Game Developers Conference (GDC) – Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) today announced that a public beta version of the Palm(R) webOS(TM) Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) is now available at the Palm Developer Center (developer.palm.com). Palm is demonstrating new games from early PDK developers in its booth at GDC (No. 2016).

The PDK complements the Palm webOS Software Development Kit (SDK), letting developers use C and C++ alongside the web technologies that power the SDK and mix them seamlessly within a single app. The PDK enables new functionality, including immersive 3D graphics, and gives developers who have built games for other platforms an easy way to bring their titles to the webOS platform. Developers can download the beta PDK and start developing today, but distribution of games built with the beta PDK will require functionality provided in an upcoming Palm webOS update.

“Palm webOS is the go-to platform for great games on two of the three leading carrier networks,” said Katie Mitic, senior vice president, Product Marketing, Palm, Inc. “We have both the developer tools and the hardware necessary for a world-class gaming experience, and an impressive portfolio of webOS game titles from top-notch developers to show for it.”

At CES in January, Palm introduced 12 games built by four leading developers with early access to the PDK:

“Asphalt 5″ (Gameloft)

“Brain Challenge(R)” (Gameloft)

“Glyder 2″ (Glu Mobile)

“Let’s Golf!” (Gameloft)

“MONOPOLY” (EA Mobile(TM))

“Need for Speed(TM) Undercover” (EA Mobile)

“SCRABBLE” (EA Mobile)

“Sudoku” (EA Mobile)

“Tetris(R)” (EA Mobile)

“The Oregon Trail” (Gameloft)

“The Sims(TM) 3″ (EA Mobile)

“X-Plane” (Laminar Research)

Since then, more than 20 exciting webOS titles have been launched by these early-access developers:

“Apollo” (Laminar Research)

“Assassin’s Creed(TM) – Altair’s Chronicles” (Gameloft)

“Brothers In Arms(R): Hour of Heroes” (Gameloft)

“Castle of Magic” (Gameloft)

“Deer Hunter 3D” (Glu Mobile)

“Dungeon Hunter” (Gameloft)

“Earthworm Jim” (Gameloft)

“Gangstar: West Coast Hustle” (Gameloft)

“Giant Fighting Robots” (Laminar Research)

“Guitar Hero 5 Mobile” (Glu Mobile)

“Hero of Sparta” (Gameloft)

“Real Soccer 2010″ (Gameloft)

“Real Tennis” (Gameloft)

“World Series of Poker: Hold’em Legend” (Glu Mobile)

“X-Plane Airliner” (Laminar Research)

“X-Plane Carrier” (Laminar Research)

“X-Plane Extreme” (Laminar Research)

“X-Plane Glider” (Laminar Research)

“X-Plane Helicopter” (Laminar Research)

“X-Plane Racing” (Laminar Research)

“X-Plane Space Shuttle” (Laminar Research)

“The Palm webOS PDK is extremely powerful and far-reaching, as evidenced by the number of titles we’ve been able to bring to the webOS platform in a very short time,” said Baudouin Corman, vice president of publishing, Americas, Gameloft. “It’s quite difficult to make a great phone that’s also an outstanding gaming platform; Palm has been successful delivering both.”

More information about the beta PDK is available at the Palm Developer Center (developer.palm.com).

The mobile phone has a long history which can be traced back over 100 years, although the original concept for a wireless telephone bears a very small resemblance to the kinds of handsets which are the staples of the modern market. The first cellular base station design for mobile phone use was created in 1945, but it was not until the 60s and 70s that mobile phones were conceived of as consumer devices. 1979 saw the first cellular networks appear in Japan and in the 80s western countries including the USA and the UK got mobile phone network coverage and the first handsets which were compatible with them. Before the mid 1990s, mobile phones were only used by those with enough money to afford the expensive hardware and tariff costs associated with calling. Mobiles used to be clunky too, with large battery packs and basic designs, though this has changed as technology has advanced and miniaturisation of key components has been possible.

Since the start of the new millennium, the mobile phone market has continued to grow and mobile phones themselves have changed significantly year on year. Mobile phones used to offer simple calling services and then SMS texting was added, along with voicemail. But the arrival of 3G networking in 2001 allowed for advanced mobile internet connectivity at high speeds and has since created a boom in mobile internet use and software downloads.

Mobile phones began to absorb multiple other technologies and functions as the years progressed. This included the ability to take digital photographs, shoot high quality video, play back music and video files and access social networking sites to upload and share captured files with friends and family. In the last three years the iPhone has created a new appetite in the mobile market, which has seen consumers focus more on mobile software rather than on the hardware behind it. The creation of the App Store, from which users can browse and download hundreds of thousands of unique programs, has caused every other manufacturer to attempt an imitation with varying degrees of success.

Touchscreen technology has also begun to play a big part in mobile phone culture in the modern age. Its existence has necessitated a change in the operating systems toward finger-friendly interactivity and a subsequent battle between many different operating systems has resulted. Today there are many smartphone platforms all battling for supremacy, including the iPhone OS, Google`s Android, Nokia`s Symbian, Samsung`s Bada and RIM`s BlackBerry OS. Other contenders including Maemo 5 and webOS confuse things even further and it is believed that in the future these various platforms will be whittled down to just four or five based on their popularity and sustainability.

Over the next few years, the biggest advancement to come to the mobile phone market will be 4G networking. This will see 3G replace by even faster mobile internet access, though there are many forms of technology which fall under the 4G banner. The first step which most people will benefit from is called LTE and it will allow download speeds that are several times quicker than current networking standards allow. Experts predict that mobile television, video streaming and gaming will all become more central as a result of high speed connectivity.

Mobile phones are also set to overtake standalone digital cameras & camcorders as the ability to record high definition clips becomes more widely available. The first smartphone sporting built-in projection technology are also likely to make an appearance this year, which will make mobile phones even more powerful multimedia devices than ever before. You will be able to create a large screen on virtually any surface for showcasing your videos for mate or watching a whole film.

“At its essence, the mobile phone is the most personal item you have in your possession. HTC Sense was created to magnify your ability to create and define your own unique mobile experience,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer of HTC Corporation. “HTC Legend and HTC Desire take Android to another level in both substance, with HTC Sense, and style, with HTC Legend’s revolutionary crafted aluminum unibody design.”

HTC Sense
HTC Sense is a user experience focused on putting people at the centre by making phones work in a more simple and natural way. This experience revolves around three fundamental principles that were developed by observing and listening to how people live and communicate. These core tenets of Make It Mine, Stay Close and Discover the Unexpected continue to be the key to the new HTC Sense experience.

The new HTC Sense experience continues to focus on improving your interactions with your most important people. This begins with a new HTC application and widget called HTC Friend Stream that seamlessly aggregates all of your social communication including Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr into one organised flow of updates. This simple aggregation makes it easier than ever to focus on what friends are doing as well as to view the images and links that they share. In addition to Friend Stream, people can be organised into specific social circles, such as groups of friends, colleagues or any other way that makes sense.

The new HTC Sense experience also introduces broad improvements to applications including the browser, email client and others. In addition, the new version of HTC Sense includes a new newsreader application and widget, as well as a new seven-screen ‘Leap’ thumbnail view for quick and easy access to specific screens.

HTC Legend
Built around a newly enhanced HTC Sense, the HTC Legend boasts a unique design with a smooth, continuous surface, machined from a single aluminum block into a seamless compact frame. To complement its looks, the HTC Legend includes a stunning 3.2 inch, AMOLED HVGA display. The traditional trackball has also been replaced with an optical joystick, surrounded by a narrow button to improve usability without interrupting its unique design.

HTC Desire
HTC Desire is the richest way to visually experience news, friends, photos, favourite places and whatever else is important on a mobile phone. With one of the most advanced displays available on a phone today, HTC Desire is designed with a large 3.7 inch AMOLED WVGA display to enhance and maximise content, whether it is pictures and videos, browsing the Web or checking on friends’ status updates. HTC Desire is powered by a one gigahertz Snapdragon processor and is Adobe Flash 10.1 ready. As with the HTC Legend, the HTC Desire also includes an optical joystick.

Patrick Chomet, Group Director of Terminals for Vodafone said, “HTC is a valued partner for Vodafone and has made a strong contribution to the growth of the mass market appeal of smartphones. Vodafone endeavours to offer our customers the widest and most compelling choice of smartphones and to that end the HTC Legend, the HTC Desire and the HTC HD mini will be ranged in selected Vodafone markets across our footprint. I’m particularly pleased that through our collaboration with HTC, Vodafone customers will experience a differentiated experience on the HTC Legend which will come customised for them with pre-loaded Vodafone 360 Internet services.”

Availability
The new HTC Legend will be available in Europe through Vodafone and in the direct channel beginning in April. It will roll out to other parts of the world including Asia in early Q2. HTC Desire will be broadly available to customers across major European and Asian markets in early Q2. The HTC Desire will be exclusively available in Australia through Telstra. The enhanced HTC Sense experience will also be offered as a free upgrade on the HTC Hero in Europe and Asia.

(NYSE: MOT) announced QUENCH with MOTOBLUR, Motorola’s Android-powered content delivery service, which organizes messages and synchronizes contacts to keep conversations in constant motion. QUENCH’s sleek touch-screen design, combined with great navigational features such as pinch and zoom and a touch pad, as well as the inclusion of Adobe Flash Lite, make browsing the web on its 3.1” high-resolution display a breeze. Motorola QUENCH™ will be available beginning in the first quarter of 2010. In the U.S., it will be called CLIQ XT™ and be available next month exclusively through T-Mobile USA. This is the eighth Android-powered device launched by Motorola around the globe.

“As we continue to expand Motorola’s portfolio of Android-powered devices, we remain committed to delivering more of what people want from their handheld devices in easier ways,” said Sanjay Jha, co-CEO of Motorola and CEO of Motorola Mobile Devices and Home business. “QUENCH with MOTOBLUR showcases Motorola’s design heritage by offering a compelling differentiation from the traditional Android experience, giving people an easier way to have more messaging, more Web and more music.”

MOTOBLUR is Motorola’s Android-powered content delivery service created to make phones more personal and socially smart. It is the first solution to sync contacts, posts, messages, photos and much more — from sources such as Facebook®, MySpace, Twitter®, Gmail™, work and personal e-mail and Last.FM — and automatically deliver them to the home screen. Content is fed into easy-to-manage streams allowing you to spend less time managing your life and more time living it.

Messaging is made easier on QUENCH with the combination of MOTOBLUR features, a palm and pocket-friendly design and Swype, a new feature that makes responding to messages and entering text easier than ever. MOTOBLUR keeps happenings, messages, news feeds and more readily available for browsing and responding on the customizable home screen. Contact information, such as email addresses, profile pictures and phone numbers, is automatically synced whenever the details change online, so there’s no need to manually update.

QUENCH delivers a complete Web experience on a full touch-screen device with pinch and zoom capabilities. Navigation is enhanced with a front-facing, centrally-located touch pad, so it’s easier and more intuitive to flick through the Web. Adobe Flash Lite enables rich media content such as banners and videos to be displayed and fully enjoyed on the 3.1” high-resolution display.

The innovative new connected media player on QUENCH is not only connected to the Internet but your social networks as well. QUENCH connects you to your music with a new style of media player that lets you buy and instantly download music from an MP3 store while integrating third-party apps such as TuneWiki, SoundHound, GoTV, and YouTube™. The music search feature makes finding your songs easy while synchronized lyrics in any language you choose make learning songs easier than before. Share your favorite tracks, discover new ones2, find lyrics, watch videos, and stream FM radio.

QUENCH enables clear calls using dual microphones and noise cancellation technology, while crystal clear pictures are enabled by a 5.0 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. Finding information online or within the device is made even easier with voice-activated search (English only). Simply say what you are looking for and QUENCH will find contacts, serve up Google™ Web search results based on location, or launch applications. Android Market™ provides fast access to more than 20,000 apps and widgets for limitless customizations and enhancements to QUENCH. Extras such as 3G and Wi-Fi® access, aGPS and stereo Bluetooth®1 make QUENCH a solid Android-powered device.

Finally, MOTOBLUR provides end-users with convenience and peace of mind, as lost devices can be located from a secure personal information portal and even remotely erased if necessary. Then, one user name and password brings back your contacts, messages and connectivity to your previously configured networks and email providers. Plus, with over-the-air updates, Motorola has the ability to improve current features and add new ones to QUENCH, ensuring the overall experience is continually enhanced.

Availability
QUENCH with MOTOBLUR will be available in multiple regions around the globe beginning in Q1 2010. In the U.S., the device will be called CLIQ XT with MOTOBLUR and will be available exclusively through T-Mobile USA beginning next month.

Sleek in design, the TG02 features a wide 10.4cm (4.1″)[i] VGA capacitive touchscreen, offering a fast, responsive user experience, while the same internal image tuning technology as used on the TG01 delivers rich, high-quality visuals in a slim (9.9mm1) and portable device – making it ideal for viewing movies and images while on the move.

A newly designed and highly-intuitive 3D menu system on the TG02 makes it easy for users to browse though the handset and access a range of entertainment features. Based on the very latest Windows Mobile® 6.5 platform, the TG02 enhances the user experience with its quick and easy operation. An internal 1GHz[ii] processor also makes the TG02 an ideal device for internet browsing, enabling users to quickly access and load websites or stream content.

Joining the TG02 at MWC is the impressive new K01 – a stylish, powerful and easy to use media device optimised for mobile messaging. Featuring a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that makes typing easy and comfortable, the K01 also offers Toshiba’s first-ever Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) capactive 10.4cm (4.1″)1 wide-screen – providing bright colour, contrast, lower power consumption and faster response times than ever before. The K01 also features super-slim design, measuring 12.9mm1 front to back, making each handset portable and stylish in equal measure.

The new user interface lets users quickly browse to their favourite features, saving time and making the mobile experience more enjoyable. The K01 also features a fast 1GHz2 processer and storage can be expanded up to 32GB[iii] using microSDHC cards, allowing users to store their favourite movies, music and games with plenty of room to spare.
