By Seun Adeuyi

The death of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe in captivity has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing grief, concern over the country’s security situation, and reflections on leadership and public service.

Rabe, who was abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State about two weeks ago while travelling for a wedding, reportedly died while in captivity.

The Katsina State Government, through the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, announced on Saturday that the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.

Following the announcement, social media users took to Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) to mourn the former general and comment on the broader challenge of insecurity in the country.

On Facebook, Usman Almustapha described the incident as a lesson for serving military personnel, urging them to protect ordinary citizens during their years of service.

“The death of Major General Abubakar Rabe (Rtd) should serve as a lesson to serving military personnel. Use your position to protect and safeguard ordinary citizens while you are in service,” he wrote.

Another commenter, Musa Hassan, said the incident underscored the temporary nature of power and public office.

“People in power should know that power is transient and their failures and inaction today can affect them in future,” he stated.

Similarly, Suleiman Zaria offered prayers for the deceased while stressing the importance of responsible leadership.

“Leadership is a trust, and history never forgets. Doing the right thing at the right time will always leave a legacy of honour and service,” he wrote.

Mohammed Abdullahi Nako wrote: “If an army general can be kidnapped and killed, then who is safe? We are in grave danger under this lackadaisical government. The nation is no longer safe. Incessant kidnappings, banditry, and other violent crimes against citizens have become the order of the day.

“The government appears preoccupied solely with strategies to win the next election, while the safety of lives and property is no longer its priority. This misplaced focus underscores a glaring level of incompetence. When those entrusted with the security of the state cannot protect even high ranking military officers, it exposes a total collapse of the security architecture and a dereliction of the government’s primary constitutional duty to its people.”

Other users reflected on the country’s security challenges. Orok Bassey suggested that experiences such as Rabe’s could influence future discussions on approaches to addressing insurgency and banditry, while Joel Yuyu called for accountability and justice in confronting wrongdoing.

On X, many users expressed concern over the state of insecurity and questioned the safety of citizens.

A user identified as @abba_laminu lamented what he described as the growing threat posed by bandits, noting that the death of a retired senior military officer highlighted the dangers facing Nigerians.

“After years of service and sacrifice, Allah ya jiqanshi da rahama,” he wrote.

Another user, @Isiyaq, called on political leaders to take stronger measures against insecurity, while @ReliableGov described the incident as tragic.

Several other users used the occasion to renew calls for more effective responses to kidnapping and banditry across the country.

Rabe’s death has added to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnapping for ransom and bandit attacks continue to pose significant challenges despite ongoing security operations.

The retired military officer’s passing has drawn condolences from citizens across the country, many of whom described the incident as a painful reminder of the need for sustained efforts to improve security and protect lives.
https://dailytrust.com/were-not-safe-if-a-general-can-die-this-way-reactions-trail-abubakars-death/

Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, says only God can ultimately bring an end to Nigeria’s insecurity challenges. Nigeria is witnessing a resurgence of insecurity, with killings and abductions across parts of the country, including recent incidents in Oyo and Borno, between May 15 and 17.

Daily Trust had reported how gunmen attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and abducted 39 students and seven teachers. In Borno, armed groups attacked schools in Mussa, Askira-Uba Local Government Area, abducting 42 pupils.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Matawalle said insecurity remains a national challenge that requires collective efforts from both security agencies and citizens to overcome. He urged Nigerians to support security agencies and pray for peace while warning politicians against exploiting the situation for political gain.

“It’s disheartening, and we must all rise to ensure that security agencies and Nigerians work together to end insecurity in the country. Insecurity does not discriminate based on political affiliation or religion. It can affect anyone.

“That is why we have urged the opposition to stop using insecurity to incite people. It is a challenge that can happen to anyone, and no Nigerian is happy about it. Unfortunately, some members of the opposition appear pleased with the situation. They do not care about the people. What matters to them is portraying the government as a failure for their own political interests and deceiving people into believing they alone can end insecurity.

“It is only God that can bring to an end to this insecurity, alongside our collective prayers and efforts. It should not be used as a tool to condemn others or score political points.” he said.

According to him, old and misleading videos were being circulated on social media by some people to suggest the failure of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Noting that insecurity is not an isolated case with Nigeria, Matawalle assured that security operatives are working round the clock to crush terrorists unleashing attacks in parts of the country.

“There are fake and recycled videos being circulated, some dating back to the Jonathan administration and others from countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali, yet they are being presented as incidents that occurred under this administration. That is not true.

“Our security operatives are working tirelessly across the country. We have directed them to decisively with terrorists, but this is not a challenge that can disappear overnight. Even some of the world’s powerful nations have battled insecurity for years and are still confronting it.

“We ask Nigerians to continue praying for us and supporting efforts to bring this challenge to an end.”e to serve.” he explained.
https://dailytrust.com/matawalle-only-god-can-end-nigerias-insecurity/?fbclid=Iwb21leASanLNjbGNrBJqcpGV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHsRj673ULX5P_IRtarPuLEQLbeY3y4IMUR9tVy09JGaeS67lo64CVHg2kmws_aem_YWdncwCBegL8lQO1j0AY4p1ODyKv&brid=YWdncwE7ayg3pNz40opFXqVgeUBc

The Kennedy Center has fully removed President Donald Trump’s name from its building, following a court’s orders to reverse the center’s name change before an extended deadline, Executive Director Matt Floca told a judge in court documents Saturday.

Crews placed a tarp over the signage on Friday, blocking any view of the progress made on the removal of Trump’s name. The tarp was still on the building’s facade on Saturday after Trump’s name was said to have been taken off.

A judge had granted the Kennedy Center’s request for additional time to fully remove Trump’s name from the building, giving the arts center until noon ET Saturday after the organization missed an 11:59 p.m. Friday deadline.

The 12-hour extension came after Justice Department attorneys representing the center said late Friday that while work was ongoing, thunderstorms in the Washington area caused delays.

Workers began removing Trump’s name from an exterior wall of the Kennedy Center early Saturday morning, video from a CNN crew showed.

On Saturday morning, a small crowd had gathered to watch the president’s name come down, some of them stopping to take a photo. One man took a selfie with the tarp-covered building behind him, crossing his fingers.

“I just wanted to see (Trump’s) name gone,” JoAnn Jones told CNN. “When a person wants to put their name on a building that you had nothing to do with, you did no work, you just, you don’t deserve it.”

Crews began assembling scaffolding underneath the exterior signage of the building Friday. Shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, workers started to drape a covering around the scaffolding, essentially blocking the view of their progress, as people in a crowd that had gathered to witness the removal chanted, “Shame!”

A little after 3 a.m., crews appeared to be removing the letters, video shot through a small opening in the scaffolding covering showed.

On Friday, an appeals court rejected a last-minute effort by the center to freeze the ruling by US District Judge Christopher Cooper that imposed the 11:59 p.m. deadline, arguing more time was needed for court proceedings play out.

The appeals court did not explain its reasoning for its decision in a brief, unsigned ruling. The panel included Judge Gregory Katsas, a Trump appointee; Patricia Millett, an appointee of former President Barack Obama; and Robert Wilkins, also an Obama appointee.

The judges asked for more written legal arguments to be submitted later this month over the center’s bid to pause the lower-court’s ruling that said it must remove Trump’s name from its building, website, promotional materials and other areas. But even as the legal wrangling plays out in coming weeks, the center must take steps to comply with the judge’s directive.
https://edition.cnn.com/2026/06/12/politics/trump-kennedy-center-name-change-deadline

Because most times they do down payment because they have the money and they produce most of these items. I’m not going to be a traditional wife.”

The statement immediately generated debate, with some social media users supporting her right to set personal standards, while others questioned whether such expectations were realistic.

Social Media Reactions
The woman further explained that maintaining her appearance was one of the reasons she would not engage in domestic work.

“I don’t cook and I don’t clean because my manicure is expensive. If you can’t afford a chef, a cleaner, a nanny… then you can’t marry me. I’m not going to be doing all that. My nails are expensive. I’m not using them to scrub or clean.”

She also made it clear that anyone unable to provide that lifestyle should not pursue a relationship with her.

“If you cannot afford this lifestyle, please don’t come for me. You can’t marry me.”

The video has continued to generate mixed reactions online, with many users debating changing relationship dynamics, personal preferences and expectations within modern marriages.

Lady lists rules for her future husband pic.twitter.com/AdsUUgaHgN
— Metro Naija (@metronaija) June 11, 2026

Rescue operations have been hampered by continuing aftershocks, unstable structures, and damaged roads leading to affected towns.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, triggering panic across the southern Philippines and causing extensive damage to homes, schools, hospitals, and public infrastructure. General Santos City and parts of Sarangani province were among the worst-affected areas, with authorities declaring states of calamity to speed up emergency response and relief efforts.

Thousands of residents have been displaced and are staying in evacuation centers as officials assess structural damage and distribute food, water, and medical assistance. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has recorded numerous aftershocks since the quake, prompting warnings for residents to avoid damaged buildings.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has pledged full government support for affected communities and ordered national agencies to accelerate recovery and rehabilitation measures. The Philippines is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active regions, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence in the archipelago.
https://www.aa.com.tr/en/asia-pacific/death-toll-climbs-to-55-after-powerful-earthquake-hits-southern-philippines/3964802

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zER9aMZjww?si=B5tmuEdAo61RNKGP
