Lancaster Festival entertainment to be little bit country, little bit rock 'n' roll

Kenny Rogers headlines the festival and will perform at 8:15 p.m. July 31 on the Wendel Concert Stageat Ohio University-Lancaster, 1570 Granville Pike.

For those wanting a mixture of classic rock and classical music, the Classical Mystery Tour will perform Beatles hits with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. That show will be at 8:15 July 24 at OU-L. READ MORE..

About the time the above photo was taken my Grandmother took me to Florida for a week at the beach and I got to make my first sandcastle.

“Keepers” In Memory of Paul Sewall for That’s My World

We had some storms yesterday evening in Lancaster,Ohio,lightning,thunder,and clouds. The back ground for the story Keepers is a photo of the clouds over my backyard. I wish I could claim the lightning but I can’t

I did grow up in the 50’s but I don’t think my mom washed the aluminum foil. Both of my Grandmothers did. My one Grandma would unwrap her Christmas presents very carefully so all the wrapping paper could be reused. (took forever to a young boy).

Another Keeper was “Prison Paul”. LANCASTER: Paul James Sewall, 68, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at The Pickering House after a courageous battle with cancer. Paul volunteered at Fairfield Medical Center and Southeastern Correctional Institute Hence the nickname Prison Paul. Following Paul's wishes, his body has been donated to The Ohio State University to further medical studies.Paul was grateful for the life he had been given and grateful for learning that acceptance is the pathway to peace. When I was at Paul’s memorial service I talked with a young man Adam. He had been incarcerated at the S.E. Correctional Institute and had been out of prison for about a year. Adam is now enrolled at Ohio State University and has a 4.0 grade point average. Adam stated, “ If it weren't for Paul and the “meetings” he brought into the prison I would either be back in prison or dead. Paul’s memorial service ended with the Serenity Prayer: by the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr.

God, grant me the serenity

To accept the things I cannot change;

Courage to change the things I can;

And wisdom to know the difference.

“I first met him one Fourth of July afternoon in the middle eighties. The sawdust streets and high board sidewalks of the lumber town were filled to the brim with people. The permanent population, dressed in the stiffness of its Sunday best, escorted gingham wives or sweethearts; a dozen outsiders like myself tried not to be too conspicuous in a city smartness; but the great multitude was composed of the men of the woods. I sat, chair-tilted by the hotel, watching them pass. Their heavy woollen shirts crossed by the broad suspenders, the red of their sashes or leather shine of their belts, their short kersey trousers "stagged" off to leave a gap between the knee and the heavily spiked "cork boots"--all these were distinctive enough of their class, but most interesting to me were the eyes that peered from beneath their little round hats tilted rakishly askew. They were all subtly alike, those eyes. Some were black, some were brown, or gray, or blue, but all were steady and unabashed, all looked straight at you with a strange humorous blending of aggression and respect for your own business, and all without exception wrinkled at the corners with a suggestion of dry humor. In my half-conscious scrutiny I probably stared harder than I knew, for all at once a laughing pair of the blue eyes suddenly met mine full, and an ironical voice drawled,"Say, bub, you look as interested as a man killing snakes. Am I your long-lost friend?"

Well, you may wonder what the above story has to do with My World Tuesday. To tell you the truth I did a little wondering/wandering myself, but this is what I came up with. The photo above is of the Shawnee Indian the Prophet whose brother was the great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh. Another great Tecumseh was General William Tecumseh Sherman whose home town is Lancaster,Ohio.

“The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio is the birthplace of General William Tecumseh Sherman, his younger brother U.S. Senator John Sherman and home of the remarkable Sherman family. The Sherman House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.General Sherman was born February 8, 1920 and named William Tecumseh after the great Indian chief of the Shawnee but acquired the nickname Cump from his siblings. Tybee Island is an island and city in Chatham County, Georgia near the city of Savannah in the southeastern United States.

After leaving the beach at Tybee Island Linda and I strolled the quaint streets of Savannah

On the way back to Hilton Head Island we stop for a bite to eat and a view of the marshlands.

We usually stay at Palmetto Dunes (great condos) if we are at Hilton Head. A quick stop at the Outfitters

Then we stroll back to our condo for the evening

Yes there is golf; Trent Jones,Fazio,Arthur Hill (none of them are easy) Well it has been a long day but finally we are back at our Condo on St. Andrews Ct.

One of my favorite places at Palmetto Dunes is the General Store. A great place to stop for a quick breakfast or lunch ( talking fried chicken ).. The Palmetto Dunes General Store even has a page on Facebook I follow.

LANCASTER,OHIO SUMMER 2010 for That’s My World Tuesday

There is a lot going on in Lancaster this summer. A couple really great events kept me busy and I always like to take photos.

I did have a chance to go to both events but for the purpose of this post I’ll share some photos from the car show. The Gus Macker Basketball tournament took place in downtown Lancaster and the car show was at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds. In the previous post the photo of the “summer fountain” shows people attending the basketball tournament taking a break.

The mission of the Earth Angel Foundation of Ohio is to send terminally and/or life threatening ill children on dream vacations. Visit their site and be a Dream Maker.

The History: The Earth Angel founder, Denny Erwin, along with two central Ohio car clubs, The Corvettes of Lancaster and the Mid-Ohio Cruisers, joined forces to send terminally ill children on dream vacations to any destination within the continental United States. In the heart of Lancaster,Ohio we have Zane Square featuring a fountain purchased in New York City with funds raised in the 1890s by a group of local women.

There is a lot to see on and near Zane Square. One can Pick up a cassette tape or a map at the Visitors Bureau or Shaw's Restaurant & Inn, both right on the Square.

NOT ALL THAT FAR FROM LANCASTER,OHIO WE HAVE THE GHOST TOWN OF SAN TOY

For a couple years now I have been meaning to explore the Ghost Town Of San Toy, Ohio only about one hour away from Lancaster. “San Toy is a ghost town in northeastern Monroe Township, Perry County, Ohio, United States.” Wikipedia LINK

I really enjoy traveling the back roads of S.E.Ohio

“San Toy was practically a relic from the Wild West that grew out of the Appalachian foothills. It was a rough town where people frequently died in the saloons and streets.”

Was the town named after the boxer San Toy and was there a murder a day? Some say yes. I do know I should not have worn shorts to go tromping through the woods. LOL. The mine is filled in,the jail/prison only show their foundations but there is a modern church.

Do you think they still pray for the sinners of Old San Toy? Time to go into the woods and see what is left of the Ghost Town.

The only building still standing in San Toy is the old jailhouse.

“In 1931 the 19 registered voters elected to abandon the town. At one time There was a hospital,( only hospital in Perry County ) which was operated by the coal company; a movie theater, three schools; a drugstore; about six general stores; a pool room; seven saloons.” LINK. In doing a little exploring I found the opening to the mines and the poison ivy

“The mine was sold from the New England Coal Company to the Sunday Creek Coal Company in 1915, the new owners of the mine and the town vowed to make it a "modern mining system and a model community." LINK

Reflecting on Paradise in Punta Cana Dominican Republic

Well Linda and I are back in Lancaster,Ohio from Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. We enjoy sharing our photos and hope you enjoy them.

A Weekend Reflections & Scenic Sunday post. From the Paradise of Punta Cana.

I found the morning to be a good time to do a little reflecting at the pool.

On the way back to the room I would pass Bird of Paradise, Crane Flower (Strelitzia reginae) which symbolizes joyfulness. It also symbolizes magnificence. It can also be used to indicate exciting and wonderful anticipation.

Back in Ohio and spending a good deal of time in the garden but sometimes my mind is still in paradise. As Always,”Thanks for Stopping By.”

BLUE SKIES OVER PUNTA CANA IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC FOR SKYWATCH FRIDAY

John William Strutt, third Baron Rayleigh won The Nobel Prize in Physics 1904. If you are at all interested in the scientific reason for why the sky is blue click . The short answer is; the process called Rayleigh scattering.

I wonder what Baron Rayleigh would think about “SMILEY GUYS” in the sky?

I thought Blue Sky was caused by “I’m feeling Lucky” using Picasa 3.

Landscapes, skyscapes and sun don’t forget the Polarizing Filter. So What Does It Do? First of all it can darken blue skies turning them a deep, rich blue.

LINDA AND I SPENT A LOT OF TIME AT THE BEACH IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ( PUNTA CANA ) A WATERY WEDNESDAY POST.

Sometimes the beach was quiet and I had the opportunity for those early morning walks.

The sand, sea,and sky in Punta Cana is outstanding. Now maybe do a little sailing in a catamaran

I hadn’t sailed a boat in 25 years. These sail boats are very stable and easy to sail. Jibing and Coming About was the question of the moment. I went out first just by myself to see how things went then the next day Linda went with me.

By noon “things” were in full swing.

Then in the evening the mood seemed to be more contemplative. (at least for me). “We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came.” John F. Kennedy

THE SIMPLE THINGS FOR ME ARE WANDERING, GARDENING, AND GOLFING. Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time in the garden.(I know I need to do more commenting)

Last year the groundhog pretty much devastated the garden. (note the fence) so far so good. There are two peach trees at the far end of the garden and the limbs are loaded with peaches.

The strawberries are done for the season but we did manage to freeze some. Right now Red Raspberries are going strong. Pies,Cobbler,and on vanilla ice cream. OH MY Red Raspberries contain significant amounts of polyphenol antioxidants such as anthocyanin pigments linked to potential health protection against several human diseases.

No photo of the pie because it is in my stomach. Last year I did a post on the old garden shed . This spring Linda and I assembled the new shed. Without Linda reading and interpreting the directions the THOUSANDS of pieces would still be in the box.

Linda is in the “sewing room”. She just got and order for fifteen of her handcrafted Teddy Bears. Each Teddy Bear has a zippered compartment in the back and an embroidered name on the arm. When I have a problem I just write it down on a note pad and put the note in the Teddy Bears back. A problem shared with a “Bear” is a problem solved. Like a fine wine, happiness apparently improves with age, as Nicholas Bakalar reports in today’s Science Times.

People start out at age 18 feeling pretty good about themselves, and then, apparently, life begins to throw curve balls. They feel worse and worse until they hit 50. At that point, there is a sharp reversal, and people keep getting happier as they age. By the time they are 85, they are even more satisfied with themselves than they were at 18.
