True Life: I am addicted to coffee

There comes a point in one's life where one realizes they have a problem. This point happened a couple days ago for me.

I woke up late and was rushing to get out of the house to make it to my internship on time. Sadly, I didn't have enough time to consume my regular morning coffee. I got on the bus and was just thinking the whole time about how badly I yearned for just one little cup of caffeine. I got there early with a mere 10 minutes to spare. The first place I went? Tim Hortons.

"Can I have a medium double double please", I said, rubbing the tiredness out of my eyes.

"That'll be $1.70."

I reached my debt card towards the cashier and she shook her head, "I'm sorry, we don't take debt here."

My world stopped. No. Debt? What does that even mean? I was furious! There was no way I could continue this day without at least one cup of coffee.

"Is there anywhere else I can go?" I pleaded, on the brink of tears.

"There's a Starbucks around the corner."

I felt a glimmer of hope. Yes, it'll cost me $1.00 more for coffee I don't really like, but it's coffee nonetheless and I just need my fix. I thanked her and quickly walked toward the direction she pointed to.

Everything fell into place when that warm coffee finally hit my lips, that familiar taste making my taste buds scream in joy. This day is going to be okay. I finally had a coffee.

Once that coffee was done and I felt like myself again, that's when I realized I had a problem. I shouldn't need a substance to make me feel like me. Thinking back even farther than a couple days ago, I've been drinking 1-2 cups of coffee everyday since high school.

Being a university student, coffee is considered a food group for us, but maybe we should start thinking about why we need it. I think it's fine to indulge in a cup once in awhile, but once its a dependancy problem, we really need to take a step back and evaluate the reason why we continue to drink it and the long term effects it could have on our health.

Personally, I believe my body is starting to rely on that caffeine to give it the energy it needs, but in turn, my body is not learning how to energize itself. So, instead of reaching for a cup of coffee, I'm starting to reach for a fruit smoothie or a cup of tea.

I'm only on my second day of being caffeine free and I'm craving some coffee at this moment, but I already feel better physically. Yeah, I'm a little more tired than usually, but I don't feel constantly bloated like coffee makes me feel. I've read that it takes 2-9 days for you to get over the caffeine withdrawal symptoms, so once I get to day 9, expect an update!

Hello readers!

This is a new segment I'm going to start adding to my blog. I always talk about these media headlines with my friends so I decided to take them to my blog! As my description says, I have a love for music and pop culture. The funny thing is, I don't agree with most things in pop culture and feel like everything is so shallow. So, I'm about to get skin deep and give you a taste on what I think about what the "world" (aka every entertainment channel) is talking about.

Solange and Jay-Z? I believe Jay-Z did something REALLY insulting to either Solange or Beyonce, because a girl doesn't just kick a guy's ass for fun. Considering the fact that Beyonce and Solange left together, I know for a fact that something is happening behind closed doors that we don't know.

I'm an avid reader of Blindgossip.com and they were discussing about a hollywood couple who got married for business and their marriage will be ending soon, once their last business arrangements were over. At the end of this "arrangement", they both will be leaving with heaps of money. All the comments pointed towards our favourite, "black royalty" couple.

All the blogs are buzzing about Beyonce no longer wearing her wedding ring and removing the tattoo from her ring finger that signified the day of their marriage. So, was their marriage just for business? I wouldn't be surprised. They always say two (super) stars shine brighter than one.

Now, the Willow and Rrrrriiiiiccccooo! drama. There is no drama. Okay, so she's 13, he's 20. He's shirtless, she is completely clothed. Oh, how scandalous! Come on people, Moises and Jaden are friends, therefore occasionally he will be in close proximity to Willow. I don't see anything sexual about the picture at all. If I was in that hot, LA heat, I'd be running around shirtless too! (Well not actually, we're speaking hypothetically here). I completely agree with Jada's comment, people are just trying to make something out of absolutely nothing. Must've been a slow news day.

This is just my opinion on what the media has been buzzing about for the last couple weeks. How about talking about something relevant like #BringOurGirlsBack? Oh ya, I forgot. Jay-Z having 100 problems is more important.

An Update On My Uni Life

It's been awhile since I actually talked about my university experience. To be honest, I've just been so focused on my radio show, finding a job once I move back home, and what I need to do to get where I need to be after I graduate. Yeah, my head isn't exactly in the present right now, but I have been up to some pretty interesting things!

1. I was an intern for the biggest news station in the Windsor area. I got to go to multiple events around Windsor and interact with the public. I even got to interview some of the event organizers, which I found extremely exciting! I still go to events when I can, but I'm not as active as I was during last semester. This showed me how much I like having a job that involves a lot of moving around and interacting with the public.

2. You may have noticed from my previous posts that I now have my own radio show at Cjam, the radio station at my school. It goes to the Windsor and Detroit area, so it's pretty exciting knowing people miles away can hear my voice on the radio. I've gotten great feed back so if you haven't heard it yet, click a post and let me know what you think!

3. For reading week, I got to go to Jamaica (as you can tell from the image on this post). Can I say ah-mazing?! I didn't even know a sky could look so clear and that the air could be so clean. If I ever become a millionaire, I know were I'm buying a beach house.

4. I've decided to move back home for the coming year. Having my own house and living with room mates was fun, but i've learned I really value my personal, quiet time when I'm at home and living with 5 other people, thats hard to come across. I hope to move back home, finally get another job, and since I'm closer to Toronto, get more immersed into media and communications.

5. I've become a bit of a gym rat. I'm in the gym at least 5 days a week. I got the opportunity to audition for an international cheerleading team so, it's about time I get into some kind of shape. I - I work ouuttt.

Well, that's basically what I've been up to for the last couple of months. I hope you are all having a fabulous semester! Leave comments and let me know how YOUR semester has been. I'm interested :)

Grammy Awards 2014: A Real Review

The Grammys is considered the most important night for music. All the legends come together for one night, just to get a bunch of awards and perform a few hit songs. But if you are an avid music lover and consistent grammy watcher such as myself, you may have noticed something about them. They are getting worse every year. This year was no exception. For such an event that is considered “the biggest night in music”, they seem to be lacking a lot of talented musicians. Hour and a half before the awards even start, the pre-show focuses solely on what or whom the “Musicians” are wearing, from their head to their fingernails. The performances have become such a spectacle that people forget that it is about the music. The same 10 people are nominated for multiple awards, where the best artist does not necessarily win.

Tune in an hour before the awards, and you will see what every “important” artist is wearing that night. Half the people they talked about during the red carpet weren’t even nominated. Why even discuss people who aren’t up for any awards? And as always, the presenters have to say the same thing to each person: “You look so good! Who are you wearing?”. Ariana Grande gave the best answer of that night: “I don’t know. I don’t really care about those things”. Me neither Ariana, me neither. After they are done gawking at their outfits, they have to also show off their sub-par manicures in the “Mani Cam”. Why should we care about what colour nail polish they are wearing? What does that have to do with their music?

Lets move onto the actual show. We just sat for an hour and a half hearing about what Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Pharrell were wearing and finally, the main event begins. No one else, but Queen B, Beyonce, can kick off this show. Though I am a major fan of Beyonce, her performance was better suited for her and Jay-Z’s bedroom. Lorde took to the stage to preform “Royals”, but instead of performing, she seemed to be convulsing and conducting an exorcism on herself. Katy Perry seemed to think she was the wicked witch from the satanic west and preformed “Dark Horse” in some interesting gothic attire. You cannot forget her awkward, stiff dance moves, and her obvious lip-syncing. Daft Punk performed that night also, if you could even call it performing. Really, they just stood in their robot helmets in front of futuristic looking soundboards and pressed random buttons. Stevie Wonder was the lucky one that night because he couldn’t see just how bad the performance around him was. Yeah, I went there.

Can we talk about the nominees? Lorde had one hit song that came 2 minutes ago and already has 2 grammy awards. Is it really that easy to win a grammy in todays day and age? Release one song, and than boom, you are a grammy-award winning artist. Daft Punk and Pharrell got nominated for just about every possible award there was and surprising left with only two. Kendrick Lamar got nominated for 7 and left with none. Can someone tell me why Macklemore got rap album of the year? If I rap about shopping in thrift shops and wearing my grand father’s coat, will I get a grammy too? He’s another newbie that walked away with a grammy, beating out Kanye and Jay-Z, whom had WAY better albums. That’s when I had to turn off the TV. Being a big hip-hop fan, I was not too pleased.

But we can’t forget about the real star that night who didn’t win any awards, has there own twitter page dedicated to them, cannot even speak, but was interviewed on the aftershow: Pharrell William’s hat. That big, Canadian Mountie/Arby’s logo looking thing was the only memorable aspect of that night. People are still talking about it, more so than the actual awards. But isn’t that the sad thing about it? People care more about this hat than they do the music, talent, or artists at the Grammys. Maybe if we stopped focusing on what their wearing, started nominating more than 6 people for every award, and have some different performers who aren’t focused on making a spectacle, but think more about the music they are producing, the next grammy’s could be much better. If this is considered the biggest night in music, the music industry has really fallen far.

Bucket List 2014: 20 things I hope to do before the year is over

The year is still at it's beginning stages. I believe it's the perfect time to make a bucket list of all the things I hope to accomplish this year. As I accomplish them, I will come back to cross them off and post a picture!

4. Learn how to bartend
5. Get a job I don't hate (bartender anyone?)

I re-watched the 30 seconds to mars music video for "City Of Angels" and I just have the sudden urge to drop everything and go to LA. There is also a shitload of snow here, so that could also urge me to get the hell out of the country. All I want to do is lie on a beach, learn to surf, and flirt with hot surfer boys. Is it too much to ask? Anyway, if you haven't seen the video before. I suggest you click that play button below. A few famous faces such as Lindsay Lohan, Kanye West, Ashley Olsen and Selena Gomez appear in the video and talk a little bit about their relationship to LA. This is probably one of the most powerful, real, inspiration videos I've seen. This reminds me to not give up and to push until I am in the position I want to be. To study that extra hour instead of browsing through Facebook. To not give up on a class I'm not doing well at, to push through it at all costs. The road to success is one filled with a lot of trial and error and sacrifice. If you're not trying to make it to the end, you will be just another stepping stone to someone else's success. Remember that.

I don't know if Kanye West is really smart or just really crazy. I get what he is saying, I feel where he is coming from sometimes, but he is a walking contradiction. I have a love/hate relationship. I feel like he is just reacting this way because no one really understood what Yeezus was about, and he's trying to justify calling himself a god. Or he's just really salty that no one wants to promote his clothing line. I'm thinking the latter.

I actually really like this mix, which is weird for me because I usually think anything with 'Mumford & Sons' in it to be a total snooze-fest. But this mix is telling me to give them another chance!

R. Kelly just recently released a new song titled "Cookie". I have included a wonderful quote from the song just so you can really grasp the complexity and emotion behind the words.

But really, it's just another song you would play in the club or blast in your car with the windows down. It's really different from R. Kelly's old slow jams, but the context never changes (he wants to lick the middle like an Oreo for god's sake). I hope his other songs are more R&B and a little less "gangsta".

Zane Lowe Kanye West Interview

I watched this recent interview of Kanye West and I couldn't help but be touched by what he says. It seems like once your a celebrity, it's like you're on a chain and being freely creative is nearly impossible. If you were equally confused about his new album, missing the old Kanye, and wondering what the hell he's going to do next, this 13 minute interview will clear everything up.

Hello All!

Just wanted to welcome everyone back for another year of My So-Called Uni Life! A few things have changed this year like:
-No longer majoring in English (realized Radio and Television was my thing)
-Just Majoring in Communications, Media, and Film with a minor in Business (holla!)
-Loving Drake's new album. Nothing beats Take Care I must say, but I'm still dedicating this post to NWTS
-Recently got an internship with AM800 (owned by Bell Media) as a Promoter!
-In the works of getting my own radio show at CJAM

Yeah, september has been hectic for me so far! Sadly, my blog didn't get the love that I wanted it to this summer

BUT

I'm still going to post as often as I can about my internship, radio show, and just... ya know... My So-Called Uni Life.
