On a personal note; thinking myself a “chemist” I ventured into “winemaking.” Over several years I made a lot of wine for personal use. Some of the wine was good and some was bad but none of it was wasted…LOL.. One summer I made a few gallons of wine using red raspberries and it was excellent. Over the years I developed a severe allergy to wine/alcohol so I no longer can enjoy a good glass of wine, but I can enjoy the beauty of a vineyard and appreciate the love/work involved in making a good wine.

A Photo Tour of The Ohio River Museum in Marietta,Ohio

A short drive from Lancaster,Ohio to Marietta,Ohio where you can step back in time to the days of the sternwheeler and steam

In Marietta,Ohio you will find the Ohio River Museum where you can tour the museum and the W.P. Snyder,Jr. Towboat. (plan on spending a couple hours anyway)

The Ohio River Museum is located at 601 Front Street, Marietta, Ohio, one block from Ohio State Route 7, and minutes from I-77. I think I’ll have Linda pay the entrance fee.

The museum is located on the banks of the Muskingum River a tributary of the Ohio River.

There are two basic ways to mount paddle wheels on a ship; either a single wheel on the rear, known as a stern-wheeler, or a paddle wheel on each side, known as a side-wheeler.

An old river boat pilot was sitting on a bench near the wharf in Marietta,Ohio when a young man walked up and sat down. The young man had spiked hair and each spike was a different color.... green, red, orange, blue, and yellow.After a while the young man noticed that the captain was staring at him."What's the matter old timer, never done anything wild in your life? The old captain replied, "Got drunk once and married a parrot. I was just wondering if you were my son!" (this joke won’t be found at the museum)

Garden Update..The Garden Is Planted…5/16/2012

A “QUALITY TIME FARM” POST FROM LANCASTER,OHIO

This is the strawberry patch before weeding.

Strawberry patch after weeding and planting extra Butternut Squash.(Used a lot of Preen for weed control). We will see how it works this time.

And after.. All tomatoes were planted in the garden on 5/16/2012.. and that finished all planting.

Four rows of tomatoes with about ten plants per row.

This year I’m hoping to (easily) rototill between the rows.

Pepper plants have been planted in the garden for about a week now. Linda and I planted about twenty plants. (Burpee: Honey crisp and California Wonder

All the plants were started from seed starting on Feb.1 2012

The Back Yard Garden In Lancaster,Ohio 2012

This is what I call “QUALITY TIME FARMS” LOL

Actually, I started planting the garden yesterday 5/7/2012.. but before starting I thought I’d take a few photos and work on a blog post. (Anything to get out of doing some actual work LOL)

First a preview of all the veggie plants.. Most were started inside about the 1st of Feb.

I will be planting 5 different varieties of tomatoes,2 varieties of green peppers,2 varieties of cucumbers,zucchini and, butternut squash. Onions,green beans and, beets are planted early directly in the garden.

All the seeds this year are from Burpee.

The green pepper seeds were the slowest to germinate and the slowest growing of all the plants. Next year I will start them even earlier.

Now let’s take a look at the garden. Linda and I just have a small in town lot but just about all of it is used for “growing”

The soil has been prepared (rototilled,fertilized,and I use Garden Preen to help with weed control.) I need to reinstall the fence on the left.

The fence will keep small critters out, rabbit,groundhog,raccoon but not deer.Also, I have a live catch which I sometimes use. See previous posts.

I used this small outdoor greenhouse to help start the plants. From Amazon

This area outside the fence is the strawberry patch.This spring I replanted this area after totally weeding and re-tilling. As you can see weeds are once again trying to take over. The Preen did not work at all in this area and I don’t know why. I did get half of this area weeded yesterday and planted the extra butternut squash in this area. Last year “critters” didn’t bother the squash planted outside the fence.

Along the one side of the strawberry patch I have the red raspberries and are they good.

One of two peach trees and it looks like a good batch of peaches this year.

One of two pear trees and there will be some pears.

One of two apple trees.They really haven’t done much. May get rid of them.

I use the deck as a growing/staging area for the garden. Most of the garden supplies are kept in the shed.

Strawberry plants in planters. And last but not least.. A few onions.

Thanks for visiting the “Farm.” It does take a good bit of time to grow then process all the fruits & vegetables but Linda and I really enjoy doing it and the food is great.

Rockbridge State Nature Preserve..A Hidden Gem Near Lancaster,Ohio

The natural arch or bridge known as Rockbridge is considered the largest natural bridge in the state.

Actually, Rockbridge State Nature Preserve is just a short drive from Columbus,Ohio and almost no drive from Lancaster,Ohio..Having spent most of my life in Lancaster I am almost ashamed to say this was my first visit to this nature preserve. Just about ready to pull into the parking lot.

The preserve features two loop trails, one of which passes the natural bridge, which is the largest in Ohio, and the other of which goes to a rock shelter. Today we will check out the Natural Bridge.

The preserve comprises 202 acres.The formations are set back from the banks of the Hocking River only a short distance.
Love that blue sky and white puffy clouds.(Is that a duck in the sky?)

There are 89 preserves in Ohio open to the public.

Some of the Ohio State Nature Preserves require an access permit.CLICK but not Rockbridge.

Rockbridge Natural Bridge originated millions of years ago, when Ohio lay under a warm inland sea.

Rockbridge is nearly 100 feet long and ranges from 6 to 20 feet wide—it also features a 50 foot seasonal waterfall cascading over a cliff behind the arch.
On the Hocking Valley Birding Trail Rockbridge is stop #20. Birds to look out for include Bluebirds, Cardinals, Wood Ducks, Wild Turkey, Red-tailed Hawks, Turkey Vultures, Yellowthroats, Indigo Buntings and, Pileated Woodpeckers. (A highlight of my hike.)

All I can say is WOW…. Time to head back.

Part of the trail can be strenuous but pace yourself and you will be fine. If you get too tired, there are benches strategically placed along the way for you to rest.(and I used them) Near the parking lot there is even a Trading Post (not open when I was there).Are you a Natural Born Hiker?

The history of creating glass can be traced back to 3500 BCE in Mesopotamia. The term glass developed in the late Roman Empire. It was in the Roman glassmaking center at Trier, now in modern Germany, that the late-Latin term glesum originated, probably from a Germanic word for a transparent, lustrous substance.

The National Heisey Glass Museum..The museum, housed in the 1831 King House along with a beautiful new expansion, features Heisey glass which was produced in Newark,Ohio from 1895 to 1957. A few photos from the King House….(The historic Samuel D. King residence, an 1831 Greek Revival style home.)

Ohio Barn::Love::Patience

One day a father and his rich family took his young son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose to show him how poor people can be. They spent a day and a night in the farm of a very poor family.

When they got back from their trip the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

Very good, Dad!" "Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked."Yeah!"

"And what did you learn?"

The son answered, "I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden, they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lamps in the garden, they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front yard, they have a whole horizon."

When the little boy was finishing, his father was speechless.

His son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are!"

Isn't it true that it all depends on the way you look at things? If you have love, friends, family, health, good humor and a positive attitude toward life, you've got everything!

The first few photos were taken on the back deck of my house in Lancaster,Ohio on the morning of 3/01/2011. This year we have had quite a warm spell..like in the 80’s last week.

An “Author Unknown” story for SPIRITUAL SUNDAY A MY QUALITY TIME POST FROM LANCASTER,OHIO

I ran into a stranger as he passed by,
‘Oh excuse me please’ was my reply.

He said, ‘Please excuse me too;
I wasn’t watching for you.’

We were very polite, this stranger and I.
We went on our way and we said goodbye.

But at home a different story is told,
How we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day, cooking the evening meal,
My son stood beside me very still.

When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.
‘Move out of the way,’ I said with a frown.

He walked away, his little heart broken.
I didn’t realize how harshly I’d spoken.

While I lay awake in bed,
God’s still small voice came to me and said,

‘While dealing with a stranger,
common courtesy you use,
but the family you love, you seem to abuse.

Go and look on the kitchen floor,
You’ll find some flowers there by the door.

Those are the flowers he brought for you.
He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.

He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise,
you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes.’

By this time, I felt very small,
And now my tears began to fall.

I quietly went and knelt by his bed;
‘Wake up, little one, wake up,’ I said.

‘Are these the flowers you picked for me?’
He smiled, ‘I found ‘em, out by the tree.

I picked ‘em because they’re pretty like you.
I knew you’d like ‘em, especially the blue.’

I said, ‘Son, I’m very sorry for the way I acted today;
I shouldn’t have yelled at you that way.’
He said, ‘Oh, Mom, that’s okay.
I love you anyway.’

I said, ‘Son, I love you too,
and I do like the flowers, especially the blue.’

Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company
that we are working for could easily replace us in
a matter of days.
But the family we left behind will feel the loss
for the rest of their lives.

And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more
into work than into our own family,
an unwise investment indeed,
don’t you think?

One of my favorite places near Lancaster is Clear Creek Metro Park::”Clear Creek Valley is one of the most pristine and secluded natural areas in Central Ohio. Variations of land surfaces, soils and climates have produced a medley of habitats that harbor more than 800 plant species and 150 species of birds, many of them rare.”

A short drive from Lancaster,Ohio to Columbus,Ohio and the Ohio Fire Museum. A MY QUALITY TIME POST and A GREAT PLACE TO SPEND SOME QUALITY TIME.

JUST TRYING TO FIND SOME WORDS THAT RHYME WITH MUSEUM…LOL..

ANYWAY: THE CENTRAL OHIO FIRE MUSEUM & LEARNING CENTER

The Central Ohio Fire Museum and it's so much more than just a museum. There are artifacts and objects from days long past that showcase the early days of the station and city's history but the Learning Center is what really makes this place special….. I wonder if they are open……….

Located in the heart of Downtown Columbus 260 N. Fourth Street Columbus, Ohio 43215…………..

You will be able to walk through actual burned rooms.View a full size childs’s bedroom,shown during and after a fire. (smells like smoke). No photos of learning center in this post. You will just have to go to the museum yourself.

Copper Country,Copper Mining & The Quincy Mine

A MY QUALITY TIME POST FROM LANCASTER,OHIO LINKING TO OUR WORLD AND SCENIC SUNDAY. Keweenaw Heritage Site IS A GREAT PLACE TO SPEND AN AFTERNOON.THEN HEAD ON UP TO COPPER HARBOR

Today we are going to visit Quincy Mine a popular Keweenaw tourist attraction. The Quincy Mine Hoist Association maintains the buildings and grounds, and provides guided tours of the Number 2 Hoist House and the 7th level of the mine during the summer. Tourists are transported to the 7th level by the Quincy and Torch Lake Cog Railway. There are museum-style exhibits within many buildings. The mine and surrounding areas are part of Keweenaw National Historical Park. All Aboard:

I have one photo from inside the mine and it’s not very good.. flash didn’t work and no tripod to use…just unsteady hands.. but I think you will get the idea.

What was the purpose of the above machinery?HINT: When the mine ceased production in 1945, the Quincy Number 2 shaft was the world's deepest shaft, at 9,260 feet (2.82 km or 1.75 miles) along the dip of the deposit. To raise and lower ore and workers into this shaft, the world's largest steam-driven mine hoist was built in 1918 and housed in the Quincy Number 2 Hoist House.

In 1931, low copper prices lead to the closure—
but not the dissolution—of the Quincy
Mining Company. Reopening in 1940 for war
efforts, the smelting works was closed permanently
in 1972.
