Pre-registration was conducted at all STEP centres from 9-11 January which proved to be very helpful as it reduced the rush on the first day of lessons.

The tuition programme which has been running since the inception of SINDA has, to date, helped more than 20,000 students to better their grades in key subjects such as English, Maths and Science.

Two students, Nazihah and Shabna Shereen, both of whom are in Secondary 1 this year attribute their success to the STEP tuition programme. After attending STEP, Nazihah’s performance in Science improved significantly. Nazihah attained an aggregate of 234 in PSLE and made her school proud by emerging as the top student. Shabna, who was a Foundation student, is now in the Express Stream.

Join SINDA’s STEP Tuition and seize this opportunity to gain from both classroom lessons and E-Learning as well as beneficial coaching from dedicated and qualified teachers at affordable monthly fees!

For those who missed the registration, you can still do so at a STEP centre near you, or register online here. For more details on STEP tuition centres, visit www.sinda.org.sg or call 1800 295 4554.

More than 180 students took part in SINDA’s holiday activities. In November, some 28 primary school students enjoyed an enlightening overnight camp at the Singapore Philatelic Museum learning cool facts about Singapore’s stamp collection and old-school communication methods. In December, boys and girls discovered new soccer moves and tricks from their trainers at a soccer workshop conducted by the Ministry of Football.

Participant Jayavanan Neelagiri says: “The soccer competition was very fun. It was interesting to play with a team where I learnt to cooperate and be patient. I can’t wait for the next competition”.

On 15 December, more than 90 students turned up for an adventurous overnight camp at the Singapore Zoo just in time to see its newest lanky baby giraffe. Participants loved the behind-the-scenes tours that enabled them to get up close and personal with the Zoo’s lovable creatures. Best Camper awards were presented to six participants who were exemplary campers.

The holiday activities concluded with an invigorating dance workshop, “Take the Lead”, that taught participants various urban dance moves such as hip-hop and MTV style dance steps. Participants had fun choreographing and dancing in their own groups.

SINDA, together with the Tamils Representative Council (TRC) and the Singapore Indian Education Trust (SIET), gave out 800 back-to-school kits to students at the Indian Community Bursary Awards Ceremony (ICBAC) and Back-to-School Festival on 3 December at Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre. The event was also a celebration of strong partnership between TRC, SIET and SINDA who pooled their resources together to provide bursaries to needy students.

Each kit comprised of items worth over $100 including a school bag with stationary items, post-it pads, sports water bottles and vouchers for POPULAR bookshop and BATA Shoes. Guests had heaps of fun playing carnival games and attended parenting as well as art and craft workshops.

Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Halimah Yacob, graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour and presented bursaries to 68 students from low-income families. The bursaries will encourage students to perform well in their academics as well as help them with their educational expenses.

Said Mdm Halimah: “Despite all this support, whether it’s bursaries, back-to-school bags and so on, if parents are not interested, and don’t take a keen interest, don’t participate in their children’s education, it will have a very minimal impact…I hope that parents will continue to give strong support to their children in the Indian community so that the Indian community can continue to do better and better”.

Eighty-six participants, including students from Shuqun STEP Centre, Marsiling STEP Centre & Choa Chu Kang STEP Centre, had hands on experience in building Formula 1 cars and racing them at the end of a four half-day workshop, conducted from 19 November to 23 November.

The workshop helped to change perceptions of Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for Indian youth to develop an informed view about careers in Engineering, Formula One, Science and Technology.

Jasmine Sangeetha, who attended the workshop, shared, “I really enjoyed myself and the workshop. I learnt how to assemble a F1 car and understood the speed at which F1 cars travel. The workshop has kindled interest in engineering for me.”

Prizes were given out on the ‘finale race day’ with categories including Best Car Design, Fastest Car in the Primary Category, Fastest Car in the Secondary Category and Best Solidworks Design. Winners took home trophies and each participant received a certificate for attending the workshop. At the end of the workshop, youths who won considered participating in the ‘F1 in Schools Technology Challenge’.
