Family Update

I guess if you have been visiting the site, you’re like what happened to him. Well lets just say I am not a true blogger. I have also been putting things on the other site for my family in the USA. Its at: http://n3loh.info take a look if you wish.

So what has been going on here? Not to much, kids are in school and Gen is busy everyday with them. I have been on Facebook a lot playing a few games and meeting new people. It helps pass the day when I am not going to the mall or finding other things to do around the house.

Its is winter time here now and its been raining almost every evening. It has cooled down some what, so it is nicer to be out. I have not met anyone here in Davao like myself, so no new local friends as of yet. I have seen a few running around at the NCCC Mall, just have not been able to meet them. (they move around to fast) I still stay in contact with my friends in Cebu using Facebook and Skype. so I keep up on what is going on there.

So to all my Ham radio friends; NO RADIO HERE YET….Looks like that may not be happening until I get my own place here. So get up with me by email at: n3loh@arrl.net

I have not been able to keep EchoLink working due to the connection here, so I hope everyone in the SARA club is doing well.

New Beacon On the Air

Brian Justin, WA1ZMS, of Forest, Virginia, filed an application with the FCC for an experimental license to operate a propagation beacon on 70.005 MHz. On Monday May 3, a 70 MHz beacon — WE9XFT — went live at 1200 UTC. The beacon is located in Bedford, Virginia, atop Apple Orchard Mountain (4200 feet above sea level), a peak along the Blueridge Parkway in Maidenhead grid square FM07fm. The beacon operates 24 hours a day on a non-amateur experimental license, as there is no 70 MHz amateur band in the United States; the experimental license expires September 1.

WE9XFT is running 3kW ERP on 70.005 MHz, beaming toward Europe. Justin also operates a 144 MHz remote-controlled transmitter — WA1ZMS — at the same site. Using a 500 W transmitter running 7 kW ERP, it is GPS locked with two 5-element stacked Yagis beaming at 60 degrees. Both signals can be heard in the US and Europe.

NASA Sets Launch Date for Space Shuttle Atlantis

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to begin a 12-day flight to the International Space Station with a launch at 2:20 pm EDT on Friday, May 14, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The STS-132 mission is Atlantis’ final scheduled flight.
STS-132 is the third of five shuttle missions planned for 2010. Two flights remain until the retirement of the shuttle fleet. The STS-133 and STS-134 launches are targeted for September and November, respectively.

STS-132 will be Atlantis’ 32nd mission and the 34th shuttle flight dedicated to station assembly and maintenance.

iPad global launch

Apple has announced that its iPad tablet computer will go on sale in nine countries outside the US on 28 May.

The new markets are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

Facebook fixes security flaw

Facebook

has rushed to fix a security flaw that allowed users to eavesdrop on the live chats of their friends and see their pending friend requests.

The exploit used the site’s privacy features – intended to protect a user – to expose the personal information.

With just a few clicks users could spy on their friends’ personal chat messages and see who had requested to join their network.

Facebook temporarily removed the chat facility while it fixed the flaw.

IARU HF Championship

Objective

To contact as many other amateurs, especially IARU member society HQ stations, around the world as possible using the 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands.

Dates

The second full weekend of July, beginning 1200 UTC Saturday and ending 1200 UTC Sunday (July 10-11, 2010). Both Single and Multi operator stations may operate the entire 24-hour period.

Bands

160, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters. No contest QSOS on 12, 17, 30 or 60 meters.

ARRL Field Day is June 26-27, 2010

ARRL Field Day is the largest on-the-air operating event in Amateur Radio. It draws tens of thousands to the airwaves each year, bringing new and experienced hams together for a weekend of fun!

Objective

To work as many stations as possible on any and all amateur bands (excluding the 60, 30, 17, and 12-meter bands) and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. Field Day is open to all amateurs in the areas covered by the ARRL/RAC Field Organizations and countries within IARU Region 2. DX stations residing in other regions may be contacted for credit, but are not eligible to submit entries.

David R. Fraser, DU5/NU4W, SK

Tragedy has struck the amateur community here in the Philippines. Mr. David R. Fraser, DU5/NU4W, who lived in Tacloban City, met with an accident while on his bike around 1100Z on Monday 3rd of May, 2010. The news was relayed by Nathan Eamiguel, DU5AOK, moments after the accident. There is no information yet as to where his body will be interred.

After retirement, David chose to live his life in Tacloban City, his wife’s home town. He was active in Elmering hams from ACCESS 5 and assisted the club during the 2010 GSP INFEX & DX Contest.

Condolences to David’s family, may He rest in peace.
