They are also very sensitive to the chemicals. The effect of these chemicals is immediately seen on the leaves of these spider plants. The plants show brown tips on their leaves.

In propagating the spider plants they should be exposed to medium to high light. One should also take care that these spider plants should not be exposed to direct sunlight in the afternoon. The light requirements are different for different types of spider plants. The variegated types require more light than the plain green plants. One more important fact about the spider plants is that they should not be supplied with excess water than required. This is because they have roots which are large and fleshy and store a large amount of water in them. Thus if excess of water is added to them then there is a possibility that these plants can get rotton. Thus one should understand the basic requirements of the spider plants during their propagation period.

There are shops for garden tools that cater to all kinds of gardens and others specialize in a certain kind of garden. There are also stores for the best gardening tools that offer alternative tools such as natural pest control methods, organic fertilizers and ergonomic garden tools. Most of these shops offer the best gardening tools.

So in your search for the most useful tools for your gardening activities, it is important to note what kind of garden you have.

The best gardening tools that any gardener may have could be the following:

Secateurs are basic pruning tools and one of the most appreciated tools for a gardener. When you buy a secateur make sure that it always stays sharp to avoid damaging the plant. Look for models that have blades that can be sharpened and replaced, models with tension control and with sizes that best fit your hands. Secateurs usually cost around $50 - $130.

Hedge trimmers or shears are also one of the coolest gardening tools that should be always available to a gardener. These tools are best used for pruning hedges and shrubs. There are hedge trimmers that have curved blades to stop branches from sliding out when cut.

Forks are used for turning and aerating compost and breaking up lumps of soil. Forks are one of the handiest gardening tools that have been in existence for a long time. Older designs are recommended. Forks don't usually have lots of features to sport, so better look for sturdiness instead. Forks usually cost around $30 - $100.

Shovel as opposed to a spade has a scoop blade. It is best used to move around dirt and garden soil.

Spade as opposed to a shovel has a flat blade. It is best used for cutting edges, digging and dividing plants. Always make spades as sharp as possible. Usual cost for spades ranges from $30 - $50.

A gardener will have a hard time completing most gardening activities without a shovel or a spade.

A Pruning saw is used to prune plants like roses. Pruning saws have a blade that fit between stems or branches that easily and cuts them as you pull the prune backwards. Pruning saws usually cost $27- $55.

The best gardening tools don't have to be so expensive. Flea markets and garage sales can be excellent sources of these useful gardening tools.

Garden tools are a necessity when growing a garden, and for your garden only the best gardening tools are acceptable.

The way you garden is always for your satisfaction. The way you garden may result to its success and failure. Gardening also requires you to be more patient and observant to the things that are necessary in maintaining and sustaining the expansion of your garden. Here are some few gardening tips that can help you become a successful gardener.

1. You may start small. In this way, you can assure yourself that you can attend and give proper care to your growing plants. Some growers prefer small gardens because they can be easily managed. You can also learn gardening basics such as disease prevention, weed removal, pest control and watering requirements with a minimum number of plants on your garden. As you improve your gardening skills, you may increase the number of your plants or you may expand a new garden bed if there is still space.

2. You may start planning and creating your compost pile. You have the option of building elaborated composts on a standard scale. Try to create a simple pile on a corner space within your property. You may scatter a thin layer all over the garden beds at least twice a year. You may mix it with regular soil when it is time to plant. Some growers use it as a top dressing on their lawns.

3. It is essential to apply mulch on your garden. It can control weed growth and can maintain the moisture of the soil. It also stabilizes the soil temperature and sustains air ventilation within the garden. You may mulch everything that is present in the area.

4. Minimize the time you spend in maintaining your garden. This means that you are only required to prune your plants when it is only needed. Too much fertilizing and pruning can create tender producing plants. You may also encounter plants that have succulent growth. This plants may be attract insects and destroy them. However, many gardeners believe that plants should be forced to grow faster rather than allowing them to grow on their usual rate.

5. You should always have a healthy soil. This is where the use of compost goes at hand. Compost makes your soil healthy and loose. You should also avoid walking and wandering on established gardens. Every step you make can tighten and compact the soil. This will make it hard for roots to grow and penetrate the soil. It is important to create pathways between the rows and beds of your plants.

6. Avoid working on the soil when wet. You can see big clumps of hard pecked soil when you opt to work on wet soil. Always remember not to over cultivate the soil especially with a rototiller. Using a rototiller can disturb the soil and can lose its form and texture. Provide your garden with good soil. Make sure that it is not too powdery. It should have mixed particles of varying sizes and composition.

7. Try to be native in your garden. In fact, native plants are a lot easier to grow because they not prone to diseases and pests. That is because they only require minimal water for their growth. Most plants that are grown in greenhouses nowadays that require lots of special care and attendance.

8. You should visit your garden regularly. You may spend at least 10 minutes a day walking around the garden early in the morning or late in the afternoon. However, it is advised to try to walk in the pathways so that the soil will not settle. Wandering within the place can make a special bond with every plant that you grow in your garden. You may spot some plants that need water, see some insects inhabiting your plants. You may even try to pull some weeds that spread along the lawn.

You should water your plants properly. It is not advisable to water them frequently because it can cause plant roots to hover near the soil cluster. You can have the option of deep soaking every time you water them. It will allow the roots to grow deeper and penetrate underneath the soil's surface. It is better to water your plants early in the morning so that plant leaves can dry up when they are exposed to morning sunlight. This will also ensure lesser risks of having fungal diseases.

There are a lot of steps involved and that have to be seriously followed. Sometimes this becomes seemingly impossible for those who are located in the extreme climatic regions. The two kinds of problems that a vegetable garden faces is the problem related to the pests and the fertilizers. The dose of good fertilizers is necessary in order to get a good quality reap in any ways. Nitrogen is the other necessity in the garden of the vegetables. Nitrogen helps in getting a lush green vegetable growth. Compost kind of soil is much more important than any other kind of soil. Disposing of home kitchen leftovers can help enrich the soil in your own backyard. The bacteria and the fungi of these disposals can help in a lot of ways to actually strengthen the soil.

Vegetable growing

Compost soil is the emulsifier for the vegetable growing. Adding the dashes of tobacco stems and wood ash can help in building up the content for potassium in the compost in one's backyard. Potassium is extremely necessary for the vegetables to grow. Conventional gardening is another mode that people opt out for. Some homemade pesticides can help in the eradication of the pests from your vegetable garden. The pest can decay the whole crop. Disposing off the eggshells and the coffee left over grinds can be of great help. Making pits in the backyard helps disposing of these items in the pits. Using weeds though can harm the growth of the vegetables. Hence, while making any choices one must give it a thought. However while adding any fertilizers one must consider the constituents. Commercial fertilizers are good for many, but at the same time, certain vegetables cannot do much to enjoy the benefits. Using home-based fertilizers is necessary, as at times there are chances that the usage of the ones available in the market can be defying. These can sometimes prove to be helpful for the organisms in growing rather than strengthening the plants.

Although most people think or gardening, and especially organic gardening, in terms of fruits and vegetables that gardeners grow to eat or sell, they are not the only forms of organic gardening. Landscaping organic gardening is becoming just as popular as other types of organic gardening as people strive to protect their environment from harsh chemicals and prevent children and pets from accidentally ingesting any of the man-made pesticides that used to be used to protect landscaping from insects. Like plants and vegetables, the landscaping surrounding our homes is susceptible to insects and diseases, and to keep it protected, we must also nurture and protect it just as we do our fruits and vegetables.

Although some may think it is not high priority to utilize landscaping organic gardening because we don't eat any products because of the landscaping, but that may not be necessarily true. If you are a farmer, and your chickens or hens happen to eat grass from your landscaping that have harsh chemicals in them, these chemicals can indeed be passed along to humans if the product has not left the animal's body by the time he is prepared for slaughter. There is also the potential that your dog or cat may become ill from eating grass with chemicals in it. For the protection of both animals and humans, even your landscaping organic gardening should be organically grown.

Why is such an emphasis placed on landscaping organic gardening?
As aforementioned, concerns for the health of children and pets should dictate that we take precautions. If you live in an urban or suburban area, this is of even greater importance since other kinds of little animals may be around such as squirrels, rabbits, and even birds who decide to come to the ground to look for worms to eat. Taking care of all of the animals and humans should be our first concern, not whether it's easier to spray pesticide that take the time to treat our landscaping in a more natural way. Have we reached a phase in life where the time it takes to tend to our landscape and gardening is more important than the safety of living things? If a person cannot take the time to treat the landscaping organically, then perhaps that person should just get some Astroturf and not have to worry about whether the grass will live or die. Perhaps that is harsh, but there must come a time when we stop thinking about the extra time and extra money involved with landscaping organic gardening, and start thinking about how much safer it will be for children, pets, and other small animals.

Any reliable seed house can be depended upon for good seeds; but even so, there is a great risk in seeds. A seed may to all appearances be all right and yet not have within it vitality enough, or power, to produce a hardy plant.

If you save seed from your own plants you are able to choose carefully. Suppose you are saving seed of aster plants. What blossoms shall you decide upon? Now it is not the blossom only which you must consider, but the entire plant. Why? Because a weak, straggly plant may produce one fine blossom. Looking at that one blossom so really beautiful you think of the numberless equally lovely plants you are going to have from the seeds. But just as likely as not the seeds will produce plants like the parent plant.

So in seed selection the entire plant is to be considered. Is it sturdy, strong, well shaped and symmetrical; does it have a goodly number of fine blossoms? These are questions to ask in seed selection.

If you should happen to have the opportunity to visit a seedsman's garden, you will see here and there a blossom with a string tied around it. These are blossoms chosen for seed. If you look at the whole plant with care you will be able to see the points which the gardener held in mind when he did his work of selection.

In seed selection size is another point to hold in mind. Now we know no way of telling anything about the plants from which this special collection of seeds came. So we must give our entire thought to the seeds themselves. It is quite evident that there is some choice; some are much larger than the others; some far plumper, too. By all means choose the largest and fullest seed. The reason is this: When you break open a bean and this is very evident, too, in the peanut you see what appears to be a little plant. So it is. Under just the right conditions for development this 'little chap' grows into the bean plant you know so well.

This little plant must depend for its early growth on the nourishment stored up in the two halves of the bean seed. For this purpose the food is stored. Beans are not full of food and goodness for you and me to eat, but for the little baby bean plant to feed upon. And so if we choose a large seed, we have chosen a greater amount of food for the plantlet. This little plantlet feeds upon this stored food until its roots are prepared to do their work. So if the seed is small and thin, the first food supply insufficient, there is a possibility of losing the little plant.

You may care to know the name of this pantry of food. It is called a cotyledon if there is but one portion, cotyledons if two. Thus we are aided in the classification of plants. A few plants that bear cones like the pines have several cotyledons. But most plants have either one or two cotyledons.

From large seeds come the strongest plantlets. That is the reason why it is better and safer to choose the large seed. It is the same case exactly as that of weak children.

There is often another trouble in seeds that we buy. The trouble is impurity. Seeds are sometimes mixed with other seeds so like them in appearance that it is impossible to detect the fraud. Pretty poor business, is it not? The seeds may be unclean. Bits of foreign matter in with large seed are very easy to discover. One can merely pick the seed over and make it clean. By clean is meant freedom from foreign matter. But if small seed are unclean, it is very difficult, well nigh impossible, to make them clean.

The third thing to look out for in seed is viability. We know from our testings that seeds which look to the eye to be all right may not develop at all. There are reasons. Seeds may have been picked before they were ripe or mature; they may have been frozen; and they may be too old. Seeds retain their viability or germ developing power, a given number of years and are then useless. There is a viability limit in years which differs for different seeds.

From the test of seeds we find out the germination percentage of seeds. Now if this percentage is low, don't waste time planting such seed unless it be small seed. Immediately you question that statement. Why does the size of the seed make a difference? This is the reason. When small seed is planted it is usually sown in drills. Most amateurs sprinkle the seed in very thickly. So a great quantity of seed is planted. And enough seed germinates and comes up from such close planting. So quantity makes up for quality.

But take the case of large seed, like corn for example. Corn is planted just so far apart and a few seeds in a place. With such a method of planting the matter of per cent, of germination is most important indeed.

Small seeds that germinate at fifty per cent. may be used but this is too low a per cent. for the large seed. Suppose we test beans. The percentage is seventy. If low-vitality seeds were planted, we could not be absolutely certain of the seventy per cent coming up. But if the seeds are lettuce go ahead with the planting.

It is easy to get started with your own water garden, but first you are going to need some water gardening supplies. Most garden centres will carry everything you need. They will have water gardening supplies to suit any budget. When deciding which water gardening supplies to buy, it is a good idea to select the best equipment and materials you can afford.

You do not have to be in a rush to buy all of your water gardening supplies at once. If you have to make provisions for cables or plumbing, do that first. Then you have to decide if you want to excavate, or have a container water garden. If you use a container, such as a half-barrel or a tub, you will likely need a liner to prevent leakage, rusting and leaching. If you excavate, you have the choice of using cement, a liner or a preformed pool. Few water gardeners today use cement pools. Liners are much easier to install and not nearly as costly. However, because liners can be punctured by sharp stones, you will have to put down an underlay of specially manufactured material that can be purchased where you buy the rest of your water gardening supplies. You can also use a preformed pool. This is easy to install and very durable, but it gives you fewer options for shape and design than the use of a liner does. Liners are also easier to disguise so that your water garden has a "natural" look, than a preformed pool.

Perhaps you want a fountain or a cascade as the highlight of your water garden. The water garden supplies you need for such a feature include hoses, connectors, taps and couplings. You can also install lights to illuminate your fountain or cascade.

Next on your list of supplies are pumps and filters. Surface pumps are used only for very large pools, so in all likelihood you will want a submersible pump. There is a wide variety available. You have three basic types of filter to choose from. Mechanical filters remove debris and particles by passing water through a filtering medium. Biological filters use bacteria to digest waste materials in the water. UV filters use ultra-violet light to kill algae and other micro-organisms.

You now have to decide on the dcor of your water garden. Do you want it to be formal or informal? Do you want the theme to be Classical, Oriental, or something else? Do you want to edge it with brick or stone? Do you want to add decorations and ornaments? Finally, what plants will go into your garden? All this must go on your list of water gardening supplies.

The art of bonsai sculpting is an ancient one in Japan. The bonsai plant itself is not usually a dwarf plant. They are usually ordinary trees, or even plants, but they have been pruned and trained for a certain effect that is pleasing to the artist. The mini bonsai is basically just a regular bonsai, but even tinier, like a pocket version.

This can be of just about any variety of plant you can think of. Traditional bonsai plants make excellent mini bonsai, but you can also use non-traditional plants as well. Do your research on what are the easiest to cultivate and how to care for them and you will be well on your way to raising one.

How to Care For Your Mini Bonsai

These can be fairly easy to care for; simply care for them just as you would care for a larger bonsai. If you have a mini bonsai of a succulent variety, you would maintain it just as you would a larger succulent bonsai — with sandier soil and less watering. If you have a deciduous variety, it will need a bit more water and richer soil.

The same repotting guidelines apply to mini bonsai, too. If you do repot yours, do it either a month before or after its major pruning so that your mini bonsai doesn't suffer too much shock. Of course, since your mini bonsai is smaller, your pots will be smaller. Even the large varieties of miniatures don't take up much room!

Your mini bonsai will need sun just like any other bonsai. It will need a certain amount of sun, so just use common sense when establishing the needs of your mini bonsai. During the hotter summer months, your mini bonsai will need a little more shade, just to make sure the soil does not completely dry out.

As with the larger varieties it's good to pick the brains of those who have been growing bonsai for longer than yourself. Nurseries, bookstores, libraries, the internet, even your next-door neighbors might be able to offer worthwhile advice. Think about starting a club if there isn't one near you already.

Mini bonsai are great plants for those who want a little more out of bonsai. They can be more challenging than regular bonsai, simply because they're significantly smaller. However, if you take good care of your tiny pocket plant, it can provide you with an interesting new addition to your home, and help you hone and develop your bonsai pruning skills even more than you would be able to with a regular-sized bonsai.

Indoor gardeners love to propagate house plants. This could be because sometimes the plants grow large and, hence, need to be started again. The methods that are used for house plant propagation can be easy or difficult. There are different plants that can be propagated using plant propagation methods. Prayer plant is one such plant that can be used for plant propagation. The leaves of the prayer plant fold up when there is total darkness around. The method of undertaking vegetative propagation for the prayer plants is very easy. Plants propagate either sexually or asexually.

It has been found that it is impractical to produce house plants right from seeds. If they are grown from seeds then it takes a long time for the plant to grow. And the new plant that is created does not possess same characteristics as compared to the main plant. In case of vegetative reproduction, the new plant possesses exactly the same characteristics as the main plant. In a way the two plants turn out to be identical. This is because in vegetative reproduction the missing parts are regenerated. The plants that are produced may not necessarily possess equivalent abilities.

When plant propagation of prayer plant is undertaken, care should be taken that you start with strong plants. The tools that are used for cutting during the plant propagation should be clean and definitely razor-sharp. The medium that is used for rooting should be free from all kinds of diseases. The water holding capacity of this medium should be good. And the air spaces that are available ought to enable proper air circulation. During plant propagation the plant should be placed in bright light. The humidity level should be maintained at a high level. The leaves should be placed such that they do not come in contact with each other.

The medium in which the roots will grow should contain a large amount of moisture. But care should be taken that the medium does not become too wet. If the cuttings are placed in an enclosure then proper ventilation is required. The temperature of the rooting medium should be maintained from seventy-five to eighty degree Fahrenheit. In order to maintain a high level of humidity the temperature in the air should be maintained at a low level. When the new plants begin to grow after plant propagation they should be immediately transplanted into pots. In this way, plant propagation of prayer plant occurs.

Many Australian gardeners say Australia's gardening designs are "borrowed" from places like England and Japan. But Australia has many native plants that make the Australia gardening landscape unique. Those described here are but a few of many Australian plants available to gardeners. For more information on the Australia gardening landscape contact the Australian government's Department of the Environment and Heritage or the Australian Botanical Gardens.

The genus Acacia is important to the Australia gardening landscape because one of its species, the Golden Wattle, is in Australia's national floral emblem.
The Australians even celebrate Wattle Day of the first of September each year. There are almost a thousand species of Acacia in Australia, and they make wonderful garden plants. Their flowers are arranged in either globular heads or cylindrical spikes. Depending on the species, there can be as few as three individual flowers to over one hundred and thirty. These plants flower throughout the year. Regular pruning will help these plants live longer.

Leptospermum, commonly known as tea trees, are also popular on the Australian gardening landscape. They are so-named because early Australian settlers used the leaves as a substitute for tea. There are eighty-three species. The tea trees are excellent garden plants. They have a tight, compact growth that makes them good screen plants. They are hardy plants that thrive in most types of soil.

Among the most interesting plants in the Australian gardening landscape are the Kangaroo Paws. These unique plants are exported all over the world. Kangaroo Paws vary in height and colour depending on the species. The one called Bush Ranger has orange flowers that grow on stalks up to fifty centimeters tall. It is drought tolerant and can survive mild frost. The species known as Dwarf Delight has apricot coloured flowers on stalks up to eighty centimeters tall. This plant is known for its longevity. The Tall Kangaroo Paw has flowers in a wide variety of colours, but most commonly yellow-green. This plant is adaptable to a wide range of soil and climate conditions. It grows well in full sunlight or partial shade. The Red and Green Kangaroo Paw has brilliant red and green flowers on a stalk about a meter high. It is a short-lived plant that botanists treat as an annual. Another favourite is called Pink Joey. It has salmon-pink flowers on spikes about fifty centimeters long. It, too, is a hardy plant. The Black Kangaroo Paw likes the sun and does not grow well in cool climates. Its flowers and stalks are covered by a dense layer of black hairs. There is much more for the gardener to discover about the Australia gardening landscape.

Sometimes people have their doubts on how the vegetables are cultivated. Hygiene stands the prime area. Hence, people have now started cultivating their own vegetables maybe in their backyard, by purchasing land or in their homes itself. The climatic conditions suit a lot of vegetables in Ohio and hence, one may also come across a lot of vegetarians in the region. The gardeners or the people who are into vegetable growing generally go in for growing the vegetables after chalking out a plan considering the climatic changes the whole year round.

Vegetables

The basic necessity like onions and garlic too in found in abundance in the region. Peas and beans, corn etc is the favorites of the people residing in Ohio. Basically the experts in Ohio have taken up the work of educating the people on the importance of the vegetable soil and the vegetables on a whole. The compost gardening and the raised bed gardening are the two main types of gardening that are used. Compost or organic gardening helps in recycling your kitchen waste and at the same time provide high quality soil for the garden. Vegetables have benefits in growing in such a soil. Raised soil beds help in increasing the secretion of water. And the roots of the plants get all the nourishment that is required. The contamination in the vegetable garden too is avoided by the use of pesticides. Path is made for the excess water to flow off as excess water can kill the plant eventually. The herbs and the leafy vegetables are the most in demand in Ohio as there are a lot of vegetarians in that region. Potatoes and tomatoes are the other two vegetables that get the most attention in the state. The climatic conditions also suit the carrots hence; carrots too are seen growing in abundance in the region. The soil has the right content of phosphorus and nitrogen which thus works in favor of the vegetables. The temperatures too work in favor of the vegetables.

So now you've picked out what type of garden you will have, what the location will be, and what kind of fertilizer you need, now is the time to really get started in choosing your garden environment. First you'll want to choose what your garden barriers will be. What will separate your garden from the rest of the world? Next you'll want to choose the decorations and support for your plants. Often some kind of metal mesh is necessary to keep your plant standing up. You will also want to choose how much soil and fertilizer to buy, and how to arrange all the plants in your garden.

Choosing a border is actually a fairly important step in getting your garden started. It might not actually affect the well-being of the plants, but having a garden is a fairly aesthetic ordeal for many people anyways. So usually you will want to choose between metal and wood. You can stack up boards around the perimeter of your garden, and give it a rather nice cabin look. If you're looking for a more modern look, you can obtain some metal lining at your local home improvement store for rather cheap, and installation is medium difficulty.

Finding something nice-looking to support your plants can be a little bit more challenging. Sometimes a short metal pole can work well, but often for plants such as tomatoes you will need a wire mesh for it to pull itself up on. You can find these at any gardening store, usually pre-shaped in a sort of cone shape ideal for plants. The plant just grows up through it, and usually it will last until the plant is grown enough to support itself. After that you can take a pair of wire-cutters and just snip it free.

Deciding how much soil to buy can be slightly easier. Look up information on your plants and find out the ideal soil depth. Then dig out that much from your garden, take the measurements, and find out the exact amount of cubic feet of soil that you will need. Go to the store and buy it, preferably adding on a few bags just so you can replenish the supply if it compresses or runs out. If you live in an area where the ground is rough, dry, and barren of nutrients, then you might even want to add a few inches of depth to the original recommendation.

Arranging the plants is rather important to the success of your garden. I'm not talking about some kind of feng-shui thing, but depending on your watering, some plants might hog all the water and leave the other plants high and dry. Some plants have longer roots than others, and are more aggressive in the collection of water. If you place one of these plants next to a plant with weaker, shorter roots, it will quickly hijack the water supply for itself, and choke out the other plant.

I hope I've led you to realize that placement isn't the only important thing about a garden. There are many other factors that might not seem very significant, but spending a proper amount of time considering them could change the outcome of your garden. So if you're working on building a garden, use and reference you can (the library, the internet, and magazines) to look in to some of the factors I've mentioned.

There are a number of different types of bonsai trees available, but the bougainvillea bonsai is considered the one with the most differential character. The bougainvillea bonsai is a popular houseplant, and by nature it is a climbing plant, which can grow to be as large as four meters. The proper caretaking of the bougainvillea bonsai is an issue of great importance as regular maintenance is essential for keeping your bonsai healthy and looking its best.

Taking Care of a Bougainvillea Bonsai

Issues such as lighting, watering, temperature, feeding, repotting, and styling, are all of great significance and importance in regards to the bougainvillea bonsai. As for lighting, this type of bonsai likes to be in full and direct sunlight, however like all bonsais you must be careful to not let the sun burn the rather delicate leaves of the plant. In regards to temperature settings, the bougainvillea is an evergreen species, which means that in colder climates it will become deciduous. This type of bonsai should be kept at a temperature of 49 to 54 degrees Fahrenheit if possible, and never below 45 degrees.

When it comes to watering, the bougainvillea bonsai likes it dry for the most part, in that it only needs to be watered sparingly. However, during the flowering period, the bonsai will require an increased amount of water. The recommended feeding for this bonsai ranges from every week to 10 days to two weeks. You should basically be able to tell whether or not your plant needs more feeding. In terms of repotting the plant, you should do so every two to four years, with the best time to do so being in spring, before new growth, although early fall is a reasonable time as well. In regards to the styling of the bougainvillea bonsai, this can be done basically at any time, but if you are hoping for flowers, you should avoid pruning all of the roots.

These bonsais flower most heavily in winter and early spring, with a few that will put forth scattered clusters all year round. The colors are usually found in tones of purple, lavender, carmine, scarlet, red, pink, orange, yellow and white. Single and double forms are available, with the double forms tending to carry their blooms near the end of the stems, rather than distributing them evenly over the plant.

The image of a cottage as opposed to a house is most complimentary. When one thinks of a cottage, the image is of comfort, beauty and serenity. A cottage design garden is all of those things and more. A garden can make a dramatic difference in any property and a cottage garden design could make a dramatic difference in the atmosphere and appearance of any property. A cottage garden design might first bring images of a very tidy garden, but a cottage garden design is more than just a very neatly kept garden space.

The cottage design garden is not limited to the cultivated areas around a small cottage. A cottage garden design could be established around many different types of structures and there could be this type of design that is not established around any kind of structure. A cottage design garden can be defined by the structure and the plants in the garden rather than the structure around which it is established. The name cottage garden design refers to a particular style of garden. This garden style has been used for thousands of years, and this type of garden is still currently used.

A Cottage Garden Design Has A Fruitful History

A cottage garden design developed during the time when international trade became possible, and people started to find a vast variety of plants from different places. Some of these plants grew better than others, and some of these plants lasted longer than others. People had many choices that they never had before. Simple gardeners first used these plants that looked great and had stamina in their gardens. The new and different plants that looked great soon became popular in the gardens of the people who had more beautiful homes and estates.

Some people still have this type of garden in their homes, but these gardens must be carefully tended. The plants are beautiful and not the easiest to cultivate. Busy people do not have hours to work in the garden. In the modern day, people are so busy that they do not have a great deal of extra time. They spend long days on the job and do not have a great deal of time after working hours to spend in their garden. They want to have a garden but one that is easy to tend. Many people do not have the means to employ experts to take of their gardens. People do not often cultivate cottage garden designs because they tend to use plants that are easier to care for and are native to their own area.

If you live in a dry and arid climate then your desert landscaping is going to take a little more planning than some other parts of the country. desert landscaping will have to work with a plan that includes only plants and trees that can survive with much less water than some other plants. There is no point in planting something if it can not sustain itself afterwards. So take some time with your desert landscaping plan and make sure that you have done everything suited to the climate.

You could spend the money to get better irrigation put in but the money will be great and the time will be all consuming. It is much simpler for your desert landscaping plan to just include plants that will thrive even in the hot sun all day.

What makes using desert landscaping friendly plants so great is that not only will these plants do well even in the hot sun they will also be able to thrive in poor quality soil. This is a much needed quality because places that have so much sun tend to have poor soil as well. So in essence you are killing two birds with one stone as they say.

Here are some wonderful plants that you can use in your desert landscaping:

Longwood Blue bluebeard
This is a shrub, it is deciduous and it will grow back each and every spring. It will always come back healthy and happy and this makes it perfect for desert landscaping. It is not a tiny shrub, it will grow to be anywhere between 3 and 4 feet high with a width of about 2 feet. This is a lovely plant to use in your desert landscaping as it is not only beautiful with its pretty blue flower clusters and silver foliage, it is also very fragrant.

Autumn Joy
This is a wonderful perennial that you can plant for your desert landscaping. With this choice you will have great leaves in pretty whorls. These leaves can be any number of different colors and can be bought to go with any desert landscaping design. This plant is the ultimate for desert landscaping because it can grow in rock gardens with ease. This lovely desert landscaping plant also has a unique and interesting flower unlike any other I have ever seen. These small flowers grow in clusters and they can be a few different colors and shades. The most common are yellow, orange and red and pink. If you plant these in your garden you will have butterflies around all of the time and they make for lovely entertainment on their own.

When the East meets West, instead of fusion we sometimes get confusion. But, once that moment is passed a new awareness creeps in and the joys of a new culture spread before us. So, it is with Japanese gardens. The ideal Japanese garden is a statement of simplicity and form, often requiring a complete change of mindset to establish, but later finding it to be simpler to maintain and appreciate. Japanese gardening supplies will include many materials we commonly don't think are gardening supplies, because of the attention to detail, simplicity, and form.

Rocks Are Garden Ornaments?

While a Western garden may appreciate a big boulder as a central point of a garden, the Japanese garden relies on more subtle Japanese gardening supplies. Often, the Japanese use flat stones or variously shaped boulders with lichens and patinas to build a garden structure with beauty. In addition, the use of sand in a Japanese garden is used with curved rake patterns to represent the ocean. But, sand is hardly what we think of as a surface material for a garden. In Japan, it is used for just that.

So, you may end up finding yourself at a rock quarry more than a home and garden store to find just the perfect Japanese gardening supplies.

Water

Since Japan is an island nation, they do have many beautiful water gardens. Since the Japanese link to accentuate the natural world, things like minerals, water, sand, and plants are usually the focal points of the garden. A small pond here, or trickling waterfall there, and this element can take one into a meditative state all by itself. If one can't build a pond, bamboo containers filled with water plants and a pump can help bring that element into the Japanese themed garden.

Sculptures

One of the ways Japanese show their love of form is through artfully sculpturing the terrain into artificial hills. Placing mounds of earth here and there is a lovely way to bring a natural beauty to a backyard garden.

However, there are many Japanese gardening supplies that consist of tiny pagodas, lanterns, and screens. None of these should detract from the overall serenity or naturalness of the garden, though, to maintain its Zen-like state of peace. In Japan, gardens are meant to merge the spiritual with the physical, and can be still be done by picking Japanese gardening supplies that bring these aspects into the garden.

Trees and plants

Most Japanese trees and plants for the garden are quite understated by Western standards. Japanese maple is a favorite of Westerners because of its showy bronze and red leaves. Bonsai can seem tiny and plain by Western standards, but are perfectly at home in a Japanese garden. Don't limit your choices to bushes and trees. Add mosses and creepers to your Japanese gardening supplies to add naturalness to stone steps or stone sculpture.

Most popular method for plant propagation for the amateur gardener with most success is Stem Cutting. For stem tip cutting you will need the rooting hormones, continuous moisture or misting, light and necessary temperature.

To do the stem tip cutting propagation you should cut the section from an un-branched stem. Approximately the length should be 6 inches below the leaf axil. You should remove the 2/3 of the leaves and dip the barren base into the rooting hormone and place it in the mixture of a very porous peat and sand mixture. You should always keep the cutting moist. Keep the cutting enclosed so that the moisture level is constant. If you enclosed the cutting from time to time you have to air the cutting. It is very important to aerate the cutting. You should keep the cutting away from the direct sun light. It will harm the cutting. There should not be any condition that will produce stress for the cutting. In order to be successful in stem tip gutting propagation you could use an old fish aquarium with a glass cover. You should check your cuttings periodically. You should be very careful when you look for the rooting. You should remove the cutting only when you find fibrous feeder roots. You should put the cuttings in a loose but organic potting soil. This stimulates the root development. You should keep the cutting moist and put it in shaded area as to reduce stress.

The above mentioned steps are representative. The rooting period will vary. The type of plant you want to propagate, the time it will take to root, the kind of root growing hormone you will need and the time of the year is very critical and very plant specific. Normally herbaceous plants roots very quickly and easily. The woody plants take much longer and they need stronger rooting hormones. The time of the year is very critical for the woody plants to propagate. You can use either herbaceous, semi-hardwood or hard wood conditions to root the cuttings depending on the specific plant.

There is nothing nicer than receiving a gift relating to one's passion. If your loved one's passion is gardening, then show your thoughtfulness by giving a gift that will be truly appreciated.
There are so many great gardening gifts that the only constraint is your own budget.

If your budget is small, go for things like gloves, kneepads or even a shady hat. A pretty pot (or a watering-can) filled with a small bag of potting mix, a packet of bulbs, some gloves and a small trowel or other tool will be received with delight by most gardeners. There are many hand tools at hardware stores that are reasonably priced.

If you feel that is too ordinary, how about a subscription to a gardening magazine? A tiny bit more expensive perhaps, but it will give twelve full months of delight. A book on gardening is another idea, but make sure your recipient does not already have the one you choose. Books are often heavily discounted at Christmas time, so you may get a bargain.

On the other hand, a pot that contains a flowering plant is usually a welcomed gift. Be sure to choose a plant that is suited to your climate. Sometimes plants are sent from tropical to temperate zones and kept in artificial conditions in the store. These plants will not do well once taken from their environment. Shrub roses are hardy and attractive and grow in many climates. Tulips do best in the cooler climate.

If your budget is strong, a more expensive tool may be appropriate. A pull-trolley is easier to use than a wheelbarrow and, like some electric tools, is still not terribly expensive. Small electric tools such as whipper-snippers can retail for as little as $20.00. Or if your friend has a hose but not a hose reel, then that would be a more useful gift that he would truly appreciate.

Automatic lawn mowers, electric cultivators, hedge trimmers and brush cutters are in the more expensive price range and you are the only one who can decide whether that is an appropriate gift. However, when the recipient realizes you have given a gift that complements his passion, expensive or not, it will certainly become the best gift
your friend has ever received.

The Montana state university has been providing information on the Montana vegetable growing for years. Studies have come up with the best answers to the most commonly faced problems, the Mont guide which is one of the experts' guide helps one understand the kind of soil and vegetable that he deals with. The experts and the agents help the people who are into the vegetable gardening business. According to the weather that the state of Montana faces, the same way, the vegetable gardening is chalked out for the people. This way, the individual gardener has a certain idea of the cultivation of his vegetables.

The gardening

One good thing about the state of Montana is that the dates where in the frost sets in are marked. Hence there aren't any chances of the untimely weather to act foul play. People wanting to get into the Montana vegetable growing first need to understand the soil, weather conditions and at the same time as little about the vegetables that he is interested to grow. In Montana transplanting works, hence, one must keep a track of the dates and calculate the time from the frost date to the spring accordingly to sow the seed. The time and the calculation helps in getting a good reap from the cultivation. Horticulture is quite famous in Montana. The Montana gardeners have their own jot downs wherein they make their mark on the vegetable's size, color etc and thus calculate and sow accordingly. Herbs are the natural choice considering the climatic conditions, but different types of plants and trees are on rise. The soil quality remains utmost; hence, the gardeners are assured. But nowadays, even the compost as well as the raised bed style has been in great use. Considering the climate, one must keep it warm in order to get a good reap. Water and sunlight remain the main necessities that need to be fulfilled. Fertilizers and pesticides need to be provided every now and then for reasons to keep the vegetables healthy. Taking the help from the practical guide to the Montana University is advisable.

Soil primarily had its beginning from rock together with animal and vegetable decay, if you can imagine long stretches or periods of time when great rock masses were crumbling and breaking up. Heat, water action, and friction were largely responsible for this. By friction here is meant the rubbing and grinding of rock mass against rock mass. Think of the huge rocks, a perfect chaos of them, bumping, scraping, settling against one another. What would be the result? Well, I am sure you all could work that out. This is what happened: bits of rock were worn off, a great deal of heat was produced, pieces of rock were pressed together to form new rock masses, some portions becoming dissolved in water. Why, I myself, almost feel the stress and strain of it all. Can you?

Then, too, there were great changes in temperature. First everything was heated to a high temperature, then gradually became cool. Just think of the cracking, the crumbling, the upheavals, that such changes must have caused! You know some of the effects in winter of sudden freezes and thaws. But the little examples of bursting water pipes and broken pitchers are as nothing to what was happening in the world during those days. The water and the gases in the atmosphere helped along this crumbling work.

From all this action of rubbing, which action we call mechanical, it is easy enough to understand how sand was formed. This represents one of the great divisions of soil sandy soil. The sea shores are great masses of pure sand. If soil were nothing but broken rock masses then indeed it would be very poor and unproductive. But the early forms of animal and vegetable life decaying became a part of the rock mass and a better soil resulted. So the soils we speak of as sandy soils have mixed with the sand other matter, sometimes clay, sometimes vegetable matter or humus, and often animal waste.

Clay brings us right to another class of soils clayey soils. It happens that certain portions of rock masses became dissolved when water trickled over them and heat was plenty and abundant. This dissolution took place largely because there is in the air a certain gas called carbon dioxide or carbonic acid gas. This gas attacks and changes certain substances in rocks. Sometimes you see great rocks with portions sticking up looking as if they had been eaten away. Carbonic acid did this. It changed this eaten part into something else which we call clay. A change like this is not mechanical but chemical. The difference in the two kinds of change is just this: in the one case of sand, where a mechanical change went on, you still have just what you started with, save that the size of the mass is smaller. You started with a big rock, and ended with little particles of sand. But you had no different kind of rock in the end. Mechanical action might be illustrated with a piece of lump sugar. Let the sugar represent a big mass of rock. Break up the sugar, and even the smallest bit is sugar. It is just so with the rock mass; but in the case of a chemical change you start with one thing and end with another. You started with a big mass of rock which had in it a portion that became changed by the acid acting on it. It ended in being an entirely different thing which we call clay. So in the case of chemical change a certain something is started with and in the end we have an entirely different thing. The clay soils are often called mud soils because of the amount of water used in their formation.

The third sort of soil which we farm people have to deal with is lime soil. Remember we are thinking of soils from the farm point of view. This soil of course ordinarily was formed from limestone. Just as soon as one thing is mentioned about which we know nothing, another comes up of which we are just as ignorant. And so a whole chain of questions follows. Now you are probably saying within yourselves, how was limestone first formed?

At one time ages ago the lower animal and plant forms picked from the water particles of lime. With the lime they formed skeletons or houses about themselves as protection from larger animals. Coral is representative of this class of skeleton-forming animal.

As the animal died the skeleton remained. Great masses of this living matter pressed all together, after ages, formed limestone. Some limestones are still in such shape that the shelly formation is still visible. Marble, another limestone, is somewhat crystalline in character. Another well-known limestone is chalk. Perhaps you'd like to know a way of always being able to tell limestone. Drop a little of this acid on some lime. See how it bubbles and fizzles. Then drop some on this chalk and on the marble, too. The same bubbling takes place. So lime must be in these three structures. One does not have to buy a special acid for this work, for even the household acids like vinegar will cause the same result.

Then these are the three types of soil with which the farmer has to deal, and which we wish to understand. For one may learn to know his garden soil by studying it, just as one learns a lesson by study.

This is what gives Japanese gardens the look that they have. If you are going to start making a Japanese garden then you need to use some Japanese gardening tools.

To start with you need some hand snips, or Okatsune hand snips. The detail pruning that is seen in Japanese gardens isn't done by normal snips. These hand snips will help you make better pruning for you're Japanese garden. Other Japanese gardening tools are Japanese woodwork tools, planes, pull saws and chisels. These are specialty tools that will help the Japanese gardener. If you are just starting out in gardening you should start with Japanese gardening until you know what you are doing. Japanese gardening will be harder and you will need Japanese gardening tools to start your garden.

Before you buy any Japanese gardening tools you should buy books about Japanese gardening and see if you do have the skill to make a good attempt at creating a Japanese garden. Give yourself room to make mistakes and go back and fix them if you can. Making the right type of Japanese garden might help in picking out you're choice of Japanese gardening tools. You might want to make a Japanese sitting garden. These are good to view from inside a building or on a veranda. Or if you have a lot of land to change, you could make a strolling garden; this is good if you are going to view the garden from paths that wind through the garden.

If you are just starting out, you should work on small part of soil. Trying to get you're gardening skills up to par with normal gardening before you try your hand at the Japanese gardening. If you have the right Japanese gardening tools then you're gardening will go much more easily. But this is something that will take time. Make sure that you read the directions to each of the plants you are using. This will also help make sure that your plants have a good chance of growing. If nothing else make sure that you give yourself a chance to learn by using smaller plants and plants that you can test yourself on.

If you want to try out some Japanese technique then you can buy a small bonsai tree. These trees can be used indoors. You can also buy Japanese gardening tools for these trees. You can find these bonsai trees already grown, or you can grow them yourself from seeds.

The art of bonsai sculpting is ancient in Japan. The bonsai plant itself is not usually a dwarf plant, although it's grown in a tray or small clay pot. They are usually ordinary trees or even plants, but they have been pruned and trained for a certain effect that is pleasing to the artist.

A palm tree bonsai can be one of several varieties of palm trees. One popular variety is the sago palm. An interesting fact about the sago palm is that it is what scientists call a living fossil — that means that the structure of the plant has not changed since prehistoric times.

How to Care For Your Palm Tree Bonsai

Palm tree bonsai are fairly easy to care for. They do need to be sheltered from cold weather, but some of the various types can be hardy. You will need to treat it as if it were a succulent or a plant from an arid region.

A palm tree bonsai does not need to be repotted that often. In fact, your bonsai can stay in the same small pot for years if fed and watered correctly. If you do repot your palm tree bonsai, do it either a month before or after its major pruning so that your palm tree bonsai doesn't suffer from too much shock.

Palm tree bonsai can tolerate anything from full sun to full shade. It will need a certain amount of sun, so just use common sense when establishing the routine care of the tree. During the hotter summer months, your palm tree bonsai will need a little more shade, just to make sure the soil does not completely dry out.

Another aspect of this bonsai that makes it appealing to bonsai enthusiasts is its unique leaves. In the wild, they can have quite large leaves. The leaves are usually a dark green, and in full-grown trees, can be up to four feet long. Of course, with your palm tree bonsai, the leaves will be tinier, but they will still have the same basic shape and look writ small. Leaves also have a tendency to be longer if the bonsai is not grown in full sun.

These are great plants for those just beginning in the art of bonsai. If you take good care of your plant, it can provide you with an interesting addition to your home, and can help you develop your bonsai pruning skills along the way. Don't forget to check with plant nurseries, books at the library, magazines, and hobbyist clubs for tips. You might find that even your next-door neighbor has a bonsai garden!
