Tessa received the Ohioana Award in 1942 for “Window by the Sea”, chosen as the best book of verse by an Ohio poet. Remember Saturday, May 11, 2013.. “The Ohioana Book Festival is a welcome reminder of the powerful friend we have in a generous author who gifts us with a well-written book.” ( I was able to purchase a signed copy of “Window by the Sea” .. eBay )

Just off the Historic National Road in Cambridge,Ohio you will find the Hopalong Cassidy Museum/Antique Mall..

An interesting building..Used to be a hospital..

Hopalong Cassidy..In 1935,William Boyd was offered the supporting role of Red Connors in the movie Hop-Along Cassidy, but asked to be considered for the title role and won it. The original Hopalong Cassidy character, written by Clarence E. Mulford for pulp fiction, was changed from a hard-drinking, rough-living wrangler to its eventual incarnation as a cowboy hero who did not smoke, drink or swear and who always let the bad guy start the fight. The Hopalong Cassidy Festival 2013 May 3rd & 4th Call: 740-432-3364..There will be a gigantic western collectible toy and gun sale plus a chance to talk with western authors & stars.

The museum is in three rooms located at the end of the hall. Remember this building used to be a hospital..All the rooms off the hall are loaded with antiques and memorabilia…

Boyd was born in Hendrysburg in Belmont County, located 26 miles east of Cambridge, Ohio. He was reared in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of day laborer Charles William Boyd and his wife, the former Lida Wilkens.

We finally made it to the end of the hall .a lot to see.

Laura Bates (curator/owner) was shocked when she couldn’t find a fan club dedicated to William Boyd. But instead of feeling sad she happily started one of her own for the Ohio born actor/producer and his alter ego, the two fisted Western hero Hopalong Cassidy.

“No one had ever done anything to honor Bill/Hoppy. I couldn’t believe it. especially since Hoppy is one of the most popular cowboy heroes in TV or movie history.”

A pretty good creed for a cowboy that always wore a black hat. LOL

As a kid I remember watching the half-hour TV series.

At the height of his popularity in the 50’s Hoppy’s image was on more than 2,500 different items. Boyd was the first person to have his image on a lunch box.

Now check out the photo below (from the net). You sure wouldn’t ride this bike to school today.. My how times have changed.(not always for the better)

“One of the oldest log homes in the park, the Oliver place remained in the family until the park was established. Architecturally, it reflects the techniques and skills of European immigrants and represents a style typically found on the eastern frontier in the mid-1850s. The cabin contains no pegs or nails because gravity locks them together. The open spaces between the logs (chinks) were filled with mud to seal out the rain and wind. The small windows and doors conserved heat and maintained the building's strength.” READ MOE

What’s Mainly Wrong With Society Today

The photos were taken in or near Smokey Mountain National Park…Cades Cove…and Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center, Townsend, Tennessee.. “Dirt Roads” by Paul Harvey

What's mainly wrong with society today is that too many Dirt Roads have been paved. There's not a problem today, crime, drugs, education, divorce, delinquency that wouldn't be remedied, if we just had more Dirt Roads, because Dirt Roads give character.

People that live at the end of Dirt Roads learn early on that life is a bumpy ride. That it can jar you right down to your teeth sometimes, but it's worth it, if at the end is home...a loving spouse, happy kids and a dog.

We wouldn't have near the trouble with our educational system if our kids got their exercise walking a Dirt Road with other kids, from whom they learn how to get along.

There was less crime in our streets before they were paved. Criminals didn't walk two dusty miles to rob or rape, if they knew they'd be welcomed by 5 barking dogs and a double barrel shotgun. And there were no drive by shootings.

Our values were better when our roads were worse! People did not worship their cars more than their kids, and motorists were more courteous, they didn't tailgate by riding the bumper or the guy in front would choke you with dust & bust your windshield with rocks.

Dirt Roads taught patience. Dirt Roads were environmentally friendly, you didn't hop in your car for a quart of milk you walked to the barn for your milk. For your mail, you walked to the mail box.

What if it rained and the Dirt Road got washed out? That was the best part, then you stayed home (or wished you had) and had some family time, roasted marshmallows and popped popcorn and pony rode on Daddy's shoulders and learned how to make prettier quilts than anybody.

At the end of Dirt Roads, you soon learned that bad words tasted like soap.

Most paved roads lead to trouble, Dirt Roads more likely lead to a fishing creek or a swimming hole. At the end of a Dirt Road, the only time we even locked our car was in August, because if we didn't some neighbor would fill it with too much zucchini.

At the end of a Dirt Road, there was always extra springtime income, from when city dudes would get stuck, you'd have to hitch up a team and pull them out. Usually you got a dollar...always you got a new friend...at the end of a Dirt Road!

On a cold blustery March day I had the opportunity to spend a couple hours touring the Jack Nicklaus Museum located in the heart of The Ohio State University sports complex in Jack's hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

The museum is a 24,000 square-foot educational and historical facility.

This statue was commissioned by Golf Magazine to honor Jack Nicklaus as golfer of the century, 1888—1988……

and the tour begins.With The Legends of Golf….

Nicklaus was born in the Columbus, Ohio , the son of pharmacist Charlie Nicklaus (who ran several sites named Nicklaus Drug Store) and his wife Helen.. Jack Nicklaus is a “family man” whether as a son,husband,or father.

There are video screens in many of the “rooms” of the museum. This is a screen shot from one of them.

The tour of the museum ends with an 18 minute presentation in the theater (narrated by Sean Connery). I found the presentation enjoyable as I did the other presentations in the different rooms.

It's so good to finally get a health warning that is useful!!! IT INVOLVES THE SHAMPOO WHEN IT RUNS DOWN YOUR BODY WHEN YOU SHOWER WITH IT. WARNING TO US ALL!!!
Shampoo Warning! I don't know WHY I didn't figure this out sooner! I use shampoo in the shower! When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body, and printed very clearly on the shampoo label is this warning, "FOR EXTRA BODY AND VOLUME."No wonder I have been gaining weight! Well! I got rid of that shampoo and I am going to start showering with Dawn Dishwashing Soap. It's label reads, "DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE."Problem solved! If I don't answer the phone, I'll be in the shower…

We stayed at The Winds oceanfront resort and played all four Big Cat Courses: Lions Paw, Panthers run, Tigers Eye and, Leopards Chase. Our package included: 4 Nights Lodging, Daily Hot Southern Breakfast Buffet, Daily Round of Golf On Each Of The Big Cat’s Four Courses..Joe Todd says, great room, service, and the breakfast buffet can’t be beat. We did an 18 hole replay three of the four days.(18 hole replay $35.00)

WELCOME TO THE BIG CATS OF OCEAN RIDGE PLANTATION…Lions Paw, Panthers Run, Tigers Eye and Leopard’s Chase…Photos in no particular order…

In early March the temps ran from mid 30’s at night and high 50’s to mid 60’s during the day. The wind could be a factor. The above photo was taken from the back steps of the Tiger’s Eye club house about 7:30 in the morning.This was the only morning there was a little frost on the course.

If I ever get the chance to visit again I won’t play the Lions Paw course…As far as I’m concerned the greens are near impossible as far as being fast.The starter said the stimpmeter reading was 13-15…

God grant me the serenity to accept the shots I miss..

We found the parking lot was full at the Golden Corral restaurant in Shallotte N.C. (mostly locals)… loved the southern seasoned collard greens with ham hocks served with hoecakes on the side,and the southern style cabbage.

I have found The only time my prayers are never answered is on the golf course..

For seafood check out The Dockside Seafood House – Calabash, NC (the senior fish plate was great and only $9.95 nor did they skimp on the shrimp.)

Sand and alligators.. “Big Al” hangs out on #17 Tiger’s Eye course…I found the sand wasn’t much of a problem to play out of.

If you think it's hard to meet new people,try picking up the wrong golf ball LOL . To make a foursome we were paired with Joe and his wife one day.(local/members) and Byron and his wife another day.(from the great state of Pennsylvania)…We couldn’t have asked for better golf partners

I’ve heard it said they call it golf because all the other four-letter words were taken. Ok go ahead and spell golf backwards…What did you get??? LOL

HISTORIC ROSCOE VILLAGE

A “hidden gem” in Roscoe Village is The Toy Cellar, located in the lower level of the Toll House.

The 40 year collection has over 600 vintage toys, many of which are demonstrated on weekends and I was there on a Saturday.

Meet Rick who graciously demonstrated several of the windup and gravity activated toys.

Admission is Free! & Open Saturday and Sunday 1:00 Pm to 3:00Pm…

Rick told me the “most vintage” toy on display was made in the 1860”s. He then showed me the wooden rolling hoop. I can remember my father telling me the rolling hoop was something he played with as a child. In the West, the most common materials for the rolling hoops have been wood and metal. Wooden hoops, driven with a stick about one foot long, are struck with the center or the 2/3 point of the stick in order to ensure good progress.

Most of the toys were made in the good old U.S.A. and many of them were made right here in Ohio, Akron, Barberton, Kenton, Ravenna, Canton and Dayton.

Most of the toys are made of sheet metal, cast iron, tin, wood, pressed steel, rubber and other materials.(not much or any plastic that I saw)

During the world wars many of the toys originally made of metal were made of wood instead.

The collection is on loan to the Roscoe Village Foundation by a private collector.

No batteries in this collection. though Rick did show me an erector set that had a wind-up motor.

Lake Hope Lodge State Route 278 McArthur, Ohio

February 10, 2006 A fire destroyed the 56-year-old Hope Dining Lodge at Lake Hope State Park in Vinton County early this morning.

In talking to Eric Lee,”the menu is interesting enough for someone to travel from Columbus or Cleveland to enjoy and accessible enough that local residents will come for a regular meal or that very special occasion.” I’m from Lancaster,Ohio and I didn’t think it was a bad drive at all. Eric makes the drive to work from Athens and he says he really enjoys the scenery along the way.
