Ultimately, your decision should be based on several factors.

Do you plan to make mystery shopping your main source of income? Do you live close to a city, or several larger towns? Do you have demands on your time? (Children, other work, home?) Do you have a driver's license, and a car at your disposal?

You have several options when deciding on how far you will go to do mystery shops. My general principle is to consider what other things I do, and where they take me frequently. I will try to keep my schedulers abreast of regular trips to larger cities, and see if I can arrange to do several shops for them while handling other business while there.

I personally usually do not consider shops that are 25 + miles away from my home unless there is a reason to do so. If a scheduler offers you a travel bonus for taking a shop further away that makes it worth it for you, if a scheduler offers you a series of shops that are close to your home in exchange for doing this one that is further away, or if you are given the flexibility of doing the shop on your schedule over a two week time period where you can fit it in as you like are all good reasons for accepting a shop that would normally be out of bounds to you.

A scheduler should not get upset with you if you are up front with them about your reasons for not accepting a shop. You also should not HAVE to GIVE a reason if you do not wish to do so. If a scheduler asks you why you do not wish the assignment, it may be because they have some ability to make slight accommodations for your circumstances to make the assignment more worth your while to do. However, if you simply do not wish to do any more assignments now, or do not want that particular assignment, you should be able to just say "I do not wish to take that assignment on at this time.".

Many people try to incorporate mystery shopping into planned trips. I only recommend this if you are an experienced shopper. It is difficult to navigate all of the requirements various companies have for their assignments while on the road, especially on a family vacation. Many require their forms be faxed back to them within 24 hours of completing the assignment. This can be tough if you are going from hotel to hotel or if you are trying to have a good time with your family. Many others require you submit your reports online. It can be difficult to fit in an online session while on the road. If you think this is something you would like to try, then my next suggestion to that you start with fast food shops, hotel shops, or restaurant shops. Those will be the easiest to fit into your schedule and make the best use of your travel time.

But some secrets are riskier than others, and some come with a price tag.

If one of your secrets is hiding spending, you’re not alone.

According to a recent American Express Spending & Saving Tracker of more than 2,000 adults, 27% of respondents have “misrepresented the amount of a purchase” while 30% said they have hidden purchases from their partner.

(I reported on the study in my column for MarketWatch.)

To keep spending under wraps, consumers responding to American Express’s survey have gone as far as:

–burying their purchase in the backyard

–pretending that goods came from Goodwill

–hiding purchases in grocery bags to bring them home

–arranging for items to arrive while their partner was away

–sneaking out and bought an item in the middle of the night

“You should not have any secrets from each other regarding money,” Ric Edelman, an author and financial adviser based in Fairfax, Va., recently told me. “You should be working together as a couple in the management of money.”

But working together when it comes to money can be tough given that many couples want to avoid money topics. In fact, couples say “they are more likely to know their partner’s weight than their salary,” according to American Express.

It’s “very common for people who get married to have no clue as to their partner’s income and debts,” Mr. Edelman says. “This is why money is one of the leading causes of divorce.”

Almost one in three couples say finances cause the most stress in their relationship, and 91% of Americans surveyed find reasons to avoid talking about money with their partner, according to American Express.

The data also indicate that different partners have different thresholds when it comes communicating about spending, with $275 being the average at which “couples need to consult with their partner before making a purchase,” according to American Express. That level rises to $395 among affluent consumers, and is $249 among young professionals.

Of note, 40% of respondents said they “believe their partner spends more money than they do on things outside of household expenditures,” while that same percentage “consider themselves more diligent than their partner when it comes to saving money and budgeting.”

Readers: Are you or your partner a secret shopper? What secret purchases have you made? What is your threshold for letting your partner know about purchases?

Nonetheless, we have a right to demand that counterterrorism organizations measure their performance and learn how to refine their analysis methods so they do the best possible job of protecting us.

One approach that might help is for the National Counterterrorism Center, an organization established in 2004 specifically to work on connecting dots, to adopt a version of the “mystery shopper” technique that many businesses use to measure and improve their performance.

In traditional settings, retail companies hire a mystery shopping service to send “undercover” shoppers into their stores to collect information on the customer experience, identifying both strengths and weaknesses. Management then uses that data to devise training programs to improve customer service.

Here’s how it would work in the National Counterterrorism Center: A dedicated staff would be responsible for sending information about fictional individuals into different parts of the intelligence system, whether National Security Agency telephone intercepts or reports from agents on the ground. The unit would be responsible for tracking whether and how analysts evaluated the information — that is, did they successfully connect the dots?

The center’s performance would be measured by the percentage of cases the analysts correctly identified as exhibiting a high risk of terrorist behavior. The metric could be tracked by organization, by team and eventually — when enough cases have been assembled — by analyst.

Before starting, the mystery shopper unit would need to develop a consensus about which information patterns suggest a high risk of terrorist activities. And it would need to avoid planting too many high-risk rumors, which could overwhelm the center’s resources. So the unit would also need to send noise or low-risk information as well and track the percentage of good hits versus low-risk hits. A mystery shopper unit would also want to vary the types of information it sends to see if certain sources or types are less likely to be successfully identified.

Like performance measures in general, if such metrics are used as a management tool, they should improve the performance of the counterterrorism system. Establishing challenging performance targets will motivate employees to work harder and be more vigilant. Varying the kinds of information fed into the system will allow officials to diagnose its weaknesses so agencies can better target training or changes in techniques.

Only you need to register in the mystery shopping site and complete your survey about a product or service what the provider company offers you. Yes you have to submit your credit card details when you sign up. Nothing should be charged from your account within the trial period.

Many Mystery Shopping companies provide online data for the user to avoid the costs and time to recruit mystery shoppers. Even for the user also it saves time by submitting online response form or feedback. Companies are spending millions of dollar for verifying customers response for there products and services. For that reason a new trend comes to the market as mystery shopping which provide a wide range to earn money for the secret shoppers.

For the newcomers mystery shopping may be a very unclear concept, as its literal meaning indicates some stealthy activity. However, mystery shopping has evolved into a genuine practice that aims to help both employers and employees evaluate their service quality; to help supervisors identify gaps in staff training, and to improve human resource spirits intentionally. Mystery shopping is no longer a substandard dramatization of customer visits, but a custom-tailored shopping experience that aims to disclose specific aspects of company’s services through carefully designed circumstances.

For Mystery shopping there is usually no qualification required. Mystery shoppers need to undergo some training and follow directions in order to conduct their mystery shopper visits in line with ethics. Companies that hire mystery shoppers usually have specific goals in mind; therefore, mystery shoppers should be instructed how best to follow the shopping status in order to collect information that helps accomplish companies’ goals. To provide objective insights, practical impersonation and accurate customer feedback is what mystery shoppers are paid for. As well direct payments, mystery shoppers also have a lot of elusive gains – they put in to the improvement of service quality in their area; Mystery shoppers also get a lot of free perks, free merchandise, free services, free vacations and family entertainment opportunities. One of the greatest gains for mystery shoppers is building a reputation, which can help them turn mystery shopping from an off-the-job hobby to a successful full-time career.

You have to give the reliable and precise information about the shopping experience to become a victorious mystery shopper. Also you need basic writing skills. The simple sentences which carry the overall impression and particulars what you are asked about. It should not be more complicated to understand. That’s all the secret of mystery shopping which you have to keep in mind always as a good secret shopper.

To be an expert in a mystery shopper profile, we need not require being only a good actor, but also be able to follow directions and to perform on possibilities effectively.

One of the attractiveness of mystery shopping is that we actually get ready for a real-time experience that is only partly staged. We cannot foresee all the situations that can occur, but can only get organized for our major tasks and goals – how to participate, what to require, what questions to ask, what demands to pose, what attitude to show, and what to examine. It is absolutely entertaining to be doing all these things concurrently posing as a real customer and watching out for all the details included in our task directions.

However, being a mystery shopper is more than just following the directions or instructions. Once deployed at our shopping location, we are required to focus not only on the particular details, but to clutch the whole picture and be an objective evaluator. Some mystery shoppers tend to exaggerate the methodological part and may go to extremes that are likely to expose them as mock customers. There are some situations when mystery shoppers are so anxious to take photos or ask the right questions that they end up retiring, turn over pages, walking about excitedly or acting erratically with their directions given.

This can be a consequence of the stress some secret shoppers may experience during their shopping task, but such states are likely to compromise the results of the mystery shopping task, rather than to serve its purposes. Even though newly mystery shoppers are likely to get a bit nervous on their first shopping assignment, we should keep in mind that we cannot give realistic picture of what the customer service on the specific premises is unless we our self act as a realistic customer. Therefore, there’s no better guidance to mystery shoppers than to be natural and realistic, according to their shopping directions.

Mystery shopping professions can be tremendously exciting, as shoppers need to play various characters – some pretend to be very particular; others pose to have some particular technological or design preferences, etc. Improvising from our mystery shopping directions is appreciated when it is constant with informative notes on important aspects of customer service. For example, if we are at an appliance store, it may be irrational to ask for a pink refrigerator or insist on being accessible a fridge that can also dry clothes, unless the same is specified in the directions or instructions provided.

Also, we can be vigilant for any urgent situation that might occur, and report it if it is rendered important – a wet floor, a difference with another customer, lack of cooperation between staff members or anything that caught by our sight. Even though we might have never had to monitor such details as a regular shopper, we need to certainly notice things that you didn’t like while doing actual shopping. Therefore, it’s not only the details we were instructed to monitor that are important, but also the overall ambiance and the customer friendliness of the shopping environment.

Becoming a mystery shopper is a demanding and entertaining experience with all the challenges that has important impact on the development of businesses. Following instructions or directions provided by the company is important, but we also need to be prepared to both grab the details and clutch the big picture in order to offer quality mystery shopping feedback result, while actually enjoying being a secret shopper.

Also referred to as secret shopping, performance evaluations, service checks and frontline evaluations to name a few, mystery shopping allows companies to obtain a “snapshot in time” by trained researchers who know in advance what they are to evaluate. It provides management a method to quickly yet efficiently evaluate their business practices, deliverables, and employees from the perspective of a non-biased consumer.

Mystery Shopping Services

Mystery shoppers visit or call businesses posing as ordinary customers and provide detailed evaluations of their experience using written reports or questionnaires.

Mystery shopping is used in a wide variety of industries such as retail, restaurants, financial institutions, convenience stores and gas stations, service providers, manufacturers, department stores, travel and entertainment, etc.

Mystery Shopper Jobs

Though there is a certain level of responsibility and professionalism required to be an effective mystery shopper, you should never have to pay to get a job. There are dozens of companies claiming that by paying them a registration fee they will send you job opportunities and teach you the steps to becoming a shopper. This may be true, but is also completely unnecessary.

The legitimate mystery shopping companies in the industry NEVER charge fees to the shopper. Training, tips for improvement, and shopping opportunities are provided free to registered shoppers. Mystery shoppers are either paid a pre-arranged fee for a particular shop, a reimbursement for a purchase or a combination of both. Though it is possible to make a living solely from mystery shopping, it is not very common. Most shoppers view this as a second income source or as a way to obtain fully reimbursed meals, products, and services.

The registration process with leading mystery shopping companies has improved over the years. Most provide a simple online form that takes only a few minutes to complete. Once you have registered with a company or two, they will start informing you of shopping opportunities. Most of these are “first-come, first-serve”, so be sure to provide the company with an email address that you check regularly, and a phone number where you can be easily reached.

Be willing to accept last minute assignments and treat bottom-of-the-barrel assignments just like top-of-the-line assignments. At first, take whatever you can get. This will allow you to build a reputation with each company. The old adage, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression,” is exceptionally true in this industry. Make sure you completely understand the instructions for the particular shop, be impartial, and focus on accuracy. You may be required to document employee names and descriptions, prices, inventory evaluations, etc.

Go hi-tech. More and more mystery shopping companies are requiring shoppers to have access to the Internet, email and a fax machine. Some shops even require the use of a digital camera to capture product placement, signage, cleanliness or other focus points.

Complete all assignments on time. If you absolutely cannot complete an assignment, contact the mystery shopping company immediately so they can reschedule the assignment. Dependable shoppers get the best assignments!

Assignments can be as basic as sitting in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant for 20 minutes to document drive-thru service times to taking an all-expense-paid trip to a resort for 2 weeks to document your daily service experiences.

Mystery Shopping Job Search Tips

Now that you understand the mystery shopping industry a little more clearly, the next step is to locate a few top mystery shopping providers and register, remembering that even if a firm doesn’t have a client in your area today, they may next month. Once registered with a company, it would not hurt to call or send an email to express your willingness to shop and to confirm your professionalism and attention to detail. Just make sure that you do not send an email full of typos and grammatical errors definitely not the type of first impression that you want to leave.

Another method for finding potential shopping opportunities and to gather further industry knowledge is by monitoring online mystery shopping message boards and forums. To locate a few, type words like “mystery shopping message board” or “mystery shopping forum” into your favorite browser.

Mystery shopping may not become your next career, but it will provide you with some extra income, free goods, and maybe even a few adventures along the way!

All one needs to do is send that company $19.95 and they will be sent the amazing, but true catalogue of legitimate companies that hire mystery shoppers. The first thing I'd like to say about mystery shopping is this. "If you have to pay, RUN AWAY." I was told this when I first heard about MSing (Mystery Shopping). I find that ninety-nine percent of the time, this phrase still holds true.

What IS mystery shopping? You, as an independent contractor, locate companies that use shoppers to evaluate different businesses in your area. I will show you how to locate great companies that use shoppers. Your job is to take this seriously and still have a good time.

What kind of pay should I expect? This all depends on you. Some assignments are reimbursement only, and some jobs are reimbursement plus a fee, and then there are jobs that just pay a fee. You pick which assignments you want to do, and how far you will go to do them. Average starting pay is between five and fifteen dollars an assignment. Once you have been shopping for a while and you know the ropes, pay is about twenty dollars an assignment. This is not always because the company you contract with raises the fee for you. It is because you will learn which shops are worth it for you to do them. You might turn down a restaurant shop that is reimbursement only because it does not pay a fee, and you like to eat at home. Another person may snatch those restaurant shops up because it is reimbursed and they want a night out with a meal. :)

How will I know if a specific company is legit or just another scam? There are many ways to determine whether you should work with a certain company. First, you get the company name. Let's use a fake company to show how it works. Here is Dalton Shoppers International (DSI). You've found their web address online. The first thing I would do is get answers to these questions. 1. How long is turn around times for pay? Current average is between four to six weeks. 2. How much do they pay on average per assignment?

Whichever way she disguises herself, she has to be as convincing an authentic shopper as possible, whether she’s opening a bank account or taking a boat ride at the aquarium in Dubai Mall.

She could be the person standing next to you in a bank, taking mental notes of how long the cashier takes to serve, how attentive staff are and how clean the branch is.

Step into the life of Sarah De Souza, a shopper incognito, whose name has been changed to protect her identity.

The 37-year-old mother of two from India is just one of thousands of people who scour banks, shops and hotels across the Emirates every hour of every day, clandestinely monitoring the level of service offered to customers. It’s a service that has become crucial for companies vying for customer loyalty, in a world where people are watching what they spend and where they spend it.

In fact, the growing emphasis on putting the patron first has inspired the country’s inaugural Customer Service Week, which will run from June 20 to June 24 at the Park Rotana hotel in Abu Dhabi. Developed by Ethos Consultancy, a customer service solutions provider in Dubai, the week-long event will host a number of workshops and forums “to grow and raise customer service standards through awareness, education and sharing of international best practice”.

Mrs De Souza, our mystery shopper, is just one part of this drive towards improved customer service.

She is on the front lines, collecting the information and data that’s crucial to understanding the confusing retail and banking landscape.

Before moving to the UAE four years ago, Mrs De Souza worked as a singer and dancer in India. And over the past year, she has participated in more than 800 jobs for Ethos Consultancy. The role is flexible; she can fill her mornings with four or five shopping trips and be home by the time her teenage daughters are back from school.

“I’d never done this line of work before,” she says. “But I’ve found it really interesting as it gives me a chance to meet a lot of people and also earn a bit of pocket money.”

Most of us are familiar with the frustrations of what some companies might consider “good service” in the Emirates, whether it’s being bombarded with calls selling loans or credit cards, or waiting endless hours for poor service from disinterested service workers.

Mrs De Souza’s job is to ensure companies are aware of any shortfalls in attending customers. Companies pay Ethos Consultancy to send its mystery shoppers to their stores and branches. But the timing is random and, after the appraisal is complete, the company receives a full report card on the quality of their customer service.

The information collected by the shopping spy is for the clients’ eyes only. Meanwhile, the feedback helps banks, hotels and retail outlets to keep on top of things, as they work harder than ever to win customer loyalty.

When it comes to banks, the role requires vigilance, objectivity and creativity in the way the information is collated and relayed back to clients, Mrs De Souza says.

Some of the criteria mystery shoppers look out for is how clean a bank is, whether ATMs are working or if a teller is present and how attentive they are.

They also assess how long it takes to be served and for their requests to be processed, as well as whether there’s adequate parking close to the branch.

“Without disturbing anybody, we are just mystery shopping,” says Mrs De Souza. “We are just finding out what is happening and reporting the truth to them [the clients].”

Hassan Harnoon, the vice president and head of distribution in the UAE for United Bank, says when it comes to keeping on top of the competition, mystery shoppers are a necessity. In fact, the bank employs these spies in all nine of its branches across the Emirates.

“Mystery shopping is one of the ways we can get unbiased views; all banks use it,” Mr Harnoon explains. “It is a good tool to improve customer service ... to make a difference, you need to be a cut above the rest. It is a buyer’s market now and you need to be careful about these things; it’s a bit like going back to basics.”

Mr Harnoon says the number of big banks has doubled in Dubai over the past 10 years, and in some cases, four or five rival financial institutions can be found in very close range to each other.

With banks mostly offering the same products, the only way they can distinguish themselves is through customer service.

Human contact has also diminished as more and more people choose to bank online.

Montaqa Gangari, the head of market intelligence and customer feedback at Commercial Bank of Dubai, says the results of the mystery shopper service are published across the firm.

“The service is crucial in highlighting our weaknesses as well as our strengths,” he says.

“We are able to keep an eye on where our services fall behind and quickly react to fix things so that we always meet and exceed our client expectations. It is also beneficial for identifying and recognising performing staff members and highlighting them as role models and service champions.”

In the retail and tourism sectors, mystery shoppers look for similar criteria when grading the businesses, such how they are addressed and treated by the salesperson, and whether employees are knowledgable and efficient.

“People need to make more effort, especially in the retail sector,” says Mrs De Souza. “It’s not only people in the UAE going shopping, there are tourists here, too. In some shops, you have to make yourself a little more visible before the staff attend you. Also, if I’m going to buy a laptop in an electronics shop, for example, the staff should know what each feature means.”

Ethos Consultancy, which has offered the mystery shopper service since 2004, now has about 3,000 shoppers on its books.

But becoming a shopper is no easy task, says Halima Anderson, the company’s consultancy and training director. Shoppers are put through a stringent screening and training process to ensure they’re as objective as possible when out shopping, and that personal emotions are kept at bay. The pay for each assignment is based on a number of factors, including the distance the shopper has to travel and the complexity of the questionnaire.

Those interested in becoming a mystery shopper can register on the website at msknowledgetrak.com, after which they will be contacted by a trainer from Ethos and invited to a mystery shopper orientation.

“It’s important they understand that they cannot be biased – this is not an opinion-based type of exercise,” Mrs Anderson says.

“It’s based on facts, so they have to remove their emotions. So even if they’re treated poorly, they can’t respond back to that individual poorly because although they’re acting as a real customer, they’re evaluating and need to be as objective as possible. So we drive that point home.”

A good grasp of the English language and grammar is also important, as the shoppers have two days after each mission to write and file a report. “Not everybody makes the cut, but we do our best to work with those individuals that can’t make it,” she explains. “We give them a test job and put them on probation for a certain amount of time. Then we rate their reports and they stay on probation until they reach a certain level.”
