Every year before the Chinese New Year, me and my family will visit Chinatown at Eu Tong Sen street to feel the atmosphere of the Lunar New Year with streets lighting and decorations and of course to grab some CNY goodies at the various stalls at the Chinatown Bazaar.

Covering the entire stretch of Woodlands Terrace are a chain of food factory outlets supplying various kind of food, gourmet, snacks, desserts and of course those CNY goodies etc to restaurants, hotels, food-caterer and supermarkets.

Rice Dumpling

The Rice Dumpling Festival (端午节) or some call it the dragon boat festival occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, so it happens that I will eat some rice dumpling today. While eating the rice dumpings, my mind suddenly thought of Qu Yuan. The origin of rice dumpling actually came from commemorating the death of the poet, Qu Yuan who was also a minister of the ancient state of Chu during warring states period of the Zhou Dynasty.

Qu Yuan was in despair when Qin conquered Chu and committed suicide by jumping into the Miluo river. Many who admired him raced out in their boats to save him or at least try to retrieve his body. When his body could not be found, they made balls of sticky rice and threw into the river in belief that the fish would not devour the body of Qu Yuan. This is how the rice dumpling and the dragon boat race developed from.

Detian Waterfall (德天瀑布）

One of the scenic spots that I visited during one of my tour in China is the Detian waterfall which lies in Daxin county of Guangxi province about 145 kilometers (90 miles) from the downtown area of Nanning. Detian was known to be Asia's largest transnational waterfall as it is shared by both China and Vietnam.

Managed to try this out in a neighbourhood cafe called the Murphy's Cafe which was first established in the UK in the 60s with winning awards.

Their signature dish is the fish and chips which uses Canadian Arrowtooth fish which comes in normal battered ($16) and non-oily battered ($17). I tried the normal battered and it was crispy and not oily, and went well with the tartar source.There were also malt vinegar to sprinkle onto the thick cut chips to make them taste more 'British'.
