THE VERSE:
“above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” eph 6:16

THE SHIELD:
Roman soldiers used several kinds of shields, but there were two that were most common. The first was a small round shield, two feet in diameter. It was secured to the arm by two leather straps and was relatively lightweight. This shield was used to block the sword blows of the enemy in handtohand fighting. The second shield was the thureos, which Paul refers to here. This shield was about two and half feet wide and four and a half feet high.

THE FAITH:

without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Heb 11:6

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

The Greek word for faith is pistis. It comes from the root word peitho, which means “to be persuaded, to convince by reason, to agree with evidence, to rely with inward certainty, to be confident.” Faith is based on the promises of God, which are so certain that waiting for them is not discouraging, and acting upon them is natural.

why is Faith important

Faith for salvation comes by hearing the Word of God. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). After salvation, faith grows as we engraft Scripture and act upon it.

Kij Notes:

Latin name for the shield was the scutum. Was covered in canvas or leather (fire resistant?) Had a metal boss in the center called umbo that could be used as a punching weapon up close. The shape allowed for overlapping shields to create a wall, protecting everyone behind. Famous formation of the testudo, which allowed legionnaires in the center of the formation to lift the shields above their heads to protect against raining missiles. Also large enough to completely hide behind to hide number of troops staging an ambush until up close.

To apply biblically, a single shield is good, but partner it with many others, and it becomes almost impenetrable.

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace Eph 6:15

Brad’s Notes

What is the Gospel of Peace?
Romans 5:9-11
Much more then, having nobw been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only [that,] but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. (NKJV)
Love.
Romans 8:37-39 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

False Peace
Mt 5:29 turn the other cheek
john 15:13 lay down your life for a friend
mt 21:12 money changers

How do we shod?
Prepare yourself to follow the Lord no matter what. This is not the grasping of doctrines but the laying hold of a clear understanding of the love of God.

What does this mean in your lives?

Are you prepared to serve God no matter what?
Seek him until you are

Roberts Notes:
Caliga: military boots worn by Roman legionaries and auxiliaries throughout the history of the Roman Republic and Empire. The boots were made from leather and laced up the center of the foot and onto the top of the ankle. Iron hobnails were hammered into the sole for added strength. Similar to the modern cleat.

Practical Military Purpose
Some historians credit footwear as one of the greatest reasons why the Roman Army was so victorious over its enemies. The Roman Soldier was equipped with footwear that had spikes on the soles which provided them a strong enough stance and balance that gave them a superior posture in battle on hills and uneven terrain. In martial arts, the stance is the most important move and is what is practiced first, for from the basic stance are all manners of kicks and punches launched!

Spiritual Warfare Application
Offensively this peace will help you to stand with your feet planted firmly on the Word of God and stay there, unmoved by the devil’s threats and lies. It will protect us when we walk through the rough places and keep us steady in the heat of a battle. It will keep our spiritual foes where they belong…under our feet.

Brad Notes:
Proverbs 11:4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.

Psalm 119:172 My tongue shall speak of Your word, for all Your commandments are righteousness.

1 John 3:4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

1 Corinthians 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.

Matthew 6:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Jeremiah 23:6 In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

2 Corinthians When a man is saved, God imputes the righteousness of Jesus Christ to him, or to say it another way, God counts him righteous.

Mt 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Rm4:19-22 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness”. (the quote is from And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness. Gen 15:6)

14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness

Kij Notes

Primary armor used by Roman troops was the lorica hamata, which is chainmail, basically. It was designed to be impenetrable to thrown darts (which were also carried by Roman soldiers, and could be thrown farther than javelins to greater effect sometimes too)

Armor required maintenance

Robert Notes

Vine’s defines the word as “the character or quality of being right or just”; it was formerly spelled ‘rightwiseness,’ which clearly expresses the meaning.”

King Ahab

John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

2 Timothy 2:26
and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

Col 2:8
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

John 8:31-32
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 18:37
Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice

Kij Notes:

“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth” Eph 6:14a

perizónnumi – to gird around myself or dressed in readiness
osphus – waist or loins
Could mean “wrap belt around the waist” or “dress for action around the reproductive organ”
Belt, cup, or tunic (underwear)

Armor of God is usually associated with armor, and that would be Roman armor at the time of the writing

Balteus in the 1st Century were used for carrying a dagger at the waist on one, with an “apron” hanging in front of the loins, and carrying the sword (sword of the spirit, v17) over the shoulder on another. Tunics were worn under the armor, as a basis, for warmth, and to help absorb shock from blows sustained to armor.

Going with belts, in John, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17, 15:26, 16:13). The Truth is inseparable from the Spirit. The Sword of the Spirit is carried by the Belt of Truth.

With a balteus, the soldier could be ready to draw his gladius or his pugio at a moment’s notice. The truth has to be in us for the Spirit to be with us.. (“He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” 1 John 2:4)

Robert notes:
The belt is not offensive.
The belt protects kidneys, hangs leather strips sometimes for protection, holds the armor together, holds the sword. Also, some armies would run a long thick chain through their belts to bind everyone together to prevent a retreat.

John 17:17
Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

How long do we gird?
Proverbs 3:3-4
Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.

Just for battle?
1 Peter 1:13
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ…

Be Careful
Romans 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

The Father empowers the Son

Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. (John 5:19)
