Google, who purchased Motorola for patents and are being investigated for possibly abusing their patents in the EU are trying to shift the attention to Nokia and Microsoft.

Back in September, we heard how Nokia was using MOSAID to monetize Nokia’s intellectual property, asserting Nokia’s rights to their patents. Nokia’s IP helped bring in 600M from Apple last year as the Cupertino based giant was forced to pay for using Nokia developed technologies (some of which they tried to bypass by creating that external antenna and causing the antennagate death grip).

It’s worth noting that MOSAID has not sued Google, but Google calls this complaint a pre-emptive strike in case they do. If Nokia were to assert their IP rights, it could force manufacturers to produce WP instead of Android. The whole point of google stuff is to give it away in hope to reclaim money through serving you adverts based on your personal data, gathered best by your usage of their free products. Some from the Apple camp then suggest it is a very clever way to ‘give away’ a stolen product because you’ll recoup money by people using it. Most recently, Tim Cook was reported to have said “The worst thing in the world that can happen to you, is if you’re an engineer and you’ve given your life to something, is to have someone rip it off.”

Google has filed a formal complaint saying that this is Nokia and Microsoft working to raise the cost of phones for consumers. This apparently sidesteps promises the companies have made.

I guess for some, ripping off people is key to their business, such as the cloning of the popular iPhone with SGS and SGSII, riding on the coattails of iOS and propelling Sammy Droids to success. Were people forced to try to recreate their own original responses to everything, well then it might be harder and it might take longer to get anywhere :p. In all seriousness, kudos to Sammy and Google for seeing what’s popular and adapting very quickly to continually realign their products. If only our own Nokia could be as quick and nimble to adapt to continually changing trends. Sniff out what’s popular, what’s in demand and create those products in time as well as creating the more unique products which force other people to adapt and copy you.

Potentially there will be a Nokia tablet running W8. Yesterday, some videos appeared showing the latest iteration of the release preview in action.

First up, the promo. Nice song. Note, MS are still being coy about the desktop version of Windows 8 (NON Metro) – and will not look much like what we’re seeing now.

I really hope they continue to improve the trackpad interaction from what we endure with W7. It’s not so much trackpad that’s a hindrance, it’s the lack of optimisation. I’d say OSX Lion feels really nice to use with a trackpad (I prefer Windows with my Logitech MX Revolution – a neat freebie by Logitech customer service ).

Here’s a demo by TheVerge.

There’s a bit of hope here about MS working with trackpad makers to bring those touch gestures to a trackpad. Next hurdle is the traditional ubiquitous mouse.

I’m liking this consistent look between Windows 8 and Xbox Live dashboard. It seems clear and easy what goes where.

by TheVerge

One from CNET – I think it’s a reupload. Is this old?

Here’s a long video – looking at some metro apps.

Let’s take a look at this story from Barrons where according to their research, Lumia was a ‘hot phone’ 4-5 weeks after launch but had cooled down after in favour of the newer Droids, apparently taking the consumer mindshare.

http://online.barrons.com/article/SB50001424053111904081004577436772435135812.html?mod=BOL_twm_da

In terms of the USA and the Nokia Lumia 900 black and cyan frequently shuffle around the rankings, but have – amazingly, remained consistent in their placing. I have no idea what proportion of sales Amazon contributes.

During launch weeks, there is usually quite a lot of advertising going on around with the Lumias, but after that they kinda fizzle away. Where’s this rolling thunder we’re supposed to be hearing about?

Barrons also finds that regarding Windows Phone, it has not had a ‘significant’ positive inflection in global WP demand. Perhaps there is some significant positive demand in a rare few locations but what we need is for this to translate globally.

As such they are sceptical about ‘windows 8 handsets’. W8 handsets huh?

We have one more month of Q2 left.

WP Central reports that the following may be the screen resolution of the new WP8 devices.

480×640

480×800 (current)

720×1280

768×1280

There’s a quick comparison above. It would be nice to have some 720p displays from a Nokia phone – if at least just for bragging rights and to defend itself from simply being ‘just’ 800×480 in 2012.

You’ll notice the aspect ratio differences. There may be more.

However the standard 800×480 (X1.6) = 1280×768

VGA is quite odd. Could it work with portrait QWERTY monoblock?

I am not quite sure if this is as the description claims but it says this is recorded by the Nokia 808 PureView.

The sound quality is definitely very good – it’s probably a very difficult clip to get that stereo sound since you don’t have subjects moving from left to right or different sounds emanating from different directions.

I don’t understand what is being sang but it sounds beautiful; very calming.

by kaptengaban

I think this was shot at the same time but by a different device. You can see how much worse the second recording is.

Playing both very loud on some quality speakers, the first recording is very pleasant whilst the second one is painful to listen to.

Another thing the 808 PureView’s rich recording will excel in is recording very loud audio. Most phones will have crackling sound when the surrounding volume is very high.
