New York: Seaway Trail

Navigate your way through history following the shoreline of the Saint Lawrence River and Lake Ontario to the incredible fury of Niagara Falls. Learn about the War of 1812, the French and Indian War, pass charming small towns, lighthouses, and spectacular views, nature and recreation opportunities.

One of the first National Scenic Byways, this drive is long for a day trip. Take your time and experience it by breaking it up with an overnight stay or two, or do a section of it. The scenic drive begins in Massena and heads to Niagara Falls, but can be done in either direction. To reach Massena from the Adirondacks, head north on NY-30 to NY-37. If you’re coming from Quebec or Ontario, take the TC-401 to exit 58 for ON-138 which will bring you to NY-37.

Once on NY-37, the first section of the drive parallels the mighty Saint Lawrence River. Carved by vast glaciers over 20,000 years ago, and filled by their melting ice, the river provides hydroelectric power for the region and is a major throughway for shipping.

In Massena, stop at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Locks (A6). The Visitors Center is open seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day and from its large deck, observe ships from countries around the world transporting grain, iron ore, steel and other goods as they are lowered or raised approximately 38 feet. The highway continues through a tunnel which incredibly, runs underneath the locks.

At Robert Moses State Park (H1), enjoy the large, sandy beach, boat rentals, and great fishing. Take part in environmental programs at the year-round Nature Center and join a guided hike learning about the diverse flora and fauna. Tent and RV campsite are available as well as accessible cabins. The crisp, fresh winter season is a delight for a snowshoe hike, or cross-country along gently rolling terrain. Inexpensive equipment rentals are available on-site. Most New York State Parks charge a vehicle entrance fee. If you are visiting often, or wanting to explore the many parks featured in this drive, consider purchasing an Empire Passport which offers unlimited entry for one year. Learn about the Saint Lawrence-FDR Power Project and the seaways’ importance to power and transportation through hands on exhibits and programs at the Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

New York: Lakes to Locks Passage

Traveling along the shores of Lake Champlain between the Adirondack and Green Mountains, discover lush forests, a sandstone gorge, and splendid vistas. Steeped in history, the region was key to the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 and many historical sites are highlighted in this drive.

The scenic drive starts in Waterford and following Lake Champlain and the Vermont border to Rouses Point, near the Quebec border. It is a great drive to use in conjunction with two of our other drives; Champlain Islands and Vermont 22A.

Before leaving Waterford, stop at the Waterford Harbor Visitor Center (I1) to see and learn about the Erie Canal. Completed in 1825, it was an integral link between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean and instrumental in establishing New York City as a premier eastern port. Watch the myriad of boats pass through Lock #2 (there is no #1), walk along the north side of the canal or hike or bike the 3-mile Old Champlain Canal Towpath. While in the area, consider a side trip on the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway (T1). Twenty-six miles one way travels along the Mohawk River to Schenectady. Explore Cohoes Falls, Peebles Island State Park (H1), and Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve (H2) on the way.

Heading north on US-4, the road parallels the Hudson River as it passes several farming towns. In Saratoga, visit the Saratoga National Park (A1), site of the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, considered the turning point of the Revolutionary War. The park is comprised of four separate areas; the Battlefield which is located in Stillwater, the General Phillip Schuyler House in Schuylerville and the Saratoga Monument and Victory Woods both located in Victory, all of which are about a 15 minute drive from the Battlefield. The visitor center at Battlefield features an orientation film, interpretive exhibits and artifacts. Pick up a map and brochure and take a self-guided walking, bike or auto tour that covers 10 major highlights over 10 miles. The Schuyler House was the country home of General Philip Schuyler before and after the battle, having been rebuilt in 1777 after being burned down by the British to keep Americans from using them for cover. The Saratoga Monument is a 155-foot obelisk commemorating the American victory. Listen to the ranger-led presentation and climb almost 200 steps to the top for unique vantage point from which to ponder the past and take in extraordinary views of the Adirondacks, Green Mountains and Taconic’s. On three sides, statues of Generals Schuyler, Gates and Morgan adorn the niches, while the fourth, once intended for Benedict Arnold is left empty. The newest addition to the park is the 22-acre Victory Woods, once an encampment site for the British Army. Walk the mile long Victory Woods trail which begins in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Interpretive panels highlight historic points along the trail. Part of the national Parks System, there is an admission fee to Saratoga National Historical Park which is covered by the America the Beautiful Annual Pass.

From here, cross over the Hudson River and head north to Fort Edwards. At the Rogers Island Visitor Center (I2), learn about the Native Americans who lived here in 1000 B.C. and the history of the French and Indian War, and view artifacts from the Little Wood Creek Archaeological Site. In September, observe the annual French and Indian War Encampment, with living history demonstrations, drills and reenactments. Open seasonally, admission is free. Stop at the nearby Old Fort House Museum (M1) which was built in 1772 with logs from Fort Edwards. The museum features furnishings and art from the 1700s through the 1940s. On the grounds are the 1840 Toll House, a school house, law office, barn and more. Don’t miss the Doctors Apothecary Garden, growing an array of plants with medicinal properties such as New York Ironweed, wild Senna and Rattlesnake master. There is a small entrance fee for anyone over 18.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

Explore this vibrant wine region that abounds with limitless year-round outdoor recreation and exquisite views. In autumn, leaf peepers flock to view the tree-covered rolling hills painted by nature’s dazzling palette.

The scenic drive begins in the town of Ithaca and travels to Seneca Falls and can be done in either direction. Home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, explore the many museums, art galleries, theaters and downtown pedestrian mall where you will find an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops. And then of course — there are the gorges and waterfalls. Or get closer to the towering cliffs and thunderous roar by walking the short trail to the base of the falls. Swimming is prohibited due to strong currents. Visit the Ithaca Visitor Center (I1) for regional information and maps and experience the Cayuga Waterfront Trail, which offers stunning views while you walk, run, bike or rollerblade.

Head north on NY-89 to Taughannock Falls State Park (H1). Plunging a dramatic 215-feet into a rocky gorge, is the park’s namesake, Taughannock Falls, which can be viewed from many vantage points above and below the falls by hiking the easy trails. The park features swimming, boating, fishing and offers tent camping and cabins. A year-round destination, in winter enjoy cross-country skiing, sledding and ice skating. There is a fee to enter the state park.

For the next several miles, enjoy views of the lake, passing farmland and vineyards, both of which provide a real taste of the region. Deep lakes, rolling hills and moderate temperature create an ideal terrain for grape-growing. Over 30 wineries are open to visitors with tasting room and tours. This scenic drive encompasses the Cayuga Wine Trail — known for its exceptional award-winning wineries, warm, friendly, tasting rooms and a range of dining options, from upscale to bistros and cafés. Burgess Museum (M2), you can see original manuscripts by Thornton W. Burgess, author of Peter Cottontail and illustrations by Harrison Cady, which bring to literature many of the animals found in Briar Patch and the forests of Sandwich. The museum carries on the conservation work of Burgess, the renowned Sandwich resident, author and naturalist. Don’t miss a stroll through the Tussie Mussie herb garden and beautiful views of historic Shawme Pond. The museum is open from late-May to mid-October and is part of the Thornton W. Burgess Society which also maintains the Green Briar Nature Center featuring interpretive trails, wildflower gardens and natural history programs for all ages. The Green Briar Jam Kitchen built in 1903, is a living museum where you can take part in jam-making workshops, or purchase goodies from the gift shop. Adjacent to the Center is the 57-acre Briar Patch Conservation Area. Walking trails are open to the public and if you’re lucky, you might even see Peter Rabbit.

Cape Cod is about beaches and there are many. Town Neck Beach (W1) is accessed by a long boardwalk spanning the saltwater marsh and creek from which are spectacular views and fishing.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

Massachusetts: Cape Ann

Cape Ann is dramatically stunning. Traverse the beautiful rocky cape along the Atlantic Ocean and immerse yourself in seaside views dotted with historic lighthouses, beaches, classic New England architecture, hospitality and fresh-off-the-boat seafood.

Just 1 hour north of Boston, our scenic drive begins in the town of Rockport and travels to Salem. To reach Rockport, head east on MA-128 to Gloucester and turn left onto MA-127 towards Rockport. If you’re coming from the Essex area, be sure to stop at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum (M1). Over 8,000 artifacts, photographs and exhibits, tell the history of the small village of Essex that built more two-masted wooden fishing schooners than anywhere else in the world. See the original Evelina M. Goulart, an 83-foot schooner built in 1927 and used until the 1980s — one of seven historic Essex-built schooners that survive. There is an entrance fee. If you aren’t passing it, the vibrant town of Essex is worth a detour. Boasting many restaurants featuring seaside dining of tantalizing local fare, it is also famed for fried clams, where this delicacy was invented. Quaint shops line the streets and it is a haven for antiques and collectibles.

Before beginning our drive, head north on MA-127 to Halibut Point State Park (H1). Easy trails explore the northernmost point of this peninsula and bestow spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. Crashing waves, huge granite rocks and tide pools, make this a worthy stop. Formerly a working granite quarry, learn more about the region’s granite industry through self-guided walking tours or on Saturday mornings, park staff offer tours and granite cutting demonstrations as well as other nature programs including wildflower, tide pool and birding walks. Picnic on 440-million year old rocky ledges and let the fresh sea air and beauty rejuvenate the spirit. There is a small parking fee.

In Rockport, stop at Bearskin Neck (V1), a small “neck” of land that juts into Sandy Bay. Once a busy commercial dock, today it is a bustling with tourists and artists who come for the galleries, shops, restaurants, outstanding views and ambiance. Don’t miss capturing your own photograph, painting or drawing of the iconic red fishing shack Motif No. 1, considered “the most often-painted building in America.”

Visit the Cape Ann Light Station on Thatcher Island (A2) which is accessible with a ride on the Thatcher Island II Launch (free, but donations are appreciated), or your own boat. Walk the peaceful Island Trail and visit the 124-foot Twin Towers. Constructed in 1771, the towers feature a granite outer shell and a two-foot thick brick inner wall. Climb 154 steps to the top for magnificent views the ocean, Boston’s skyline, and the mountains of Maine. To visit, reservations must be made in advance by calling 617-599-2590. Remote camping is also available with reservation.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

Massachusetts: Mohawk Trail

Once a Mohawk Native American footpath, the trail has altered over time to accommodate new modes of transportation. As cars gained in popularity, in 1914 the Mohawk Trail was declared the first scenic auto route in the United States.

The scenic drive begins in the town of Greenfield and travels to Williamstown, but can be done in either direction. Take exit 26 off I-91 to reach Greenfield and head west on MA-2 to Greenfield.

Before beginning the drive, consider exploring a few sites in nearby towns. The Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center (H1) features 25 miles of trails including a hike to the 1,100-foot summit of Northfield Mountain, and a portion of the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail which travels from the Connecticut state line to Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire. In winter, trails are groomed for cross-county skiing and snowshoeing and along with fresh, crisp air; you can warm up by an outdoor fire and snack bar. Rock climbers will love the thrilling variety of routes and cliffs at Rose Ledge, or just relax with a picnic or enjoy a seasonal riverboat cruise. The land is owned by First Light which operates a hydroelectricity facility and offers environmental and recreation programs at the Visitor Center.

In the town of Gill, visit Barton Cove Recreation Area (H4) which features camping and is popular for canoe and kayaking, offering rentals and shuttles for long trips. A one-mile nature trail explores the river and an abandoned dinosaur footprint quarry.

In Turners Falls, tour the Great Falls Discovery Center (M1) to learn about the Connecticut River Watershed’s natural, cultural and industrial history. Look for wildlife, enjoy butterfly gardens and views while strolling through the four-acre park. Admission is free.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

Vermont: Vermont 100

Traversing the Green Mountains from Massachusetts to Quebec, Vermont Highway 100 is known as Vermont’s Main Street. Classic New England towns are a blend of history, white-steepled churches, dairy farms, ski resorts and outstanding scenery. The Green Mountains were formed 45-million years ago by Continental drift and are an extension of the Appalachian Mountains. Once as tall as the Alps, erosion and Ice Age glaciers have shaped them to their current beauty of gentle rolling green peaks. With so much to see and do — take your time and consider making this an overnight adventure.

Autumn Waitsfield

Our scenic drive starts in Wilmington and travels to Newport, however, you can do the drive in either direction. To reach Wilmington, travel west on VT-9 from I-91’s exit 2. VT-100 tends to meander, so keep a clear look out for signs along the way.

Before heading out from Wilmington, visit Molly Stark State Park (H1), named after the wife of Revolutionary War General John Stark. The park encompasses the 2,415-foot Mount Olga, and a hike to the fire tower at its summit affords stunning 360-degree views deep into the Berkshires, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. You will find other hikes and camping here.

We begin by heading north on VT-100, paralleling the Deerfield River. Shortly, views of Haystack Mountain appear, the southern-most member of the Green Mountains. The road climbs to West Dover. Ski and snowboarders will love the Mount Snow Ski Area, which is actually named after Reuben Snow who owned the land. Or visit the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum (M1). The small museum features over 600 native birds and mammals set in dioramas. Live raptors are also on display. There is an admission fee.

The road travels into the Green Mountain National Forest, descending to West Wardsboro and Stratton Mountain. In summer, take the gondola to the top of Stratton for panoramic views of the White Mountains, Adirondacks, Berkshires and the Green Mountains. Miles of hiking trails for every level trace the mountain, including a section of Vermont’s 265-mile Long Trail which travels from the Massachusetts line to the Canadian border, and 103.6 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Winter is a veritable wonderland of activities including alpine and cross-county skiing, snowshoeing, tubing, ice skating and snowmobiling. Just past the turn for Stratton, is Grout Pond (W1), popular for swimming, canoeing or kayaking. Surrounded by forest, enjoy a picnic, fishing, wildlife watching and remote camping.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

Vermont: Champlain Islands

The Champlain Islands sit amidst Lake Champlain, America’s sixth-largest, freshwater lake. Passing five quaint towns, discover a rich history, friendly people and a vast array of recreation opportunities, such as hiking, biking, boating and fishing or just absorbing the captivating water views, wildlife and dazzling sunsets. A four season wonderland, spring and summer bring theater and musical performances to the parks and the fresh scents of farms and orchards. Fall is renowned for its flamboyant display of color, and winter winds wisp across sun-glistened snow — and cross-country ski or snowshoe tracks. This spectacular region is just a short drive from the larger cities of Burlington, Plattsburgh, and Montreal.

Our scenic drive travels US-2 from Colchester to Alburg, but can be done in either direction. To reach Colchester, take exit 17 from I-89 for US-2 West.

Make your first stop Sand Bar State Park (W1), a natural sandbar created by sediment from the Lamoille Valley swept downstream by the Lamoille River. Shallow warm water and sandy beaches are popular for swimming — especially with kids. The park features canoe and kayak rentals, covered picnic shelters and BBQ grills. Don’t forget to admire the Stone Bath House, built in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. At the south and east ends of the park are marshland, part of the 1000-acre Sandbar Wildlife Refuge. Spring and fall bring migratory birds and among the year-round residents are beaver, muskrats, frogs and turtles. There is a day use fee to enter but if you plan on visiting other Vermont State Parks, consider a seasonal vehicle pass or punch card which is valid for 10 visits and never expires. Though there are no fees or services open in winter, the park is a big draw for snow-kiting, where kites are used to glide across the snow on skis or snowboards and trails can be used for cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.

Along the trip, keep your eyes out for Champ, the Lake Champlain version of the Loch Ness Monster. In 1609, Samuel de Champlain declared he saw a 20-foot snake-like creature with a horse-like head in the lake. There has since been over 300 reported sightings, but the camera-shy creature has never been caught on film. Have your camera ready.

The flat and gently sloped terrain of the islands are ideal for biking. Rent a bike or bring your own to travel the Champlain Islands Bikeways, a network of 5 bicycle routes passing historic hamlets, beautiful vistas and wildlife around Lake Champlain in New York, Vermont and Quebec.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

New Hampshire: Kancamagus Scenic Byway

Kancamagus Scenic Byway cuts through the heart of the White Mountain National Forest and is the highest roadway in the northeast, peaking at 2,900 feet on Mount Kancamagus. Revel in spectacular views of mountains, valleys, waterfalls and wild and scenic rivers. The “Kanc” is renowned for its fall foliage — when the hillsides light up with yellow birches, purple beeches, red maples in contrast with green spruce and hemlock trees, drawing thousands of leaf-peepers who crave the vivid display. Named for Chief Kancamagus, “The Fearless One”, who was the last leader of the Passaconaway Tribe in the late 1600s, the byway is also rich in Native American Indian history. Add in rustic covered bridges, waterfalls, recreation and the country charm of New England and you have the perfect adventure.

Rocky Gorge Scenic Area

This scenic drive begins in Conway, known for its historic buildings, cozy inns and shopping in quaint local shops and outlet stores and heads west to Lincoln. It can be done in either direction, and makes a great companion to the White Mountain Trail. Note that parking, trailheads and some day-use activities along this road require a White Mountain National Forest Pass. And be sure to have a full tank of gas. Maintaining the pristine forest means that towns lie of either side of this drive. There are no services at all along this stretch of Kancamagus.

Just before heading out, stop at the Saco Ranger District (I1) for more information on walking, hiking and biking trails or in winter for cross-country-skiing, snow-shoeing and snowmobiling. There are hundreds of trails along this drive each offering its own glimpse into the natural beauty of the region. Keep an eye out for moose, deer, fox, black bear and almost 200 species of birds, including the green heron.

Heading west, the Kancamagus Highway follows the curves of Swift River through the Saco River Valley and you will soon arrive at the Albany Covered Bridge (B1). This paddleford truss with arches style bridge was built in 1858, replacing a bridge built a year earlier that was destroyed in a windstorm. Explore this picture-worthy bridge by taking the path from the parking area. Great photos can also be had from the north side of the river. Leaving from the Covered Bridge Campground is the very popular Boulder Loop Trail (H1). The 3.1-mile loop divulges evidence of glaciers from the last Ice Age dragging across the granite. The trail passes it namesake — huge boulders and 18 interpretive signs along the path reveal the geology, history and culture of the region. Standing 1000-feet above the Passaconaway Valley, you will be rewarded with amazing views of Mount Passaconaway, Mount Chocorua, and Mount Middle Sister. Take caution and stay back from the fragile cliff ledges. When you get down, cool your toes in Swift River.

Champney Falls Trail (H11) is an easy 3.6-mile round trip on a logging road, through dense forest. At 1.4-miles take the spur loop trail which passes the beautiful Champney Falls and Pitcher Falls. Spring is best for impressive water flows as it tends to dry up by summer. In winter, you can watch climbers scale the frozen icy chutes — or if you’re experienced, climb it yourself. Trailhead begins at Champney Falls parking area.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

New Hampshire: White Mountain Trail

The White Mountain region is one of the most spectacular and beloved in New Hampshire. Less than 1/10th of the state’s population live here and much has been left untouched.

White Mountains

This scenic drive begins on I-93 heading north from Woodstock, which is about 60 miles north from Concord, and continues to Conway via US-302. It can be done in reverse and it’s a perfect extension to the Kancamagus Scenic Byway. Note that parking, trailheads and some day-use activities along this road require a White Mountain National Forest Pass. Save time by ordering online before heading out.

A typical interstate this is not. Heading north, you enter Franconia Notch State Park. Undulating hills, pristine lakes and miles of all-season trails offer much to see and do including hiking and ski trails, boating, wildlife watching, fishing and biking. The Franconia Notch Bike Path is a 20 mile round trip winding through some challenging steep ascents and descents, passing all the high points of the notch. It is also open to hikers.

With Mt. Liberty in the background, Flume Bridge is a picturesque sight. The covered bridge built in 1871 crosses the Pemigewasset River and is open for vehicle traffic. Pedestrians can take the footbridge.

Sitting at the foot of Mount Liberty is The Flume Gorge (H1), an incredible glacier-carved gorge. Start at the Visitor Center for entrance tickets to the gorge and learn about the area through interactive displays, interpretive programs and a 20 minute film presentation. (If you plan on experiencing both the Flume Gorge and Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, purchase a Discovery Pass which offers a discount. Except for access to the Flume Gorge, or other attractions, there is no charge to travel through Franconia Notch State Park.) The Flume is a natural gorge 800 feet long with granite walls looming more than 80 feet. To the loud sound of rushing water, get close up on the wooden bridge that travels along the flume. You’ll want to explore the few hiking trails that traverse the lush, mossy environment. Once through the gorge don’t miss the two trails on your left, passing glacial boulders, small waterfalls and majestic trees or the impressive Avalanche Falls. Continuing the hike is a delight for all senses with the sounds of birds chirping, the Pemigewasset River, more glacial boulders and other wonders such as Liberty Gorge, a mountain cascade through narrow rock. Look for Liberty Gorge Trail just off Ridge Path to get there. Spanning the “The Pool” is Sentinel Pine Bridge. This covered bridge was built in 1939 over a giant pine tree thought to be 100 years old when it fell during a hurricane. If you get a chance to look underneath, you will see the trunk.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

New Hampshire: Three Rivers Scenic Drive

White Mountain National Forest is home to 48 peaks over 4,000 feet, topped by Mount Washington, the highest mountain in the northeast and an iconic drive to its stately summit. Discover the sublime beauty of Pinkham Notch, waterfalls, rivers and lakes in a region synonymous with recreation.

Our drive begins in Glen and travels to Wentworth Location, but can be done in either direction. To reach Glen, we recommend using either the Kancamagus Scenic Byway or the White Mountain Trail, both of which start at I-93.

The first half of this scenic drive travels through the White Mountain National Forest. Note that parking, trailheads and some day-use activities along this road require a White Mountain National Forest Pass.

Heading north on NH-16, the road parallels the Ellis River and in Jackson, you enter the White Mountain National Forest. Stop to take in the breathtaking views of the Ellis River Valley. In a few miles, don’t miss the powerful chute of the 64-foot Glen Ellis Falls (H1). Follow the 0.3-mile easy trail from the parking area which leads through a tunnel under the highway. There is a viewing platform at the top and midway, as well as 150 stone steps down to the glistening green pool at the bottom. New Hampshire is adorned with many spectacular waterfalls and two more come up later in the drive.

Continuing north on NH-16, you soon arrive at the mountain pass Pinkham Notch (H2), named after Daniel Pinkham who explored this area in the 1700s on a sled pulled by a pig. Carved by glaciers, erosion and rivers, Pinkham Notch separates the Presidential, Wildcat and Carter-Moriah Ranges, creating a stunning landscape. Marvel at picture-perfect snow-dusted peaks and expansive views. Stop at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center located at the top of the Notch just south of Wildcat Ski Area which serves as a hiker hostel and restaurant as well. Many trails leave from here year-round including the Tuckerman Ravine Trail, which travels by Tuckerman Ravine, a glacial cirque left behind during the last ice-age and is the most popular route to the summit of the 6288-foot Mount Washington. An easier way to those incredible views can be had by taking the 1-mile, round trip, Square Ledge Trail. Be careful, the aptly named trail has steep drop-offs. Lost Pond Trail is another short walk to exquisite views of the reflecting mountains on Lost Pond and beaver dams. Or hike to Crystal Cascade a dazzling, two-tiered waterfall, both elegant and strong as tumbles through lush forest. The falls are about 3/10 of a mile up Tuckermans Ravine Trail.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

New Hampshire: New Hampshire 153

This curvy, two-lane highway is quintessential New England, passing dense forest, secluded lakes and ponds and historic towns. Though New Hampshire is renowned for its impressive autumn foliage, every season offers a unique landscape.

Our scenic drive begins in the town of Sanbornville, west of Lake Winnipesaukee, and heads north to Conway, gateway to the White Mountains. If you are coming from the south, use NH-101’s exit 7 and follow NH-125 and NH-16 towards Sanbornville.

If you’re craving water recreation, consider a side trip to Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New Hampshire. Beaches, small inlets and islands and a myriad of recreation opportunities make this a popular destination. Surrounded by small towns, each feature its own unique friendly atmosphere and provide lodging, dining and shopping. Take NH-109 West to the town of Wolfeboro, known as the Oldest Summer Resort in America.

From Sanbornville, head north on NH-153 which will bring you to historic Wakefield, home to several 18th and 19th-century buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The New Hampshire Farm Museum (M1) preserves and carries forward New Hampshire’s agricultural heritage. Explore the historic Jones house and tavern, see antique carriages and tractors, meet farm animals and tour vegetable, herb and flower gardens. The farm offers many seasonal events and hands-on activities. An entrance fee is charged though it is free to visit the Country Store, plentiful with fresh produce and unique gift items. Lovell Lake is a popular recreation area for boating, swimming, water-skiing and just basking in the scenic beauty.

Continuing north on NH-153, you drive through forest and lakes, tucked into the hills hugging the Maine border. About two miles from Effingham, stop at the Watts Wildlife Sanctuary (H1) on the banks of the Ossipee River. Over 200 acres of mixed forest with wooded swamp are protected, helping the conservation of species and habitats. Explore the Watts Trail. Though less than a mile long, it passes an incredibly diverse range of habitats offering the chance to glimpse Osprey, Great Blue Herons, beaver, mink, river otters and a host of aquatic insects.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

Kansas: Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway

The Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway encompasses two of the world’s most ecologically important wetlands — Cheyenne Bottoms, the largest marsh on the interior of the United States, and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. More than 60,000 acres of natural wetlands host hundreds of thousands of migrating ducks, geese, gulls, cranes and shorebirds annually creating a living spectacle of color, motion, and sound.

Photo courtesy of the Great Bend Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The scenic drive travels from Hoisington to Stafford. To reach Hoisington, take exit 184 off I-70 and follow US-281 south.

Kansas being flat and dry is a misconception. Heading east on KS-4 out of Hoisington, you soon arrive at one of the most important shorebird migration stops in the North America, Cheyenne Bottoms Preserve (A1). If roads are dry, explore the causeways by car and make sure you leave time to stroll the many trails. Enthralling any time of year, the marsh is a refuge for the endangered whooping crane, bald eagle and piping plover and home to mammals such as muskrat, beaver and mink. The Nature Conservancy preserves these fragile communities.

Stop at the Cheyenne Bottoms Scenic Overlook for a spectacular view of the landscape and the distinct 64-mile square mile depression that is Cheyenne Bottoms. Learn more from the interpretive panels dotted along the byway.

Nearby, the small town of Claflin is a historic gem. On Main Street, storefront facades evoke Claflin in the 1800s. Learn more about the region and its people at the Claflin Historical Society Museum (M1). Just to the north of town, explore seven historic bridges constructed of local limestone, built by the Work Projects Administration in the late 30s through the early 40s.

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive

Kansas: Flint Hills

The Flint Hills region of Kansas features vast expanses of rolling hills, limestone outcrops and tall grass swaying with the breeze. The largest swath of tallgrass prairie in the United States is a sight to behold and treasure.

Our scenic drive begins in the town of Manhattan and travels to Cassoday on the KS-177. Manhattan is the home of Kansas State University. To reach Manhattan, take exit 313 off of I-70.

Heading south on KS-177, you will be immersed in the splendorous views of open sky, limitless horizon and the mesmerizing dance of tallgrass as you arrive at the Konza Prairie Natural Area (H1), used for research by Kansas State University. This is one of the largest virgin tallgrass prairies remaining in the world. While portions are not accessible to the public, there are three fascinating trails that allow you to experience the geology of Flint Hills and upland tallgrass prairie, the 2.5-mile loop Konza Prairie Nature Trail, 4.4-mile Kings Creek Loop or the 6-mile Godwin Hill Loop. Explore the Hokanson Homestead built by Swedish settlers in 1878, original limestone barn and wildlife observation lean-to just off the Nature Trail Loop. Though it looks void of life, hundreds of species of animals live here including collared lizards, red fox, ornate box turtle, butterflies, and bison.

After crossing I-70, endless fields of tallgrass and wildflowers fill the landscape, much as it has for the last several million years. Originally by nature, and leaned early on by Native Americans, fire is essential to the regeneration of these fields. Today, the fields are burned systematically in spring, keeping trees and heavy brush from growing. The rocky limestone was used by Native Americans for spear heads and tools, and deterred pioneers from settling here, fearing that the ground would be impossible for farming.

Soon you arrive in the town of Council Grove, steeped in history. Walking through the town, one can just imagine the bustling activity as a hub on the Santa Fe Trail. History buffs will want to pick up a brochure with a self-guided tour of 24 historic sites. In 1825, the Government of the United States and the Osage chiefs signed a treaty that allowed free passage along the Santa Fe Trail for Americans and Mexicans — in exchange for $800. The tree under which it was signed no longer stands, but the remaining stump is a shrine at Council Oak (A1).

Continue reading... · Find another scenic drive
