Nadai Nama Nama wishes to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Selamat Ari Gawai Dayak 2012. It is that time of the year again to celebrate Gawai Dayak which is closely related to a successful harvest season for the local natives whose livelihood depends mainly on paddy planting. In this modern times the festival can be symbolic for having achieved something for the year be it in career, education or personal.

Nadai Nama Nama attended the State Level Gawai Dayak 2012 Dinner event organised by the Sarawak Dayak National Union in Sibu on 26 May 2012 at the Kingwood Hotel Sibu.

The VIPs who graced the dinner last night

The ladies VIPs who were at the dinner last night

The dinner which was held at the Kingwood Hotel was full of colours and fun as various events were presented. It included the Kumang and Keling contest, pua kumbu weaving and design contest, entertainment by local singers like Urai and Clemence Joy, ngerebah ka ranyai and Gawai Toast amongst others. Traditional Orang Ulu dance was one of the items performed during the dinner.

The top performing students lining up

The event was made sweeter as there were incentives handed out to students who performed well in the public exams ~ sponsored by the honourable guest YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu himself.

The theme for this Gawai Dayak 2012 dinner is Segulai, Sejalai, Sepenemu. I find that quite catchy. Even though one may be very far away from the paddy field, in the end it will be that bowl of rice you are having for your meals that keeps you, your family, your community going. So let’s not take things for granted as we cherish the peace and prosperity that allows us to observe this Gawai Dayak. Aptly explained by the patron for that night YB Tan Sri William Mawam anak Ikom, he pointed out that this gathering reflects unity and all members of the community are present, no mateer which ideology or political divide they belong to.

The Beauty of Gawai~ Nadai Nama Nama wishes Happy Gawai Dayak 2012 to all

OhMy Gawai 2012 English!

Oh My Gawai 2012 Mood!

Nadai Nama Nama is in a Gawai mood. When the mood is there, then its quite natural that he pulls out his keyboard and start tapping away nonsensical into cyberspace. Nevertheless it is the time to be merry and jolly despite the fact that in the middle of the year its considered a peak period in terms of work, in terms of milestones for projects and in terms of everything in one's life. But hey, Gawai is Gawai, no English words can describe that more. Gawai Leave, Gawai hangover, Gawai celebration....its uniquely Gawai.

(Picture above is just an illustration and has no relevance to this post, but my pal on the right in the picture Tuan Pele will definitely be charging himself )

I have to admit, this coming Gawai 2012 many celebrants will be converting their homes/longhouses into a court of law. If you do not believe try visiting this Gawai and without you knowing it you will be 'Charged'. Usually this is pronounced as 'CHAS'. It is a positive connotation of 'having a bit too many drinks that you feel as if some electric currents are flowing in your body and that the high voltages are making you see double and triple thus causing an imbalance in the world order'. Hopefully some Oxford English people see this and take up this as the universal meaning. I do not use the word 'drunk' or 'intoxicated' because it does not apply as the word CHAS overules them. But you will never be charged enough or simply enda cukup chas in Iban. But in this Gawai court house you can be charged more than once.

So for this Gawai, I wish to state that it will be that time of the year again, where Oh My English does not matter at all. Maybe its due to Gawai spirits coming down from the skies distorting words and deleting its meanings. Thus it will be very hard to apply the court's rule of law if any dispute comes out of it. Try visiting a traditional longhouse this Gawai and you will discover that simple words like 'NO', 'A LITTLE BIT', 'ONE MORE', 'ONE FOR THE ROAD' or 'LAST GLASS' have disappeared from the dictionary.

DISCLAIMER: Now before anyone of those modern goody two shoes points a finger at me for spreading lies like that tabloid story story in Sarawak, what I say here is not based on desktop story telling but what I experienced myself for many many moons.

So let's start.

On Gawai visiting, it is the hosts' pride that they wish to share with you their skills in making tuak or rice wine after a bountiful harvest season. So its not easy to say 'NO' when a glass is offered and out of courtesy you can say 'A LITTLE BIT' and just sip it. Do comment how nice and sweet it is irregardless of how it tastes. It is usually nice but sometimes it turns out to be too sweet, bitter or sour. However expressive and honest you are during this time try to keep a straight face and control those facial muscles, even though your stomach is trying its best to to expel that foreign liquid you just swallowed. Which is why the quick solution is a 'One Go' or 'Bottoms up' so that you are spared of long term pain finishing it slowly. However it is risky also because the host will feel that they have not given you enough as your face have not turned red enough (preferably your face turns blue or pale white). So to say 'NO' will not have any effect at this point. Out of courtesy one can try to say 'ONE MORE' of that torturous tuak. But also do note that

'ONE MORE' usually leads another 'ONE MORE' as the host attempts to show off their wine making skills. Some adventurous hosts may have prepared pineapple tuak which is different from the rice wine and which you will be definitely asked to try 'A LITTLE BIT'.

Now comes the tricky part as these the words tends to be next but in no particular order After 'ONE MORE' its always followed by either 'ONE FOR THE ROAD' or 'LAST GLASS'. That tends to complicate things because its that time when you discover that the host wish to show you that they have prospered over the harvest year and wish to share with you a foreign label liquor. Now do not get me wrong again, as when this invitation is done out of respect for you. To cut the long story short, they just wish to share their best spirit with you. So its really hard to say 'NO' at this point again. To get out of this situation you should say just 'A LITTLE BIT' and luck will be on your side if they have just one label. If they have several labels or sometimes they say a 'Special bottle'. If the room seems to be moving around you then its time to really go for that final 'LAST GLASS'. Do note that Special Bottle means some weird looking bottle that has a foreign name which is usually harmless if you take a 'LITTLE BIT'.

Avoid the local tequila at all costs, famously known as langkau or cap apek. This langkau or cap apek is usually volatile ~ just the smell of it is enough to send you running helter skelter. Then again you can say 'NO' or try a 'LITTLE BIT'. Finally after that 'LAST GLASS' and 'ONE FOR THE ROAD' and before leaving the bilik of the kind host there will be a proposed 'TOAST' led by either you or the host. During each toast everyone in the bilik will have to say a few words for each glass of toast and round off with an Ooohaaaaa! shout. Phew....when am I going to end this.....okay right after you have that FINAL TOAST its time to go and visit the next bilik in the longhouse. The same routine is expected in here and usually the next host will whisper to you, I have a special bottle......that you must try a 'LITTLE BIT'. So if the longhouse you are visiting has moe than 40 biliks......the best English word that may not have meaning for you now is Good Luck.

On a final note I wish to advice all Gawai Dayak celebrants be it hosts or visitors, please do not drink and drive. This is where you will really, really, be CHARGED and it will be by the PDRM Police. That traffic cop will be testing your breath and ask you 'CUKUP CHAS'? (CHARGED ENOUGH?) and you can tell him that you only had 'A LITTLE BIT' even though you drove on the wrong side of the road. Then you will be charged by King Robert in the Court of Law and no fancy lawyers with names like Johnny Walker, Jim Beam or Jack Daniels can save you.

Finally my ONE FOR THE ROAD toast wish in English for this post is 'HAVE A PROSPEROUS & HAPPY GAWAI DAYAK 2012', LET's GO CHARGING.

Benak's New Friends

Cassidy & Henry Up Close and Personal With Ben

Pesta Benak 2012 was some sort of homecoming for me as I managed to visit Sri Aman to experience a day's adventure. The carnival was held from 6-8 April 2012. Though I started early from Kuching that Saturday, traffic was a crawl as vehicles of all shapes and sizes squeezed themselves into any available space in Sri Aman Town. Experience helped in this case as I managed to find a parking space at the Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) office nearby.

Traffic in Sri Aman that Saturday night (7 April 2012) was almost a standstill

The Pesta experience started as soon as I walked into the waterfront area as familiar faces came up to say hello. I was eager to also meet my friend Ben @ Benak and I know he is always punctual. Sri Aman JKR Divisional Engineer Tuan Cassidy Morris and DID Engineer Tuan Henry Tuah asked me to hop in their boat and off we went to greet Ben upriver. The scene from the river was a spectacular sight, the crowd numbering in the thousands filled the Waterfont area and also the Benak Panorama Park area. There were boats of all shapes and sizes, jet skis and that familiar helicopter hovering in the air. Then from a distance there was the surfers numbering about ten this time. I see them riding the waves, some surfing and some thrown back into the water by Ben's mighty waves. I know how that feels, as I have tasted the waters of Batang Lupar and may I say not in a very nice way. I still have this sore shoulder from that fall while playing with a surf board along Batang Lupar River. My knees were shaking more, not out of inexperience but more of fear on what lies below as Batang Lupar was famous for its large crocodiles. I have to say, it is not easy to pretend that they are not below.

Ouch: all in vain ~ trying my best not to fall into the 'teh c' coloured water during Pesta Benak 2011

Well, enough of that mouthful story about me drinking the river water last year. Its time to share the story of my two friends who seemed to enjoyed their moments during Pesta Benak 2012. This post will feature their adventure of being chased by the benak. The clips were taken by DE Cassidy for me to edit, but more towards getting it prepared for Pesta Benak 2013 but hey, why waste a good story about the videoman himself. Both of them kept Ben @ Benak company when I was not around. Cheers to both of you and a toast to your experience. I must say they had a splashing time.

Get their point of view below:

Cheers!

Pesta Benak 2012 Dedications

Memories Of Pesta Benak 2011

Its been almost three months of saying adios to Sri Aman, but I feel I would not have done my part if I did not publish the second part of the Pesta Benak 2012 promo which I prepard earlier. After sourcing out all the necessary movies clips and experimenting with a few Movie making softwares, I wish to stick with the simple Windows Movie maker. Most of my March 2012 blogging time has been trying to fit in all this promo movie story line, So to the people of Sri Aman and the organisers of Pesta Benak 2012 Sri Aman, I share with you (and all Benak @ Tidal Bore fans) the part two of the promo video.

May Pesta Benak 2012 this year be merry and grand. I am not sure of being able to make it though I do wish I can. Being in another capacity it is certainly hard to find the free time to meet my Sri Amanian friends once again.

So here I am in my new office after reporting for duty on 16 January 2012. I forsee that this is going to be an exciting journey. So what lies ahead as I sit here heading Section 4 of the Human Resource Management (HRM) Unit, Chief Minister's Department. In a way it was homecoming for me. My new office located at Wisma Bapa Malaysia brings many memories. It was here that I reported for duty, in July 1994 and again in September 2001 (after our Ministry was relocated to the State Office Complex in 1998) before leaving for Sri Aman in 2008. I could recall that first day as I dropped by at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism as a newly recruited officer, still wet behind the ears. At the lobby I could recall how the occupants of the building looked older than me. Lots of people in dark coloured coats and bright colourful neckties. And large neckties they were. Mine was an outrageously thin necktie which did not match my maroon shirt and cream khaki trousers. This was a 'no no' dress code at that time but I guess being a new kid in the block I was forgiven.

Today it seems that everyone was new as I see lots of young faces at the lobby, while waiting for the lift. I was trying my best to catch glimpses of familiar faces. But I am fortunate as my new team at Section 4 made me feel at home instantly. During the signing of handing over notes, I was appropriately briefed on the challenges that lay ahead for the HRM Unit. The Chief Minister's Department was on an important mission. In line with the Government's Transformation Programme (GTP) spearheaded by the YAB Prime Minister via YB Dato' Sri Idris Jala, the State Government is also embarking on its own parallel transformation programme. Yes this Human Resource thingy is something new to me but its time to roll up my sleeves and learn something new. One colleague assured me that human resource management is nothing new. "We do HR everyday without us knowing it". When we apply for a job, to filling in job descriptions, attend in house training, apply for sick or study leave.......thats HR.

But 2012 opens with a different beginning. Gone will be the day to day type of administration as our State Secretary stresses on the need for a paradigm shift towards transformational management. The target is very high ~ becoming a strategic government to achieve World Class status. This means to review and redevelop procedures, processes and policies of world class standards. So that is a tall order is it not? But after a few years of serving on the ground (Sri Aman) I would say I can relate to this calling.

Look at it this way, after many eons of tidal bore @ benak occurrence at the mighty Batang Lupar river, not many people would have dared (or thought about it) to surf the waves on a longboard. That's when a Frenchmen by the name of Antony Colas came to Sri Aman in 2009 and changed that perception.

It takes mind over matter (after hearing all those stories on the giant crocodiles in the river including the famous Bujang Senang) to step on a surf board and play along Batang Lupar. The presence of the international surfers to guide and show you how its done helps one overcome this fear factor. You'll fall once, twice and many times but that's part of the learning process. Similarly this is the what the transformation journey is going to be like. You can give many excuses on why it can't be done but not until you try. You'll fall and fall, but hey there are others who have achieved World Class status. We can't say it can't be done. So pick up your longboard and together we can surf this Transformational Wave.

Mark & Azzie

Congratulations to Mark & Azelea

There was another wedding to attend this weekend and i said 'hullo hullo' the groom's name is again Mark. Did I just not attend a Mark's wedding two weeks ago? The wedding happened to be my boss's daughter, Ms Azelea Bakrie, the eldest daughter to Mr. Bakrie Zaini who is currently the Director for the Human Resource Management Unit of the Chief Minister's Department. The wedding was held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). The wedding was new to me in many ways. It was a Malay wedding ceremony, full of colours and tradition where the groom, Mr. Mark Ali Stephens, who is obviously not from this part of the world (he's from Devon County, England by the way) wore the Malay traditional attire. So did his brother Mr. Jonathan who was the best man. Mr. Bakrie's two younger daughters who were the bridesmaid wore modern dress which blends well with the couple they were accompanying. Most Malay wedding ceremonies I attend is usually in the morning. This is another unique celebration which can be summarised in a blog about inter-marriages in Sarawak by YBhg Datu Aloysius Dris entitled A Uniqueness That is Distinctly Sarawak.

The stage is all set for the enthronement ceremony (adat bersanding) at The Great Hall, Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK)

The towering wedding cake on stage

Those attending the wedding can write their congratulatory messages at the entrance of the Great Hall BCCK

Traditional welcome: the arrival of the couple, Mr. & Mrs. Mark Ali Stephens

The couple walks into the limelight

The couple's grand entrance together with their Best Man and Bridesmaids

Proceeding towards the stage

Lined up to enjoy the cultural performances

Here the silat which is the traditional Malay martial arts is being displayed in front of the couple

The breathtaking view from the high table

More cultural dances being performed for the couple and guests

Raja Sehari or the royalty for the day

The tepung tawar or blessing ceremony here is being performed by the bride's father Mr. Bakrie Zaini

The groom's father performing the tepung tawar

The Makan Nasi Temuan is the interesting part where the bride and groom feeds one another the fastest they can. This is explained better by Borneo Love in her blog entitled Sarawak Malay Weddings.

Makan Nasi Temuan even: The result for Mr. & Mrs. Mark Ali Stephens ~ it was a draw

The cake cutting ceremony by the bride and groom

Its cake feeding time

The final part of the night was a thank you speech by Mr. Bakrie Zaini

At the end of the ceremony one cannot escape the feeling of how fortunate we are in Sarawak to be able to witness such unique weddings. Love knows no boundaries, that's what one can deduce when we notice here on how it overcame the continental, traditional and religious barriers. I have attended many weddings of all sorts and I can say no two weddings are always the same. That's the wonders of being in a multi-racial, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country where we are free to observe our different practices and for the outsider this can be a culturally enriching experience. From the church to the temples, to the bersandings to the longhouses and kampung (villages) its all there to cherish and appreciate. This is uniquely Sarawak, you are so right YBhg Datu Aloysius. There will never be a clash of cultures here, just a colourful blend of the different cultures. Cheers everyone and Congratulations again to Mark and Azzie again. God Bless.

Mark & Dayen

Congratulations on Your Wedding

The Year of the Dragon starts well for a close friend who is finally getting married. I had been asking him many times about this big day without getting any answers. Finally it was the Dragon that provided the answer. It was held at the beautiful new building of Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA). I would have loved to take some shots of the building but the focus now was of Mark and his bride. Furthermore I was late after a few traffic lights and jams. Back in Sri Aman I can make it 10 minutes to any destination radius from where I stayed. So I guess I need some time to adjust to the traffic trends here in Kuching. But drove within the speed limit I did and arrived just in time to see the couple settled at thier high table.

Mark and Dayen ~ All smiles for their big day

The studio photo of the couple at the entrance

The DBNA building was simply marvelous to have this function and yes the funds for its construction was given by our YAB Prime Minister.

The kiss ~ there was no second take on this, so I had to compete with the other cameras to capture the moment from a distance.

The dance ~ they had fun

Shake it baby 'the moment of truth' ~ Mark gives it his best to open that bottle

And pop goes the bottle allowing for a free flow of 'toast' wine

Eric Clapton's 'Wonderful tonight' song dedicated by Mark to his lovely missus Dayen

Pretty Dayen getting another loving kiss from her guy ~ may the year of the Dragon gives both of you all the romance and luck and hopefully we can see some little baby dragons flying around soon

Final pose with the lucky couple

One of the speakers at the wedding mentioned, "Wedding rings are the smallest handcuffs in the world. Despite that, let love be 30% of a married life and the remaining 70% be forgiveness and understanding". May we take some time to absorb the statistics given by the seasoned speaker. Maybe there will be some discounts after several years of marriage, no? Some give and take is what he probably mean. So Mark and Dayen, another round of congratulations from Nadai Nama Nama. A toast to your perfect love story.

Happy Chinese New Year 2012

Gong Xi Fa Chai To All

I wish to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New year 2012. Everyone is excited about the year of the water dragon. It will be indeed a challenging year for most of us. That is what most of the soothsayers, astrologers and fortune tellers are telling us. My simple thoughts ~ you have the dragon which has been depicted as fire breathing doom bringers, then you have the water. Two elements of the water dragon neutralising one another. But both elements can also be destructive too. Fire has been known to be a force of destruction and civilisation as depicted in the bible stories of Sodom and Gomorrah. Raiding barbarians in ancient times used fire to stamp their mark by burning down anything that stand in their way. Water in the form of tsunamis and raging floods can also leave a ferocious wave of destruction.

So looking at the force of these two elements, we ask ourselves again, what is in store for us in this Year of the Water Drago. Both elements if used wisely can bring prosperity, peace and health to our well being. A friend tried to explain to me that the myths of Western and Eastern Dragons were different as the Chinese dragons require water for power. I agree with him totally as we can see how nuclear reactors for example need a lot of water to channel its 'good' energy. Picking from this I guess I have to say that the key to prosperity, peace and health is about balance and moderation. One must not be too greedy as a means to gain quick wealth. In earning abundance once should learn to practice charity and goodwill, giving back to society. It means a journey to long term prosperity and respect. Extremism in either direction, be it leftist or rightist brings war, terrorism and destruction. In moderation, acceptance and tolerance, peace can given a chance. Balance in mind (work and play) and body, in the food we take and drinks we consume means the road to good health. Yes, I have to say the Water Dragon has a lot to teach us as we journey together with it,

Be the idea of Western or Eastern dragon, its good to collect the good ideas be it from the East and West. That was how spaghetti was introduced in Italy and tea in Britain. In contrast, too much of the bad thing like opium introduced by the West to China led to its downfall. The best option is to embrace Balance. That I believe how Samsung and iPhone came into existence. To balance this I bought a Blackberry.....hahahahahaha!

Some nice fireworks scenes i captured from my neighbourhood in my hometown Sibu on Chinese New Year Eve

Sibu town was transformed into a 'war zone' temporary as my neighbours lit the skies with their colourful fireworks

Happy Chinese New Year 2012 to all from Nada Nama Nama. May we discover the balance we seek within the Dragon in us and use the energies wisely. Gong Xi Fa Chai 2012.

Closing Sri Aman Chapter

Hello and Goodbye

There is a saying that goes 'All good things must come to an end'. So it will be for my tour of duty in Sri Aman Division. I started off quite jittery after having spent most of my time in headquarters. The ground zero experience is a very humbling one. Being the next person after the Resident is no easy task and one has to possess the knowledge that a divisional head administrator must have. Sometimes you just have to use your gut feeling when the occasion requires it.

There were many challenging moments on record each and everyday in Sri Aman but none would be as memorable as the SK Nanga Klassen bridge story. Most of it has been documented in this blog. Education and the well being of schools has always been in my heart and as I had opened the SK Klassen story, I will also close it with the SK Klassen story. Thus it is my wish that in future, many more charitable organisations would focus on chipping in to the development of schools and education not only in Sri Aman but also the other rural areas in Sarawak.

Kuching Rotary Central President Mr. Juergen Ertl symbolically handing over bicycles and letter of intent to provide free eye screening and health screening (deworming tablets) to the Headmaster Mr. Masan @ David Renang witnessed by the District Governor Tuan Haji Zaini Abdul Aucasa with the Rotarian members and also representatives from the school. The coordinator Mr. Chieng Lee Chin is second from the right. The event was held at Riverside Hotel, Kuching.

Kuching Rotary Central has kindly agreed to select SK Nanga Klassen for its rural outreach program and this includes the giving of bicycles, free eye screening and spectacles and deworming tablets. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Kuching Rotary Central for their kind contribution. Its member Mr. Chieng Lee Chin, who is instrumental in starting this effort has worked with me on the rural outreach program since last year and it will not be the last. In fact these contributions which bring meaning to the students in the rural areas is encouraged and I have discussed with corporations and banks on how they may chip in to motivate rural students. But with this effort in Sri Aman, so far only Kuching Rotary Central and NSTP responded positively in 2010, 2011 and this year. In 2010 the NSTP came in to assist four schools from their "The Mines Beneficiary Schools- Funds from Charity Golf with Gary Player" as described in Cikgu Charles' Dare To Dream blog.

Headmaster for SK Klassen in 2010 Mr. Sylvester Embuas receiving mock cheque from NSTP's The Mines Beneficiary Schools- Funds from Charity Golf with Gary Player on Feb 2010

Hostels are never five stars in rural schools

Furniture, cupboards are not always the IKEA standard

The kindergarden students do not mind a three legged chair

You can take a bath here if there is water and the toilets won't pass tourist standards

These students (the youngest i met is Primary Two) in Lubok Antu at SK Ulu Engkari and they stay in the hostel far away from their parents and home

The feedback I get from large corporations is that the Ministry of Education or Department of Education would have all the schools' needs in their list. Yes they have and its a long list and the priority is focused on basic infrastructures. That is where the gap is and at times the sponsors usually are not sure on how to go about in giving assistance. Hopefully more organisations may consider this form of rural outreach program in future and work closely with the Resident Office or the Divisional Education Department. Drop by and have a look for themselves if it needs be, talk with the Headmasters, students and teachers. Contributions can also be in the form of library books, computers, furnitures, mattresses (for residential school) or they can just go to the school of their choosing and identify what the school needs and how they can assist. Study tables or table lamps are the simple stuffs they may donate. I am sure the schools will oblige in providing the necessary cooperation.

Though i felt under dressed with everyone wearing coats and neckties at the Kuching Rotary Central event the t-shirt Mari Berjumpa is a new year gift from YAB Prime Minister so it was meaningful to wear it then as YAB's Department had given the SK Klassen a solid bridge to replace the fragile hanging bridge last time.

Once again i wish to express my gratitude to all those who have in one way provided their assistance. Though you may feel its a little thing but it brings significant meaning to the young students. Thank you for the lessons Sri Aman, I will miss the companionship and God Bless you all.

All New in 2012

Changes in 2012

2012 has come. In fact its a week into 2012. Nadai Nama Nama has been in deep thought on what lies ahead. The new year will certainly be new in many aspects.

A new beginning is in store for this blog too as I will be working in a new challenging frontier. Being transferred back to Kuching after a three and half years stint in Sri Aman means some form of adaptation to city life again. Not much wildlife snapshots, maybe just photos of wild men working hard in their cubicles. The job is also new as I will be joining the Human Resource Management Unit of the Chief Minister's Department this month. What more with all those new gadgets coming into the market and apps that goes with it makes work more exciting. Actually I will try to apply them into my work so as to improve my team's productivity. There is a lot of catching up to do as the State Government's Sarawaknet Portal has been upgraded to make it more interactive among the officers in the service wherever they may be. So I am a bit behind in using this new communication platform as some of my colleagues seem to be armed with the latest smartphones and tablets. What is encouraging is that it will allow for easier networking with those in the different departments. So I will have to keep up with my fellow comrades. Let's make this investment by the State Government, a combination of technology and humans, worthwhile to improve service delivery. It will be a waste if the standard of service we offer remains status quo even with the changes. Let's begin the transformation process.

Happy New Year 2012

Deja Vu

That familiar 'feeling' when the new year arrives and the previous one comes to a close is making its presence now somewhere in the corner of my heart. Its that time of the year again where we start picking up the phone or start clicking on the computer to send out greetings to relatives and friends that come to mind. Some of us who have more time or who are meticulous by nature will actually have a list of 'must contact/must send wishes' list. it is like buying Greeting Cards where one starts counting how many many to buy and also to ensure there is enough stamps to accompany those envelopes. Boy, we really kept the postmen busy those days. That is one familiar exercise that would go missing in this deja vu as we tend to get only bills and sales promotions brochures in our mailboxes now.

Similarly, it is the time also to always remember the so many annual gatherings that we hold at almost during any festivities. Its something that we as Malaysians will be famous for as there are so many 'New Year' Celebrations that come to mind. Apart from this Roman calendar New Year of 2011 to 2012, we have the Chinese New year also coming soon. Some of us Ibans consider Gawai Dayak sometimes in June also as our New Year. But the meaningful part which has deja vu sense is the gathering of friends and family during these special occasions.

The funny Mr. Beans also needs friends to make his New Year celebration meaningful

It is during these gatherings where family bonds and friendship ties are strengthened. The younger members of the families will meet their cousins and it will during this time that new members will be introduced in the joyful family/friends reunion environment. It is also during these times that we will update about fortunes and share experiences, be it bitter or sweet.

In summary I would have to say the year 2011 has been one of the most challenging year. Not only for me but also for the family. I can dabble on and on about the early moments of 2011 when I was in the thick and thin of preparing for the State's 10th State Elections and the Pesta Benak 2011 in Sri Aman but for this post I would just like to give thanks to the Lord Almighty for having us go through one of the most difficult phase when my dad underwent a major operation in August 2011. Though he went through the operation with flying colours, it is the many months of recovery that was most trying. This year end gathering was made more significant as we celebrated dad's 72nd birthday. The sense of deja vu was strengthened as everyone was around during the family roll call giving toasts and sharing their thoughts through short speeches.

Dad blowing the '72' candles on his birthday cake.

Happy Birthday Dad....we love you. So to all the netizens of the world who come across my blog, wherever you may be, at home with your own gathering, at a concert somewhere or in restaurants.....or just alone in your room......Happy New year everyone. I don't have any greeting cards to offer, but I send to you my New Year greetings through my humble blog. May we leave the fond memories of 2011 and learn from its hard and not so sweet lessons if any. Let it enrich us with the experience to face the new year 2012. Keep the faith, let the love flow and go through this life doing the Lord's noble work of making this world of ours a better place. Peace and Prosperity to all.

#TWTUPKCH

Twitter Members Meet Up in Kuching
According to The Borneo Post the event is full of fun filled activities where members can get to play various types of games while meeting up with their twitter buddies.

I could sense something was not right when I got phone calls at almots midnight when acquaintance and friends called me up at almost midnight and start asking about hotel accomodations. Some were asking for recommendations and some asking for help in getting some special rates from hotels. Colleagues from other departments complained about the lack of hotels in Sri Aman and requested for accommodation at the Government Rest House. I did not really ask them why the have this sudden interest to spend the night in Sri Aman. Being in Kuching on official duty I did not really put much though to that. It was when I drove up to Sri Aman in the morning that I saw the long line of vehicle,s of various shapes and sizes along the Serian-Sri Aman road (near the junction to Simunjan). Here are some pictures of what caused the long traffic jam and probably the reason why some chose to spend the night in Sri Aman as the accidents happened that evening.

Traffic stalled at the Simunjan junction due to the accident which was about 200 metres uphill towards Sri Aman

The culprit? You may think this was the only culprit if you approach from the Simunjan side direction. This incident happened ealier in the morning after another accident occurred over the other side of the hill

This is the jam from the Sri Aman side and it was informed that the distance of the line went as far as Sabal which was more than 10 kilometres away

Another view of the accident where the two lane road was almost blocked by the tanker which caused the traffic jam

In trying to see what happened over the hill I managed to see this express bus at the back of a large Tow Truck

The first accident at night was between another tanker (downhill towards Sri aman) involving this tanker and the express bus

Another view of the overturned tanker and also the sand on the road to prevent the road from being too slippery due to oil spill

The tanker from another angle

The tanker's company which caused the traffic jam sent an empty tanker to siphon the oil from the stalled tanker. This will make the stalled tanker more lighter for towing.

The view of the other tanker can be seen next to the stalled tanker as they begin the operation of clearing the road.

Short video clip for viewing

This accident happened because of a few factors I believed. One can't put this on human factor but the roadworthiness of one of the vehicles was said to be in question. failed brakes, slippery roads, speed...you name it. With the right combination of wrong factors, accidents will occur. Lives will be lost. Monetary and emotional impact, how do one put value to that? How about putting that money to put into developing our roads in Sarawak? Wider roads could reduce the risk of our mainroad here being cut off just by a small accident. So drive safe people, holiday season which is marked with the rainy season is here. Take care, NNN 'sighing out'. *sigh*

High Over Sri Aman

Tour of Duty Over Sri Aman Division

Right after the meeting to form the Secretariat for Lubok Antu Rural Development, I was fortunate enough to be invited to join the helicopter ride with the Member of Parliament for P.203 Lubok Antu, the Honourable Tuan William Nyalau Badak. My Nikon D5000 again came with me by accident as I had intended to take some photos of the durian season at Lubok Antu. Thus I share with Nadai Nama Nama readers some of the aerial shots that I manage to shoot at random and maybe those of you from Sri Aman can identify some familiar buildings or longhouses.

Though it was a Maal Hijrah holiday and also a Sunday, Sri Aman was in for a treat as the Naza team were organising a visit to Sri Aman as part of their Ducati Multistrada Borneo Experience & Adventure 2011 event. The Dulcati Multistrada team was led by Yang Berbahagia Datuk SM Zulkifli SM Amin's team of Naza Chevrolet vehicles. It was an exciting experience as I managed to catch a glimpse on how this superbike perfromed as I cruised along the Serian - Sri Aman. Escorted by the Police and Marshall I managed to follow the team as they rode at an average speed of 130 km/h. They overtook me somewhere at Balai Ringin area and as I tried to keep up with the convoy I was praying for dear life at the same time.

Naza ~ Ducati is planning to organise another Ducati Borneo Adventure Tour soon and I believe Sri Aman would be put in their list as we invite them to experience our Benak waves. It has been fun keeping up with their tweets updated by the @Eftraideas team. Keep up the good job guys and gals and see you all again soon.

Flames Destroy Longhouse

Rumah Jegai, Kampung Purai, Undop Sri Aman Burnt Down

Saturday's quiet setting was shaken when news of a longhouse in Sri aman had burnt down. Fortunately no lives were lost. The 17 doors Rumah Jegai, Undop Sri Aman which is located along the Batu Lintang Road, Undop Sri Aman was totally destroyed by the fire. At this point in time the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) are still investigating the cause.

Nadai Nama Nama (NNN) has to admit that if not for the availability of communications technology, news of the fire would have been only known the next day, taking into consideration its rural setting. However Short Messaging Services, Blackberry Messenger, Whatssap and Facebook was put to immediate use in coordinating assistance to the fire victims. Put this in the hands of smartphone savvy members of the public information can be disseminated at incredible speed. Below are some screen shots of the several messages I received, one of many within three to four hours of the incident. News was already conveyed to the necessary individuals, government agencies and non governmental organisations. Efforts to assist and provide relief to the fire victims were already underway before midnight and donations also poured in the next day.

MMS received from Mr. Law Eng Hui @Ah Hang who was passing by at the area (also MMSed by my staff Mr. William Irwan Manggoi). The fire was spotted as early as 3:40 pm and the fury of the flames destroyed the longhouse by 4:10 pm

Mervyn Tajem messaged me from his Blackberry Mesengger (BBM) on the incident

Later in the evening as some newspapers started calling and wanted a few more pictures, I managed to get it from Ah Hang again. The Sri Aman RTM (Rasa FM) made a public announcements to the people in the surrounding areas to provide assistance to the fire victims.

Coordination between the heads of Departments including with instructions Tuan Resident Johnathan Lugoh who was at the site before 5:30 pm. There was good cooperation with the various heads of departments including the Sri Aman Divisional Engineer Cassidy Morris who immediately sent water tanks and tents to the area. He himself was there to deliver them that night.

The Day After

The next day, the destruction caused by the fire could be clearly seen. The 17 doors longhouse was completely burnt to the ground. All that was left were the concrete portions of the longhouse walls. It was as if a bomb had dropped on the house. The Bomba personnels were on site to investigate the cause of the fire. The two water tanks and four tents sent by JKR Sri Aman helped provide minimal comfort to the fire victims. Without a roof over their heads some had to stay with their relatives and friends at nearby houses.

Sri Aman Red Crescent amongst others were at hand to provide ands on assistance and donations to the fire victims. Those who dropped by to give aid and assistance apart form the Sri Aman Welfare Department were the various communities from the surrounding areas.

The Member of Parliament of P.202 Sri Aman Tuan Masir Kujat (third from right) and the Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN ~ third from left) for N.27 Simanggang YB Datuk Francis Harden ak Hollis together with the community leaders visited the fire victim the next day. In the photo above the Member of Parliament gave donations and contributions for the victims to the Tuai Rumah Jegai. Photo credit: Sri Aman Divisional Engineer Cassidy Morris (in hitam kuning ~ black yellow) was also present.

It is heartening to note that the people streaming to give whatever assistance they can are from the various communities from the surrounding area. What was more encouraging was that they were multi-racial and multi-religous in composition. Many things ran in my mind at the same time as this was not the first longhouse fire that had occurred in Sri Aman. There must be a way to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. There has been too many longhouse fires for my liking and maybe its time to look at the way the relevant authorities can provide the necessary awareness and training to the rural communities (where the fire fignting mechanisms are at minimal or non existent) to prevent future destruction by fire. I would not want to cross any department's borders in seeking answers but hey, we need to approach this in a workable way. However, I am thankful that most of the people here are putting to good use the telecommunication technology available to them. These are necessary if any emergencies should occur and that connectivity is a critical factor in providing information either to save lives or coordinate relief operations. If put to good use, the benefits are many. Special thanks to everyone involved in this incident. There are too many to mention and it can't be denied that social media also chipped in to provide news of this incident. Many more needs to be done after this so lets join hands to assist where we can. NNN signing out for now.

Sri Aman Road Sinks

17 Nov: Sri Aman - Temudok Road Landslide

I could sense something was not right when I saw several missed calls on my handset. But those calls came in as I was halfway presenting on the progress of our Batang Lupar Agropolitan Project at the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development's meeting room, somewhere on 29 floors in Putrajaya. There were too many unknown numbers to return calls so I assumed it must be something related to the upcoming seminar that was to be held the next day. It was not until an email of the photos from one of my staff as I landed in Kuching that I knew there was a serious landslide in Sri Aman. Communications with the technical department handling the landslide was ongoing throughout the evening. And as I was about to decide whether to return immediately the message from Sri Aman Divisional Engineer (DE), Ir. Cassidy Morris informed me in the late evening that the road entrance to Sri Aman was closed for repairs.

Below are the photos that i receive from my staff (Mohd Ellfizan Paukan) on the road cracks that appeared at 11:00 am at the Sri Aman - Temudok road.

Road cracks on the road which was the first sign of a serious structure failure below

Landslide occurrence saw the road railings at the edge of the hill tumbling down

Attempts to pour premix had no effect as the cracks grew wider

18 Nov: Air and Ground View

Early the next morning when I got the green light from DE, I immediately scooted off to Aman. It was an anxious moment as I knew that the affected road was the only entrance to Sri Aman town. There is one alternative road which is known as the Pipe Road passing through Bayai but I would only say its a road if one has a good 4WD vehicle.

However, going in Temudok-Sri Aman entrance was not easy as there was a major traffic jam at the junction. The emergency repairs response team comprising of the Sri Aman Public Works Department (JKR), CMS Road Maintenance Team and contractors were already on site. Though traffic was moving at a slow pace, it was orderly. There is an expected surge of traffic this Friday as it was the final day of school and many road users will be going in and out of Sri Aman.

The Assistant Minister for Rural Development and Housing, YB Datuk Francis Harden Hollis was kind enough to bring us up in the air to view the affected area. My trusted Nikon D5000 was by my side and here are some of the images for those interested to know which part of the road collapsed. Some were worried as they were not sure if it was the main road from Kuching to Sibu that was cut off.

Intensive development on top of the Temudok Hill is suspected to have contributed to the landslide

Road cracks as seen from the air

19 Nov 2011: Latest Update

As of 12 noon on 19 Nov 2011 the Sri Aman Divisional Engineer is seen here inspecting the completed road diversion which has allowed the traffic flow to normalcy for road users going in and out of Sri Aman.

It is quite a relief to know that the situation now is back to normal as a temporary road diversion has been completed 36 hours after the occurrence of the landslide. It was the quick response by all the government departments and private sectors involved that prevented the situation from deteriorating. I believe the lightning repair works done by the Sri Aman Public Works (JKR) deserve mention as many had thought that Sri Aman was cut off from other parts of Sarawak. For many this is the only known road in and out of Sri Aman as not many has tried to venture to the alternative Pipe Road. Nadai Nama Nama would like to express thanks to everyone involved also as it is seen as a test for the upcoming rainy season that is expected to bring more unexpected emergencies. Cheers.

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

Nadai Nama Nama pays tribute to a special person who has left the world a much more exciting place. Steve Jobs will be missed by many. He has touched our lives in one way or another. Being a gadget freak like me he has inspired me (and many others) in many ways. His courage to be different, to try new ideas and throwing them into our very hands to actually make us believe all things are possible if you try hard enough. I came to know the name Steve Jobs during my undergraduate days. His name shall live on in my heart as a symbol of determination and inspiration. Rest In Peace Steve Jobs, you have done and gave more than anyone could possibly have. Yes, its time to rest now, God Bless.

Fear Factor Ala Kuching

It Does Not Matter What Your Colour Is

That's right. One would have thought that seeing people in yellow, red and other colours trampling over each other in Sarawak would not happen here. But yet it did recently. Even the children were seen wearing the t-shirts with colours forbidden by the authorities. One would have not believed that this wonderful and peaceful state would be spared colourful tee shirt protests. However the boys in blue were well in control of the situation amidst the shouts and screams minus the tear gases and batons. It was a surprise to see one of my Sarawak Bloggers friend, Mr. Mike Cheng, involved in this fearful moments.

The boys in blue were in full control of the situation although those wearing yellow t-shirts and we see Mike Cheng (in light blue) seeking refuge from the authorities as he is being hounded by that little girl in yellow who is still contemplating on what to do with him.

Not so violent clashes of Yellow, Green and Blue t-shirts

A yellow T-shirt lady is seen here running away from the red T-Shirt ladies as she feels she is being outnumbered maybe?

Mike Cheng knows he is out sized and out runned during the riotous moments but the temptation of what is kept in the secret aquarium tempts a gold rush scramble. No one dares to overtake the tough dude in blue.

At this point in time I would like to ask what was Mike thinking?

But all was in the name of fun as this event was a Fear Factor Event held by the organisers for the parents last Sunday (17 Jul 2011) at the MBKS Mini Stadium. This was a side event to keep the parents occupied while activities were being organised for the children from various nurseries (mostly Krista Kindy) including day care centres.

The children of course enjoyed themselves as they had their games and colouring contests while seeing their parents having tumbling over one another.

No one was injured, or rather, no humans were injured in the events. Hopefully no frogs were injured also in the froggy catching competition. This was a fear factor event and its was expected that the participants would be scared of frogs. So they thought as the participants were there irregardless of race or age or TEE SHIRT COLOUR to share the fun. Anyway the prizes were too attractive to be scared of frogs. Maybe some non governmental organisation (NGOs) which emphasize on frog protection would not be happy if the frogs are harmed. And I believe only political parties are scared of frogs and may wish to squish them if given the chance. See how things get out of perspective when we get too sensitive and go into the political nature of things? NGOs and Politics need to steer clear of one another. Way to go Mike...at least you made it to Round 2.0 of the Fear Factor.

Crikey! Aussie Surfs Benak

First there was Benak, Then There was Ian Hockiy

As the organiser of Pesta Benak 2011 gets into gear into organising the Tidal Bore Festival (or popularly known as Pesta Benak) someone walked up to our office and requested that he would like to try to surf the benak. It was one of the many surprises. There had been instances that I had been asked the questions especially with the planned arrival of four surfers from France who are set to surf the benak. 'Don't you have anyone from Australia?' was the question asked of me. Its a land where the toughest surfers come from. Don't anyone has the courage of the late Steve Irwin, who fears no crocodile, snakes and other creatures that rules Batang Lupar. Thus the news that Mr. Ian Hockiy from New South Wales Australia really delighted me. Though I was far away in Kuala Lumpur on the day that he was planning to surf the benak at Batang Lupar River, Sri Aman, I gave instructions to my able staff, Encik Mohd. Ellfizan to record Mr. Ian's attempt. He knows what I expect from the videos and photos and thus the video (after editting and putting in the appropriate music) is posted below as part of our Pesta Benak 2011 Promotion. The additional surprise was that he is a veteran surfer, being 57 years old, having started this sports since he was 11. Now that this is something exciting to know as being a government servant I have this idea that I will be retiring at 56 and wondering what best I can do to fill my time.

To Mr. Ian, I'll say well done mate! Thanks to Mr. Ellfizan for capturing the necessary video show to allow us to share this wonderful surf video of the Sri Aman Benak, Batang Lupar's very own tidal bore which has attracted an Aussie surfer to join the rank of surf elites of Batang Lupar.

The late Steve Irwin used to say "I have a message for my fans. Whatever you want to do in this world, it is achievable. The most important thing that I've found, that perhaps you could use, is be passionate and enthusiastic in the direction that you choose in life, and you'll be a winner." ---Crikey! What an Adventure on Animal Planet, 2007"

Now back to the question of what I plan to do after I retire at 56.......yes....I will continue to watch the benak if the opportunity arises. the only surfing I plan to do will be at Sunway Lagoon Water Theme Park. On benak Surfing. I will encourage those who wish to surf it to do so. Cheers.

RIP: Jerome Runggol

A Comrade Leaves Us

It was totally unexpected that I received news of the late Mr. Jerome Runggol who was called upon by the Lord yesterday 17 June 2011. He was both a family friend and also someone I had known to be the coolest private secretary (to YB Datuk Francis Harden ak Hollis, the Assistant Minister for Land Development, Sarawak) I ever worked with since I was transferred to Sri Aman three years ago. He had always encouraged me to take up golf, something that I had not pick up yet. A few things that I had also never got to do for him was to assist him with his Facebook profile. He wanted a photo which would best describe him as his profile photo. That was something that I also never got to do as I had thought someone like Mr. Jerome, an ever smiling man, sometimes always deep in thought, but never failing to give advice whenever I need it, would still have many more years ahead of him. I believe I would have learnt much from him, being a former government servant, working with the Medical Department before he decided to participate in politics. Though he was YB Datuk Francis Harden's private secretary, he was always ever helpful and he never threw his weight around which made my job in the administration of development in Sri Aman less complicated. The photos of the good times together below, hopefully will serve to describe Mr. Jerome for the dedicated man he was to his YB and party and also to his friends and family.

The late Mr. Jerome Runggol (photo 2010) ~ I am sure this picture would have made a good Facebook profile photo

How his friends see him as described by his Facebook friends in Alice Jawan's condolence message in my Facebook page

With YB Datuk Francis Harden in blue (left) and wearing those cool dark shades is Mr. Jerome (right) with the late Mr. Walter Lamat Kiyai (middle)

Memorable moments with Mr. Antony Colas as Mr. Jerome I distinctly remembered explained to our guest from France about Sarawak's culture especially the 'Ooohaaaa' and 'bottoms up' part. I am sure Mr. Antony will miss him when he comes to Sarawak next month

Mr. Jerome was also a talented singer and even I cannot outperform him as he has that distinct style in performing as seen in the photo above

Mr. Jerome's radiance shine on everyone he meets and its hard not to smile or laugh at his jokes

Adieu Comrade, we will miss you. Condolences to the family. May his soul rest in peace. God bless.

Waves of Benak

Welcome to Sri Aman's Pesta Benak 2011

Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Allen. Gawai 2011 presented its own lovely (and loving) moments as I managed to scurry down to Sri Aman from Song, Kapit via Sibu to attend a friend's wedding. Its a wedding with a difference as the bride's father, Mr. Joseph Junting was a long time family friend.

The wedding couple's much awaited kiss as both parents watched proudly

One for the album: Mr. & Mrs. Allen with Mr. & Mrs. Desmond (yes that bald fellow)

A colourful and flowery wedding deco provides for a lovely dance setting to remember

No doubt during this Gawai moments I managed to meet up with old friends and we wished each other a Happy Gawai amidst the fun. As I drink away with Allen's dad at the back, the guys in front (from left to right) Mr. Augustine, Mr. Hillary and Mr. Aldrin tried their uttermost to behave and talked about how environment friendly looking those green cans look.

A Wedding and a Gawai......its like two in one favourite drink.....so did I enjoy myself? I may have overdone it but like I say, it was time to enjoy the double celebration but my fun moments are not the highlight here

So as not to steal the thunder with what I did this Gawai at the Sri Aman Dewan Suarah, I present to you the loving couple in their best dance pose on stage.....Mr. Allen and Dr. Majorie. Of course they are the 'Raja Sehari'....the Royal Couple for the event.....

And like what we ask of any Royal Couples on their weddings....we request that they kiss twice, which they did to the delight of the crowd

To Mr. Allen and Dr. Majorie, Congratulations!! Thank you for the fun.....and free flow of drinks which saw me struggle to keep in step with the much more veteran dancers. I wish you all the best and may live happily ever after.
