Super Macro

So, I used the Canon S3 IS at work today, and was blown away by the phenomenal quality of the camera. It has a mode on it called "Super Macro", well what it really should be called is "Super Fuckin' Amazing Macro" because it can focus so close in this mode that the lens can touch the subject. Here's an example:

I don't quite understand this, but the moral of the story is that I borrowed the camera for the weekend. I haven't borrowed a camera from work in ages, not since I got my first dSLR and started this blog I'll bet. Anyways, enjoy, I might have a few posts from this camera, as it is exciting me right now!

I'm going completely against the Rule of Thirds that I explained about in my past 2 posts. Any rules are made to be broken - you should just be aware of why you're breaking them. I personally like breaking rules, and I like this crop of the photo better than any other.

This was taken in Mississauga in the Erindale Park. Kevin and I went shooting there a little while ago and this came from that adventure. I should go back soon! It's beautiful there, and it's close to the UTM campus.

"Conrad stood there soaking wet in the swamp bog, wondering what the hell to do. It was a struggle to move twenty feet in this freaking muck. Every time he looked up, he was looking into a delirium of limbs, vines, dappled shadows, and a chopped-up white light that came through the tree-tops — the ubiquitous screen of trees with a thousand little places where the sun peeked through. Nevertheless, he started wading back out into the muck and the scum, and the others followed. He kept looking up. Gradually he could make it out. Up in the treetops there was a pattern of broken limbs where the SNJ had come crashing through. It was like a tunnel through the treetops. Conrad and the others began splashing through the swamp, following the strange path ninety or a hundred feet above them. It took a sharp turn. That must have been where the wing broke off. The trail veered to one side and started downward. They kept looking up and wading through the muck.

Then they stopped ...

There was a great green sap wound up there in the middle of a tree trunk. It was odd. Near the huge gash was ... tree disease ... some sort of brownish lumpy sac up in the branches, such as you see in trees infested by bagworms, and there were yellowish curds on the branches around it, as if the disease had caused the sap to ooze out and fester and congeal — except that it couldn’t be sap because it was streaked with blood. In the next instant — Conrad didn’t have to say a word. Each man could see it all. The lumpy sack was the cloth liner of a flight helmet, with the earphones attached to it. The curds were Bud Jennings’s brains. The tree trunk had smashed through the cockpit canopy of the SNJ and knocked Bud Jennings’s head to pieces like a melon." - Tom Wolfe [The Right Stuff]

Burial Ground

I visited Baysville on the weekend, and now that it's Friday I'm finally getting around to posting some photos from the adventure. Baysville has a nice little dam on the river that goes through the main part of town. Linsee and I went down there for an adventure. While sitting on the rocks with my camera, she pointed out a little crayfish on the rocks, but it swam away backwards as I slowly and cautiously approached it. Anyways, I went lower on the rocks and found this little grave yard of crayfish bodies. It was pretty creepy at first, but turned out some neat, and interesting photos. Here they are!

Here's a picture of PAlex, she's not been around dmilwain.blogspot for too long, so I unearthed this photo from last summer. It was taken in a grocery store in Wasaga Beach. Good times, hopefully we'll have some good road trips this summer too! Unfortunately I can't drive though, stupid expensive insurance. More from Jemo, I've been busy lately doing many different things, but my photos have been lacking as a result. I have loads to get ready and put up from my weekend up north. I went to multiple weddings over the weekend, and had an awesome time!
