Pumpkin Scissors Review

Lt. Alice Malvin leads an army division nicknamed " Pumpkin Scissors ". Despite mockery from superiors, her ragtag team manages to expose corruption and cover-ups left behind in a war-torn counry. Plot twists come fast as Malvin and her crew dig up a top secret government plans involving a super-soldier program. Echoes of World War II play heavily into this anime war adventure. And before long, her crew discovers one of these super-soldiers right amongst them. What can I say? This series, I expected to be a whacky and silly series based upon it's name alone. Pumpkin Scissors? I mean, come on! But its totally not. It captured my attention almost right away by the dark reality of what life is like, after war. Most of the problems that Lt. Malvin's team is faced with are trying to deal with ordinary citizens trying to live a normal life in a war-torn country. No one wants to cooperate, and no one trusts the army's efforts to try to rebuild a broken society. It's a very different take on an anime war story, and unfortunately, its very realistic. (coughIraqcough) Sometimes they come out on top, succeeding in doing good, and then other times their missions fail miserably. But it's still a fascinating portrayal of human struggle and endurance. Anyone could enjoy this series, but young children may not understand it. I recommend it.

Gunslinger Girl Review

Gunslinger Girl is a series about the missions of the Social Welfare Agency , but in spite of its name, this agency couldn't care-less about those to whom serves. ("Serves" with a bullet that is). They use a rather unique method of fulfilling their missions. They use orphaned, abused, or otherwise abandoned young girls and train them to become tactical combat killers. And its no wonder that Henrietta (shown in the picture), who's been living there, has become a hardened soul and a killer. Henrietta remembers nothing about her childhood, and somehow she's grown into someone who keeps an emotional distance from the hard truths about her life: that her family was mercilessly killed in cold blood. What makes this series unique, is that it touches on a sensitive subject that you don't often hear about in films, namely: children soldiers. It was interesting to see how these girls (although clearly unhappy) just kind of blindly "did their thing", cause its all that they knew. They were kind of brainwashed by this organization into believing that they should be thankful just to be living, and the only real good that they can do with their bodies is be used as living weapons. Even though its name sounds like this could be a "fun" series, this is totally not. If anything, I found this one to be not much else besides just an "interesting" series at best. It has a very serious tone to it, and it explores how the human soul can be changed and numbed after having to endure some of the most severest trials one can possibly face. I personally found this series to be interesting, but you may not want to invite aunt Gertrude over to watch it. It's not gruesome, just pretty violent and slightly disturbing at times. This is not a series for the skirmish. Or for those looking for wholesome family fun. You won't find that here.
