Bill “Watermelon Slim” Homans has built a remarkable reputation with his raw, impassioned intensity. HARP Magazine wrote “From sizzling slide guitar…to nitty-gritty harp blowing…to a gruff, resonating Okie twang, Slim delivers acutely personal workingman blues with both hands on the wheel of life, a bottle of hooch in his pocket, and the Bible on the passenger seat.” Check out his great rendition of ‘Devil’s Cadillac’ here

+ Cliff Stapleton of Blowzabella
Tuesday 27 March
8pm : £12.00 : £10.00 Concessions : Seated

Despite the group’s folk-friendly tools (violin, acoustic guitar, mandolin and accordion), they can’t be easily categorised. Guitarist Jon Hunt has a go. “We’ve got more to do with minimalist classical and dance music than we have with folk. Even though we use folk tunes, they’re raw materials that the rest of the sound is built around.” All four members, all four instruments, pull in the same direction, creating music that’s intricate yet so full of momentum and echoing – at various points – the work of Steve Reich, Michael Nyman and the Penguin Café Orchestra, but, kindred spirits aside, this is the music of Spiro – undeniably English, undeniably theirs.

8pm : £10.00 adv : £12.00 door

Some partnerships just work, even if it takes time. Eight years in the making, the debut album by Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat is a special thing, full of gorgeous, jazz-inflected love songs fleshed out with a mixture of spoken word pieces and vocals delivered in Aidan’s distinctive rhotic singing voice.
Wells is the Scottish multi-instrumentalist, composer, leader of the Bill Wells Octet and collaborator with The Pastels, Isobel Campbell, Future Pilot AKA and many more. Moffat is a man of many projects, and has a long history as one half of iconic Scots duo Arab Strap.

Peters’ own voice and guitar playing have been at the core of her music since she started performing in the Boulder, Colorado folk circuit as a teenager. Inspired by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and a new generation of songwriters rising out of Nashville that included Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith and Rodney Crowell, Peters relocated to Music City in the late 1980s. Since her 1996 debut The Secret Of Life Peters has recorded nine albums, the latest entitled Hello Cruel World.

SOLD OUT

This gig has been rescheduled from Friday 17the February to Sunday 25th March. Tickets remain valid for this new date.
“The psychedelic, electronic music of Django Django takes you through Sci-fi synth, African tribal beats and hypnotic three part harmonies. The synth and drums endlessly undulate and wobble only to be broken up by singer Vincent Neff’s extraordinarily catchy choruses. It is the appeal to commercial based vocals coupled with trippy bass and percussion sounds that makes them so magnificent”- James Kinsey for Redbrick

Performance 9- 10.30pm

“a sort of manic, jolly, literary talent competition mixed with a bit of a game of chance.” the Guardian. Ever been to a Literary Death Match? Brainchild of Todd Zuniga, this international event is ‘a kind of X-factor for books’– an exhilarating mix of talent and irreverent sparring that makes for a great night out. So Writers’ Centre Norwich is delighted to offer you the opportunity to experience the Literary Death Match at Norwich Arts Centre this March at a rollicking bash as part of LDM’s six-year celebrations. Fighting it out will be: performance poet Francesca Beard; playwright/performer Siddhartha Bose (author of Kalagora); Martin Figura (Whistle, Boring the Arse Off Young People) and Aisle16 poetry collective’s Ross Sutherland (Things To Do Before You Leave Town, Hyakuretsu Kyaku).

Drawing on the inspiration of electronica, ambient, classical and dance music as they take their strange, beautiful, cinematic, future music to exciting new vistas where the inspiration of Burial, Mount Kimbie and Flying Lotus rubs shoulders with the textures of Arve Henriksen and Bon Iver and echoes of Steve Reich and Max Richter.
Forerunners of the post-punk revival of the early 2000s, The Rapture mixed their early post-punk sound with electronic and dance elements. With the help of the DFA production team they recorded their now seminal full length debut album ‘Echoes’ which included the hit ‘House Of Jealous Lovers’. Phoenix producer/Cassius member Philippe Zdar produced their third release ‘In The Grace Of Your Love’ in November 2011.

James Vincent McMorrow has taken a somewhat circuitous route to success (hardcore rock, hip hop, a house by the Irish Sea and a growing love of folk). The haunting folk and mythic imagery of James’ debut album proves he is a brilliant new talent. ‘Early In The Morning’ is an atmospheric and absorbing listen, which peels back layers upon every visit. It can be musically sweet and lyrically maudlin by equal measure.

Hailed as a true original and aptly described as ‘folk noir’, Mary’s fragile, haunting voice perfectly conveys the surreal satires, bitter sweet romanticism and incisive wit of her songs. Mary has brought together a live band of string and horn players known as the Mary Hampton Cotillion, featuring Alice Eldridge on cello (ViV, Collectress), Seth Bennett on double bass (7 Hertz, Orchestre Tout Puissant de Marcel Duchamp, IDST), Jo Burke on vocals and fiddle (Laish, Collectress, London Bulgarian Choir), and Alistair Strachan on horns and percussion (Sons of Noel and Adrian, ViV, Hamilton Yarns, Crayola Lectern).

In 2002, John Osborne won a competition on John Peel’s Radio One show. His prize was a box of records that took eight years to listen to. This five-star, sell-out smash theatre hit of the Edinburgh Festival is an ode to radio, those records and anyone who’s ever sought solace in wireless. Featuring records previously owned by the late John Peel and partly adapted from his acclaimed book Radio Head (Radio 4’s Book Of The Week). Script edited by Joe Dunthorne (Submarine). “One of the Top Ten Theatre Highlights of the Edinburgh Festival… Funny, perceptive and charming” – * * * * The Telegraph.

Formed from the meeting of five lively minds in Nottingham in 2008 Dog Is Dead have self-released a trilogy of singles. Captivating their hometown of Nottingham almost immediately, a string of festival performances followed prompting Huw Stephens to declare ‘I defy you not to like this band’. Their appearance in the final episode of the current run of ‘Skins’, following in the footsteps of Foals and Crystal Castles, suggests where they are headed.

What followed was surprising, frightening and oddly emotional and Brett was on the front line for the whole thing.
He has waited 10 years to tell this story, mainly because it has taken this long to process it all and for the laws to change enough so that he could tell it.
LAUGH at the antics of the mafia! CRY at the loss of a young man’s innocence! MARVEL at the strippers and their magic ways! GASP at the backstage secrets. And CLAP POLITELY at the end when you realise you have just sat through someone else’s therapy.

‘A good story, brilliantly told… with an emotional acuity that matches his eye for absurdity and misadventure… Very fine.’ **** The Times

SOLD OUT

Featuring lyrics and vocals from King Creosote sung over musical backdrops arranged and recorded by Jon Hopkins, the tracks from Mercury Music Prize nominated ‘Diamond Mine’ are a genuine labour of love, recorded over a number of years without the pressure of deadlines, whenever Jon and KC could get together. Intended to be heard as a single experience, Diamond Mine produces a near classical suite of emotion ranging from cracked despair to patched-up euphoria. Described by King Creosote as a ‘soundtrack to a romanticised version of a life lived in a Scottish coastal village’, the record weaves in slices of Fife life, bike wheels, spring tides, tea cups and café chatter to produce a beautiful, unique and timeless piece of music.

It’s shouty-faced pop punk that’s pocketed Riot Grrrl’s bite, and been trapped under an avalanche of glowing pop hooks on the escape. Some bands would bite off their spouses fingers to have one song as good as ‘Cougar’; The Brownies deliver an energetic entire set’s worth.
