Airlines Raise Fare Amidst Rising Fuel Price

Domestic airlines in Nigeria have increased their minimum base fares to about N200,000 for one-way tickets following the continued rise in aviation fuel prices and mounting operational costs.

Checks across the booking portals of several airlines showed that the fare increase affects most operators, although a few carriers are yet to adjust their ticket prices as of press time.

Daily Trust reports that United Nigeria Airlines has fixed its minimum fare at N200,000 regardless of destination, while Air Peace raised its one-way fares to about N211,600. Ibom Air also adjusted its base fare upward to approximately N200,300.

However, some airlines retained relatively lower fares on selected routes. Arik Air maintained fares between N113,000 and N114,000 for Abuja-Lagos flights, while Aero Contractors’ fares ranged from N123,127 to N146,702. ValueJet’s fares stood between N118,571 and N132,857 for Lagos-Abuja trips.

The increase came as aviation fuel, also known as Jet A1, now sells for about N2,650 per litre at some airports across the country, putting additional pressure on airline operators.

This is despite the slash in ex-depot price by the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals earlier in the week.

Some of the operators who spoke with our correspondent justified the decision to raise fares, blaming it on rising operational expenses, shrinking cash flow and growing debts within the aviation sector.

An airline official, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorised to comment publicly, said the adjustment followed extensive consultations and careful assessment of the economic situation.

According to the source, the fare increase was an individual business decision by each airline and not a coordinated action among operators.

“We have adjusted our minimum fares to N200,000 per flight irrespective of the route. This decision was taken after serious consideration of many factors,” the source said.

The official explained that airlines could no longer sustain operations under the current cost of aviation fuel, warning that failure to review fares could worsen the crisis in the industry.

“We cannot continue to subsidise travellers with the current situation of Jet A1. Cash flow has dried up and debts are increasing,” the source added.

Operators also appealed to passengers for understanding, describing the increase as painful but necessary for the survival of domestic airlines.

Meanwhile, aviation analyst, Group Capt. John Ojikutu has stressed the need to fix the pipelines conveying Jet A1 to the Murtala Muhammad Airport in Ikeja Lagos in order to reduce the logistics cost of bringing the product.

“Without bridging the supply with pipelines from Ejigbo to the airport, you may not get it lower than that. Give the concession out to the airlines (AON) or any other private operator who should not get more than N50/litre for the bridging or N100m for 2m litre instead of the N350/ltr or N700m for 2m daily by transportation,” he said.

Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, says the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has lost its bearing and vision.

Kayode stated this Thursday during an interview on State Affairs, a podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo.

Speaking on the ongoing primary election of the party across the country, Fayemi said consensus is an implosion in the APC.

“There’s no intellectualism in the APC because there’s no debate in the party. This was the address that I gave at the Southwest party conference in Lagos.

“I was very explicit that this is not where the party has come from, that we have lost our bearings and the vision of the founding fathers of the party.

“It’s unfortunate that people are running to Aso Rock asking or begging for consensus. The inability to reach a consensus is implosion,” he said.

Good evening, everyone. Hope y'all had a great day.
I have a question please. I just want to know if am the one not seeing this as I should or something.
So the thing is that my pregnant wife, currently in her 2nd trimester is making it look like I don't assist her enough even though I do help very often, even before she got pregnant. I don't see any big deal in it at all, I cook sometimes, do the whole house cleaning every now and then, and even help her wash her clothes sometimes. But I would say these days I haven't been helping out alot due to work schedule, not that I don't help at all, I still help whenever I can.

But in her own words, it's as if she wants me to do 80% of everything because of her condition. I didn't overreact or anything when she said it, but I was like what sort of talk is that.

I just want to know if she's right and I'm the one not seeing things as I should.

I need honest opinions because this one is not small matter.

I have about 15 million naira, and I’m stuck between two strong options:

1. Use it to support my brother’s relocation to Canada

2. Use it to start a business for him here in Nigeria

People around me are divided, so I want to hear unbiased thoughts.

On one hand, Canada looks like “better future guaranteed” — education, stability, better income potential, and long-term residency possibilities. Some people are saying if I miss this chance, I may regret it forever.

On the other hand, others are saying “why send talent abroad when you can build something here?”
15M can actually start a solid business in Nigeria if managed well — maybe importation, logistics, tech services, or food supply chain. But then again, Nigeria business environment is not exactly friendly… risk is high, consistency is harder.

The concerning part is this:

Some people say sending him abroad is basically “exporting success”, while others say investing locally is “building generational wealth at home”.

So I want to ask plainly:

Every few months, social media erupts with another shocking story of a man discovering that the child he raised is not biologically his. In response, some people now argue that DNA testing at birth should become a standard hospital procedure.

Supporters believe compulsory DNA testing would:

• prevent paternity fraud,

• reduce future family disputes, and
• provide medical and genetic certainty from birth.

Opponents, however, argue that it could:

• undermine trust in marriages and relationships,

• create a culture of suspicion, and
• unfairly stigmatise women and children.

Court Nullifies INEC Membership Timeline

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has invalidated guidelines by the Independent National Electoral Commission mandating political parties to submit a register and database of all members on May 10 to be eligible to contest for the 2027 general elections.

Justice M.G. Umar delivered the judgement on Thursday in a suit filed by the Youth Party, compelling INEC to follow the 120 days pre-election deadline prescribed by the Electoral Act 2026 for the submission of party registers.

“A Declaration is made that having regards to Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026 which requires political parties to submit the personal particulars of their candidates not later than 120 days to an election, the Defendant cannot lawfully abridge or limit that statutory period by prescribing a shorter time frame in its 2027 elections,” stated the judgement.

All registered parties, according to Mr Umar, have until September to submit an updated list of all party members, nullifying the initial May 10 deadline.

The judgement gives politicians, who have lost primary elections in their respective parties, the leeway to defect to another political party to continue their ambitions.

The presidential and national assembly elections have been scheduled for January 16, 2027 while governorship and state Houses of assembly polls are set to hold on February 6, 2027.

Mass Defection Looms In Rivers APC

There are indications that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State may lose prominent members before the 2027 general election.

The development, LEADERSHIP learnt, may not be unconnected with the recent disqualification of aspirants vying for various positions at the state and national levels.

Prominent among those disqualified by the screening committees of the party are serving members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the National Assembly.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the indications that the APC may soon lose prominent members became clearer when one of the disqualified aspirants and the senator representing Rivers West in the National Assembly, Senator Ipalibo Banigo, addressed her supporters at Obuama Town in Degema local government area of the state.

The visibly angry female senator, who served as deputy governor to the current minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, said, “By this, I am also pleading with our great national party, the All Progressives Congress to look into this matter and to do the right thing. I am sure they are capable of putting the records right.

“I don’t want you people to be agitated at all. But, when the time comes, we will still do the needful and God will do what he has to do,” she said.

Also, a disqualified aspirant for the Rivers State House of Assembly, Dr Legborsi Yamaabana, said he and others are consulting with the grassroots and would surely be on the ballot, but not on the platform of APC.

“Whatever they are contemplating for doing this, whatever they have done has a huge disservice to that political party. People like myself, people like Hon. Chijioke Ihunwo, people like Hon. Sokari Goodboy, we know we are the energy of this state.

“We are in a political party, trying to come in to make you win election because I being on the ballot has a ripple effect of making Mr. President win, making whoever is the governorship candidate of the party win and you are telling us we are not qualified to be in the party.

“If you disqualified me, give me a clear cut reasons for disqualifying me. My thinking had been that we will all be cleared to go and contest the primaries because I know nobody can beat me at the primaries.

“As I am talking to you, I am in consultation with the grassroots, with the youths. Very soon, you will hear the tsunami. We will be on the ballot and we will win this election because we cannot continue to shy away from this thing and leave it for another eight years or four years circle while our people continue to suffer in abject poverty,” he said.

Meanwhile, publicity secretary of APC in the state, has appealed to those who won and lost in the primaries in the state to close ranks and work towards the success of the party in the 2027 general elections.

Ikenga said: “Winning the primary does not guarantee victory in the general election. Candidates must carry everyone along to ensure overall success.”

He encouraged those who lost to remain committed to the party, assuring them that mechanisms are in place to address grievances and strengthen unity ahead of the general elections.
