Something has been bothering me about blogger. I can't post from my phone. I used to easily be able to use the app on my phone to post pictures etc, but it hasn't been supported by iOS for some time. As such, I'm planning on jumping ship.

I've been using wordpress for a blog for my music and this has been very user friendly. Instagram is already vying for my attention and competing and with the blog so I'd like to remove any hurdles keeping me from the blog which has been running since 2008, I believe.

So, I'm currently in the process of transferring my posts to a wordpress site ..... MyLeakyWaders.wordpress.com

It will take some time to make it look like home. I really is like moving. You'll see boxes needing to be unpacked for some time and some things may not work for a while. I'm still inviting you over for pizza if you can ignore the mess. It is hard to leave blogger, but it is time. It's no longer doing it for me.

New water, new friends, new camera

With a sudden opening in my schedule, my habit of storing my fishing gear in the car paid off. Instaagram again gets a nod for connecting fly fishers. I connected with @hotdishflyfish recently and shot him a message. His work schedule usually results in free days/mornings, so we met for a couple hours on his local stream.

The water was new to me. It had plenty approachable holes and runs, but the clarity was a little too clear. Even with the overcast skies, the fish were jumpy. I managed a few flashes and finally landed a standard driftless brown.

Hot Dish spend the morning casting his Blue Halo with a nymphing rig. He had a few takes that were not sticks but nothing to hand. That was fine by him. Dry hands are warms hands in the winter.

We have a warm spell coming through. That should bring the trout out to feed especially as the snow melt leads to turbid waters.

On another note, I finally gave in and bought a camera other than my phone. We will see how it goes. I've always enjoyed taking pictures, so I think the Sony a6000 will do well for me. If not, you may see it re-listed on ebay :)

Winter Season Begins Jan 1st/8th

I found time to get out twice in the early winter season. The first day was a shot at some new water. There is so much water between Minnesota and Wisconsin. I've found some great streams, but it is really fun to try new things from time to time. In fact, in general, I prefer to fish a new stream than fish the same stream twice (unless it is a new section).

So, for my first day out in 2017, I found a new section on a this phenomenal trout map. I don't know who made it for Minnesota, but it is awesome. I love it. I'm hoping someone will make it for Wisconsin.

The section I fished had easement access but it was really hard to find so I stopped at someone's house to ask for directions. They were very helpful and said I could fish anywhere I liked. Score!

The stream has only a mile of publicly fishable land that had work done on it back in the 80s. A beaver did some work on it this last summer, but that is another story I'm sure.

Anyway, after finding the easement, I hiked my way down to the stream and found myself facing a phenomenal run and pool.

There was a nice undercut near the run so I threw a streamer through the run and caught a healthy driftless brown on my first cast. It is one of those sparsely spotted browns with good olive and gold color. It amazes me how variable these fish can look.

I got a new Patagonia hip pack. I love it. I'm a hip pack person for sure.

I fished down stream until I came to a long, slow, deep section. I started hoping over a few muskrat or beaver dens and quickly saw when the section is so deep.

A broad, sturdy dam was doing its job. I wonder how that affects the fish population in that part of the stream. Darker water. Deeper water. Bigger fish?

On my way back out, I hit a few spots I a spooked earlier and manages a gorgeous native brookie. There is something special about the native brookie. Sure they don't get as big as the big browns, but, man, I really love them.

It was a great way to finish a first day out on the water in 2017. My next outing would prove to be a bit tougher as far as fishing is concerned.

We recently had a bit of a cold snap in Wisconsin, as such finding open water was more of a task. I hoped a favorite stretch would be open, but it was much harder than I thought. I should have searched for a sunnier stretch of water. So all in all, no fish came to hand.

I threw streamers because I'm not that confident in my nymphing technique or skill.

You can see how sparse the pockets of water were at times. It made for a gorgeous day. At times, I was able to simply walk across slow runs because the ice was nice and thick.

A couple amazing finds were this frozen hawk. I think it is a Nrothern Goshawk, but if any of you know can identify it as another type, let me know! I looked closely, but left the bird to the wild.

It was surprisingly light weight for its size. I suppose that's the deal when you are a bird.

I also found this big buck. I presume is a hunter's lost harvest. a gorgeous rack, just squeaking out that 9th point.

By the time I got back to the car, I decided to leave the waders on for the drive home. My gators were frozen to my laces. My feet were warm though.

Once we have a slight warm up, the water will get a slight stain and the fish will get hungry. The bite will turn on again!

Early Adventures in Fly Fishing for Musky

It is pretty awesome when you move outside your fishing bubble and meet new people. You never know what you might learn. For instance, I learned I have a wadable stream not to far from where I live that supports a healthy musky population. I also learned how to tie articulated flies (which, by the way, big brown trout also seem to like).

The musky season in Wisconsin runs May through December. I didn't start my search until the last days of November. The last couple outings were in snowy cold weather.

I essentially spent time looking for dark water. Deep pools where big musky might be waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey.

Lots of bushwhacking and exploration over several short trips yielded no follows or fish seen.

Dead Dear Run is one of my favorite spots on this new found stream. Named as such for obvious reasons.

Lots of frozen guides and cold fingers until finally... finally...

I caught my first musky on the fly. He took it right at my feet. It was so fun to watch. No too big. Maybe a little over 25' (though, naturally, he gets bigger every time I tell the story).

Big hunks of meat for these big toothy fish.

Here is @normalicious showing off his o'pros dragonfly rod holder. they are handy in certain situations. I like when standing in a stream and tying on a new fly. Sometimes line get's caught up in it, but in general, it is a nifty too to add to the arsenal. easy stocking stuffer too.

Last Saturday, I got in two more hours before season ended in Minnesota's East Coast/Wisconsin's West Coast.

Courtney, @SculpinArmy, and hopscotched our away from run to run, pool to pool and tree stump to tree stump.

The overcast skies and mild weather were comfortable conditions for swinging large flies made of buck tails and rabbit strips.

We found plenty of easer smaller trout. Nothing spectacular, but fun. I was getting ready to announce, "You know, it is just great to get out one more time. It doesn't matter if we catch any big ones..."

And that's when I had a nice take. I was throwing an articulated streamer tied by Courtney. Light in color, fast in action.

One last outing before season ends

I met up with a new friend, Sculpinarmy on instagram, and we went to explore some new local water. We got great weather and so hungry browns.

The first frost of the year laced the trees. As it melted, it seemed to rain down on us even though the skies were cloudless.

We threw streamers into deep pools and enticed quite a few healthy upper teens browns out of the shadows to attack our flies. Few landed but great fun all the same.

On another note, the blogger app seems to be malfunctioning on the iPad and iPhone. I can't add anything but photos. My computer isn't working well so it is making editing this a bit tricky. Hope the formatting works okay.

On the Stream, Work Attire and All

I had a long break this afternoon so I took an hour to explore the closest stream to the office. 15 minutes from my door I have fishable water. That is pretty darn awesome.

The stream I fished is called Johns Coulee and is a tributary of a larger area stream. There are plenty of small pools that could hold fish. There are also plenty of trees as the entire section is wooded. However at the right time of year one can easily find reasonable casting room at the pools. I fished this section of the stream because I thought the headwaters were likely to be back to normal water levels. We had almost 5 inches of rain and some areas with up to 10 inches last week. The water level looked good however I think most of the fish were pushed out of their pools with the high flow.

It was clear the water had been out several feet at one time. I think this is an important stream for reproducing fish and as a fish refuge because of its consistently cool temperatures (58 degrees today) and good coverage. However I can't imagine one having a productive afternoon fishing Johns coulee Creek. It is a pretty stream.

It was great to be out on a cool early fall day. Great sun and strong brisk wind.

The biggest problem I have now is picking the burrs out of my dress socks.

I'm hoping to get out sometime in the next week or so. We are getting hit with heavy rains in the Coulee Region. I'm hoping to sneak out when the flows come down a bit. The big fish are probably starting to fatten up for winter.

These flies on my shelf at work keep whispering for me to get out!

8/9/16: Hopper Coulee Creek

I was able to get out for a few hours this week. I chose a stream that was well-known in the area and considered a class one stream.

There are a lot of access points along the stream at it is clear there have been plenty of stream improvement projects.

I did notice that one of the landowners updated their fencing which blocked off one of the access points and made a section of the stream a little difficult to pass.

Some of the signs were a little confusing indicating a possible harvest season but at the same time catching release only fishing. There was also a survey box asking about fish caught and kept.

I must say, I didn't realize the Black and Yellow Argiope lived in Wisconsin. The spiders are harmless but I must say the thought of accidentally walking face first into one of their webs is frightening.

I had a lot of luck casting hopper invitations. The grasshoppers are everywhere this time of year and even is the water temperature approached 65°, the fish were still seizing the opportunity to take my fly.

It's a beautiful time to be out on the water. The streams in the driftless area are easy to wet wade.

What is amazing is that I probably only fished three quarters of a mile of the stream in the several hours I was out. There is just so much water to explore in my area, I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to do it all. But I'm up for the challenge:)

The Beginning of My Driftless Wisconsin Exploration

Even before my recent trip to British Columbia which resulted in big fish on streamers and bountiful drive flyfishing, I think I have developed a natural expectation to always find fish each time I go fishing, even if it is a new stream it unfamiliar area.

I think the same held true when I went out fishing for a couple hours on Tuesday morning. I had a little bit of time to spare forgetting my son to his doctors appointment, so I found a stream on the map that was designated as class one waters meaning that it is capable of sustaining populations of naturally reproducing trout without the need for stocking, and I headed out the door. Much to my chagrin I found myself cornered into a valley where a bridge was out walking my way towards the stream about another 15 miles down the road.

There was a stream that had been meandering along the road as I drove through the cornfield blanketed valleys. It didn't look like a large stream, but presumably there were fish. I just had trouble finding access points. Eventually the stream went under the road and I noticed an old beat up sign on the telephone pole stating "public fishing grounds." That was the sign I was looking for. I charged around through tall weeds in raspberry tickets to find a stream slightly murky and shallow. The water was cold and there were definite signs of stream improvement projects, but this look like a section of stream that had been forgotten and possibly had a little too much cattle traffic.

I found another section and walked through the designated access point over the fence and pessimistically explored this text stream through the farm field. There were a few small runs but the depth of the water and pour clarity increased my doubt that I'll be catching any fish in the stream. I waved to the farmers he drove past smiling. With his grin because he knew my efforts were in vain?

As it starts to get hotter and closer to noon, I knew it was time to go. I also started thinking how I don't really have the right to have such high expectations for myself when heading out fishing on an unknown stream in a location that is, though not foreign to me, still new. The Wisconsin area of the driftless region is somewhere I've never fished before. There are literally, hundreds of miles of streams in the counties that surround me. I will never explore them all. As such, my approach to new streams really must be that of a person seeking exploration and education of new waters as opposed to grip and grin glory.

Driving back, I had my tenkara rod and fanny pack in the trunk. I decided to just pull off the road anytime I could see new sections of the stream to see how the depth and clarity changed as I got further downstream.

I pulled off at one bridge where there was a small damn creating a large pool downstream and a slow deep section of water upstream. The sun was high and the buzz of grasshoppers getting louder. After about five minutes of watching the water, I saw what may have been a rise.

A couple minutes later, with a heightened level of where Ness, I saw what definitely was a fish rise.I grab my gear out of the trunk and started charging through the grass that was easily up to my chest.

I pulled a respectably small brown trout out of the stream pretty quickly. Man did it feel good to catch my first Wisconsin trout.

I watched the stream a little while longer. There were ants and Beatles grasshoppers and caterpillars everywhere. This is hands-down terrestrial season. And then I saw a large arise about 30 or 40 feet upstream. I had a mini hopper tied on, my last one.

That was then that I got to feel the addictive shockwave that makes fishing with a tenkara rod so fun. I landed a healthy 12"+ brown.

Now, it really was time to go. I had decided I'd beat the odds. I was fortunate to catch one fish on the day like that, but I caught two and one of them was pretty nice fish.

I went home and found the stream on the map. It is classified as a class to stream, meaning there are some naturally reproducing trout but the stream still requires some stocking. The section I had found was very slow and deep water. I imagine this section is a perfect one for naturally reproducing brown trout that like to slowly swim up and sit dry flies. The water is so slow moving that it definitely choirs 4X or 5X tippet.

Driving home I decided I was going to make an honest effort to approach each stream with humility. As a Minnesotan transplanted to Wisconsin, I'm a foreigner in a strange land. Therefore, I've got to approach these Sconnie streams respectfully. They are a strange breed after all.

My New Fly Shop: The Driftless Angler

One of the exciting things about moving to any new area, is getting to know your local waters. I'm fortunate to have moved to central portion of the driftless area. What is even better, is that I am lucky enough to have a fly shop in my backyard. Not literally in my backyard, but about 30 to 40 minutes away.

The Driftless Angler is a shop owned by a husband and wife duo who not only run the shop, but take turns guiding anglers throughout the region. In the three counties that surround the fly shop, there are over 250 miles of trout streams to explore. As a newbie to the Wisconsin Driftless Area, any help I can get it I'll take.

The shop is located in Viroqua, Wisconsin. A very cute, small, granola, organic farming town. The shop itself is also very well done. They have a great selection of clothing and equipment. They have a wall full of flies and a women's flyfishing section which I've never seen rivaled.

I'm very thankful for the regularly updated online and on the wall fishing reports.

And I must say that I'm a little jealous that they have to Derek DeYoung paintings adorning their walls.

One of the popular nymph patterns here in the driftless area is the pink squirrel. It seems this has become the mascot of the shop.

I first learned about the Driftless Angler Fly Shop through the movie "Heart of the Driftless" which I believe made an appearance on the fly fishing film festival.

So all in all, it is great to have a neat shop nearby that I can lean on for intel and good equipment when needed.

If you ever are driving through western Wisconsin, try and add this to your list of places to stop.

Fly Fishing British Columbia and Alberta

Most of the time, going fishing means the morning on the water or possibly a day trip. Either way, it is usually a short affair fit between other activities and obligations. Occasionally, we have the opportunity to do something a little bigger. Travel little further. Explore new territory.

My four years in Virginia Led to a lot of shotgun day trips with my buddy Kevin who goes by the name coastal explorer and has the blog sweeetandsalt.blogspot.com

For a while we have been talking about doing a bigger trip. And if we're going to do something big, we want to be really big.

After lots of planning and a few changes here there, we decided on five days of fishing in the Kootenays in British Columbia and southwest Alberta.

The native fish in this area are whitefish, westslope cutthroat and bull trout. Some streams hold brookies and others bug rainbows (like the crowsnest but it was blown out while we were there).

These are big bug fisheries. Golden stones, large mayflies, and frequent hatches. That's what feeds these big fish.

There are lots of great fly shops and guide shop options throughout the region. Fernie has two guide shops (we used Elk river guide company - our guide Darcy was great). There are also a couple nice shops with different feels in Alberta. The Coleman fly shop and cafe is a nice place to get coffee and breakfast before hitting the stream.

Oh, and if you are looking for a place to stay in Cranbrook where you can get a cozy room and awesome breakfasts, the Singing Pines Inn was phenomenal. It is basically a bed and breakfast which is a treat when on a trip where you are doing lots of walk and wading.

This was one of those trips that goes down in the books. Camping at the Fernie provincial park, getting up early for coffee and breakfast, all day on the stream, a late night meal ( hit up The Curry Bowl!!) then back to the tent. Over and over. It is fun when you get into a new rhythm and wake expecting to be on the stream. By the last day or so, we transitioned to that feeling.

I returned refreshed and longing to see my family but thankful for a great trip.

Bound for Fernie

Today I'm heading to British Columbia for a week of fishing! This is sure to be amazing. My Virginia buddy Kevin and I are flying in to Spokane and then driving north. Cutties, Bulls, and Bows await. I've scrambled to tie some stones, caddis and beetles. I'll buy the PMDs and anything else specific that seems to be biting. If I can, I'll share photos along the way.

After a week at the cabin with my son, I'll be missing him but technology is on our side with plenty of opportunity to FaceTime or call.

Morning on the Middle Branch

Sunday morning came sooner than expected. I was woken up by a 2-year-old boy with enough energy and joy to change the world for the better. Since, mom is into the second trimester and needs a little extra rest these days, we needed a plan.

What to do?

Pack some snacks.

Grab the fly box (the tenkara gear was already in the car).

Put on a Mickey hat, "puddle boots" and a "buggy"-catching sweatshirt.

I look down at the passenger seat. The tenkara emblem shines back at me through the dark rod tube.

This rod has been a phenomenal tool when fishing with David. With him on the backpack carrier, it allows for quick shots at fish while on our hikes.

Not even 8am and the sun was in full force. At our backs the entire trip, casting shadows across the pools, scattering fish this way and that. Even that was more fun for David. He could see brown trout darting this way and that searching for cover.

My bare forearms made for great horsefly bait. David collected the carcasses. These flies are like gold to him.

The stream has lots of structure thanks to the rehabilitation from TU and the help of the local landowners. I'm nothing but grateful for their permission to fish this stream.

We had a few fish on, but none to hand.

No matter.

Mom got to sleep.

The air was warm and fresh.

Daddy and David got to have a picnic on the tailgate.

You know the feeling when you get to hang out with someone much cooler than you? Like an athlete you emulate, or meet a famous musician, etc? That's what spending time with David is like. He is so much cooler than me. He just doesn't know it yet. One day he will, and that might be tough, but until then, we will soak up these mornings without reservation.

Journey to West Texas

David loves his Grandparents. All of them. But he was particularly excited to visit his Papa in Texas who is a cow doctor and works at the cow hospital (kind of).

We hopped a couple flights and spent a long Memorial Day weekend in Farwell, Tx. It is a small town on the border of New Mexico. It is dairy country. It is farm fields. There are trains. David's dream come true!

What a Saturday!

I walked into last weekend thinking it would be pretty routine. I walked out of it astounded. We packed in the good times.

Saturday morning, I met a new friend to explore our local "urban" carp waters. I walked an old family fiberglass rod down to the Zumbro, and we spent a few hours casting at carp. I grew up in Rochester, Mn, and we always referred to this river as the "Scum-bro." I still wouldn't drink the water, but, man, it was a gorgeous morning and we saw some BIG carp. No takes, but I did manage a nice smallmouth. There are, reportedly, some great stretches of the Zumbro where you can land anything from walley, northern, smallmouth and panfish.

After a few hours fishing, I walked home and met Sara and David for a trip to our local Transportation Fair. It was basically every type of utility and municipality vehicle you can think of, a 2-year old's dream come true.

David was so excited that nap time went out the window. I thought I could get him to nap in the car, so I packed a bag (Thirty-one - Thanks Sara) full of diapers, clementines, peanut butter crackers and other snacks, a tenkara rod, some water and flies, and we headed down to Preston, Mn to visit the National Trout Center.

Turns out it was "Trout Days" in Preston, their annual town festival. This meant antique cars, pigs and ponys to pet, tours at the historical society, and some yummy food. I had David in the back carrier most of the time until we walked down to a park to fish a little on the Root River and play at the park. No fish, lots of fun at the park.

When we finally got home around 5pm, I had a phone call from my brother. He was taking his 4-year old camping for the first time at Whitewater State Park. David had a long day in the sun, so he stayed home with mommy, but I drove over to the park for burgers, evening fishing and roasted marshmallows. My nephew has a blast. We found teh perfect spot to let him practice fly fishing for the first time.

The tenkara rod was a nice set up for him, and as the sun went down, the fish were getting bold, taking flies off the surface readily.

Whitewater is about 30 minutes from Rochester down County 9.

We got Colton to fight in a couple nice fish are this hole. The swallows were abundant above our heads. You can see their holes in the sandstone along the river.

I got home at about 1030pm and realized how big a day we all had. I had fished three rivers (Zumbro, Root and the Whitewater), spent time with my family exploring a new town (Preston) and the transportation fair. And enjoyed time with my brother and nephew. The joys of being back at home in the Driftless Area :)

Instagram Killed My Blog

I finally figured out one of the big reasons I blog less. Instagram. I really enjoy sharing the photos from different blog-worthy events, and the convenience and instant gratification of Instagram has wedged itself between me and this blog. Just like the remote control killed the TV dial, Instagram has taken a big bite out of my blog. That being said, minidiscs destroyed my CD collection for a mere winter and spring before I saw the light. (That is until Apple came along. But hey, I still buy CDs from time to time).

No skipping unlike your pesky, portable CD player with the 10-sec anti-sock.

They both have their rolls (blogging and Instagram). Now that I've identified the competition between the two I think I can make sure they are both getting the attention they deserve.

To that end, here are some (blog exclusive) photos from a short trip to the cabin this weekend.

Highlights include a hefty bass hitch David described as "very smooth." David's first Kayak ride (he liked it a lot, no tears despite the uneasy look on his face in the photo). More fishing shots with the three David's (grandpa, daddy, and little David.

Caught off the dock, and not in season. So we threw it back.

Cabin season begins

These are photos from last weekend. It was chilly but phenomenal. The rhubarb is in full swing in Minnesota and David for his first fishing outing of the season. The cold windy weather kept us away from the sunnies but we stumbled upon a treasure trove of frogs.

We got our share of cribbage in and I had a field day eradicating some buckthorn.

The weather is awesome this weekend so get out and enjoy it!!!

The Dry Season

Two more months of long hours and then I might be a bit more active on here.

I've got a trip to fish the Keys coming up in late July.

We'll be bathing in 40% deet and searching for baby pontoons and cookies.

In the off chance I make it on the water before then, I'll be sure to let you all know.
