WHEN the boy band 1:43 started four years ago, quite a handful of detractors didn’t mince words in saying that they were K-Pop spin-offs, that they didn’t have the range to become successful music performers. They immediately dismissed the group as flash-in-the-pan, something that the audience would forget as soon as another hot male group comes along. Three best-selling albums, a string of monster hits, multi-million views of their music videos on Youtube, and hundreds of jam-packed performances across the archipelago later, 1:43 members Anjo Resurreccion, Argee Golding, Gold Aquino and Yuki Sakamoto have not only proved their detractors wrong. They have also exceeded expectations by become one of the country’s most successful (and most desirable) music groups in recent memory.

“We didn’t allow the hate to affect us,” says Yuki. “What has been important to us is the music. We know in ourselves that we have always been hungry to learn and improve every step of the way. The goal has always been to give our audience the best performance that we can deliver.”

This focus on learning and growth shows in their latest album, #KalyePop,(KPOP) released under MCA Universal. While the record still carries the “kilig” ballads in the vein of ”Sa Isang Sulyap Mo” (hailed as Song of the Year by 5th PMPC Star Awards for Music ), it’s notable for including tracks that straddle genres: pop, novelty and dance. The accusation that they are some K-Pop wannabes is dispelled by this album that captures the musical blend beloved by the Filipinos: a combination of lightness, humor and catchy hooks. In 1:43’s music is a true-blue Filipino heart.

“Ang Saya-Saya” is the song that best represents this identifiable Filipino streak. Days after the song has hit airwaves, music channels and YouTube, it has caught fire, making people replicate the signature dance moves that the 1:43 boys demonstrate with a smile (and a dose of sizzling sexiness). Proof that it is now part of pop culture is its becoming the official theme song of the GMA sitcom Ismol Family and the dance craze of Sunday All Stars.

“After the success of our single ‘Hayop sa Ganda,’ we were quite nervous how the audience would respond to ‘Ang Saya-Saya,’” says Anjo. “Good thing that the song has really caught up. In our shows, the people just naturally do the moves whenever we sing the song.”

Accolades for the group have been coming. This year alone, the group was nominated for Best/Group Duo in the 6th PMPC Awards for Music alongside SpongeCola, Rocksteddy and Parokya ni Edgar. They also won the Most Promising Recording and Performing Group in the 45th Box Office Entertainment Awards of the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, a barometer of the most bankable local talents.

It doesn’t hurt that 1:43’s musical growth coincides with their maturity as men. When before they looked like your typical boys next door as they were starting in the industry, now the 1:43 members are full-fledged men, with well-defined muscles (Anjo’s rippling abs are legendary) that make girls swoon. In fact, even some of them faint during 1:43’s perfomance.

The boys’ oozing confidence and sexual appeal translates into a heart-stopping showmanship and stage presence each time they perform in corporate events, campus and mall shows and festivals. No less than Rated K, hosted by the indefatigable Korina Sanchez, certified the group as one of the hottest local celebrities today. With their string of successes, 1:43 is emboldened to do more projects that push the envelope. They started this with a story-telling twist in the music video of “Hayop Sa Ganda.” The woman that is being “wooed” in this video is not your typical damsel but the transwoman Miss International Queen Kevin Balot. So far, the music video has garnered over half a million views in YouTube.

Also embodying this twist is their soon-to-be-released music video, “Pwede Bang Malaman,” which features beauty queen and actress Chloe Dauden. This time, the boys will showcase their mature sensual side. Whatever they will “reveal” in the video will definitely send heartbeats and pulse rates racing. “Our fans will definitely love this video,” says Gold. “We have been working hard in the gym, so they better watch out.”

While the four boys have found success as a group, individually, they still pursue their own passions. Anjo, Myx VJ Search finalist, is now doing hosting gigs; Gold is an entrepreneur and about to launch his own perfume company; while Yuki and Argee are honing their acting chops to prepare them for eventual appearances in soaps. “It’s important to us to have our own projects,” says Argee, the latest addition to the group. “It makes us bring something new to the table each time we perform together.”

ABSCBN Wins Gold at Spark Awards 2014

ABS-CBN Corporation was crowned the inaugural Best in Show at Marketing’s Spark Awards for Media Excellence after bagging three Gold, two Silver, and four Bronze awards in categories, including Best Event by a Media Owner and Best Campaign by a Media Owner.

ABS-CBN’s “Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na” campaign received two Gold awards in the Best Event by a Media Owner and Best Media Solution – Integrated Media categories, while the “Tayo Na” Solidarity Concert bagged a Gold award in Best Event by a Media Owner category.

Passenger safety app PasaHero and health news program “Pamilya OnGuard,” meanwhile, were named Silver awardees as Best App by a Media Owner and Best Use of Branded Content by a Media Owner, respectively.

GMA7 Wins Gold at Spark Awards 2014

GMA Marketing and Productions, Inc. (GMPI), the sales and marketing arm of GMA Network Inc., received multiple Gold Awards at the Spark Awards for Media Excellence 2014 held at the Westin Hotel in Singapore last August 28.

Organized by Marketing magazine, the Spark Awards celebrates the best practices in media solutions, products and services. It is the premier platform for media owners in the Southeast Asian region to showcase their innovation, effectiveness, and value proposition to advertisers, agencies and clients.

GMPI bagged a total of seven awards that night—including three Golds and a Silver.

Winning two Golds and a Silver award for Best App, Best Use of Branded Content and Best Media Solution–Integrated Media, respectively, was Del Monte Kitchenomics for their groundbreaking program integration with a mobile app. The same also won Best in Brand Marketing for Integrated Campaign in the recently concluded Philippine Association of National Advertisers Truth in Advertising Awards.

GMPI won another Gold for Best Media Solution—TV/Online for their annual value-driven GMA Christmas Short Films campaign. Last 2013, GMPI with its partner advertisers went beyond telling socially relevant stories by donating to the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. It helped mobilize relief efforts from various institutions and individuals.

The GMPI produced music video of Asim Kilig for Knorr Sinigang, which stepped out of the usual cooking demo with a 2-minute material showcasing catchy dance moves, also received a Bronze in Best Media Solution – TV/Online.

GMA’s longest running network promotion, Kapuso Milyonaryo, which has improved countless lives and produced over 50 millionaires, was bestowed a Bronze for Most Improved Offering.

GMA7's 'Titser' and 'Reel Time' --- Only Philippine finalists at the 2014 Japan Prize

GMA News TV makes it to the finals of the prestigious Japan Prize with two of its programs – the original series Titser and the documentary program Reel Time. Titser and Reel Time are the only finalists from the Philippines.

The Japan Prize was established in 1965 by the NHK as an International Educational Program Contest with the aim of improving the quality of educational programs around the world. This year, Japan Prize received 320 entries from 62 different countries.

Titser is one of 7 finalists chosen under the Creative Frontier Category and is a candidate for a special award, the Maeda Prize (for excellent work dealing with issues in a producer’s country or region) while Reel Time’s “Nibulaysir” documentary is also a candidate for the Maeda Prize.

Titser is a dramatic series about a high school valedictorian from a poor barrio school (played by GMA actress Lovi Poe) who dreams of becoming a teacher but whose only option after graduation is to work as a housemaid. The series also discusses Philippine educational issues: lack of books and chairs and classrooms, corruption in the procurement process of schools and how majority of the population has only reached a high school level - or less - of education.

Reel Time’s Nibulaysir episode documents the fascinating story of 25-year old Maribel, who decides to enroll in Grade 1 upon being called ignorant by her 7-year old daughter. She ends up as a classmate of her own daughter. Through Maribel's experiences, the program presents a vivid picture of how basic literacy can change a person’s life.

Sunday All Stars mainstay Christian Bautista continues to be one of the hottest, most in-demand international artists in Indonesia as he topbilled three consecutive successful major shows from August 23-26.

Asia’s Romantic Balladeer broke new grounds during the first concert (August 23) as he became the first international artist to perform in the city of Banjarmasin. The concert, held at the Dynasty Aria, was attended by Christian’s Indonesian fans.

Last August 25, Christian performed at the Prive Club, atop the Harris Suites at the FX Sundirman Building in Jakarta. Christian shared a special duet of the Indonesian version of Please Be Careful With My Heart with special fan Fitri.

The following day, August 26, younger Indonesians were thrilled during Christian’s concert in Queen Rose in Bandung, an area where some of the biggest universities are situated in. The highlight of the show was when Christian took off his neck tie and threw it to the audience, which made the crowd go wild.

These shows continue to fortify Christian’s superstar status in Indonesia.

Christian is about to release his latest album under Universal Records in a few weeks. The album promises to make music lovers fall in love over and over again with the Romantic Balladeer’s soothing voice.

GMA7's National TV Ratings for August 2014 via AGB Nielsen

GMA Network continues to gain ground over closest competitor ABS-CBN in nationwide ratings in August driven by its strong performance across all timeblocks. This, according to the industry’s leading ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

For the period August 1 to 31 (with the dates of August 24 to 31 based on overnight data), GMA further decreased ABS-CBN’s lead in NUTAM (National Urban Television Audience Measurement) to a mere 0.2 percent as it scored a 34 percent total day household audience share, and outperformed TV5’s 9.3 percent by 24.7 points.

GMA continued to lead in the morning block with a 30.7 percent audience share, higher than ABS-CBN’s 30.3 percent and TV’s 12.2 percent. The same trend was seen in the afternoon block, wherein GMA scored 36 percent, surpassing ABS-CBN’s 30.4 percent and TV5’s 9.9 percent by 5.6 and 26.1 points, respectively. GMA also further hiked up its shares in the evening block to 34.1 percent from July’s 32.3 percent.

On a similar note, GMA effectively kept its total-day advantage in its strong areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, while ruling across all dayparts. Urban Luzon and Mega Manila respectively account for 77 and 60 percent of the urban TV household population in the entire country.

GMA prevailed over competition by substantial margins in Urban Luzon with a 37.6 percent total day audience share, leading ABS-CBN’s 30.4 percent by 7.2 points and TV5’s 8.6 percent by 29 points.

The Network also maintained its stronghold in its bailiwick Mega Manila with a 38.7 percent total day average, up by a commanding 10.7 points from ABS-CBN’s 28 percent, and up 29.5 points from TV5’s 9.2 percent.

Multi-awarded news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS) once again captured the top spot in both the Urban Luzon and Mega Manila lists of top shows, and simultaneously led all Kapuso programs in the list for NUTAM.

Moreover, majority of programs (including specials) in the Urban Luzon and Mega Manila lists were from GMA, reaching 18 and 21, respectively. Other high rating shows from GMA include Niño, Magpakailanman, My Destiny, Marian, 24 Oras, Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real, Celebrity Bluff, Ismol Family, Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kuwento, and Eat Bulaga.

GMA subscribes to the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement service, while ABS-CBN is the lone local major TV network that subscribes to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

Nielsen data is gathered through a greater number of sampled homes nationwide in comparison to Kantar Media.

ABS-CBN, the country’s largest and leading multimedia conglomerate, remained strong in August 2014 as it once again topped the ratings game.

More Filipinos from both urban and rural homes tuned in to its programs with an average total day audience share of 43%, or eight points higher than GMA’s 35%, according to data from Kantar Media.

Kantar Media uses a nationwide panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes that represent 100% of the total Philippine TV viewing population, while the other ratings data supplier AGB Nielsen reportedly has only 1,980 homes based solely in urban areas that represent only 57% of the Philippine TV viewing population.

ABS-CBN also remained uncontested in its primetime block (6PM-12MN) with an average audience share of 49%, or 15 points ahead of GMA’s 34%. ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida also continues its winning streak in other key territories. In Balance Luzon (areas in Luzon outside Mega Manila), it recorded an average audience share of 52%, while it attained 63% in the Visayas and 62% in Mindanao. GMA, on the other hand, garnered only 34%, 25%, and 24% respectively for the said time block.

The primetime block is the most important part of the day when most Filipinos watch TV and advertisers put a larger chunk of their investment in to reach more consumers effectively.

Kantar Media’s data also showed that eleven out of the top 15 regular airing programs in August were produced by ABS-CBN.

Asia’s longest drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya” emerged as the most watched program in country for the previous month with an average national TV rating of 28.7%. Its August 16 episode, featuring the life story of “The Voice Kids” champion Lyca Gairanod, gained a monster rating of 38.4%, or thrice that of GMA’s “Magpakailanman” with only 12.8% on the said day.

ABS-CBN’s primetime ‘master teleserye’ “Ikaw Lamang” grabbed the second place and noted an average national TV rating of 28.4%. Its second chapter premiered strongly last August 11 with a rating of 28.1%, compared to its rival “My Destiny,” which got 15.2%.

Piolo Pascual-starrer “Hawak Kamay” placed third for the said month with an average national TV rating of 28.1%. It reached its all-time high national TV rating of 30.4% last August 28.

Other programs that joined the top 15 list were “Wansapanataym,” (26.8%) “TV Patrol,” (26%) “Rated K,” (24.8%) “Home Sweetie Home,” (20.7%) “Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon,” (20.2%) “Pure Love,” (19.2%) and “Goin’ Bulilit” (18.7%). ABS-CBN’s Saturday night fun show “Mga Kwento Ni Marc Logan” (17.6%), which just started airing last August 9, also secured a spot on the list.

The Big Night of the Twitter-trending reality show “Pinoy Big Brother All In,” which hailed Daniel Matsunaga as the big winner last August 24, scored a high rating of 27.9% that outperformed the pilot airing of GMA’s “Sa Puso Ni Dok” (9.8%).

I've always thought highly of actors, stars and celebrities being intelligent enough to make the right choices for the roles they want to play on films. I have been disappointed several times in the past but I am always hopeful that maybe next time actors will make the right one.

I am currently doing the sequel to Tiktik The Aswang Chronicles that starred Dingdong Dantes, Joey Marquez, Janice de Belen, Ramon Bautista and Lovi Poe. Yes, Lovi Poe. She played the girlfriend of Dingdong as the requisite pregnant damsel in distress in a siege film. It may not be as important a film as a Cinemalaya entry but I think it's a fun worthy project to do.

The sequel Kubot The Aswang Chronicles takes off where the first one ended with Dingdong and Lovi along with their newly born baby Macky rushing to leave the town of Pulupandan.

We have a new leading lady for the 2nd film. This time it will be played by Isabelle Daza. So you might ask what happened to Lovi? Well, Lovi will supposedly be in the film for 2 shooting days. That will be how long the opening part will be shot. I leave you guys to figure out what happens there but after that opening sequence, the story continues after two years of that incident.

So technically, the lead actress In the first film Lovi Poe will only be shot for 2 days here in the 2nd film.

Now that's where we encountered problems.

In franchise movies like these, we in Reality Entertainment, AgostoDos and GMA films, as producers think beyond than just one film and we stipulate in our contracts for the actors that they should be ready to do 3 films. That holds true for Dingdong (even if he is a co-producer), Joey Marquez, Janice De Belen (even if she died on the first one. Who knows, she might re-appear as the ghost conscience of Joey Marquez) , Ramon Bautista (that even if his Bart character died, he's now back in the 2nd film in a surprise role) and of course, Lovi.

For months now, we, the producers and the production have been struggling to negotiate with Lovi and her managers to shoot the opening sequence. Over a month ago, we got word that she does not want to do it because it was just for two days. We dangled every possible option just to get her to agree with us EVEN WHEN WE HAVE A SOLID CONTRACT TO HOLD HER UP TO THIS 2nd film, but she and her manager Leo Dominguez still said no. (Even if, by the way, our new lead actress, Isabelle Daza is also coming from the same manager).

The final straw that made us decide it would be impossible to get Lovi Poe to do the role was when they said yes but demanded a ridiculous amount of money for it. There I realized, "Tangina, wala talagang plano 'tong Lovi na 'to na gawin 'tong sequel. Huhuthutan lang kami nito na parang nangongotong na pulis!"

This post is long overdue. As part producer of the film, I don't want any negative publicity to put the film in a bad light. I only decided today to post this because it has been 3 weeks now and we have been looking for a replacement for Lovi and we couldn't find anyone. I just realized, Lovi screwed us up! And even with a contract binding us to her, showbusiness doesn't really operate that way. As much as possible, whatever the conflict, avoid any corporate and legal confrontation.

I am pissed that a starlet like Lovi Poe would have the gall to go against the contract she signed just because she does not want to do a two-day role.

We will, of course, still find a replacement for her after all the burden she put on us and the production.

Just want to vent out my frustration at how these managers and starlets think so highly of themselves. Gumawa lang ng Muslim Musliman na indie kala mo serious actor na.

This will be the last time I will get a talent from Leo Dominguez. And Lovi Poe, kahit maliit lang kaming production company, you will never get any offer from us again. Good luck on your world-changing teleseryes. Fuck you very much for fucking us up!

Smart offers free access to Wikipedia until February next year

Wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) announced a new partnership today with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia and its sister projects.

Part of the global Wikipedia Zero program, the collaboration will give Smart, Talk ‘N Text, and Sun Cellular’s 68.9 million customers unlimited access to Wikipedia, free of data charges from their mobile device.

“We have always looked for and promoted ways to use technology and mobile communications to drive learning and consequently, development. Wikipedia Zero is relevant in a country where access to both computer terminals and Internet connectivity is still relatively low, but where almost everyone owns a cellphone. We are excited to bring Wikipedia Zero to the country and help create a way to make learning more accessible to millions of Filipinos,” said Ramon R. Isberto, head of Public Affairs at Smart.

Wikipedia is the world’s largest online encyclopedia, visited by 500 million people each month, according to Comscore. Wikipedia contains more than 30 million articles in 287 languages, contributed by a global community of 80,000 volunteers.

Under Wikipedia Zero, starting September 5, 2014 until February 3, 2015, all Smart, Talk ‘N Text, and Sun Cellular subscribers who will access m.wikipedia.org, zero.wikipedia.org, the Wikipedia apps (available for iOS and Android devices), or any other Wikimedia sites on their cellphone, can do so without incurring data charges.
