Clostridium difficile is often called C.difficile or even C.Diff. It refers to a bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon.

Usually C.Diff illness affects older adults in hospitals and typically occurs after use of antibiotic medications. Though, even this category is considered a high risk, studies show increasing rates of C.Diff infection among young and healthy people, who did not take antibiotics.

Symptoms. It is possible that you can be a carrier of C.Diff infection in your intestines and never become sick. Sadly, in this is a case, you still spread the infection.
The most common symptoms are:
Watery diarrhea three or more times a day for two or more days
Mild abdominal cramping and tenderness

These symptoms of mild to moderate infection develop after starting a course of antibiotics (usually during 5 to 10 day period). But in some cases, they also may occur anywhere from 1 day to 2 months after.

In severe cases of infection people tend to become dehydrated. This may warrant a hospitalization. C.Diff causes the colon to become inflamed (colitis) and sometimes may form patches of raw tissue that can bleed or produce pus (pseudomembranous colitis).
In this case symptoms are:
Watery diarrhea 10 to 15 times a day
Severe abdominal cramping and pain
Rapid heart rate
Fever
Blood or pus in the stool
Nausea
Dehydration
Loss of appetite

Causes. As stated before, C.Diff infection is usually associated with recent antibiotic use, occurring in hospitals, where a much higher percentage of people carry the bacteria.

Though, studies show increasing rates of community-associated C.Diff infection with people who would traditionally not be considered a high risk (e.g. children and people without a history of antibiotic use or recent hospitalization). At the same time, C.Diff bacteria can be found everywhere — in soil, air, water, human and animal feces, and food products, such as processed meats. Keep in mind, that a small number of healthy people naturally carry the bacteria in their large intestine and don’t have ill effects from the infection.

Treatment. First of all, consult with your doctor, who will probably urge you to stop taking the antibiotic that triggered the infection. Depending on the severity of your illness, treatment may include:
a) Antibiotics. Yes, as strange as it sounds, you can treat C.Diff, caused by antibiotic with another antibiotic. But these antibiotics keep C.Diff from growing, effectively treating diarrhea and other complications.
b) Surgery. For people with severe pain, organ failure, toxic megacolon or inflammation of the lining of the abdominal wall, surgery to remove the diseased portion of the colon may be the only option.

If a tiny blood vessel breaks just underneath the clear surface of your eye, you may not even realize it happened, until you look in the mirror. This condition, when the white part of your eye becomes bright red, is called a subconjunctival hemorrhage.

It often occurs without any obvious harm to your eye. Here is the good news: usually subconjunctival hemorrhage is completely harmless and with time (around two weeks) disappears without treatment. You should not be experiencing any pain and change in your vision.

Symptoms. The most obvious and scary sign is a bright red patch on the white (sclera) of your eye. You might also experience a scratchy feeling on the surface of your eye.

Causes. As many people don’t notice exact moment when subconjunctival hemorrhage appears, causes are often unknown. But the following actions may result in rupturing a small blood vessel in your eye:
Violent coughing
Powerful sneezing
Straining
Vomiting
Roughly rubbing your eye
Trauma, such as a foreign object injuring your eye

Risk factors. Anyone can experience a subconjunctival hemorrhage, but some people have higher chances. Risk factors are:
Diabetes
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Certain blood-thinning medications, such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven) and aspirin
Blood-clotting disorders

Treatment. No treatment is required. This is the case when time does heal. The subconjunctival hemorrhage should clear on its own after a week or two. In the meantime, you can use eyedrops, such as artificial tears, to soothe any scratchy feeling you have in your eye.

When was the last time you thought about your potassium levels? Well, probably not recently enough. And that’s a shame, because potassium is very important for muscle strength, nerve functioning, and a healthy cardiovascular system.

Good news: you can get this nutrient from a lot of kinds of delicious foods. Bad news: even if you get the recommended 4,700 mg per day, you still might have a deficiency.
The tricky thing is – the more sodium you consume, the more potassium your body excretes. And the deficiency of potassium levels might be hard to notice. But you should definitely have your levels tested if you have these symptoms:

You are always tired. Every cell in your body needs the right amount of potassium to function. And a long time deficiency can result in generalized fatigue. If you find yourself tired even after a good night of sleep — low potassium levels might be a reason for it.

You have high blood pressure. Potassium helps relax blood vessels. Deficiency leads to constriction, which causes blood pressure to soar.

You eat primarily out of bags and boxes. As much as it is convenient — it is not the healthiest option! Consuming processed foods almost ensures that you have low potassium. This type of food contains high levels of sodium, which doesn’t help the potassium you’re eating to remain in your body.

Your muscles feel weak or crampy. Aches or even spasms are never a good sign. If you are getting them, your potassium levels are definitely should be tested.

Your heart skips a beat. This is a cute thing to sing songs about, but not that cute to experience in real life. Lots of things can cause skipped beats or palpitations and low potassium is one of them.

You feel faint or dizzy. This is not likely to be the first symptom you experience. But low potassium might slow your heartbeat just enough to make you feel like you’re going to pass out. If you experience this, make an appointment with your doctor right away.

Constipation, bloating or/and abdominal cramping. These are the most surprising symptoms of them all! But low potassium levels have an effect on your entire body and digestive system is no exception. Though, a potassium deficiency is definitely not the only thing that will make you feel puffier than usual.

We have already discussed the problems that may arise if you have low potassium levels. But high potassium level is also not a good thing to have. Yes, to be healthy you need just a perfect level of this essential electrolyte in your body. This mineral is particularly important for your nerves and muscles (including your heart).

A condition that occurs when your blood contains too much potassium is called hyperkalemia. And it is serious.

Causes.
Kidney failure. When your kidneys fail, they can’t remove extra potassium from the body.
Heavy alcohol or drug use.
Overuse of potassium supplements
Use of certain chemotherapy drugs

Symptoms. This depends on how high is your level of potassium. You may not experience any symptoms if it is higher than normal, but not too bad (you should treat the condition anyway). If your potassium levels are high enough to cause symptoms, you may have:
fatigue or weakness
a feeling of numbness or tingling
nausea or vomiting
problems breathing
chest pain
palpitations or skipped heartbeats

Diagnosis. Your doctor will routinely perform blood tests during your annual checkup, so don’t miss it, even if you feel fine. Let us stress again: you may not be aware you have high potassium levels until you start developing symptoms.

Treatment. Usually, treatment for high potassium levels aims to help your body get rid of the excess potassium quickly and to stabilize your heart. This can be achieved with the help of proper medication.

If you have high potassium due to kidney failure, hemodialysis is your best treatment option.

This is a life-threatening illness that develops when the chemicals the immune system releases into the bloodstream to fight an infection cause inflammation throughout the entire body instead.

Symptoms. There are three stages of sepsis: sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock.
Seek immediate medical attention if you have any of the below symptoms:
a fever above 101ºF or a temperature below 96.8ºF
heart rate higher than 90 beats per minute
breathing rate higher than 20 breaths per minute
probable or confirmed infection

Causes. Sepsis can be triggered by any infection, but some are more likely to be the cause. Such as:
pneumonia
abdominal infection
kidney infection
bloodstream infection

Risk Factors. Anyone can get sepsis, but some people are at higher risk. Such as:
young children and seniors
people with weaker immune systems, such as those with HIV or those in chemotherapy treatment for cancer
people being treated in an intensive care unit (ICU)
people exposed to invasive devices, such as intravenous catheters or breathing tubes

Treatment. Sepsis must be treated immediately, as it can quickly progress to septic shock and result in death. Doctors use a number of medications to treat sepsis, including:
antibiotics via IV to fight infection
vasoactive medications to increase blood pressure
insulin to stabilize blood sugar
corticosteroids to reduce inflammation
painkillers

Patients with severe sepsis may also require:
large amounts of IV fluids
respirator for breathing
dialysis, if the kidneys are affected

Once again: sepsis is a condition that must be treated immediately and by medical professionals. The earlier you seek treatment, the greater your chances of survival.

If you ever see blood in your stool, it gets scary. But it is important to know, that is not at all necessarily a sign of a serious medical condition!
Below we have listed a few causes that can result in blood in your stool:

Anal Fissure. It can easily occur if you have a tight sphincter tone. As a result your muscles don’t relax as appropriate and you get a small tear in the tissue lining of the anus. This injury results with the presence of blood in your stool.

Piles (Hemorrhoids). If you have hemorrhoids, mild bleeding may occur. Most probably you would also have a painful feeling and some degree of itchiness. Hemorrhoids appear as clumps or masses of tissue in the anal canal.

Anal Fistula. It is described as a small channel that forms between the skin near the anus and the anal canal. It causes a painful feeling and, in some cases, persistent drainage. Sadly, this medical condition requires surgery as it’s only remedy.

Gastroenteritis. This should become a concern if you are presented with bloody diarrhea. Other symptoms may include stomach cramps, moderately high temperature, headaches and vomiting. Gastroenteritis is an infection of the stomach and bowel. You should contact your doctor if presented with these symptoms.

Peptic Ulcers. It is often caused by the bacterial infection of Helicobacter pylori. Open sores present themselves in the lining of the duodenum (upper portion of the small intestines) or the stomach. Keep in mind that some medication (like ibuprofen and aspirin) can also cause peptic ulcers.

Diverticular disease. In its own diverticulara is not likely to cause any problems. But there is a possibility that it might get infected or bleed due to weakened blood vessels, therefore presenting as blood in your stool. Chances of getting Diverticular disease increase with age.

Bowel cancer (rectal or colon) or polyps. This is why checking with your doctor is very important! Although blood in stool doesn’t mean you have cancer, it is better to rule out this possibility, as rectal bleeding is the early symptom of bowel cancer. When the medical condition is determined at an early stage, in about 90% of the cases, the treatment will be successful.

Essential tremor a fairly common brain disorder, that causes a part of your body to shake uncontrollably. The hands and forearms are the most commonly affected areas.

While uncomfortable, it isn’t life-threatening and doesn’t cause any serious health problems.

Symptoms. You may experience tremors constantly, frequently, or occasionally. And they can range from minor to severe, appearing in one or both sides of your body.
There are two types of essential tremors:
Action tremors. This is the most common type, that presents when you are trying to do something, such as tying shoelaces.
Tremors at rest. They may occur when you are not doing anything.

Causes. The exact cause of essential tremor is unknown and it can affect anybody. Research is still ongoing. Please, keep in mind that there are many other reasons for the tremors, such as alcohol abuse, an overactive thyroid, a stroke, and many more, but those tremors are not characterized as essential tremor.

Risk Factors.
Age over 40.
Family history. Though, having a relative, who has essential tremors doesn’t necessarily means, that you will get the condition, too.

Treatment. As of now, there’s no cure for essential tremor, but symptoms may be relieved. The doctor should decide if your symptoms severe enough to be treated. Your options include:
Medication. Such as beta-blockers, blood pressure medications, anticonvulsant medications and mild tranquilizers.
Physical therapy. Certain exercises can help improve coordination and muscle control. Botox injections can also be done in your hands to weaken the muscles and minimize or stop shaking.

Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes a temporary weakness or even paralysis of the muscles in the face. It can occur when the nerve that controls your facial muscles becomes inflamed, swollen, or compressed. Bell’s palsy is named after the Scottish anatomist Charles Bell, who was the first to describe the condition.

This condition will not go unnoticed, as one side of the face droops or becomes stiff. Difficulty with smiling and closing your eye on the affected side may also occur. Rarely the both sides of the face are affected. Typically, people, who may experience this condition, are between ages 16 to 60. But it can occur at any age.

Good news: in most cases, Bell’s palsy is temporary and symptoms don’t last more than a few weeks. However, it can take several weeks or even months for the muscles in your face to regain their normal strength.

Symptoms. The symptoms usually appear abruptly after a week or two after a cold, ear infection, or eye infection. Other than the obvious sign that we already discussed, the symptoms may include:

drooling
difficulty eating and drinking
an inability to make facial expressions, such as smiling or frowning
facial weakness
muscle twitches in the face
dry eye and mouth
 a headache

Causes. Medical professionals still can not pin-point the exact cause of this condition, but it is believed that the viral infections become a trigger. The viruses that have been linked to the development of Bell’s palsy include:

herpes simplex, which causes cold sores and genital herpes
HIV, which damages the immune system
sarcoidosis, which causes organ inflammation
herpes zoster virus, which causes chickenpox and shingles
Epstein-Barr virus, which causes mononucleosis

Risk Factors:
pregnancy
diabetes
lung infection
family history of the condition

Treatment.
corticosteroid drugs, which reduce inflammation
antiviral medication, which may be prescribed if a virus caused your Bell’s palsy
over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, which can help relieve mild pain
using eye drops and an eye patch (for your dry eye)
placing a warm, moist towel over your face to relieve pain

Keep in mind that any and all of there or other types of treatments must be prescribed by your doctor! Do not self medicate. Though very treatable, Bell’s palsy is still a serious condition.

A blockage in the small or large intestine is called a bowel obstruction. It can be partial or complete and prevents food, fluids, and gas from moving through the intestines in the normal way.
The blockage may present itself with severe pain that comes and goes.

Causes.
severe constipation
tumors, which can block the intestine
scar tissue (adhesions), which often a cause for a small intentine obstruction
twisting or narrowing of the intestines, which also might be a result of Crohn’s disease
hernias
intussusception blockage, which happens if one part of the intestine folds like a telescope into another part
diverticulitis or inflammatory bowel disease, which causes narrowing of the intestine
cancer, which often presents in the large intestine

Symptoms.
Cramping and belly pain (around or below the belly button) that comes and goes
Vomiting
Bloating and a large, hard belly
Constipation and a lack of gas, if the intestine is completely blocked
Diarrhea, if the intestine is partly blocked

Diagnosis.
As usual, we stress that it must be performed by a certified doctor. They will gather information about your symptoms, any digestive problems and any procedures you’ve had in that area.
Other diagnostic tools:
Manual check of the belly for tenderness and bloating.
An abdominal X-ray, to find blockages in the small and large intestines.
A CT scan of the belly, to see whether the blockage is partial or complete.

Treatment.
Most bowel obstructions must be treated in the hospital. You will receive medicine and fluids through a vein (IV), a tiny nasogastric tube will be placed through your nose and down into your stomach. Don’t worry, it sounds much scarier that it actually is. This tube will remove fluids and gas to help relieve pain and pressure.

With severe blockages surgery is almost always necessary. This happens when the intestine is completely blocked or when the blood supply is cut off.

Keep in mind that if your blockage was caused by another health problem (such as diverticulitis), obstruction might come back if you don’t treat the underlying cause.

Barrett’s esophagus is a condition in which the cells that make up your esophagus begin to look like the cells that make up your intestines. This condition often develops after years of experiencing gastroesophageal reflux. It is important to discover this condition as soon as possible, as in some cases, Barrett’s esophagus can develop into esophageal cancer.

Unfortunately, Barrett’s esophagus does not have any specific symptoms. However, because most people with this condition also have gastroesophageal reflux, they will usually experience frequent heartburn. And you should contact your doctor immediately if any of the following symptoms occur:

having chest pain
vomiting blood, or vomit that resembles coffee grounds
having difficulty swallowing
passing black, tarry, or bloody stools

Causes. The exact cause of Barrett’s esophagus is not yet known. However, having gastroesophageal reflux puts you in the risk group. At this moment the theory is that the cells in the esophagus can become abnormal with long-term exposure to stomach acid. Although, people, who don’t have gastroesophageal reflux are not 100% safe. But they have 3 to 5 times less chances to develop Barrett’s esophagus than people with gastroesophageal reflux.

Risk factors. If you have gastroesophageal reflux symptoms for longer than 10 years, you have an increased risk of developing Barrett’s esophagus. Other risk factors are:
being male
being Caucasian
being over the age of 50
having H pylori gastritis
smoking
being obese

Treatment. It depends on what level of dysplasia your doctor determines you have.
No or low-grade dysplasia. Treatments that will help you manage your gastroesophageal reflux symptoms will likely be recommended. Medications include H2-receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors. You may also be a candidate for surgeries that can help you manage your gastroesophageal reflux symptoms.

High grade dysplasia. More invasive procedures might be recommended. For example, removing damaged areas of the esophagus through the use of endoscopy. In some cases, entire portions of the esophagus are removed. Other treatments include: radiofrequency ablation, cryotherapy or photodynamic therapy. Your doctor must decide which course of action is most appropriate for your condition.
