We went to the Day of Service for Our Military at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. For an hour, we - along with thousands of other DC-area residents and visitors for the Inauguration - packed care packages for our deployed Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen. We were able to finish nine bags of goodies for the troops and even write a thank you letter that will be sent to deployed military personnel. The event was co-sponsored, by ServeDC, Operation Gratitude, and Target.

Let’s all hope that the appointment of a hero, leader, and soldier - General Shinseki - will bring the attention and change to the VA that our veterans deserve.

Here’s the email:

Yesterday, President-elect Obama announced General Eric Shinseki as his pick to be the new Secretary of the VA. General Shinseki is a decorated Vietnam veteran who was wounded in combat, and he is the first Asian American in US history to become a four-star general. As a former Army chief of staff, he is an experienced and respected leader with a history of courage and honesty, but he faces enormous challenges that will require his immediate attention, and bold leadership.

As a first step, we are recommending that he move quickly to appoint Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to key positions in his senior staff. 

IAVA has been working with the new administration’s transition team over the past several weeks, and we look forward to working with General Shinseki to implement the bold changes that are urgently needed at the VA.

Over the past summer, we sent a quick email to Kennywood Amusement Park (near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) to ask about military discounts. Here was their wonderful reply:

“We do have a military discount at Kennywood. Our discount is as follows: The active duty military person will receive $10.00 off of their admission with military ID and each of their dependents will receive $5.00 off with their military dependents ID. We do understand small children are not issued an ID, but they will still receive the discount as long as they are with a parent with a military ID. To receive your discount, just go into the Guest Relations Office to the right of the Kennywood Front Gate.”
