“I think you should supplement with formula.”  L&D nurse to a new mother, after only the second time the mother had breastfed her baby, shortly after birth.

“I’m so sorry you had to deal with that. It must have been very painful for you.” – OB nurse to mother who had some traumatic experiences associated with her birth.

“I will take a bite out of 3:00. How many bites did I get last time?”  - OB/Gyn to woman during a cervical punch biopsy.

“You just want permission to get high off over-the-counter drugs.” –  OB Nurse to pregnant mother over the phone, after mother had called a health line to inquire if cold/flu medicine was ok to take while pregnant due to a nasty cold she was experiencing.

“Don’t hold her too much, you’ll spoil her. ” – Postpartum nurse to mother, when the nurse handed the mother her newborn, to hold for the first time.  The mother was crying, overcome with emotion at holding her baby for the first time, 24 hours after her cesarean.

“Asian women don’t produce enough breast milk.” – L&D nurse to a new mother of Asian decent as she breastfed her baby for the first time.

“Please don’t blame my use of the vacuum for delivery for the injury your son has. His injuries are from your vaginal fat, not negligence.” – OB to mother when discussing injuries from a vacuum extraction that caused a NICU stay and permanent brain injury.

“If I had known she was that big, I would have scheduled a cesarean.” – OB to mother who birthed a nine pound baby over an intact perineum in 20 minutes.
