Working from 8 to 4 each day (rather than the more conventional 9 to 5) means I tend to miss the very crowded peak hour ‘sardine’ trains. Which is awesome. There’s nothing worse than a serious invasion of personal space in what can only be described as an over packed sweat box.

The 20 minutes I spend on the train each morning and afternoon is the perfect amount of time to check my emails and quickly catch up with the latest happenings on Twitter. Most days, I even mange to fit in a quick game or two (I’m currently addicted to DoodleJump & Scoops)!

If I was to drive to and from work, it would take the same amount of time and I’d have to pay for parking. Really not worth it considering I actually enjoy the ‘me’ time I get on public transport.

Yesterday I underwent a free health check at work. The fitness lady checked out a few different things for me including my blood pressure, blood glucose levels, cholesterol & weight.

My results were good. Nothing stood out as unusual and on a whole I’m pretty fit.

That said one of my results shows that I’m at a slightly increased risk of heart disease (which is kind of bad considering I have a congenital heart defect). This means I need to become just that little bit healthier to reduce the risk.

I’m the first to admit I’m absolutely hopeless when it comes to sticking to exercise regimes. I tend to come up with these elaborate plans that are good in theory, but when it comes to execution I’m nowhere near motivated enough to stick with them. It doesn’t help that the hours I work can sometimes be extremely long and are somewhat unpredictable. I think though, after the chat I had with the fitness lady, by making a few small changes I can achieve what I need to without changing my lifestyle too drastically.

So I’ve decided to take a slightly different approach to what I usually do when I decide I need to “get fit.” No elaborate fitness plans. I think it’s been proven that they don’t actually work for me. Instead, I give you:

Nadine’s very awesome (but at the same time super simple) making healthier life choices checklist:

Switch my mid-afternoon chocolate-y snack for a snack that is better for me.

Cut down on how much iced tea I drink.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.

Start eating a decent breakfast.

Use the gym at least three times a week for half an hour or so. This one’s a no brainer, especially considering there are free staff gym facilities in my building (the work gym is actually on my floor and less than 20 metres from my desk).

Continue playing netball each week.

I’m going to make these few smallish, and perhaps more importantly realistic, lifestyle changes and see what happens! :)

I’ve been so busy lately that I think I’ve actually been thinking in disjointed snippets… :D

Today marks a week without my iPhone. I accidently sent it off a bench last Sunday and the screen shattered. Consequentially I have spent the last week swearing at one of Adam’s old phones whilst waiting for my phone company to complete their insurance assesement. It’s sucky because it takes me forever to text on a non-QWERTY keyboard and I’m really beginning to miss my morning & evening internet catch ups. My train trips each day are my ‘downtime’ and when I usually check what’s new on Google Reader and/or Twitter…

I actually went for a run yesterday! I agreed to play netball for a work competition so must at least attempt to pull myself into some state of fitness. My calves hate me today.

The Hurt Locker is a brilliant movie. If you haven’t seen it… you should.

I bought the kitties a new scratching pole! It’s HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGE! And kind of awesome. The platforms are shaped like fish. I bought it from an online discount store which of course meant I had to buy other ‘things’ and take advantage of multiple item discounted postage. I’m now the proud owner of a fondue kit. :)

We went on an open vehicle adventure and got to see all sorts of interesting animals up close! I think my favourite animals of the day were the giraffes! The zebras were kind of cool too…

I wasn’t planning to make any real New Year’s Resolutions this year. However, the boyfriend did and it got me thinking seriously about a few of the things I want to achieve over the next couple of years.

As a consequence of said thinking, yesterday I finally completed a list of 101 (rather random) tasks I want to achieve over 1001 days. I’ve been working on this list on and off for about six months, ever since I was inspired to finally doing a 101/1001 list of my own by Elizabeth.

Some of them are just for fun such as buying a ridiculous pair of shoes just because. Some of them are quite serious such as finally getting around to visiting a dentist, which is something I haven’t done in almost 3 years.

If you’re interested in some of the things I have planned for myself over the next 2.75 years please feel free to check out my list!
