Here’s a video interview with Atlanta-area IT security expert, Ariel Silverstone, with an explanation we can actually understand!

Sliverstone explains how it’s possible for the unrest in Iran to arrive, uncensored, via the internet.

Silverstone also addresses the global initiative to keep the internet available to all. He talks about the years of Iran-related media now stored on YouTube/Google. And he discusses internet control, privacy issues, and pending legislation regarding the internet in the United States.

Several months ago, a small group of journalists and fellow travelers who are deeply concerned about the state of our local media met informally at the home of Len Witt, professor of communications at Kennesaw State University.

Between gulps of beer and slurps of his wife Diana’s delicious homemade chili, we had a wide-ranging discussion about how metro Atlanta can function effectively without a vibrant press to keep the public informed and assorted politicians and policymakers on their toes.

Part two if the discussion is set. The Atlanta Journalism Roundtable discussion group will gather with “Lens on Atlanta,” WPBA/WABE’s pioneering civic engagement portal.

Unlike the initial “get together” of this group at the home of Kennesaw State University professor Len Witt, this time we’ll have a formal agenda. After some brief personal introductions, we’ll focus on:

• A history and explanation of “Lens” by our hosts
• What’s the S.W.O.T. (Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats) to building sustainable and credible journalistic outlets in the digital age?
• Where do we go from here: What are the next steps for media innovators/entrepreneurs in metro Atlanta, in general, and the Roundtable in particular?

While the agenda seems mercifully short, we expect participants to bring their own fulsome ideas and opinions to the fore. We’re primarily inviting journalists who have started their own web sites and blogs but we’re also open to expanding the guest list to include other smart and daring innovators who have something to offer.
